Director
The Board of Trustees of Lees-McRae College announced the appointment, effective June 1, 2010, of Barry M. Buxton as president of Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina. Dr. Buxton officially became the fifteenth president in the 110-year history of the four-year liberal arts college during the inauguration ceremony on October 2, 2010. Before coming to Lees-McRae College, Buxton most recently served as Vice President for Special Projects at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he was responsible for major gift solicitation, leadership development, and foundation relations. He also served as executive liaison to the Savannah, Atlanta, and European Boards of Visitors. A native of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, Dr. Buxton has a long history of involvement with non-profit organizations in Appalachia. During the decade of the 1980s, he served as Executive Director of the sixteen-member Appalachian Consortium. In this capacity, he worked with faculty on research projects, scholarly conferences, and publications related to Appalachia. In 1987, he received a distinguished service award from the Blue Ridge Parkway in recognition of the historic studies he conducted of Mabry Mill, Moses H. Cone Estate, Davey Farm, and Brinegar Cabin. Dr. Buxton has served as president of science and history museums in North Carolina, Texas, and Georgia. In Houston, he worked with former President and First Lady George and Barbara Bush and the Harris County Medical Society to establish the Museum of Health and Medical Science. He was vice president of the North Carolina Grass Roots Science Museums and a co-founder of the Houston Museum District Association. An award-winning author who has written and edited over a dozen books, his centennial history of Blowing Rock, A Village Tapestry, was recognized as the best local history book in North Carolina in 1989. In a diverse career spanning 35 years, he has been a teacher, researcher, publisher, editor, and community leader with extensive international experience. He has served as a consultant to such diverse organizations as the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Tennessee State Board of Regents, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Texas A&M University. Dr. Buxton is a past member of the North Carolina Humanities Council and the Nebraska Humanities Council. Buxton holds two degrees from Appalachian State University, where he received his teacher certification and was an E.F. Lovill Fellow. His Ph.D. is from the University of Nebraska, and his dissertation was titled “Job Satisfaction of College and University Presidents.” Throughout his career, Dr. Buxton has received high marks for rolling up his sleeves and getting involved in community projects. He was the first non-hospitality professional to be chosen to serve as Chairman of Savannah’s powerful Convention and Visitors Bureau. He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce executive committee and served on the boards of Bethesda Home for Boys, YMCA, the Lucas Theatre, Historic Savannah Foundation, and the Savannah Economic Development Authority. In North Carolina, he was statewide Chairman of Project Assist (a smoking cessation initiative), and a board member of United Way and the Asheville Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Buxton is married to artist Deborah Keyes Buxton and they have two sons: Loren, a technology executive in Nebraska, and Peter, who lives in New York City and works in television and commercial production. Dr. Buxton’s avocational interests include tennis, bicycling, and landscape architecture.

Athletics
Craig McPhail is in his third year as Director of Athletics at Lees-McRae College. McPhail oversees all day-to-day operations of the Lees-McRae athletic department and the 18 sports the college sponsors. In his first year the athletic teams had great success, with the men’s soccer program competing for the national championship, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s tennis and men’s track and field reaching the NCAA Division II tournaments. The Bobcats’ success on the field rivaled what they did in the classroom as 159 student-athletes made the Presidential Honor Roll for athletics, the second-most in Conference Carolinas. Several key areas were improved in his first year as the department received a full-time NCAA Director of Compliance, added banners to the gym documenting the department’s NCAA success, upholstery of weight room equipment complete with signage and banners, window decals, painting of the front entryway and asphalt seal coating. Renovated softball facilities, outdoor tennis complex, press box, reintroduction of the Hall of Fame and a Bobcat Club have also each been a part of his short time at the helm. McPhail previously served as the assistant athletic director at Lees-McRae, working with community service projects, managing the awards banquets, handling the publicity and marketing of the athletic department and monitoring the overall experience of the studentathletes at Lees-McRae. He has served on several committees within the College for retention, judicial review, graduation and community service. He has also represented the College as a member of CoSIDA, United States Cross Country/Track Coaches Association, USA Track and Field, Conference Carolinas chair for both cross country and track and field and recently finished his appointment as chair of the NCAA Division II Cross Country/Track and Field committee. As the head men’s and women’s cross country coach for 11 years, his teams had great success in and out of the classroom with 13 conference championships in men’s and women’s cross country, as well as track and field, a program whose re-instatement he was an integral part of. He has coached 73 all-Conference student-athletes, 31 of those gaining all-Region honors, while watching them regularly receive Academic AllAmerica honors over the past decade. McPhail’s peers have voted him Conference Coach of the Year 11 times, and he has also garnered Regional Coach of the Year three times. Additionally, he has guided 38 Lees-McRae student-athletes to NCAA Division II National Championships. McPhail’s time in the community has been well served with numerous organizations, including the local Young Life organization, the Special Olympics torch run, the Banner Elk Christian Fellowship Church, as well as a Lees-McRae Mountain Day athletic coordinator, Wooly Worm Road Race organizer, Turkey Trot organizer, and as a caddy at Diamond Creek Golf Club. He graduated from Winthrop University with a degree in mass communications (journalism) and a minor in interpersonal speech. McPhail also has a Master’s degree in sport management from Georgia Southern University. McPhail is married to the former Jill Clawson. They are the proud parents of 10-month old son Elijah Boggs McPhail.

