“What’s the first rule about being the kid boss?” Yvette Nelson asked during a morning staff meeting. “Easy! No kidding around!” Yvette Nelson knows how to make people laugh. She also knows how to make difficult decisions, give important assignments and set goals. Plus, she has an incredible talent to make friends as well as a lasting impression. She proved all of this on Oct. 13 when Yve took over as the Museum’s Executive Director for a Day. Only the second youth to be named to this elite title, Yve appeared immediately at ease in such a significant role. “I’m a kid who loves to play and learn a lot.” And she took her role very seriously. In fact, she explained how she worked on two drafts of her application before submitting the final version for consideration. Yve is a focused second grader who knows how to draw a star two different ways and is teaching herself to write with her non-dominant hand, not to mention her tremendous hula-hooping skills. Yve balances her determination with kindness. “If you want a sticker or need a piece of candy today,” she offered, “feel free to stop by my office.” Any jitters that come with the arrival of a new boss were quickly alleviated. Her generosity didn’t stop there. During one of three hula hoop demonstrations, she encouraged peers saying, “If you don’t know how to hula hoop, just practice. Keep trying and do your best.” She added, “Be creative. If hula hooping isn’t your thing, find something else that makes you smile.” A lesson all of us could take to heart. Throughout the day, Yve jotted important notes on her personalized stationery from Cornerstone Print & Marketing. And as they discussed ideas to enhance the Museum, Yve and her closest group of advisor friends enjoyed lunch at Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers. They also made time to “observe” the Museum up close as they enjoyed an afternoon of play. When her day came to a close, Yve loaded up her goodies in her Museum logoed Thirty-One Gifts tote bag and walked out to her reserved parking spot. It was, as Yve said, “…a great chance to see what it’s like to be an adult.” In return, Yve reminded us how important it is to celebrate childhood. Although only one day a year is designated as the official “Executive Director for a Day” celebration, Yve—and all children—will always be the boss at Lincoln Children’s Museum.

A Note from Miss Flowers…
Through guided, hands-on toddler and parent activities, we'll learn and explore through play! During each 4-week session of Super Sprouts, we'll dig in and explore a different theme. Sessions include large group time, play-based learning stations, art activities and educational toy time. Stemming from our previous Toddler Team Up program, Super Sprouts features shorter sessions with expanded theme-based activities. Plus, we've added a stronger focus on parent and child interaction. Registration includes one toddler (ages 12-36 months) and their parent, grandparent or caregiver. Session Dates & Themes Jan. 14-Feb.5: Sensory Play Feb. 18-March 19: Blocks & Building April 1-23: All About Art
Pricing Members: $32 Non Members: $40
For specific days and times Super Sprouts is offered, and to register, visit LincolnChildrensMuseum.org or call Miss Flowers at (402) 477-4000, ext. 117.

One of the most rewarding experiences of working with children is the absolute delight and pride kids express to their parents over their creative work. My heart flits with giddy excitement when, upon pick up, a child drops everything else in his arms and can’t take another step without showing his parent something he made in camp. The sparkle of satisfaction and accomplishment I see in little one’s excited eyes is the ultimate reward. When a child tells a parent, “I made this” and often, “I made this for you,” it gets me every time. Those are the moments that inspired my plans for our winter camps; so our schedule is full of opportunities to make and create!
