Cultural Orientation I Understanding how to recognize and respect cross-cultural boundaries is crucial for ministry in today’s multicultural situations. Parish Business Administration Increasingly, parishes look to lay professionals trained in administration to ensure that pastoral ministry can take place in such a way that both enhances and safeguards the missions of the church. Pastoral Care is a means of providing comfort to those suffering as a result of life’s challenges, including long-term or life-limiting illness,

death of a loved one, separation and divorce, or aging. This course will examine models and methods for the direct service of those suffering, guidance for the development of parish programs, and theological and spiritual fundamentals of care for people experiencing physical, spiritual and psychological suffering. This includes ministry at times of illness, death and bereavement; blessings and challenges of ministering to and with the elderly; and, detention ministry and the care of victims of crime and domestic violence. Comparative Theology This course is an introduction to the major theories and practices of comparative theology. As such, the course will address the debate over the theology of religions and will provide an introduction to the history and doctrines of various religions in dialogue with Christianity. Foundations of New Testament Theology The course objective is to acquire a working knowledge of and appreciation for the literary, historical, social, theological, and pastoral dimensions of the New Testament writings and their worlds. The course also encourages students to make connections between the New Testament writings and contemporary theological/pastoral issues. The content of the course includes reading the New Testament, and reading extensively in secondary literature on the New Testament and its study. Foundations of Theological Ethics

Liberation Theologies

This course introduces students to the foundations of Christian theological ethics. We will examine the relationships between the sources, methods, articulations, insights and weaknesses, and resonances and conflicts of moral theology. Specifically, we concentrate on the interpenetration between Scriptural themes, anthropological dimensions, voices from tradition, intellectual, theological, and socio-economic contexts, contemporary theological perspectives and debates, and practical moral questions. The objective is to analyze critically these intersections to understand the theoretical and practical dimensions of theological ethics. This is a cross-listed course. Islam

Orthodox Christian Spirituality

This course will introduce students to the Islamic religious tradition. We will begin with a discussion of pre-Islamic Arabia before examining the life of the Prophet Muhammad. The Qur’an and the Hadith will also be discussed in this first section. The second part of the course will examine aspects of Islamic civilization and culture. We will begin with a discussion of the split between Sunni and Shi‘i Islam. Next we will turn to an examination of Sufism, the mystical tradition in Islam. The final part of the course will be concerned with the modern phenomenon of Islam. We will examine themes such as the Nation of Islam, the role of Islam in Canada and the United States, Christian-Muslim dialogue, and the study of Islam after September 11, 2001. Psychological Foundations Spiritual Direction

This course explores the psychological aspects of pastoral ministry, and in particular, the ministry of spiritual direction as a helping relationship. The focus in this course is the cultivation of the communication skills needed to be an effective pastoral minister and spiritual director. Principal topics to be covered in-

Samkhya Karika The Samkhya Karika by Ishvarakrishna is the root text of the Samkhya system, which is regarded as one of the six “darshanas” or foundational perspectives of orthodox Hindu thought. Rick Morris, D.C. is a sports medicine chiropractor with more than 25 years experience and team doctor for the US Olympic Medical Team, the NBA, and UCLA Track and Field. Julie Mussché holds a MA in the field of Geography with a specialization in the area of environmental cognition and behavior, and social geography, with a focus on expressions of religion, sacred space and place on the landscape. Julie is the author Navigating the Spirit: Charting A Year’s Passage Through God’s Kingdom. Carlos completed his MA in Pastoral Theology at Loyola Marymount. Larry Payne is the co-author of international bestseller Yoga for Dummies and Yoga Rx. He is also co-founder of The International Association of Yoga Therapists, the yoga curriculum at The UCLA School of Medicine, and director of the Yoga Therapy Rx certification program at LMU Extension. Steven Sampson, M.D. was chief resident at Saint Vincent Medical Center of Manhattan in New York. Dr. Sampson recently formed The Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI) designed to advance research and training in the field of orthobiologics. Margaret Scharf, M.Ed. is a member of the Congregation of Dominican Sisters of Western Australia, whose background includes primary education and administration, development of religious education programs, training of catechists in both Australia and the Solomon Islands. Kathleen Schinhofen, D.Min. has worked nationally and ecumenically as an educator, consultant, counselor and facilitator. For many years she has provided pastoral counseling training for Deacon Candidates of the Diocese of Orange and is currently the associate director of Faith Formation for Orange. Jeanette Scott has overseen the many facets of employee services at Merle Norman Cosmetics in Los Angeles for over 30 years. She has been responsible for the areas of employee relations, labor law, compensation, health and safety, staffing needs and unemployment insurance. Jodi Shaw received her MA in theology from Loyola Marymount in May 2012. Her thesis explored the complex directionality of Kundalini in Srividya practice. Her Sanskrit studies began with former Extensions instructor Marcy Braverman Goldstein. Jeffrey Siker, Ph.D. is Professor of Theological Studies at LMU. Dr. Siker teaches in the area of New Testament theology and early Christianity, the history of biblical interpretation, and the use of the Bible in theological debate. Dr. Siker is an ordained Presbyterian minister in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. and has been at LMU since 1987. Michael Sinel, M.D. is assistant clinical professor at UCLA Medical Center and co-author of Yoga for Dummies. Norman Solomon, M.D. is a board certified internist and the medical director at the Motion Picture and Television Fund in Los Angeles. Jo Ann Tabor, C.S.J. is a member of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Orange, and throughout her years of commitment has ministered as a counselor, spiritual director, program developer, ministry skills facilitator, retreat director, resource person, mentor,

facilitator, administrator and educator. Matthew J. Taylor, Ph.D. is the founder of Dynamic Systems Rehabilitation Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, a yoga-based PT clinic. Richard Usatine, M.D. is vice chair for Education in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is also the recipient of the National Humanism in Medicine Award. Linda Vallejo has more than 30 years experience as a grantwriting consultant, grantwriter and grantwriting instructor. Ms. Vallejo has received more than $30 million in grant funds from foundation, corporate, government and individual donors for her many clients. Fay VanDerKar-Levinson, Ph.D. serves on the board of the Association of Educational Therapists and has held teaching posts at UCLA and Pepperdine University. Stephanie Waxman has been teaching for more than 25 years. She is the author of four books. Her latest novel, Divided Loyalties, was published in 2010. Dolphi Wertenbaker, M.D. has been teaching yoga since 1985, with an emphasis on individual therapeutic work. Amy Wheeler, Ph.D. teaches at California State University San Bernardino and is the research director of the Healing Yoga Foundation in San Francisco.
