About the Show...

H

igh School Musical originally debuted as a Disney Channel Original Movie on January 20, 2006, as a made for television film written by Peter Barsocchini and directed by Kenny Ortega, and rose quickly to become the most commercially successful movie in Disney Channel history with 7.7 million viewers. Its success translates into a known formula for greatness, with contributions from all aspects of the artistic process. The likability of the characters, led by Zac Efron’s portrayal of Troy Bolton, the paradox of the storyline, said to be a modern -day play on Romeo and Juliet, and the energy in the songs with their ability to both unite and empower, all combine seamlessly to create a relatable backdrop for this familiar journey towards self-discovery. High School Musical succeeded at highlighting the all too relatable personal struggles of rising above the labels imposed by society. With a soundtrack that was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, the show simply connected with its audiences and left joy in its path as it took its place among our new pop favorites. With an unmistaken cinematic hit on their hands, the stage adaptation of the film was born. Barsocchini’s story joined together with music and lyrics by David Nessim Lawrence, Matthew Gerrard, Robbie Nevil, Ray and Greg Cham, Drew Seeley, Randy Petersen, Kevin Quinn, Andy Dodd, Adam Watts, Bryan Lousielle, Faye Greenberg and Jamie Houston, and a book by David Simpatico. This collaboration acted quickly and by the summer of 2006, the first performance of the production took place at Stagedoor Manor summer theater camp. The success grew from there, and on January 12, 2007, the Theater of the Stars in Atlanta, Georgia staged the show marking it as the first professional company to produce the musical. A successful US tour followed launching the production across the map on August 1, 2007. Global audiences have enjoyed the show as each year has unfolded since 2006, and it’s ranking as the 5th most produced musical by high schools leaves no question about the infectious joy that is High School Musical on Stage!

Who’s Who Krish Batra (Mongo) is an 8th grader. Last year in Cinderella, he was a villager and a steward. He was in his 2nd grade play called Go Fish at Mary C. Howse Elementary School. Outside of the LMS play, he also plays soccer and the violin, swims for the YMCA swim team, and likes to play with his friends.

Thomas Baylis (Karaoke MC) is in 8th grade and is in his second year in the musical. Last year he was Cinderella’s father and the cheese merchant in the awesome adaption of Cinderella. The theater experience has truly been a wild and extremely enjoyable ride — everything from the early mornings to the long after-school days. He sends huge appreciation to everyone who’s gotten him through this journey, especially my family’s endless support and best wishes. In his free time, Tom enjoys watching movies, cooking (especially with garlic powder), and getting caught in the rain. Emily Bishop (Martha Cox) is in 8th grade. She performs in little plays and musicals at her church with the music program. Her favorite role so far has been Mrs. Noah. This is her first production with LMS theater. Her favorite things to do outside of LMS theater are hanging out with friends and swimming. She would like to thank her church choir leader, voice director, family friend, and so much more, Mrs. Gamble! She is the sole reason she tried theater, and she couldn’t be happier! Lastly, she would like to thank her parents for supporting her through this production; she loves you! Abigail DeWese (Ms. Darbus) is in 8th grade. In Cinderella she played a featured dancer. She has most recently been in Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies as Run, What a Knight! as Bad Betty, and A Year with Frog and Toad as Squirrel -- all at Barley Sheaf. Her favorite role was Run in Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies this past year. Outside of theater, Abby enjoys cheerleading and playing softball. She would like to thank her very supportive and loving family. Abigail would also like to thank the cast, crew, and directors for the amazing production and bonding experience.