Lee Squires Head Men’s Soccer Coach Lees-McRae College, 2011 Lee Squires is in his first season as the head men’s soccer coach at Lees-McRae College. Squires, a May 2011 graduate of Lees-McRae, led the Bobcats to the program’s fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance last season, garnering Conference Carolinas Player of the Year honors for the second time in his career. A native of Sheffield, England, Squires enjoyed a tremendous career at Lees-McRae, concluding his tenure as the program’s all-time leader in points (149) and goals (67). In his career with the Bobcats, Squires posted a pair of 20-goal seasons while garnering All-America honors on three occasions. The two-time conference player of the year tallied at least 10 goals in three of his four seasons with the Bobcats, netting 22 matchwinners and recording 15 assists, concluding his playing career as one of the top players in program history.

Jim Hart is in his first season as the assistant men’s soccer coach at Lees-McRae. Hart served on the Lees-McRae coaching staff this past fall, helping the Bobcats capture the program’s fourth straight Conference Carolinas regular season championship, and third consecutive conference tournament title. The Bobcats posted a 13-5-3 record, including a 7-1-1 mark in league play, while making the program’s fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. “Jim brings a skill set to our team and campus to where he is invaluable to us,” Director of Athletics Craig McPhail said. “His experience and knowledge will help guide our young men through this journey of intercollegiate athletics and I am thrilled to have him be a part of our athletic department.” Hart is married to Caroline Hart, Vice-President of Institutional Advancement for Lees-McRae. He is the father of seven-year
Adam Burden Student Assistant Coach Adam Burden is in his second year as a student assistant coach with the Lees-McRae men’s soccer program. Burden assists with all aspects of the program, while also serving as the goalkeeper coach. Burden appeared in three matches for the Bobcats during the 2009 season, recording one goal on one shot. The Norwich, England native was then forced to the sidelines by persistent injury problems, and has served on the coaching staff in various capacities for the last two seasons. Burden is currently in his senior year at LMC, majoring in sports science with an anticipated graduation date of December 2011.

2011 Bobcat Men’s Soccer
Merritt Yackey Assistant Athletic Director External Operations Merritt Yackey is in his second season as the assistant athletic director for external operations at Lees-McRae. Yackey assists with fundraising efforts and special projects within the Bobcat athletic department and its 17 intercollegiate sports. Yackey is also in his second year as the Bobcats’ head softball coach, taking the reins of a program that finished the 2009 season with a 23-19 overall record, which marked the school’s first winning campaign in 10 years. In his first season with the Bobcats, Yackey led the program to a 12-32 record and a 5-13 mark in Conference Carolinas play. He took the Bobcats to new heights in 2010, leading Lees-McRae to a 26-27 overall record and the program’s first-ever winning season in conference play with a 10-8 mark against league opponents. For his efforts, Yackey was named the Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year, as the Bobcats placed four on the all-conference teams. Yackey brings over 25 years of experience in higher education. He was Director of Development/Special Giving at Albion College from 1988-1993, Director of Development at Converse College from 1995-1996, Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving at Catawba College from 1997-2000, Special Assistant to the President/Campaign Director at Limestone College from 2000-2002, Vice President for Development at Mansfield University from 2002-2004 and Vice President for Advancement at Lees-McRae College from 2004-2007. Yackey also served as the head softball coach at local Avery High School from 2007-2009.
