Costco site work slated in 2024
          March 31, 2025.
The proposed Lloydminster Costco warehouse is now slated to be completed by Aug. 31, 2025, with site grading and other activities to start in late May 2024, according to an evolving online schedule.
Site drawings show an approximately 160,000 sq. ft. warehouse project with a liquor pod and a fuel facility officially located at 75 Ave and 20 Street, north of the ACTO substation on 12 Street.
Briza Zacharias has committed to the University of Minnesota Crookston to obtain a science degree in Sport Management and will be playing for the school’s Golden Eagles Softball team.
Connor Daschuk will be going to Brock University for the Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice program and hopes to get into a career in law. Daschuk will also be on the Brock University Swim Team.
Liam Gilby will be attending the University of Victoria in the fall for Engineering and will be rowing for the UVic
Row Team, and Raiders’ safety, Tyler Gerwing, will further his football career with the Edmonton Wildcats football team while apprenticing in auto body with dreams of becoming a custom fabricator to build trucks.

Gilby, 18, explained he is super excited about the opportunities ahead, especially considering he’s only been rowing for just over a year.
“I started about a year and a couple of months ago. I really loved it; I trained all winter and it

just clicked from there,” he said.
“At Victoria, they prioritize the double and the four for the lightweight team. I’m going to be on the light-weight team out there, so hopefully, by the middle of my first year and the start of my second year, I should be on the lightweight four and having a good time out there.”
Gilby gives credit to local coaches Shelby Lane and Michelle Lopez for helping him see his potential and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Daschuk, also 18, started swimming with the Lloydminster Rebels at age 10 and most recently has been training with the Lloydminster Riptides winter club.
“My specialty in the pool is sprinting, specifically 50 metres of free. That’s my favourite event, it always has been, ever since I started I got pretty good at it right away,” he said, adding he also competes in 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

In 2019, plans called for the developer to be responsible for mass grading the site; however, we understand Costco will now be responsible for mass grading the site, including placing fills up to about 4 metres thick.
Aside from mass grading, the preliminary schedule includes utilities and site concrete completion in 2024 along with some initial asphalt paving and landscaping in advance of warehouse construction to start on
The Costco project site is zoned C4 as a commercial shopping centre district and covers a 19.57-acre site at Musgrave Agencies’ 140-acre Lakeview subdivision to be developed over a multi-year period.
A lot of site fill will be required for grading according to a new report sent last month from the environmental services company, Kleinfelder to the director of real estate development at Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd.

“In 2019, plans called for the developer to be responsible for mass grading the site; however, we understand Costco will now be responsible for mass grading the site, including placing fills up to about 4 metres thick,” stated the report.

            Lloyd talent shines at provincials
There’s nothing in the water to account for a record seven Lloydminster music students winning their classes at the Saskatchewan Music Festival Provincials.
The results from the provincial finals and the provincial level of the Canada West Excellence competition, held in Regina June 1-4, boiled down to raw talent, says Kerry Taylor, president of the Kiwanis Lloydminster and District Music Festival.

“I am absolutely thrilled that we had such a great showing down there. Our showing has been improving year after year and this year was an outstanding year,” said Taylor.
“We’ve had other years where we’ve had one provincial winner, maybe two.”
The seven winning students and 34 competitors in all from Lloydminster had to score 88 out of 100 at the Kiwanis event, held in Lloyd this spring to qualify for the provincials.
“In my opinion, it’s a reflection of the quality of the teachers in this town,” said Taylor.
The top student was Ruby Hickman, taught by Kathryn Edwards at Center Stage Studios.
Hickman won three classes including first
place and a $200 scholarship in the Canada West Excellence Musical Theatre (13 years & under).

The youngster will be competing at Canada West in Edmonton in July.
“She is a very talented student. She works very hard and is just very enthusiastic,” said Edwards. “It really has paid off and she’s done very well this year.”
Hickman also won her Musical Theatre Ballad Classic/Modern class (12 and under) and a $100 scholarship.
She finished on top in the Musical Theatre Uptempo Contemporary class (12 and under) and earned another $100 scholarship.