Who’s Who Jack Dungan (Troy Bolton) is ecstatic to be cast as Troy! Jack’s prior roles include Charlie Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Bruce Bogtrotter in Matilda at SALT. Other favorite SALT Stagelight shows include Frozen, Jr. (Prince Hans), The Music Man, Jr. (Harold Hill), and Frog and Toad, Jr. (Toad). Past credits also include What a Knight! (King Arthur) at Barley Sheaf and Pirates of the Curry Bean (Captain Redbeard) at the 6GC. Jack is in 7th grade. He is the Student Council Vice President, enjoys singing in vocal ensemble, playing stand up bass in orchestra, and being in TV Studio at LMS. He also enjoys playing keyboards and singing in Downingtown School of Rock shows. Jack wants to thank Ms. Reimers and Mrs. Guidas-Sidorick for trusting and casting him in this role, and also for putting on the whole production! He would also like to thank the rest of the cast and crew for making this such a great experience! Special thanks to Mike Toolan and Monica Pica for their excellent coaching along the way! Nick Engle (Zeke Baylor) has been in a few other musicals such as Aladdin, The Jungle Book, Arf, and At the Bandstand. Playing Zeke has been his favorite role so far. Outside of the musical, Nick likes to play sports (especially soccer) and video games. He also plays percussion in the LMS band and is currently thinking about a future in the tech industry. Nick would like to thank Ms. Reimers for being a great mentor in my life as well as an awesome teacher, Mrs. Guidas-Sidorick for the amount of effort she put into me, and my family *sniff* for all the time they put into driving me to the musical and back (which he calculated to being about 13 hours). Georgia Hough (Dance Captain) is in 8th grade and is a dancer through and through. She has danced at Chester Valley Dance Academy for 11 years where she studies ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, and tap. Last year in LMS’s Cinderella, she played a featured dancer and the dove. Along with LMS theater, she also performs in Chester Valley’s annual recital and The Nutcracker, playing the role of Clara along with many other fun roles throughout the years. She would like to thank the staff, cast, and crew for making these last two years unforgettable.

Who’s Who Julia Judkins (Gabriella Montez) is an 8th grader and is so happy to be performing in her second LMS show. Last year, she was in Cinderella as a featured dancer and soloist. She also played Lady Axminster in What A Knight! at Barley Sheaf. Her favorite production so far has been Cinderella because it was one of her first major productions and she also met her closest friends. Her favorite thing to do outside of LMS theater is to sleep and to be with her friends and family! She would like to thank all her friends who encouraged and supported her everyday and helped her whenever she needed it. She would also like to thank her vocal teacher Mrs. Catherine Brown, plus Mrs. Guidas-Sidorick, Ms. Reimers, Ms. Jess, and Frau Brown for making this production possible. Lastly, she would like to thank her family for always being there even at the most stressful times, and for always believing in her dreams no matter what. Now, as a wise man once said, “This is where the fun begins.” Finn Labuda (Jack Scott) is in 7th grade and is an extroverted kid just happy to be at rehearsals with his friends. He participated in all his elementary school productions and was also in Barley Sheaf’s What a Knight! (Sir Render). His favorite role has been Jack Scott. He plays soccer outside of school and likes to hang out with friends. He hopes you enjoy the show! Tristan Lehrman (Coach Bolton) is in 8th grade. This is his first experience with musical theater, and he really enjoys playing Coach Bolton. He is a fun character to play; he's a harsh coach at times, but still remains a caring father to Troy.

Natalie Lisk (Kelsi Neilson) is in 7th grade. This is her 7th theater production and it is by far her favorite. She has been in many productions at her church and at Barley Sheaf. Her favorite Barley Sheaf show was Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies as narrator Billie Trumpington. Outside of school, Natalie loves to play cello, flute, and saxophone. She would like to thank all of her friends and family who have supported her throughout the production. She would also like to thank Mrs. Guidas-Sidorick and Ms. Reimers for choosing this amazing musical and for casting the best cast ever! 38

She was most recently seen in Willy Wonka as Veruca Salt, Mary Lennox Understudy in The Secret Garden, and Elsa in Frozen Jr, all at SALT Performing Arts. She was also an Older Student in Limelight Theatre’s professional version of Matilda. Lorelei would like to thank her supportive family and friends, her mom for always cheering her on, her incredible voice teacher Monica Pica, and Mrs. Guidas-Sidorick, Ms. Reimers, and Ms. Jess for making her dreams of playing Sharpay come true. Michael Prince (Chad Danforth) is in 8th grade. He did not participate in last year's musical, but did participate in Annie at SALT Performing Arts. His favorite character to play is Chad. Director’s Note

