Audiences draw close to ‘Woods’ I f you think fairy tales are just for children, you’ve got to see Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical, Into the Woods, as presented by the University of North Texas’ Summer Opera Workshop this weekend. The story combines characters from the Brothers Grimm tales of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella into one cleverly intertwined tale of a childless baker and his wife who want a family, and their quest to remove a witch’s curse. “The different characters get entangled in each other’s fairy tales,” said opera music director Stephen Dubberly, who said this particular work was chosen in celebration of Sondheim’s 80th birthday. “We consider this a masterpiece,” Dubberly said. “It’s a challenge vocally, orchestrally and dramatically.”

Jack (Tony Hughes) is manhandled by his mother (Maggie Smith) in Into the Woods. Sondheim’s treatment of those fairy tales is intricate and sophisticated, yet the opera is very accessible to audiences, Dubberly said. The UNT pro-

duction — which combines performers from the opera program, the dance and theater department, and the local community — will be staged in the

round, which means the audience surrounds the set. Dubberly said staging in the round is “always a challenge” for performers, but it allows the audience to have a more immediate experience with the production. “It’s wonderful family entertainment,” Dubberly said. “The whole family will recognize and enjoy the fairy tales as they are presented in the piece.” Be forewarned: Into the Woods doesn’t end happily ever after. There’s a worthwhile moral to the story, however: Be careful you wish for, because there are always consequences. The performances are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Lyric Theatre at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, 1200 North Texas Blvd. Tickets cost $10. For reservations, call the box office at 940-369-7802 or visit www.thempac.com. — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

Dark Dark Dark plays Sunday night at Hailey’s Club.

Darken the corners Minnesota-based folk act smolders with raw emotion Dark Dark Dark ends its coast-to-coast tour this Sunday at Hailey’s, 122 W. Mulberry St. By the time the Minneapolis indie folk band makes it to Denton, the group should have put the spit and polish on tunes from its second album, scheduled for release in October. Wild Go follows the release of the six-song EP Bright Bright Bright on Supply and Demand Music. Both discs feature the songwriting collaborations of accordionist-pianist Nona Marie Invie and banjo player and clarinetist Marshall LaCount, the ensemble’s core. The band also includes choir members Walter McClements on piano, accordion and trumpet, Jonathan Kaiser on cello and guitar, Todd Chandler on bass and Brett Bullion on percussion. The combination of musicians and instruments makes for a fully orchestrated-sounding package with keyboard and accordion as the anchors —

although if you do the math, it’s more on the scale of classical chamber music. Something about hearing an accordion automatically wrenches listeners’ hearts. Sure enough, Dark Dark Dark’s song lyrics would support that gut-grabbing reaction. Even the song “Bright Bright Brightâ€? doesn’t escape the heavy, minor-key cast: “You always cared for me/And I pushed you in the dark/And I wanted to tell you/I wanted to tell you/But I lie, I lie/Oh, I lie, I lie/I hurt myself/Nearly as much as I hurt you./And I wanted to tell you/Oh my bright, my bright/Oh you the sweetest one ‌â€? In contrast to the sweet sadness of the accordion, Invie’s flat-tone vocals are delivered in an equally flat manner — and yet it wouldn’t work any other way. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show is open to all ages. Tickets are $6 for those 21 and older, and $7 for those younger than 21. The evening’s entertainment also includes Spooky Folk, Fox and the Bird and Jeremy Fuller. — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

rave Combo is ready for Denton to do the Kikiriki — pronounced “kee-kee-ree-kee. Kikiriki is the Dentonbased band’s latest album, which borrows from the band’s catalog with some new work thrown into the mix. For fans who are ready to hear the album — which comes from the busy minds of the city’s two-time Grammy-winning polka band — be at Dan’s Silverleaf at 10 p.m. Saturday for the band’s release party. Past discs have caught Brave Combo in a particular groove, but Kikiriki shows off the band’s knack for diving into any style that tickles its fancy and rendering something fresh, clever and infectiously entertaining. The title track is infused with sounds of a Serbian brass band, with the guys taking “Just Because to a polkaswinging corner. “Polish National Anthem is moody, broody and lush with a

DCT stages Mel Brooks’ witty, tongue-in-cheek comedy ‘Producers’ By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

W

hen Mel Brooks turned his 1968 film The Producers into the Broadway musical, the story lent itself to heft in every sense of the word. The comedy was adapted to the stage in the grand style and scale of the classic MGM musical. Massive dance numbers? Got ’em.