Kitscoty RCMP lay charges for BNE
On June 8 at 4:31 a.m. Kitscoty RCMP received a report of a residential break and enter in progress at a residence on Range Road 13 near Marwayne.

RCMP were able to receive live up to date reports from the complainant who was observing the suspects on the homes security cameras. Upon arrival, the suspects had left the residence.
Officers with the help of a Police dog were successful in searching and locating the two suspects in a nearby rural area.
As a result of the investigation, RCMP have charged 27-yearold Onion Lake resident, Ronald Albert Jimmy, with:
          - Breaking and entering
          - Possession of break in tools
          - Possession of property obtained by crime
Jimmy was taken before a justice of the peace and was released. He has since failed to appear in court and has a warrant for his arrest.
RCMP have also charged 37-year-old Frog Lake resident, Kezia Naomi Marie Lewis, with:
          - Breaking and entering

    - Possession of break in tools
          - Possession of property obtained by crime
          - Fail to comply with release conditions (x2)
Lewis was released with her next court date set for Aug. 1, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Lloydminster.
“A repeat property crime offender such as Ronald Jimmy can victimize many residents in a short amount of time,” said Cpl. Brian Weisbrod of the Kitscoty RCMP.
“As he has now failed to appear for court, there is a concern that he intends to continue his criminal behaviour.”

Seniors briefed on AI fraud scams
Up to 85 Lloydminster seniors are up to speed on how to detect financial fraud including scams generated by artificial intelligence, or AI.
The annual event took place during a Food for Thought breakfast, sponsored by Synergy Credit Union, at the Legacy Centre on World Elder Abuse Day last Thursday.

It was organized by Lloydminster Elder Abuse Prevention (LEAP) headed by chair, Tanya Gordon.
“I think we have double the attendance we had last year, so that’s very exciting. I think this year’s topic of financial abuse affects many people and we’ve got many expert speakers,” said Gordon.

The role of AI in financial scams was addressed by Synergy’s keynote speakers, Cheryl Kirzinger, an internal auditor and fraud expert, and Melissa Starchuk, who covers all 12 branches.
“This is sort of a new scam that’s coming out where people believe
they are talking to a loved one and they are being scammed out of money,” said Kirzinger before taking to the podium.
“That is part of our presentation this year that wasn’t part of it last year. Sadly, Melissa and I see new things every couple of weeks. This just happens to be the newest thing we get to talk about.”
Starchuk says the technology of AI is “terrifying” as tech-savvy scammers can trick parents or grandparents into thinking they are hearing the actual voice of a loved one in a frightening scenario that is not real.
“That urgency will make the person act very quickly. Be very cautious of what you’re posting online,” said Starchuk, noting scammers can steal a snippet of someone’s voice from a social media post to create a false message.
“I work with RCMP, and I work with all of our other members and financial institutions as well in the hope we can prevent
          fraud going forward.”
Starchuk noted it is also very rewarding when at the end of the day she and her team can help Synergy members “get out of the bump on the road they are in” as she put it.
Starchuk says there is a wide variety of financial victimization going on today by family members, online scams and even a fake Reader’s Digest lottery fraud targeting Canadian seniors.
“The elders are the ones who do have a lot of the money now, so they do unfortunately fall victim to that,” she said.
Agencies such as Lloydminster Interval Home, Lloydminster Sexual Assault Services, Midwest Victim Services, Lloydminster Family and Community Support Services (FCSS)handed out crime prevention information.
Patrick Lancaster, FCSS manager of social programs and social services with the City of Lloydminster, says elder abuse can range from financial abuse to sexual abuse and emotional abuse from bullying to name a few.

Organizers of the 15th annual Just Kruzin’ Specialty Vehicle Club’s Show and Shine were revving their engines after seeing recordbreaking numbers this year.
The show, held on Saturday at the Servus Sports Centre in conjunction with Border City Connects’ Ribfest, not only drew a large spectator following, but also reached new heights with registered guest vehicles.
          “We’ve always had

“It’s taken us 15 years to get here, but we’re here, and I think we’ve proven we can put on a pretty classy show and shine,” he said, adding the weather was almost as supportive as the many sponsors and volunteers who help put on this annual show.