I

often think of High School Musical as a classic for the next generation. This show, originally airing in a film version in early 2006, brought the light and love of musical theater into the next millennia, and with it a new round of infectious songs and feel-good anthems describing teenage life and the challenges of growing up within the confines of societal expectations and labels. In the teenage maturation arc, it is common to fall victim to the narrowing view of how we see others and how we see ourselves. We can find ourselves watering down our own identity into a single identifying factor, or allowing others to do so, but that is a nearly certain way to suffocate our journey, stifle our potential, and limit the scope of our future. This is where we meet the students of East High, woefully stuck in the roles that have been assigned to them — in this case, as Brainiacs, Jocks, Thespians, Skaters, etc. facing the stigmas that relate to their selected activity, unsure of how to make their way down other paths without ridicule or judgement. As the show unfolds, we see walls drop and the magic of theater melt the labels and definitions of character that are placed on the students of East High. This is what has always moved me about the theater, the sweeping spell that moves across a group of artistically motivated students and allows them to create a space for one another free of judgement and void of conformity. A space that not only acknowledges individuality, but celebrates it. As a student, this is what theater did for me, allowing me to see myself in different ways, encouraging me to explore culture, fashion, philosophy, and mindset, while positively challenging my potential and creating a safe space for me to truly grow. Growing up in the Downingtown theater program, I remain connected to so many of my friends from that space and time, and I almost entirely attribute the strength of those relationships and my own personal growth to the acceptance of the individual that is so pervasive in theater. High School Musical showcases this beautifully. Reaching into this show, I was afforded the space to reflect on this aspect of our production, and what a strong theater program can give to our LMS students. How it can foster the acceptance of others, how it can encourage the idea of a healthy risk, and how it can create friendships that truly feel like family in the process. Seeing this group of LMS students bond as they have this year is a gift. It is what we collectively, as a production staff, hope to instill in your students through this program… the encouragement to be uniquely themselves, to drop their insecurities and step out. With theater, the act of pretending to be someone else truly opens doors, allowing us all to truly become so very much more ourselves than we ever have been before.

Who’s Who Sam Robertson (Ryan Evans) is in 8th grade. Last year, he was in Cinderella as a guard and was a part of stage crew. This is one of his first major productions and he loves it. His favorite role to play was Beast from Beauty and the Beast. Outside of school, Sam is a talented drummer, and also loves skiing and skimboarding at the beach. Sam would like to thank his directors for being so awesome and helping him throughout the musical. He also wants to thank his mom for being very involved in the costumes and set painting. He wants everyone to know that if you try, you will go far in life.

Thomas Stauffer (Jason) is in 8th grade. High School Musical is his first experience in musical theater. Outside of the musical, he likes to play bass guitar and play with his friends.

Themba Sweetland (Ripper) is in 8th grade. He participated in last year's production of Cinderella, and has also participated in a few productions at SALT. Themba enjoys playing Ripper and is excited to have a solo this year. In his free time he bikes, skates, and paints. Themba would really like to thank his parents for helping him practice and for driving him to all of these rehearsals. Ishika Vaidya (Taylor McKessie) is in 8th grade and is thrilled to be in her second show at LMS. Being in Cinderella in 7th grade was her first time being in a production and it was one of the best experiences in her life. Ishika would like to thank her family who always supports her, her friends who make the whole experience so much fun, and of course Mrs. Guidas-Sidorick and Ms. Reimers who without them there would be no show.

Tristin decided to come back and help out this year because she had so much fun when she was at LMS and wanted to make it as fun as possible for the middle schoolers this year. When Tristin is not in school, she likes to hang out with her friends, shop, and read.

Sophia Grausso (High School Student Director) is a 9th grader at Downingtown East. She was in past LMS shows as part of the ensemble for My Fair Lady and Cinderella. The musical was the best part of her middle school career because of all the good memories she made and she wants other kids to have as good of a time as she did. In her free time, Sophia likes to write, cook, and cry about fictional characters. Emily Grissom (Stage Crew Student Director) is a current senior at STEM Academy and is in her fifth and final year with LMS Musical Theater. She started her stage crew journey in 8th grade when she was on curtain for Footloose. Ever since then she has returned to LMS to help on crew with Frau Brown. These shows have been the highlights of her year as she gets to help bring the show from start to end and see everyone grow together as a team. She would like to thank her family for always coming to her shows, Paige Dombrowski for being by her side for the past three years (and for driving her), and Frau Brown for allowing her to come back every year and being a ray of sunshine through the hard times of tech week. She is every excited for these four shows and hopes you enjoy the production. 20
