This newsletter is the special edition for the Hobo Classic Show. It is dedicated to the exhibitors, families and friends, and the many volunteers who helped to put on the show and festivities. The show editions are the larger newsletters and they take some time to put together. They’re also my favorite newsletters to work on. Due to a new size limit, the Hobo Edition has been divided into Volume 1 and Volume 2.

The History of the HOBO CLASSIC

In 2000, Dan and Marilyn Milton, Cris Jennings, Sherry Johnston, Greg and EstherSue Sykes, and Doug and Darlene Meyers purchased the Firecracker Sale and turned it into a non-profit organization to benefit the llama industry. The Miltons traveled to Estes Park Wool Market & Llama Show in Missouri, the Ag Show in California and OFFF in Oregon with extensive displays to promote all aspects of the llama industry. Dan and Marilyn gave seminars all over the country and hosted two major llama auctions combined with shows in Roseberg, Oregon. They turned all profits back into the industry by educating, sponsoring events, giving scholarships and even supporting organizations such as LANA with a $5,000 donation to sustain them.

As sales on the west coast were declining, the group needed another way of making money. Because shows were still popular, they decided a new show was the way to go. All desirable dates for a show were already booked so the Miltons conceived the idea of a show that could be held in the winter time and the Hobo Classic was born. Grooming became “illegal” and to enforce that, there were Hobo cops and a jail. It grew from there to include an entire Hobo town complete with a junk yard, a soup kitchen, a dock, box car, outhouses (all decorated with authentic Hobo symbols) and a perpetual yard sale where those who didn’t have costumes could get themselves in the spirit of things. For the first several years, there were over 300 llamas in attendance at the shows. There were many special events for all levels of performance with awards and cash prizes. The group sponsored sportsmanship and service awards, as well.

In 2008, the Miltons purchased the Celebrity Show and they passed the Hobo Classic to LANA. For many years, the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds was the home to Hobo. Chene and Andrea Mogler and their family brought the spirit of the show back to its true Hobo roots, arresting and jailing the “criminals” who were caught grooming at the show. After several years, Kathy Nichols became superintendent and continues to work to make the Hobo Classic Show and festivities a fun weekend for everyone. In 2022, the show moved to the Merced County Fairgrounds which better fit LANA’s needs.

Next year, get your best Hobo attire on, load up your dirtiest camelids and join us as we continue the tradition of the Hobo Classic Show.

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

What a weekend! What a great turnout! The Hobo Classic Show had 58 animals entered and 137 entries this year. Thank you Margaret Drew for judging our show. Thank you Joy Pedroni for all that you do as the show secretary, scorekeeper and putting the program together. Thank you to the volunteers who helped in and around the arena. Thank you exhibitors for your participation and bringing your wonderful animals to the show. I hope you enjoyed going through the performance classes. Thank you to the volunteers who unloaded, set in place and loaded the performance obstacles.

The Hobo Village was amazing! It truly takes a village to construct a village. Thank you to the Pedroni trio for that special touch in creating the Hobo ambience. It makes the Village even more memorable. Thank you to the many volunteers for unloading, holding in place and putting together, packing and loading the village backdrops and props to go home. Thank you to Sue Rich and Robin Muirhead for setting up and keeping the hospitality table stocked.

Saturday evening festivities were fun starting with a delicious Taco Bar dinner. Thank you to the crew who ordered, picked up and set out dinner. Thanks Crystal Myers, for adding the fresh avocados to our meal. After dinner, LANA’s annual membership meeting took place and the presentation of LANA’s Annual Awards. The evening wasn’t over yet as there was more to come. Thank you, Patti Oxenham for conducting the Dessert Auction. She is truly an auctioneer extraordinaire. Not only was the dessert auction entertaining but for a wonderful cause. The funds raised will go to LANA Lama Lifeline. There were two silent auctions as well. Select items were on a special table with proceeds also going to Lifeline. LANA’s general fund benefited from the other silent auction which will help with activities throughout the year. Thank you to Sue Rich, Robin and Emily Muirhead and Keralyn Vessels for running the auctions. Thank you to those who donated items for the auctions. And thank you to the winning bidders. We truly appreciate your generosity.

Lee and Linda Beringsmith were awarded the Adult Follow Me Award for their commitment to the llama community including: providing barn watch duty at the California State Fair, enthusiastically participating in the Walk-a-Llama event at State Fair, annually providing a “Hiking the Buttes” experience, organizing community service through the American River CleanUp, serving on the LANA Board of Directors after transitioning from the CalILA Board and recently involving their local library with hands-on llama experiences when reading llama themed books. Congratulations!

The 2022 Adult Follow Me Award was awarded to Jerry and Kim Kimbro for their dedication to llamas in need of rescue and re-homing. Jerry has been on the LANA Lifeline Committee for many years, coordinating transport, funds and foster homes as needed. Jerry and Kim once took in 65 neglected llamas as fosters during a single rescue operation a few year ago. A set of week old twins were part of that rescue and their mother unfortunately died after arriving at the ranch. Kim spent many sleepless nights bottle feeding and caring for those twins. Jerry also moderates the California Llama Alpaca Rehome Group page on Facebook. He is always busy vetting possible homes and connecting llamas and people together to find that perfect match. Thank you to Jerry and Kim for all your hard work and love of llamas.

ARRESTS:

Five arrests were made during the weekend. Bail was posted for all the offenders and donated to LANA Llama Lifeline.

ANONYMOUS TIP:

Saturday afternoon on January 28, 2023, the department received an anonymous tipoff by text message that there was a person with a shopping cart and a spotted llama passing out alcohol in the form of canned Mimosas at a public gathering. The culprit was later identified as Patti Oxenham. She was arrested later that evening.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA:

On the evening of January 28, 2023, it was observed on our surveillance camera, offender Lisa Labendeira was making a jail break. Sheriff Pedroni was quick to respond and placed offender Labendeira back into custody.