Assistant Athletic Director/Compliance Anderson University (S.C.), 2006 Jeff Watson is in his third year as the Director of Compliance, and first as an assistant athletic director for the Lees-McRae athletic department. During the 2009-2010 school year, Watson represented Lees-McRae and Conference Carolinas in Anaheim, Calif. as the recipient of the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association/NCAA Division II Grant. Watson, a graduate of Anderson University, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and a minor in public relations. At Anderson, Watson was a member of the men’s track and field team and named the team’s MVP in 2003. During his career, he finished in the top ten of every meet in which he competed. He also set school records in the shot-put and discus.
Whitney Noble Sports Information Director University of Tampa, 2008 Whitney Noble is in his second year as the Sports Information Director in the Lees-McRae athletic department. Noble is responsible for all sports information needs of Lees-McRae’s 18 intercollegiate sports. Noble joins the Bobcats from nearby Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn., where he served as the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations for two years. While at Tusculum, Noble served as the primary contact for the Pioneer men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s basketball, softball, cross country, and men’s and women’s tennis programs. A native of Boxborough, Mass., Noble completed his Bachelor’s of Science degree in sport management from the University of Tampa in May 2008. Noble worked in the Spartans’ sports information office as a student assistant from 2004-07, before being named to the assistant director post prior to the 2007-08 academic year. During his undergraduate years at Tampa, Noble covered 13 of UT’s 16 athletic teams in various capacities, serving as the primary contact for men’s soccer in 2006 and 2007, as well as baseball in 2008. While at Tampa, he helped write and design several media guides for soccer, baseball, basketball, and volleyball, as well as being the primary designer of the 2008 baseball media guide. The 2006 Tampa Men’s Soccer media guide, which he helped produce, was selected third in the nation (Division B) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Noble brings a tremendous amount of championship experience with him, having been an integral part of the sports information staff at a number of NCAA Tournament events throughout his career, including serving as the primary statistician and media contact for the 2008 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Men’s Soccer Tournament, which was hosted by Tusculum. In 2007-08, he also served on the statistics staff for the NCAA Division III Soccer National Championship in Orlando, Fla. and the NCAA II South Regional Baseball Tournament, hosted by Tampa. In 2007, he also worked with ESPN with the Arena Football Playoffs in Tampa.
Phillip Greene Community Relations Manager Milligan College, 2002 Phillip Greene is in his second season as the Community Relations Manager for the Lees-McRae Athletic Department. Greene spent the previous year as the sports editor and photographer for The Avery Post, a local newspaper in Newland, N.C., and as a youth minister at Elk Park Christain Church in Elk Park, N.C. Greene wears multiple hats for the Lees-McRae Athletic department including: managing the department’s travel schedule, game day set up, community events during athletic contests and assisting the sports information director with feature stories, photos, public relations and Lees-McRae Honors Night. Greene is a graduate of Milligan College where he majored in communications with a minor in youth ministry.

