T

he Denton Community Theatre aims to celebrate people who have contributed to the PointBank Black Box Performing Arts Center’s donor tile wall with the production Top Hats and Tiles this weekend. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. today through Sunday at the venue. Mike Barrow, Denton Community Theatre managing director, said the wall of 160 ceramic tiles has been an ongoing project the last two years.

Individuals purchased tiles at various price levels to assist in paying off the building improvement loan needed for the space. More than 60 tiles are still available for purchase. “The main thing that we want to say to people is how appreciative that we are that they bought the tiles … and this is a celebration in their honor,” Barrow said. Top Hats and Tiles features Denton vocalists Katie Moyes Williams, Pat Sherman, Kay Lamb, Maria Valastro Harris and Sherna Armstrong, accompanied by pianist John Priddy, performing numbers saluting the legendary ladies of Broadway. Pre-show entertainment, beginning at 6:45 p.m., features Denton piano man Bob Rogers.

Donna Trammell, the show’s creator and director, said Top Hats spotlights women and features songs from Broadway shows with feminine names or traits. The full-length show, which clocks in at about an hour and a half, has the five featured vocalists stepping to a microphone and performing selections from Broadway shows including Annie, Aida and others, cabaret-style. Collectively, the five vocalists have about 75 years’ experience in previous productions at Denton’s Campus Theatre, Trammell said. “We do some [songs] from [the] 1930s, and all the way up through Wicked and the things that are showing now,” Trammell said. “It’s sort of for every-

he opening show of the University of North Texas’ 2012-13 theater season joins theater, dance, English, history and music students. Guest director Maggie Harrer said the world premiere musical calls for that kind of collaboration. A Jazz Dream is the adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Harrer, the dramaturge-in-chief and a longtime jazz fan, said she knew the popular Shakespearean comedy was destined to be set as a musical. “In fact, there was a Broadway musical version of the play in the 1930s, but the script was lost. Some of the music was saved,” said

Harrer, a freelance director from New York City. “The play is perfect for a jazz setting. You have the young lovers, the passion. And in Shakespeare’s verse, iambic pentameter, the emphasis is on the second syllable. In jazz, the emphasis is on the

second beat. And that’s just like the heartbeat, ba-BUM.” Harrer enlisted faculty member Richard DeRosa to lead graduate students in arranging songs she selected, from the 1890s to the 1930s, such as “Jeepers Creepers.” DeRosa’s students also composed music just for the show. The musical is set in Manhattan in the present. Occupy Wall Street protesters have set up camp along the streets of the Financial District. The barons of Wall Street are at a gala ball in the Egyptian exhibit inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In Central Park, fairies and street artists resist the order of finance with the passion of creativity and love. UNT is producing the first staging of a musical Harrer said she hopes to open on Broadway — after productions in two other U.S. regions. — Lucinda Breeding

With its fifth album under its belt, Portland, Ore.-based band The Helio Sequence has been on the road since early September and will be touring until the end of November. Prior to an appearance at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, the indie-electronic act will play Dan’s Silverleaf on Friday, supported by Ramona Falls. “Denton is definitely one of my favorite places to play,” singer and guitarist Brandon Summers said. “There’s just something about the vibe there.” The Helio Sequence formed

in 1996 when Summers and drummer/keyboardist Benjamin Weikel were fresh out of high school. The two began playing music together but had yet to form an actual band. It wasn’t until Summers was asked to play a family picnic and had Weikel join him that The Helio Sequence came together. The band’s name came about after it was subtly suggested to Summers. The Helio Sequence’s newest disc boasts a companion album asked what the band was called and he answered, “The Helio Sequence,” the name just seemed right, Summers said. Summers says the band’s base in the Northwest has a definite influence on their music, especially because of the explosion of the local music scene when they first started. The sound of the new album, Negotiations, is drawn from feelings of depth, space and realism. Summers says the new album is meant to be listened to all the way through instead of as a series of singles. When fans buy Negotiations from the band’s label, Sub Pop Records, a companion album,

Aces, will be delivered with it. Inspired by the Flaming Lips’ sonic experiments, the band made the two albums to be listened to simultaneously. “The idea behind that was just an extension of the big picture,” Summers says. “It’s similar, and continues on the same space themes.” Although their tunes could be considered atmospheric, The Helio Sequence’s live show is anything but relaxed. “It’s less of a relaxed atmosphere and very much a rock show,” Summers said. “The show goes through many peaks and valleys — it’s an overall experience.”

The Sessions takes several sensitive topics and makes them poignant, funny and natural. And it also showcases two brave performances from two actors who lay bare not only their bodies, but also their rawest emotions. Ben Lewin wrote and directed The Sessions, taking autobiographical elements from the life and writings of Mark O’Brien. To his credit, Hawkes persuasively embraces his character, giving him a full presence despite the obvious physical limitations.

The Sessions Rated R, 95 minutes. Opens Friday at the Angelika Plano and the Magnolia in Dallas.

Lewin never makes Mark an object of pity, nor does he turn his film into an overwrought television drama. Instead, Mark is a conflicted 38-year-old male. He has never experienced physical intimacy of any sort but wants to. Lewin depicts Mark as a regular guy with all requisite male needs and preoccupations. He just happens to be

Finally, Mark enlists the services of “sexual therapist” Cheryl (Helen Hunt). In their sessions, which complement Mark’s spiritual ones, Cheryl explains the difference between her profession and prostitution. But the distinction never becomes clear until she begins her work. And then it does. Mark has an erratic and in some places heightened sense of touch, a condition that makes him jumpy, while making Cheryl’s job seem impossi-

She teaches Mark not only about his own body but about the regular mating habits of couples, something unfamiliar, and surprising, to him. Although Mark cannot move on his own, the director never lets The Sessions become static. Instead, Mark moves around Berkeley, Calif., thanks to a series of caretakers and friends. In the interim, Lewin provides full portraits of both Mark and Cheryl, letting us understand how they have both become the people they are. And both prove worth getting to know.

olunteers plan to transform the Center for the Visual Arts’ Festival Hall into a Tuscanthemed wine cellar, but they’ll still have plenty of Texana on hand for The Arts Guild’s annual Auction for the Arts on Saturday, Nov. 10. Terry Nobles, vice president for the guild, said the group expects to raise another $40,000 to $50,000 this year. Each year, proceeds from the group’s auction go directly to Denton arts groups. Since 1980, the group has raised and contributed more than $1 million to support the city’s arts scene, with the annual auction being its major fundraising event. For this year’s auction, “An Evening in Tuscany,” the main room of the Greater Denton Arts Council’s building will be filled with rustic barrels and bistro-style seating, guild members said. Guests will be greeted under a Tuscan arch with a complimentary glass of wine and can nosh on artisan breads, cheeses, grapes and other finger foods donated by more than 20 local restaurants. The silent auction will open at 6 p.m. and go through 8 p.m. The live auction should begin at about 8:15 p.m., Nobles said.
