Buster Maloney and Justin Harmon play all of the characters in Denton Community Theatre’s Red, White and Tuna — including Star (Maloney, left) and disc jockey Arles Struvie (Harmon). The show takes audiences back to Tuna, Texas, where the women are tall, the men like a little snort of liquor, and everyone likes their potato salad “tangy.”

ove Hunter, a DentonDallas band, will bring its classic rock-influenced set to Dan’s Silverleaf on Saturday. The group began as a group that got together just to record, but turned into a bona fide band. Dove Hunter, which cites the sounds of the late ’60s and early ’70s as influences, puts a contemporary edge on classic album rock. Bassist/keyboard player Chad DeAtley said that each member of the four-piece band brings a particular mix to their collective sound. “We have a lot of similar tastes, but I think it’s the ones that aren’t similar that make Dove Hunter who we are,” DeAtley said. Dove Hunter is working on recording a full-length album full of new material. “Right now, we’re figuring out what platform we want to use to record the album, but I think we’ve reached a decision there too. The rest is easy,” DeAtley said. “We just have to learn when to leave things alone and say, ‘Let’s move on.’ We have a tendency to overthink things.”

‘Grease’ is the word Grease is kind of like Law & Order: It’s always playing somewhere. For Denton County fans of the well-known musical about Danny, Sandy and Rydell High School, the closest “somewhere is North Central Texas College in Gainesville. The college’s department of dance and drama continues its production this weekend. Grease is a simple story. Sandy Dumbrowski falls for

Danny Zuko over the summer. They part ways, only to be reunited at Rydell, where Danny is a macho member of the T-Bird gang. High school politics mix with 1950s-era rock ’n’ roll, and everyone hopes for a happy ending. NCTC presents the original stage version of the musical. Later adaptations of the show included songs written expressly for the 1978 film.

Beasties menu of Haskins’ theatrics and the band’s musical skill — which is substantial. The Hokamp brothers could easily spend the rest of their professional lives gigging and in studio sessions. Robert Hokamp was the only high school student whom University of North Texas jazz guitar instructor Fred Hamilton would accept back when the younger Hokamp was at Ryan High School. Matt Pole splits his stage time between guitar and rhymes in Denton rock and hip-hop outfits. But the Beasties are known as much for Haskins’ antics as it is for the sort-of-ska, sort-ofsurf punk sounds. The lead vocalist screams himself hoarse, vaults off the stage and occasionally gives an audience member his full attention and a facial contusion. And he always, always strips down to a pair of tiny panties. The resulting image is an eyeful. Haskins stands about 5-foot-9 and sports an important belly and random swatches of thick, curly body hair. Then there’s the earful. “Exterminate! Exterminate!” Haskins bellows, usually with enough volume to grate his throat. He’s gotten the band blacklisted from several clubs, and it seemed that the Beasties might have played its first and final set at 35 Conferette, when

gant black script on his wrist. Haskins dreamed up the Beasties when he was a whelp at Ryan High School. By 2003, the Wee-Beasties were a staple of the underage house-show scene. The Beasties always traded on volume and the kind of energy generally associated with nuclear reactors and teenage boys. The guitar, bass and drums were fearless even then, and Haskins had a brass section that borrowed from Ryan High’s most gifted band students. The Wee-Beasties has a reputation for mosh pit mayhem and songs that seem meant to either perplex or offend. “Gay Pride” is Kill Them’s taunt at religious ideologues, with the Beasties daring the listener to forbid boy-on-boy affection. Haskins adopts a leer whenever he interacts with women, and he lives to upend any expectation that an artist be politically correct. The band’s upcoming 7-inch record Don’t Shred On Me: Volume 1 — with a B-side supplied by Grammy-winning Denton band Brave Combo — continues the Beasties’ out-ofcontrol posture, but Haskins insists it’s not out of bounds in terms of sexual politics. “I know everyone thinks I’m this sexual predator, but that’s just not true,” he said. “This record is very pro-women. It’s written like I’m a really bad guy, yeah. If you take our record at face value, it’s operating from the standpoint that a lot of women