A third Center Stage student, taught by Edwards, Kadence Trachuk, won her Elementary Vocal class (12 and under) and a $100 scholarship.
Taylor says a lot of students will save their prize money to further invest in their music education.
“The money is given to them to do as they wish,” she explained.

Pianist, Kayla Andres taught by her mom, Michelle, won her Piano Recital competition (14 and under) to earn a $200 scholarship.
Valerie Rollheiser, who is taught by her mom, Pam, got first place in Spo-

Of the total Lloydminster entries in provincials, there were five in vocals, 11 in piano, one woodwind, 12 in musical theatre, three in spoken word, and two in Canada West Excellence.
Edwards was pleased, but not surprised by this year’s overall success at the provincials.
“We have a lot of talent in Lloydminster and I am very privileged to have a lot of talented students. I am very pleased to see them performing well and winning awards,” she said.

“Our hope is to provide seniors with some information so they can be aware when it’s taking place or when they see it taking place with other people and reduce the stigma,” said Lancaster.
“There is a lot of shame around elder abuse. People don’t like to talk about it and that can prevent people from reaching out and getting help.”
LEAP committee rep, RCMP Constable Melanie Flynn was also on hand to talk about support resources.
“We were asked to bring some information on victims of crime and supports for seniors around the city,” said Flynn. “We brought our MidWest Victim Services with us too, so they are here to speak to seniors if ever they become victims of crime.”
Flynn says the LEAP committee is also promoting crime prevention through environmental design and different changes in seniors’ lifestyles.
“The theme is Food for Thought, so it’s great to have some information to share with seniors,” she said.
“My favourite part is when seniors just come up to me and ask me questions face to face.”

            Focus Society spills the beans
          GEOFF LEE WRITER

The Focus Society for Support Services is a little-known support agency for families and youth who are experiencing trauma or are at risk.
The non-profit receives referrals through the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services and both Lloydminster school divisions as well as provides fees for services to help children not under court-ordered protection in the province.

Tami Molle, director of family and children support services, brought the Rotary Club of Lloydminster up to speed on what the Focus Society does as a guest speaker at their Monday lunch.

“I just want them to know what we do and get our name out there and let them know what kind of supports we have,” said Molle.
The Lloydminster branch has 14 employees serving about 90
          families in its district.
“We work with children that are maybe living in foster care or in group homes and have experienced some mental health issues or living with families with addictions and stuff,” explained Molle.
The Focus Society is all about supports for families and children.
“If they are going through trauma, we help them seek out some counselling,” said Molle.
Once they get a referral, they meet up with them and find out what their needs are.
“We work with them to achieve goals that are set out through the ministry,” said Molle
She says families can call her at 780-8753544 or they can contact the Ministry of Social Services in Saskatchewan.
“They will make the referral and contact me and set up services,” she explained.
Molle says for families in financial trauma, they try to hook them up with low-income housing and food hampers and stuff.

Ecoplast Solutions needs a new trophy case.
The innovative Lloydminster company that designs and manufactures houses from recycled plastic bottles is the winner of two awards this month for its green technology.
The company is the recipient of an OTIS award presented on June 12 for “Outstanding In Stewardship” (business category) from the Battle River Watershed Alliance for its housing project in Millet Alberta.
Ecoplast built a 2,900 sq. ft. house with a garage there in 2022 using 1.25 million plastic bottles in its construction panels.
“We congratulate you for creating green building technology that enables circular economics in the highly wasteful construction industry,
while creating structures with high energy ratings for reduced heating, cooling, and operational costs,” said watershed alliance director, Catherine Peirce.
“We work with other non-profits like The Olive Tree and the Salvation Army and get those supports to them,” she said.
Molle came with CEO Robert Snow, who works in Vermilion.
Snow noted the need for support continues to ratchet up due to social factors such as financial stress from inflation and all types of addictions.
“We’ll help families find work and work on resumes with them. We’ll also build life skills they might be needing growth in and help youth and children find the education they need,” said Snow.

impressed by how much I get out of it,” said Snow.
He says drug addiction, for example, doesn’t just traumatize that person, but the whole family as well.
“There’s mental and emotional sides of it,” he said, along with family violence and financial trauma.
Snow says the main goal at Rotary was for him and Molle to share what Focus does and give them some background on who they serve in the district communities.
“Our main goal is just getting the awareness of what we do out there, which is surveying families and children in crisis,” he said.
Molle also told Rotary the Focus Society started an Invest in Our Youth campaign in May.
“That is set up for families that can afford our services and are not mandated through the courts,” she said.