Lees-McRae Athletics: Success Elevated
2011 Bobcat Men’s Soccer The Lees-McRae men’s soccer program opens a new era under first-year head coach Lee Squires, entering the 2011 campaign tabbed second in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll after capturing the school’s fourth consecutive league crown a season ago. With seven returners and a talented recruiting class at his disposal, Squires takes the reins of a program that advanced to the national championship match just two seasons ago. Lees-McRae put together a solid campaign in 2010, posting a 13-53 overall record while capturing the program’s fourth straight conference title with a 7-1-1 mark against league opponents. The Bobcats went on to win the conference tournament with three Senior Luke Duffy consecutive shutouts 2010 Daktronics all-Southeast Region against Queens, Pfeiffer and Coker before punching the program’s fourth straight ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Several Bobcats garnered individual recognition last season, including Squires, who became the program’s first-ever three-time All-American in his senior campaign. Squires and Luke Duffy (Wakefield, England) were named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II all-Southeast Region First team, while David Palmer (South Shields, England), Justin Jones (Jamestown, N.C.), and Thomas Rusling (Sheffield, England) each earned a spot on the second unit. The Bobcats placed seven on the all-conference team, including Squires, who was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year for the second time in his career. FORWARDS James Galvani (High Wycombe, England) returns for his sophomore season to anchor the Bobcat attack, coming off an impressive rookie campaign, when he posted 11 goals, six assists, and 28 points, all of which ranked him among the top five on the team. The 6-3, 175-pound forward will be joined in the attacking third by a trio of promising newcomers, as well as one of last season’s seven allconference selections. Scott Alford (Hillsborough, N.C.), Nick Welsh (Boone, N.C.), and Steven Pulcifer (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) round out the attacking options for the Bobcats this season, as each bring a unique style of play to give Squires plenty of alternatives in the offensive third. Alford comes to Lees-McRae from Northern Durham High School in Durham, N.C., where he was a two-time all-conference selection and a three-time scholar athlete honoree in both soccer and tennis. Welsh joins the Bobcat family from nearby Watauga High Sophomore James Galvani School in Boone, N.C., 2010 all-Conference Carolinas where he recorded 10 goals and 15 assists in his career. The 5-11, 150-pound forward was also a member of the Patton Invitational championship team this past fall at Watauga. Pulcifer comes to LMC from Anderson County High School in Lawrenceburg, Ky., where he was a fourtime academic all-state selection and the conference MVP as a senior. The 5-9, 160-pound forward tallied 18 goals and 16 assists during his senior campaign, and will likely also feature in the midfield corps for the Bobcats. MIDFIELDERS Palmer returns to anchor the Bobcat midfield, coming off perhaps the best season of his career, in which he tallied a personal-best nine goals and 22 points to rank third on the team in both categories. The South Shields, England native will be joined in the middle of the park by a one returner and a solid group of gifted newcomers, including a former reserve star in England. Chris DeSanto (Greensboro, N.C.) returns for his sophomore season after seeing limited action in his rookie campaign with the Bobcats, appearing in two matches last fall. The 5-7, 140-pound midfielder will be joined by freshmen Kevin Osorio (Marietta, Ga.), James Smith (Eastbourne, England), Preston Shahdad (Charlotte, N.C.), Andrew Shoemaker (Cary, N.C.), Trey Cox (Simpsonville, S.C.), Ryan Gillespie (Holly Springs, N.C.) as the Bobcats work to rebuild an area of strength from the last four seasons. Osorio joins the Bobcats from Wheeler High School in Marietta, Ga., where he was a three-time offensive player of the year and played club soccer for NASA 11 Elite. Smith comes to LMC after appearing in 30 reserve matches for English League Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion last season. Shahdad enters his freshman season with the Bobcats after a successful prep career at South Meck High School in Charlotte, N.C., where he recorded 13 goals

Shoemaker joins the Bobcat family from Athens Drive High School in Raleigh, N.C., where he helped his team win the state championship and advance to the quarterfinals of the regional tournament last season. Cox comes to LMC from Greenville Senior High Academy in Greenville, S.C., where he garnered all-region recognition as Senior David Palmer a senior and played club 2010 all-Conference Carolinas First team soccer for Carolina Elite Soccer Academy. Gillespie rounds out the midfield corps for the Bobcats, entering his freshman season at LMC following a successful prep career at Holly Springs High School in Holly Springs, N.C., where he was a two-time recipient of the Golden Hawk Award and led the team with 11 goals as a senior. DEFENDERS Seniors Luke Duffy (Wakefield, England) and Luke Staats (Almere, Netherlands) return to lead the Bobcat backline, which has proved to be perhaps the program’s