National Children's Vision & Learning Month

NEWS FROM THE BIG

CHAIR

FINGERPRINTS

Did you know?... Kids need more than 15 visual skills to succeed in reading, learning, playing sports activities, and in everyday situations?

Studies by the National Institutes of Health and the National Eye Institute have discovered that more than 60 percent of students with learning problems have undiagnosed vision abnormalities that contribute to their difficulties. The American Optometric Association recommends that children receive their first eye exam by age 1, the next one when they are 3 years old and another before starting kindergarten. Enjoy fun ocular health activities in August provided by Ameritas and be sure to get your children’s vision checked before school starts!

Michele Good Friends President

The other day I told someone what I did for a living and they said “wow, so you are in charge of the Children’s Museum?” For some reason, at that moment, it really hit me. Every day I am “in charge” of leading and hopefully improving a very important part of Lincoln. What an honor and somewhat daunting task when you put it like that. Thanks friend.

This could be a daunting job but, luckily for our staff, we have our mission to guide us. As long as children and families who walk through our doors create, discover and learn through the power of play, we are successful. This is not only our mission, but what makes us unique with the many entertainment opportunities for Lincoln families.

Using play as a main learning tool is not a new concept, but when we opened our doors 26 years ago it was. Ever since that first day, our staff has understood the importance of play. You can see it in the way the Museum has grown and every time we add a new exhibit. Whether it’s gross motor skills when they are climbing and crawling or STEAM concepts as they experiment, they are learning. And it doesn’t just stop in our exhibits, did you know much of our education staff who run our camps are educators or education students as well?

Making sure all children in the Lincoln area have a safe place to learn through play is a responsibility that we don’t take lightly. What does that mean for you? Family time filled with The power of play isn’t something imagination, laughter, and we simply believe, but something priceless memories. Don’t worry, we know. How do we know? Much we’ll sneak in the learning without them even noticing. of our staff, including myself, come from an education Hope to see you here soon! background. As educators, we understand what inspires children to become lifelong learners. We know that what a child Tara Knuth experiences in their first three Executive Director years is a determining factor in how successful they will be the rest of their lives.

Tara Knuth

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR for a day! Monday, Oct. 17th

Think your child might rule the world someday? Why not start with being the boss at the most fun place in Lincoln! One lucky elementary student each year gets to spend a day as Lincoln Children’s Museum’s Executive Director. They get their own office, make important decisions, have a business lunch, and end the day by playing with ten of their closest friends. Applications will be available online or at the welcome desk starting September 1st.