Lloydminster is on the cusp of another growth spurt with some major projects underway and in the works.
For starters, Covenant Energy from Saskatchewan will invest about $900 million to build a renewable diesel and aviation fuel refinery using canola oil as a feedstock.
Hundreds of jobs will be created when construction starts next summer with the promise of about 60 fulltime jobs by the time it’s up and running in 2026.

The new Co-op car wash at 50 Ave. and 12
The Meridian Source is the only media outlet to report bids are being accepted for a new 160,000 sq. ft. Costco warehouse in Lloydminster, and we have proof in hand.
Documents show Costco had intended to locate in Lloydminster as early as 2019 when an environmental assessment of the site was completed.
Why everything associated with Costco is so secretive is beyond me and many others as it’s a major economic driver.
If this development goes ahead, it will likely bring several other businesses that usually set up around Costco
and secure Lloydminster as a key regional hub for businesses.
It’s certainly good news for real estate property values that have been lagging over the past few years.
The revised completion date on Aug. 31, 2025, will fit in with the construction of the Lloydminster Place event arena and help fill that facility with the added traffic Costco will bring to the city.
No doubt the Costco project could also lead to the widening of 75th Ave. and 12 St. as well as maybe some bike routes to the site.

News of the Costco project is already creating a buzz online and in coffee shops along with a sense of optimism.
The rumour mill also keeps buzzing about who is going into the old Canadian Tire store since a tenant has yet to be named.
My best guess is Save-On-Foods, which is expanding in Western Canada, but it could be the world’s first Bob’s Your Uncle store for all I know.

Three market lambs were also donated by their buyers to local non-profit charities.
Northern Livestock Sales donated a lamb to The Olive Tree and the Lloydminster Men’s Shelter.

    away from the world.”
Something new to this year’s show was the use of a large video screen, brought in by Maz Entertainment, which was something Duhaime
          was excited about.
“This year we changed things up and have Maz Entertainment here with their big screen,” he explained.
          “They’ll do interviews
on the big screen, but we’re also going to be displaying the winning vehicles on the screen so people can easily identify those who won.”

The Lloydminster Rescue Squad, Britannia Fire Department and Canadian Armed Forces members from CFB Wainwright all had specialty vehicles on display, which was a huge draw for the day’s younger crowd.

Duhaime explained how getting kids involved and interested in cars and car culture is also something the
          show strives for.
“That’s the whole idea, to instil a sense of pride in the vehicles and an interest level,” he said.

“This is a hobby we enjoy and we want to pass it down. Kids today don’t know what a fin or chrome on a vehicle looks like because they’re all plastic now. To bring these back and show them, and put big smiles on their faces,
          that’s why we do this.”
Greg Steib, president of the Just Kruzin’ Specialty Vehicle Club, echoed Duhaime in saying the day is about more than just cars.
“Today is about getting the community together,” said Steib.
“Kids, families, the Just Kruzin’ family, everyone, and it’s about showing off some vehicles that normally sit in garages and hidden

Synergy donates $100,000 to rebuild lives
Synergy Credit Union has donated $100,000 to help displaced Ukrainian women and other nationals rebuild their lives in the wake of the war with Russia–with more donations to come.
This fund will go to the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF).
Synergy’s donation will help fund a CDF program project that aims to rebuild and promote economic prosperity for 2,200 vulnerable and displaced women.
“The humanitarian needs of Ukraine are many,” said Synergy’s chief executive officer Glenn Stang.
“We are honoured to support the Ukraine people’s resilience through our donation.”

The ATB Financial Lloydminster Triathlon is at the point where it almost runs itself.

This year’s swim, bike and run event at Bud Miller All Seasons Park went off in near auto mode last Friday, despite more than 800 kids from all Lloydminster schools taking part.

