LEADING THE WORLD IN VIROLOGY DISCOVERIES AND CURES

THE LKSIOV 2017 ANNUAL REPORT

39 | P a g e

MAJOR INVESTMENTS The Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology was established on April 23, 2010 through combined gifts from the Li Ka Shing (Canada) Foundation and the Government of Alberta. The Endowment from the Li Ka Shing (Canada) Foundation has been fundamental for the establishment of this state-of-the-art virology institute that is currently home to some of the world’s best researchers in virology and virus-associated disease. This endowment also supports LKSIOV sponsorship of educational and academic activities (as detailed in the Sponsorship section). Institute of Virology (institute funding) discovery research and translation D Lorne Tyrrell (Director, PI) Li Ka Shing (Canada) Foundation (2010- 2020) $25,000,000 ($2.5 million per year for 10 years)

When the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology was established, Mr. Li emphasized “the importance of translation of discoveries to products to benefit people”. At the same time, the Government of Alberta emphasized the importance of commercialization of discoveries to benefit the patients and the economy. The initial commitment for translational research was $50 million to double match the Li Ka Shing Foundation commitment. Grant to the Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute Michael Houghton (Director, PI) and D Lorne Tyrrell (Co-Director) Alberta Innovates Health Solutions (2013- 2019) $25,000,000 (2018- $5 million pending) (2019- 2023 $20 million pending)

The Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute (LSKAVI) has used artificial intelligence to design several molecules for specific therapeutic targets. The LKSAVI has filed patents in eight therapeutic areas and is working to bring three products to Phase I clinical trials in 2019 (Oncolytics, HCV Vaccine, and Group A Streptococcal Vaccine).

“The strength of a nation and its people depend on education and medical care. These are the country’s roots. And like a tree, the deeper its roots the more flourishing its branches and - Mr. Li Ka-Shing foliage” LEADING THE WORLD IN VIROLOGY DISCOVERIES AND CURES

THE LKSIOV 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 41 | P a g e

EXTERNAL FUNDING Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology members were successful in obtaining 33 awards from funding competitions held in 2017, earning a total of $20,587,236 in new funding (including $14,464,095 in CFI/CRC funding). In 2017, research in the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology was supported by

$16,699,775 in member acquired grant or salary funding and $14,240,121 in CFI funding for a total of $30,939,896. The acquisition of this amount of funding for virus-related research activities highlights the quality and importance of the research programs developed by LKSIOV members and emphasizes the leadership of the Institute, the home Departments and Faculties, and the University of Alberta among Canadian research facilities.

SPIN-OFF COMPANIES Critical to the mandate of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology is the commercialization of products beneficial to human health. Research undertaken by Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology members resulted in the formation of two spin-off companies in 2017. Antibiddies Technologies Inc.

Aurora Vaccines Inc.

Developed to license research derived products

Developed to commercialize a vaccine for hepatitis C

These companies are in addition to the following four companies previously formed: Prophysis Inc. Development of a broad spectrum of antiviral drugs and cancerfighting agents. Products include computer-assisted processes to develop new antivirals and analyze drug toxicity. (Formed 2012) Achlys Inc. In silico cardiac ion channel drug screening. Development and commercial sale of a novel human ventricular cardiomyocyte cell line. (Formed 2014) Heka Therapeutics Inc. A spin-off company from the Applied Virology Institute for the research, development, and commercialization of small molecule immunomodifiers to treat cancer and chronic infections. (Formed 2015) Aurora Vaccines (Formed 2016) The development and formation of six spin-off companies in the seven years following the establishment of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology highlights the quality and applicability of the research within the Institute and indicates the dedication of the Institute towards the translation of research discoveries to products that benefit society.

GRANT AWARD PROGRAMS The Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology established a regular process of grant awards in 2011. This successful program assists Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology members with “proof-of-principal”, “translational”, and “rapidresponse” awards. The goal of this award program is to produce intellectual properties (IPs) that pertain to the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology’s mission to support virology research and human health. The proof-of-principal award enables Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology researchers to explore leads that show promise for creating IP with eventual translation into practical applications. The translational award supports the translation of IP into clinical practice. The rapid response award provides immediate funds. These awards are in addition to Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology Start-Up support provided for New Investigators. In 2017, the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology awarded three new proof-ofprincipal awards to the sum of $150,000, and provided a second year of support for three proof-of-principal awards to the sum of $150,000.

Since the inception of the Award Programs, the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology has supported its members with $2,617,826.
