What is a Railsplitter?

LMU’s Nicknames

Lincoln Memorial University’s unique nickname for its athletics teams seems to always bring about the same question when the Railsplitters play on the road, “What is a Railsplitter?”

Lincoln Memorial University’s athletic teams have not always had the Railsplitter nickname. The early men’s teams were called the LMU Braves. That was changed during the 1924 football season when the name “Airedales” came into use. In the fall of 1931 it was decided that the name “Railsplitters” was more in the Lincoln tradition and the name has lasted to this day. The women’s teams were usually referred to as the “Lincoln Lassies” and the “Railsplitterettes” until basketball was discontinued after the 1945 season. When women’s basketball returned in 1973, they became the “Lady Railsplitters.”

The “Railsplitter” was Lincoln’s nickname as a presidential candidate in 1860. Lincoln and his cousin, Dennis Hanks, had once split 3,000 rails to be used as fences. Lincoln campaign supporters would carry banners supported by such rails. The rails symbolized the humble Western candidate with a common background.