Big, brash songs fated for Broadway belters? Check. Sets that take up room in a lazy, luxe sort of attitude? You betcha. Who in the world would take such a spectacular spectacle of a show and shoehorn it into a small community theater stage — without losing a particle of largesse? “Only a couple of morons would try that,” said Bill Kirkley, playfully slinging an arm around his co-director Aileen Stark. Stark picked up the joke. “Exactly,” Stark said. “Only someone crazy would try something like this.” Stark and Kirkley had to take a close

look at their story. Theater producer Max Bialystock and accountant Leo Blume decide they stand a better chance of getting rich with a flop than a blockbuster. They conceive of a musical within the musical — and title it Springtime for Hitler. Every move the men make is designed to bring the cur-

tain down on the show with shame that will shudder down the Great White Way, and they gamble their livelihoods by betting against the production’s success. They spare no expense, and raise funds by lending Bialystock’s motley libido to lonely old women with money. Springtime for Hitler ends up being a hit. “We had to look at the story and figure out how to make it work in the space,” Kirkley said. “We had to create a set that could be the office and be the theater.” In the Broadway touring production — and in New York City — the big sets were put on tracks. Costumes were

both engineered and built. Kirkley, Stark and technical director Mike Strecher (who appears as Carmen Ghia) created a revolving set

that breaks apart. On one side, it’s the entrance of the theater. Spun around by the running crew, it becomes the Bialystock & Blume headquarters. Players and crew members have had to work together to make set changes. Costume designer Marsha Keffer built costumes that sparkle — and distribute weight. Showgirls parade across the stage wearing enormous, Germanculture icons on their heads. “We had to scale things back,” Kirkley said. “There were some things we couldn’t cut because the audience is expecting them. They’re going to want to see old ladies dancing with walkers. They’re going to want to see Roger’s purple apartment.” The company has brought some of Denton’s most popular performers to the stage for the show. Tyler Donahue plays the very fey director, Roger DeBris. Mandy Rausch is the Swedish blonde bombshell, Ulla. Sean Frith plays the role of Bialystock and newcomer Tyler Lohr plays the show’s nebbish producer, Leo. Rausch said the show is the sort of summer fare community theater actors can have fun with. Ulla distracts the producers with her blond hair and buxom figure. Rausch said the affected Swedish accent is the topper. “They’re cartoon characters,” she said. “For me, it’s easier to play a cartoon character than it is to play a real character and find real emotion. It’s easy, and it’s a lot of fun.” The show opens Friday at the Campus Theatre and runs for the next three weekends. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

A CLASSIC MUSICAL WITH GROWN-UP HUMOR

M

usical theater buffs can’t resist a show like The Producers, said Bill Kirkley, onehalf of the directorial team bringing the show to the Campus Theatre for the next three weekends. It’s a love letter to the form, celebrating huge dance and musical numbers, luxuriating in a massive set and employing plenty of showgirl feathers

and sparkles. But be warned. The show not only makes clever use of a comedic Adolf Hitler, but it revels in the flamboyant, over-the-top, mincing, prancing, preening and fabulous men of theater. The Producers is fit for families, but those with stiff, puritanical necks won’t appreciate the jokes. The naughty, bawdy jokes. The many unrepentant —

and oft-nonverbal — gay jokes. But what should audiences expect from a musical about two con men who create a big Broadway show about Hitler’s joie de vivre? Choreographer Cindy Lee uses goose-stepping as a dance step that turns Hitler ridiculous, especially when danced by Tyler Donahue. “Mel Brooks created this wanting to

bring down the terror Hitler brought into the world,” Kirkley said. “What better way to make Hitler something that isn’t frightening [than] by making him a clown? We need to laugh at him. I think Brooks was spot-on in his decision to do that.” To exorcise Hitler’s ghost, Brooks makes him a laughingstock, and the audience needn’t hold back.

