Looking for a place to impress a client? Denton Record-Chronicle readers know just the place: The Greenhouse Restaurant. The local restaurant is just a few blocks away from the downtown Denton Square, at 600 N. Locust St. Modest and clean, the eatery has a small main dining room, a middle section of quiet booths, a bar with some table seating and a private room for meetings and parties. We can’t leave out the patio, a more recent addition to the business that, thanks to its choice location and sumptuous landscaping, is a fragrant and pretty dining spot during the spring. Patrons love the patio on summer nights, too. The Greenhouse serves appetizers – including a mouthwatering spinach artichoke dip – daily specials for omnivores and vegetarians (may we recommend the

BEST COFFEE SHOP Jupiter House 106 N. Locust St. 940-387-7100 www,jupiterhousecoffee.net At one time, the downtown Denton

location of Jupiter House Coffee sold a Tshirt. On it was a circle of mere mortals, each one bowing (and we’re talking forehead to the floor) to a huge decanter of coffee. Seems Denton Record-Chronicle readers might be prone to go down on bended knee for the locally owned java joint. Here’s why: You’d be hard pressed to replace a staff of laid-back, friendly baristas who remember your name and your poison if you visit them during just a few shifts. The coffee. Fair trade beans are ground fresh daily and each cup is brewed while you wait. The coffeehouse keeps a staple menu, a plus for those who almost always buy a small crazy cosmonaut with skim milk and no whipped cream, thanks. (The perennial blends all have aeronautical names, too!) But the adventurous coffeehound gets to experiment at the row of urns that are topped off as soon as patrons tap them. The downtown café. With bare brick walls, a revolving show of local art and plenty of music, Jupiter House is a place

to be if you want to sample Denton’s creative reflex while you sip. And if you just want to finish that term paper or check e-mail while listening to spotify? The tables are plentiful and the wifi is free. Jupiter House Coffee keeps its main location at 106 N. Locust St. There is outdoor seating, but chances are you’ll only want to sit there if you’re a smoker. The second location is at 503 W. University Dr., where you can sample candies and chocolate with your brew. Hours at both locations are 6 a.m. to midnight daily. Runner-up: Starbucks Bragging rights: Café du Luxe.

Since its inception in 2002, the restaurant has continued to make a name for itself among the local Square music and bar food. Executive Chef Sheena Croft recently made changes to the tapas menu which now features smoked salmon bruschetta with capers and tomato, gorgonzola chips, green beans fries, and lobster ricotta fritters. To keep it food conversation going, since April 2009, Hannah’s Off the Square also has a blog via Blogger (http://hannahsoffthesquare.blogspot.co m) where readers can find what vegetables are in season, get information about local events, and see just some great photography. Downtown Denton got a bit of Downtown Grapevine last February when Weinberger’s Delicatessen opened its doors blocks off the Square. A year later, it is part of Denton’s Best. “I was very pleasantly surprised; we are humbled for sure,” said Mike Wing, manager of the sandwich shop about its mention in the annual city list. Weinberger’s Delicatessen brought its Chicago-style deli style to Denton introducing sandwiches and depending on the weather, patrons order the popular California Club, if it is cold outside or the Reuben or Italian beef if they want to have something to keep them away from the heat. And since Weinberger’s is known to “want each sandwich you try to be the best it can be,” they did their research and

BEST CATERER Extreme Cuisine Catering 2126 Hamilton, Suite 430, Argyle 940-380-8770 www.extremecatering.com

