During this summer’s drought, have you watered your grass or have you let your grass turn brown?
I don’t water my grass. I just hope for the best. I don’t like the idea of spending money on making my grass green. But I’m not looking down on anyone if that’s what they want to do! For me, I’m hoping that the brown grass turns green once again when the rain comes. It’s dormant, right?

Have you ever let your soul turn brown? God tells us to regularly “water” our souls with his Word and Sacraments: “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly,” God says (Colossians 3:16). Your soul cannot stay healthy unless it regularly hears God’s Word.
For some, this is a difficult time of year to stay close to God’s Word. Summer pulls people in all kinds of different directions. The soul starts to “dry up” as God’s Word is replaced with a long list of summer activities that just have to be done.

Recently it has begun to rain again, and the grass has turned green. The same thing happens to your soul when you get back into God’s Word: “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth, It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:10).