OPENING FRIDAY The Disappearance of Alice Creed (##) Lurid low-budget thriller about two men (Eddie Marsan and Martin Compston) who kidnap a wealthy Englishwoman (Gemma Arterton) and hold her for ransom, only to see complications arise when past secrets are revealed. It’s an intimate three-character piece that establishes a sense of dread, but doesn’t translate that into consistent suspense. Writerdirector J Blakeson has a confident visual style, but his script falls apart in the final half. The level of violence might be off-putting to some. Rated R, 98 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson The Father of My Children (###1/2) A failing French film producer (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) feels pressure from all sides — his family, his financiers and his troubled film production. When he takes matters into his own hands, the results reverberate exponentially. A sage examination of the residual effects of the sins of the father. Written and directed by Mia HansenLove. Not rated, 110 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen The Other Guys A detective more interested in paperwork (Will Ferrell) and a street-tough cop (Mark Wahlberg) are partnered up. With Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — The Associated Press Step Up 3D Street dancers and a college freshman square off in a competition against world-class hiphop dancers. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — AP Wild Grass (##) The amazing 88year-old director Alain Resnais continues to push narrative limits but unfortunately stumbles in this, his latest. A middle-aged married man (Andre Dussollier) finds the wallet of a stranger (Sabine Azema). He returns it, but when she is not grateful enough, he stalks her. From there, Resnais takes the story off in numerous directions, with few believable or even interesting. Unpredictable film but not in a good way. Not rated, 104 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.

to bury the most interesting characters in favor of focusing on Jack for his more mainstream appeal. You wish the filmmaker would have had more courage to follow through with the darker potential of his material. Where the film succeeds is in its depiction of criminals trying to outsmart each other using whatever means necessary. That’s nothing new, but the stakes and the setting lend a fresh angle. Like the characters at its center, Middle Men winds up trying too hard to please too many people. TODD JORGENSON can be reached at 940-566-6871. His e-mail address is tjorgenson@ dentonrc.com. loyalty is brought into question during the simple interrogation of a Russian defector who accuses her of being a spy. One of her colleagues (Liev Schreiber) stands by Salt, while another (Chiwetel Ejiofor) insists she be brought in for questioning. Red herrings and clever twists can be found amid the nonsense, but Salt the character remains more compelling than Salt the movie. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — T.J.

Entrepreneurs can be found in all walks of life. You have your mom-andpop outfits that perform months of tireless market research, then use their hard work to show a small profit after developing a loyal customer base. Then there are the types who know nothing about business, come up with an idea during a night of drinking in the basement, know the right people, and wind up stumbling into a fortune. It’s the latter that provides the launching point for Middle Men, a crime drama inspired by the true story behind an invention that spurred the evo-

lution of Internet pornography. Specifically, the film takes place in 1995, when the online movement was in its infancy. It follows a pair of smart but completely disorganized technology geeks (Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht) who develop a method for accepting credit card payments online, therefore opening up a new set of possibilities for their site filled with scanned photos of naked women.

Enter Jack (Luke Wilson), a family man with a reputation for fixing troubled companies, who sees the potential for millions but winds up caught in a mess involving the FBI and a sleazy lawyer (James Caan) with shady connections. Before long, Jack’s life and family are threatened as he gets caught up in a whirlwind of sex, money and fame. Director George Gallo (Double Take), who also cowrote the script, smartly throws some laughs into the mix, even as he embellishes the plot to the point where it forms a predictable story arc. The whole thing needs an edgier approach, both visually and narratively. The subject matter remains intriguing, even if Gallo seems

performance of Zac Efron can save. The title character, played by Efron (High School Musical, 17 Again), is an ace sailboat racer who shares a mutual admiration with his younger brother. But when tragedy strikes their family, it hits Charlie especially hard, causing him to give up his promising sailing career and retreat to the life of a recluse. The sappy, predictable screenplay aims to be an examination of grief, but ends up

being trite and trivial. With Charlie Tahan, Kim Basinger and Ray Liotta. Rated PG-13, 99 minutes. — T.J. Dinner for Schmucks (##) Loose remake of the French farce The Dinner Game follows Tim (Paul Rudd), a financial executive on the verge of a big promotion who must find an idiot to invite to his boss’ dinner for oddballs. Enter Barry (Steve Carell), an eccentric taxidermist who isn’t in on the joke, then winds up

ruining Tim’s life. There are a few big laughs from a solid cast, and it is an improvement on its dismal source material, but the film turns flat when it tries to be heartfelt. Directed by Jay Roach (Meet the Parents). Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — T.J. Salt (###) High-octane espionage thriller showcasing one of the physically toughest heroines we’ve seen in quite some time. Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is a CIA officer whose