biggest strength over the past several seasons. Duffy takes the pitch for his final campaign with the Bobcats after leading the program to its fourth consecutive Conference Carolinas Tournament title last season, playing an integral role on a backline which posted six shutouts and held opponents to 21 goals in 21 matches. Staats enjoyed perhaps the best season of his career in 2010, earning allconference honors for the first time while appearing in 15 matches and recording one assist. Sophomore Scott Hudgins (Fort Myers, Fla.) rounds out the returning defensive core for the Bobcats after making one appearance in his rookie campaign. The Bobcats welcome a pair of seasoned transfers and two incoming freshmen into the fold this fall, as juniors John Williams (Rutherfordton, N.C.) and Gary Bajkowsky (Dunedin, Fla.) join LMC from nearby Mars Hill College. Williams appeared in 34 matches over his two-year tenure at Mars Hill, making 16 starts and recording 19 shots. Bajkowsky appeared in 38 matches for the Lions in Senior Luke Staats his two seasons at MHC, 2010 all-Conference Carolinas featuring among the starting 11 in each of those contests while making 11 attempts at goal. Freshmen Tyler Nowin (Fayetteville, Tenn.) and TC Stephens (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) round out the defensive corps for the Bobcats, and are expected to compete for playing time as well as a possible spot in the starting 11. Nowin joins the Bobcats from Westminster Christian Academy in Huntsville, Ala., where he played club soccer for Huntsville Futbol Club and was an integral part of two Region III Premier League championship teams. Stephens comes to LMC from FuquayVarina High School, where he garnered all-conference and all-region recognition, and finished last season ranked second on the team in goals (16). GOALKEEPERS Senior Tyler Gibson (Gastonia, N.C.) and sophomore Thomas Rusling (Sheffield, England) return to anchor the Bobcats between the pipes, and are expected to engage in a tense competition for the starting nod. Gibson has seen limited action in his career with the Bobcats, appearing in six matches last season after transferring from Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, S.C. Rusling put together a solid rookie season with the Bobcats last fall, posting a goals against average of 0.93 and keeping four clean sheets to earn a spot on the Daktronics NCAA Division II all-Southeast Region Second team. Freshman Luis Rendon (Miami, Fla.) rounds out the goalkeeping options for Coach Squires, joining the Bobcats from Miami Coral Park High School where he was a two-time all-county selection. OUTLOOK With one of the conference’s most seasoned corps of veterans and an influx of gifted newcomers, the Bobcats hope to continue the program’s championship tradition of the last four years. Coach Squires’ side faces a demanding schedule, opening the season against nationally-ranked foes Montevallo and Flagler in an immediate test of the reloading process. The Bobcats are expected to contend for their fifth consecutive conference title, ranking second in the league’s preseason poll.

2010 Season Review
The Lees-McRae men’s soccer program entered the 2010 under new leadership after putting together perhaps the best season in school history in 2009, advancing to the NCAA Division II national championship match before falling at the hands of Fort Lewis by a score of 1-0. Undaunted, the Bobcats opened the season in much the same fashion as they had become accustomed to, rebounding from a pair of early defeats to post an 8-2-2 record through their first 12 matches. After a heart-wrenching 2-1 extra-time defeat at North Georgia on Oct. 14, the Bobcats answered with an impressive 2-1 victory over then-17th-ranked Mars Hill before registering a resounding 7-1 victory over St. Andrews in Conference Carolinas play. The Bobcats then traveled to Erskine, walking out onto the Due West, S.C. pitch with a chance to clinch their fourth straight conference crown. Their celebration would have to wait, as the Flying Fleet announced their arrival among the league’s elite with a 2-0 victory to remain just one point behind the conference-leading Bobcats. Lees-McRae fulfilled its destiny four days later, edging Coker by a 2-1 margin on senior day to capture the program’s sixth league title and clinch the top seed in the conference tournament. Three days later, the Bobcats welcomed Queens to Tate Field in the quarterfinal round and left little doubt to the result early on, scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes en route to a comfortable 3-0 victory. The Bobcats and Pfeiffer were forced to contend with Mother Nature in the Lee Squires semifinal round, as the teams were greeted at Tate Field by a driving snow storm 2010 Daktronics All-America Honorable Mention that pushed the match to the following afternoon at Avery High School in Newland, N.C. Despite the setback and thanks to a heroic effort by the team and various members of the athletic staff to make the field playable, the teams took the pitch and battled to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes, forcing extra time. When extra time could not produce a result, it was time for five men from each side to walk to the spot with a chance at history. The Bobcats proved to be the favored team on the day, as freshman goalkeeper Thomas Rusling (Sheffield, England) denied