Toothache is one of the common types of dental problems especially for children. We know that children love eating sweets and sometimes they forgot to brush their teeth after eating this is usually causes cavity.


Cavities are cause by the oral bacteria usually known as the streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli. These oral bacteria’s are found around the teeth and they commonly called as plaque. These bacteria damage the tooth putting a hole on either at the top or side of our tooth and later on cause’s toothache, tooth loss and infection.



Used topical fluoride to encourage re-mineralization of the tooth and is commonly used for small tooth lesions. For the larger lesions, dental treatment is advice to stop the progression of cavity. Dentists perform certain dental procedure to preserve the tooth and prevent further tooth destruction. Others perform aggressive treatment to tooth lesions like filling to cover the cavity but the damage tooth is still vulnerable for further decay. Still early treatment of cavity is the best way prevent the further appearance of the cavity and aside from that it is less expensive. Cosmetic dentists perform certain procedures to cure cavity they cover the cavity using cosmetics that are usually made of porcelain, composite resin and gold.


Tips on how to prevent cavities Oral hygiene- proper brushing and flossing can help to prevent or remove the formation of plaque that causes cavities. It is important to brush and floss teeth at least 2-3 times a day to protect the teeth from the oral bacteria that builds on teeth when the oral hygiene is poor. Mouth wash and other adjunct such as water picks and inter-dental brushes can also help to promote oral hygiene and prevent the bacteria from building around the teeth.


Frequent dental check up or professional hygiene along with the oral hygiene are the things that one must consider for preventing the appearance of cavities. Professional hygiene includes regular dental examination and cleanings.


Dietary modification- sugar and other carbohydrates intake are usually the cause of cavity because it can demineralize the enamel, dentin and cementum. Minimizing snacking can also help to prevent the appearance of the acid-creating bacteria in the mouth; foods like candies and other sweets are best eaten as a part of a meal. Also eating food that has a milk or calcium content can help in counter tooth decay and as well as chewing gums that has xylytol content is best eaten after the consumption of food.


Dental sealant- is also a means of preventing tooth decay. Dental sealant covers the tooth and prevents the food from being trapped in between the teeth. This deprives the oral bacteria from building-up around the tooth.


These are the common ways that one must follow to prevent further complications due tooth decay. It is important to promote proper oral and professional hygiene to preserve the beauty of our teeth.