“Every year, we dust off the cobwebs and put it together,” said Cindy Rekimowich, manager of programs and events with the City of Lloydminster, just minutes before race orientation.
One of the secret event ingredients, according to Rekimowich, is the event partnerships listing Lakeland College, both school divisions, the City of Lloydminster

Another factor is having the same 10-member organizing committee since day one.
“We’ve been doing this for a number of years and the same people just keep coming out and we get more volunteers every year,” said Rekimowich with the sun shining.
“It’s going to be a great day.”
Jim Taylor, owner of Grindin Gears Bikes n’ Boards, found himself with far fewer bikes to tweak this year thanks to the well-oiled organizing machine.
“The triathlon committee did a good job in getting the work out there so it’s a much more organized year as far as bike repair went,” said Taylor.

As for the weather, he said, “You can’t beat the day when you get sunshine.”

The sunny skies also made race director, Sheldon Gallagher, feel amazing and stoked for the kids.
“The weather is cooperating and we have so many volunteers here this morning. This has gone so smoothly, probably the smoothest one ever. We are ready to rock,” he said.

“The kids are so excited, they’re nervous, but that’s good nervous.”

That was the case for Oscar, the youngest of three sons of Mackenzie Brown, who seemed dialled in on the task ahead and left questions to his dad.

Another great year for kids’ triathlon

“This is Ozzie (Oscar), he’s my 7-yearold; he’s ready to go,” said Brown, who noted his other sons Cohen, nine, and Ellis 11, are all going solo with fun being the goal.
“I think this is our fourth year being here,” said Brown.
He was one of the hundreds of dads and family members in the mix, which Gallagher says is a positive side effect the committee never could have planned for.
“That just happened organically, so all good stuff,” he said.
The triathlon has become a family event for Tracy Matthews, the volunteer event coordinator.

“My entire family participates in some way shape or form. I have one child competing this year and all my kids have volunteered for the program for the past 10 years,” said
          Matthews.
“My husband and I and my older (kids) are all volunteers, so it’s just giving back to the community.”
Her role is to find enough volunteers to keep the event running smoothly, and there is no shortage of unpaid help.
“We actually have a lot of people who just come because they want to be here and a lot of parents who want to be part of the action,” said Matthews.
“We are excited to get going another year.”

Gallagher is the acting principal at École St. Thomas and says the kids’ triathlon goes beyond the competition, in his opinion, with some life lessons to be learned.
“This is more about life-long activity than it is about anything. If you want to learn about collaboration, this is collaboration at its best,” he said.
“When you get three young people who aren’t really sure what to do and they have to work together to figure it out (along with the parents), just to try it, is a success.”
Collaboration was top of mind for young firsttime swimming triathlete Jayd Scherger.
“I’m swimming with my team and my friend Jazzlyn is biking and my friend Lily is running,” said the 10-year-old.
Her mom, Danielle, was also in a triathlon of sorts having to keep watch on three of her girls.
“I’ve got a lot of watching to do and cheering,” she said.

Sask sees increase in wholesale trade
Last week, Statistics Canada released April 2023 wholesale trade figures, showing Saskatchewan with an increase of 45.7 per cent compared to the same
time last year (seasonally adjusted). This was the third-highest percentage change among the provinces.
The total value of Saskatchewan’s wholesale trade was $5.1 billion in April 2023.
“Saskatchewan’s economy continues to grow at a healthy pace from the hard work of our producers and manufacturers,” said Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison last week.
“Today’s increase in wholesale trade is further proof that Saskatchewan has the food, fuel and fertilizer that the world needs.”

Farm products led the year-over-year growth with an increase of more than 300 per cent for a total of $931 million (seasonally adjusted).
Saskatchewan’s economy has been the focus of attention in recent weeks, with a Conference Board of Canada report stating that Saskatchewan will lead the nation in economic growth for 2023 and 2024.

Despite a national slowdown on the horizon, Saskatchewan remains one of the top provinces. GDP is expected to increase 2.5
per cent in 2023 and an additional 1.9 per cent in 2024.

In the recently released State of Trade Report, Saskatchewan saw the total value of exports to the world
reach a record-breaking $52.6 billion in 2022. This marks the highest figure ever recorded in the province’s history and 42 per cent higher than the 2021 record of $37 billion.