the Falcons’ final two attempts to send LMC into the final against Coker. The Bobcats carried the momentum into the final, shutting out Coker by a score of 2-0 to capture the program’s sixth conference tournament title, including the third in the last four years. Lees-McRae was then forced to wait until later that night to learn if its season would continue into the NCAA tournament. The Bobcats received the news they were hoping for, drawing perennial regional contender and 19th-ranked Clayton State in the opening round. Lees-McRae and Clayton would do battle three days later in Morrow, Ga., with the Lakers gaining the upper hand less than seven minutes into the match before doubling the advantage just before the interval. Refusing to back down, the Bobcats answered early in the second half when James Galvani (High Wycombe, England) took a cross from Justin Jones (Jamestown, N.C.), and buried it in the back of the net in the 50th minute to pull LMC within one. The Bobcats battled until the end, nearly converting numerous chances down the stretch but were unable to find an equalizer, as their season came to a heartbreaking close with a narrow 2-1 defeat. The Bobcats once again enjoyed a tremendous award season in 2010, placing seven on the all-Conference Carolinas team, including senior Lee Squires (Sheffield, England), who was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year for the second time in his career. Juniors Luke Duffy (Wakefield, England) and David Palmer Luke Duffy (Gateshead, England), as well as sophomore Luke Perry (Cheshire, England), joined 2010 all-Conference Carolinas First Team Squires on the first team, while Galvani, Luke Staats (Almere, Holland), and Sam Kennedy (The East End, London, England) each earned a spot on the second team. Squires and Duffy also each earned a spot on the Daktronics NCAA Division II all-Southeast Region First Team, pacing five all-region selections for the Bobcats, as Squires also earned NSCAA/Performance Subaru all-Southeast Region First Team and Daktronics All-America honors. Palmer, Duffy, and Galvani were all received all-region honors from the NSCAA, while Palmer, Jones, and Rusling joined Duffy and Squires on the Daktronics all-Southeast Region teams.

2011 Bobcat Men’s Soccer
Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athletic conference made up of 11 teams from North Carolina and South Carolina. These institutions consist of: Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Coker College, Converse College, Erskine College, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, Mount Olive College, Pfeiffer University, Queens University of Charlotte, and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. For the upcoming 2011-12 academic year King College (Bristol, TN) and North Greenville University (Tigerville, SC) will join as full Conference Carolinas league members. The league supports eighteen season-ending conference championship tournaments with nine women's and nine men's sports. Sports that are sponsored with NCAA automatic qualifications include: Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Women's Tennis, Men's Tennis, Men's Golf, Women's Soccer, Women's Cross Country, Men's Cross Country, and Women's Volleyball. NCAA regional and national selection opportunities in Men's Soccer, Men's Lacrosse, Women's Lacrosse, Men's Outdoor Track & Field, Women's Outdoor Track & Field, Women's Golf and Men's Volleyball are also available based on end of year regional rankings and/or season results.
History Conference Carolinas has a rich tradition in roots that date back to its early initial inception on December 6th, 1930. The conference was formed then as an athletic association "for the greater advantage of the small colleges in North Carolina". The official name given back then was the North State Intercollegiate Conference but known informally as the Old North State Conference. The birthplace was the Washington Duke Hotel in Durham, NC and the seven charter members were Appalachian, Atlantic Christian (now Barton College), Catawba, Guilford, Elon, High Point, and Lenoir-Rhyne. The conference followed a policy of expansion for a period of time. Western Carolina became a member in 1933, East Carolina in 1947, Pfeiffer in 1960, Newberry in 1961, and Presbyterian in 1964, followed closely by Mars Hill. With the acceptance of the first member from South Carolina in Newberry College, a name change became necessary. Thus on May 20, 1961 the official name of the conference was changed to the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) but commonly known less formerly as the Carolinas Conference. East Carolina resigned in 1962 to join the Southern Conference and Appalachian and Western Carolina followed. Football sponsorship in the Carolinas Conference was dropped in 1973 when Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry, Presbyterian, and Mars Hill joined the South Atlantic Conference. Pembroke State University became a first-time member in 1976 followed by Wingate College in 1979, and Lenoir-Rhyne rejoined in 1984. While Guilford College withdrew in 1988, St. Andrews and Mount Olive were added that same year. The 1989-90 academic year started a new era as Catawba, Elon, Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate all withdrew to compete in the first year that the South Atlantic Conference would provide