have problems with their dads. But I will never raise my son to treat women badly. And this album is a tribute to every woman who’s ever gone beyond what she knew was right with a man. Because that woman deserves better, you know? And deep down, I respect her.” How deep down is open for question, given tracks such as “Lauren in a Bathing Suit” and “Fleshlight,” both of which muse sexual congress in euphemisms that are clever, if eyebrow-raising. The record sounds solid, with the band’s signature punk posture and surprisingly melodic chants and verses. It’s a mark of personal pride for Haskins that Black Flag’s Greg Ginn helped record Don’t Shred on Me. Haskins said he’s ready for Warped. The band won’t find out when it plays until Friday morning. “Darlin’, I gotta move like a rock ’n’ roll cheetah. Any time you pay to come see me, I’m gonna give you all I got,” Haskins said. “I don’t mean that as a figure of speech; I have arthritis in my knees and my wrists and I have to take notso-legal pills to do it, but I give everything I got. There will probably be some blood at the Warped show. I treat every single show like it’s the last show we’ll ever play.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. OPENING FRIDAY

Bad Teacher A foul-mouthed teacher (Cameron Diaz) ill-suited to her job begins plotting to secure her meal ticket. With Justin Timberlake, Lucy Punch and Jason Segel. Written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (Year One). Rated R, 89 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Buck This documentary follows Buck Brannaman, the horseman who inspired the novel and film The Horse Whisperer. Rated PG, 88 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — LAT Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop (###) This fast-moving documentary picks up and stays focused on Conan O’Brien soon after his ignominious departure from NBC. Instead of moping, and having been barred from TV or Internet appearances, he gathers his crew to help him prepare for, rehearse and then perform his crosscountry tour. Director Rodman

Flender only shows O’Brien as being gracious, constantly funny, intelligent and almost too energetic to believe. Entertaining and exhausting. Not rated, 89 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen Kaboom (##) The latest comedy from indie veteran Gregg Araki is a bizarre blend of fantasy and reality revolving around the social misadventures of a gay college student (Thomas Dekker) who has trouble making sense of his relationships and strange nightmares. Araki tells his sex-fueled story with the sort of visual flair that characterized his earlier works. But the film is more pretentious than audacious as it stumbles toward a meaningless finale. Not rated, 86 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson

NOW PLAYING Green Lantern A cocky test pilot (Ryan Reynolds) imbued with super powers by a magical ring battles an intergalactic enemy. With Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong and Angela Bassett. Directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale). In 3-D. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — LAT Mr. Popper’s Penguins (##) Jim Carrey’s 20-year career comes full circle with this slapstick comedy: He’s back playing with the animals. Popper (Carrey) is a workaholic executive who’s forced to deal with a penguin that arrives as a gift from his late father, who was an explorer, while juggling his family and fledgling career. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — T.J.

‘Cars’ franchise loses what charm it had with sequel

it were; Larry the Cable Guy, who voices the character, even gets top billing over Wilson. But a little of the comedian’s twangy shtick goes a long way — for the audience, and for McQueen, who gets annoyed with Mater’s boorish behavior in all these refined settings. But wait, there’s more. Michael Caine provides the voice of the elegant English sports car, superspy Finn McMissile, whose rookie sidekick, Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer), run into Mater, who has tagged along with McQueen on this globe-trotting journey, and mistakenly believe he’s the American undercover operative they’re supposed to meet during their latest mission. With all these new characters and various narrative strands competing for our attention, there’s not much room for fun. Cars 2 is one thing a familyfriendly summer blockbuster should never be: boring.

ixar’s track record has been close to impeccable for turning out intelligent, emotionally rich, beautifully detailed animated films, with plenty of humor and heart to appeal to movie lovers of all ages. But the weak link in the chain, at least from a narrative standpoint, has always been 2006’s Cars, with its twodimensional talking autos and hokey, borrowed tale of smalltown life. Sure, it was bright and zippy, which was enough to appeal to the little ones, and it became a merchandising juggernaut. So sure, why not make a sequel? Trouble is, Cars 2 is such a mess, it makes the original look like it ought to rank among Pixar’s masterpieces by comparison. attempt at catering to the everexpanding global moviegoing audience by having the hero of the original Cars, Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), compete in an international grand prix through Japan, France, Italy and Britain. The sponsor is a Richard Branson-type Range Rover-looking vehicle (Eddie Izzard); McQueen’s main rival is an arrogant Italian Formula 1 racecar (John Turturro). At the same time, Cars 2 panders to middle America by placing Mater, the rusty, awshucks tow truck, front and center. McQueen is flashier but this is Mater’s time to shine, as