During the past decade, Chef Matt Fairchild of Extreme Cuisine Catering can only recall one client telling him he was not pleased with their order. “He asked me to add more spinach,” he said explaining the ingredient his client felt was needed in one of their plates. For the most part, Fairchild said, clients seem to be pretty pleased to try something new, even if at first it might look different. “We push people into directions they

don’t think they want to go at first, but then they are pleasantly surprised when they get there…,” Fairchild said about introducing his worldwide cuisine to his customers. Fairchild and Chef Kathleen Francis started their catering business in Denton in 1999. “I played with food even as a young school girl creating fudge and other recipes to win cooking contests or just send with my sister on game day bus trips,” Francis wrote on her website, “My whole life, I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with food tastes and textures.” Years later, at their location in Argyle, the duo helps plan ladies luncheons, elegant corporate catering or a special house dinner. Extreme Cuisine Catering also provides culinary arts classes where customers can learn basic skills as well as advanced methods of professional cooking. Add to that, a win for the city’s best for the first time making everything just extremely gratifying. “I think it is a big honor and appreciate everyone who voted for us,” Fairchild said. Just check out the online reviews to see why Dr. Gaylen Fickey won the Best of Denton honors. Adjectives range from organized and respectful to gentle and informative – all strong reasons for the votes they garnered. Here’s one review from a self-titled happy customer: I didn’t experience any pain during my teeth cleaning. They are always very careful and gentle. They go out of their way to make everyone feel equally respected and cared for. I’ve seen client favoritism at some of the other places I’ve been, and I really appreciate the extra effort they make to avoid that here. They always make an extra effort to make me feel respected and attended to. They always listen to every question or concern I may have. Dr. Fickey, who has been a part of the

Denton County community since 1975, received his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University in 1971 and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from University of Texas Dental Branch, Houston, in 1975. To ensure constant improvement in his knowledge and clinical skills, Dr. Fickey attends numerous continuing education courses every year. Runner-up: Dr. Gary Taylor Bragging rights: Dr. Marc Morris

place for children category,” said Frank Kudlac, owner of the gym,” And we were always losing to Chuck E Cheese’s.” This year’s win is quite an accomplishment for Achievers, especially since this year marks the business 20th anniversary. “Adding the best gymnastics school in Denton to that list fills us with pride and accomplishment,” Kudlac said, “But I can’t take 100 percent of the accolade for this because it [the award] represents our staff, our facilities and instructors and all of our programs, it represents all of our efforts.” Some of the features of the 20,000 square foot of air conditioned gym include a full-size competition cheer floor, dedicated pre-school area with equipment designed for pre-schoolers, a horizonal rock climbing wall as well as DVR video replay systems and a complete Sonos Wi-Fi powered music system that plays throughout the facility, its website says. Kudlac spent 33 years as the head coach of the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers before retiring in 2011. For his contributions he was named the recipient

BEST INDEPENDENT INSURANCE AGENCY Ramey & King Insurance 510 N. Interstate 35E 940-382-9691 www.rameyking.com Long a part of Denton’s business fabric, Ramey & King Insurance originally opened its doors shortly after 1876 when Oliver Perry Poe, an early mayor, envisioned the significance of the insurance industry in the growth and development of a promising community. M.L. Ramey King first became involved in 1920 to begin a new tradition that has lasted throughout the ensuing decades.

THE HISTORY

In 1962, Terrell W. King became a partner and in 1964, was joined by Marvin Ramey – hence the current name of the longtime Denton business. Today, Jeff and James King operate the business – carrying on the family tradition of offering quality customer service and ensuring customer needs are met whether for commercial industry or family homes, group health or for individuals. BEST INDEPENDENT PET GROOMING SERVICE Beau’s Bath House and Doggie Spa 1800 Brinker Road, Suite 270 940-382-9274 www.beausbathhouse.com