championships in all sports, not just football. The Carolinas Conference then added Belmont Abbey in 1989, Coker College in 1991, and Lees-McRae in 1993. The 1993-94 academic year brought a change to the conference national affiliation. The conference entered dual membership into both the NAIA DI and NCAA DII affiliation. The 1995-96 year brought dramatic change to the conference. First, full membership into NCAA Division II was acquired and NAIA affiliation dropped. Thus, this was the first official year of full competition and championship play for the conference in NCAA DII status. Secondly, this was also the same year that Erskine, Longwood, & Queens were accepted as full members of the conference. With Longwood becoming the first Virginia member, another name change occurred and the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (known more universally as the ‘CVAC') was born. Following the 1997 academic year High Point resigned to join the NCAA DI ranks while in 1998 Limestone soon joined and were quickly followed by Anderson in 1999. In 2003, Longwood University left the conference to explore possibilities in NCAA Division I. Then in 2005 the CVAC added Converse College as an affiliate member before becoming a full member the following year. With the lone Virginia school in Longwood leaving, the league decided to go back to their roots and change their name to Conference Carolinas in 2007 and currently still remain one of the elite NCAA DII conferences in the nation. Many institutions have been members of the league during its rich history including Anderson, Appalachian, Atlantic Christian (now Barton College), Belmont Abbey, Catawba, Coker, Converse, East Carolina, Erskine, Guilford, Elon, High Point, Lees-McRae, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, Longwood, Mars Hill, Mount Olive, Newberry, Pembroke State, Pfeiffer, Presbyterian, Queens, St. Andrews, Western Carolina and Wingate. Barton is the only remaining charter member followed in longevity by Pfeiffer's membership in 1960 and then Mount Olive's and St. Andrews both joining in 1988.

Lees-McRae Athletics: Success Elevated
College History “Banner’s Elk,” as the village was once called, is said to have been settled around 1850. By the end of the century, the Presbyterian Church was becoming established in the area and in the summer of 1895 Concord Presbytery sent a young student from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia to organize a church at Banner Elk. In 1897, newly ordained, the Reverend Edgar Tufts returned as pastor of the church and remained to serve the community until his death in 1923. In the winter of 1899, concerned with the limited offering of the district school which was supplemented only by summer school work conducted by the church, Mr. Tufts took some of the young people of the neighborhood into his study for further instruction. This small group, called the Class of 1900, marks the beginning of Lees-McRae College. Mr. Tufts saw, however, that this effort was not enough and that there was a need for a boarding school, especially for the girls of the mountain region. A small amount of money was raised at a prayer meeting and the promise of lumber and labor made possible the opening in 1900 of a frame dormitory for fourteen girls and one teacher. One of the summer school teachers was Elizabeth A. McRae, originally of South Carolina, who had been sent to Banner Elk by Fayetteville Presbytery. Knowing the devoted character of her work, Mr. Tufts, named the institute for her. A few years later, after a boys' department had been opened at Plumtree, he added the name of Mrs. McRae’s friend, Mrs. S.P. Lees of Kentucky and New York, who had been a generous benefactor. The schools were chartered by the state in 1907 as the Lees-McRae Institute. In 1927 Lees-McRae became coeducational when the boys unit was moved to Banner Elk after the buildings at Plumtree had been destroyed by fire. Lees-McRae Institute became Lees-McRae College in 1931, gradually eliminating the high school department to form an accredited, coeducational junior college. In 1987 the Board of Trustees of Lees-McRae College voted to seek senior college status. In June of 1990 the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted Lees-McRae status as a senior (four-year) college. Over a hundred years after its founding, Lees-McRae College continues in the vision of the Rev. Tufts meeting the educational needs of the Southern Appalachian region and beyond. The college continues to fulfill its motto, in the mountains, of the mountains, and for the mountains while extending its ministry of education and service to diverse populations. Today, Lees-McRae is a small, private, four-year, coeducational liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. with over 900 students from more than 20 states and countries. Lees-McRae offers 22 outcomesbased, learner-focused major programs of study and several minor programs of study, providing a quality, valuesbased education in an ecumenical environment, inspiring and enabling individuals to contribute to a changing society with integrity and civic responsibility. Through a curriculum rooted in a liberal arts core to educate the mind, body and spirit, combined with an emphasis on leadership and service, graduates obtain knowledge, skills, and a holistic understanding of themselves and the world.