“You supply the love; we supply everything else and we clean up the mess,â€? with a concept so inviting, why not try it out right? Denton customers took Owner Ginna Anthony to her word in 2010 and two years later, it has made the list of Denton’s Best in the grooming category. “We are very proud we won‌that our customers have selected us,â€? Anthony

said. Beau’s Bath House is named after Anthony’s pal, a 5-year-old Great Pyrenees, Shar-Pei and elkhound mix. He is known to visit the store at least once a month to check things out. And ensure that his friends are quite comfortable. He was even present during the Denton’s Ribbon cutting held last year. Since opening two years ago, the selfserve and full-service dog washing business has made itself known through the popular Beau’s Annual Party – the one place where pets can enjoy from low vaccinations, and shelter pet adoptions are made available. Anthony partners with the Texas Coalition for Animal Protection in order to provide vaccinations for local pets and local shelters to help pets find a new home. At their recent event held March 10, 85 vaccinations were given out in just two hours, in spite of the rainy weekend. And there were free hot dogs and drinks, so pet owners were pretty happy. Anthony is strict about ensuring all dogs stay current with the Texas vaccinations. Interested customers need to make

sure their friends’ rabies, DHLP, and bordetella are up to date in order to use Beau’s place. “And we have not had any problems because of that rule, Anthony said, “It is about the health and safety of their pets. Runner-up: The Pampered Pooch Pet Salon Bragging rights: Barks-N-Bubbles

Shop at Twice as Nice Resale frequently since new merchandise is available daily, is one of the recommendations from officials at Denton’s upscale resale shop. “Regular visits will increase your chances of finding what you are looking for–or snagging an unexpected treasure,” the store website reads. Twice As Nice resale store doubles as a haven for bargain shoppers and a support system for women with pregnancy needs. Woman to Woman Pregnancy Resource, a nonprofit organization, opened Twice As Nice in 2004, at a smaller location on Loop 288 to help fund the services it provided. By 2008, Twice as Nice opened on Oak Street, tripling its space. The Twice as Nice carries clothing for men, women and children as well as baby accessories, furniture, electronics and

even household items. Store Manager Rita Sprabary oversees the store and its many volunteers that support the center by sorting donated merchandise, stocking shelves and helping with its operations. Runner-up: Circa 77 Bragging rights: Downtown Mini Mall

around town BEST BAR Dan’s Silverleaf 103 Industrial St. 940-320-2000 www.danssilverleaf.com Dan’s Silverleaf isn’t a big venue, but it’s among the most important in Denton. The local public house was the first night spot to move to Industrial Street, a short city block once occupied by a feed

store and a mom-and-pop grocery market. Dan’s originated on Elm Street, but shuttered when hard times hit. Co-owner Dan Mojica pulled himself up by the bootstraps, however, when a silent partner approached him and help re-locate at 103 Industrial St. They put bright, matte blue paint on the outside walls, erected a curving bar near the Russell Street wall, then added a nice-size stage and tech booth. Then

Mojica opened the taps, armed a friendly bar staff with bottle openers and corkscrews and started booking some of the best Red Dirt, Texas and Americana music acts into his club. The crowds came for the music, bought drinks and kept coming. Mojica stayed friendly and helped form the Industrial Street Guild, an association for the the merchant neighbors who joined him on the block – Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Rooster’s Roadhouse and Seniors In Motion.

These days, you can still catch Asleep at the Wheel, Brave Combo and up-an-comers like Hares on the Mountain. Bands are proudly recording live albums at Dan’s – if you haven’t sampled The Boxcar Bandits Live at Dan’s, you should. On the nights when the stage is still, patrons can catch a game and some gossip. Doors open at about 4 p.m. and close at 2 a.m. most days. Arts and Jazz Festival www.dentonjazzfest.com The Denton Arts and Jazz Festival is one of the longest running events in Denton. The free, three-day event has something for everyone—music, art, dance and food. Top acts come to Denton to perform the tens of thousands who flock to the city’s main park each day. Stages throughout Quakertown Park also feature the varied local talent from the very young to the wise among us. Everyone who attends has a favorite memory - from the plethora of food delights to the booth after booth of beautiful artistry brought from across the state and country in the form of paintings, jewelry, woodwork and much, much more. It’s the perfect place to bring friends and family, to see and be seen, to enjoy the fruits of living in such a vivacious and

eclectic community. The festival started over 30 years ago under a different name and now attracts more than 200,000 attendees.
