rt Deco jewellery ‘The Downton Abbey’ effect has resulted in a year on-year increase in the value of Art Deco jewellery pieces since the series begun. These pieces are often very glamorous yet wearable, beautifully crafted and appeal to all ages. Any vintage examples signed by Cartier, Van Cleef or Arpels are particularly sought after because their pieces were of exceptional quality. Be on the look-out for pieces by Boucheron and Tiffany, with rings and earrings being the most popular settings for jewels and brooches being the least. Oriental Ceramics Over the next decade the values of Oriental Ceramics has been predicted to increase from between 50% to 80+%. These items are often small in size, making them more desirable as they are generally easy to store, display, move and can be kept in the investor’s own home. Jewellery Coloured stones, especially diamonds, really are a ‘girl’s (and an investor’s) best friend’ with a dramatic rise in popularity amongst the top end jewellery collectors. A pink diamond set a new world record in 2015, achieving a hammer price of nearly £55 million (and that particular Sotheby’s sale was the highest grossing jewellery sale ever!).

Watches Move over Rolex and even Patek Philippe, today’s top time pieces are bespoke - as a Bermont or RW Smith. Limited editions related to movies or special events (for example, the link up between Jaguar and Bremont) are highly sought after and therefore seen as great investments. Paintings Expressionist art, especially by the ‘top six’ (Amedeo Modigliani, Frances Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Edvard Munch, Andy Warhol and Alberto Giacometti) are the most sought after and highly prized pieces. All these artists are modern, western, figurative artists. The popularity of such works has continued to soar, with a new auction record being set in November 2015 with the sale of a painting of a nude by Modigliani for £113 million. Taxidermy Surprisingly the popularity of this art form has seen a recent resurgence, with the influence of artists such as Damien Hirst (with his pickled cow and shark in formaldehyde) creating a new following for this art from and it is now enjoying a ‘avantgarde’ cutting-edge image that has sent the value of top collectibles rocketing, with items increasing by up to 1,000% within the last decade. Clothes Vintage pieces, especially high end evening dresses, have increased dramatically in spring

popularity over the last few years. With the most desirable, hence the most valuable (and wearable!) being by Yves St Laurent, Balenciaga, Dior and Chanel. Likewise new and vintage Hermes and Chanel bags and Hermes scarves are often purchased purely as investment pieces. Cars Classic cars are still very popular with the high net worth client, and it attracts a very passionate sort of collector, with vintage sports or ‘funky’ smaller cars such as the original Fiat 500 being especially popular. Investments over the past decade have seen returns of up to 450%. Wine A new record for the most expensive lot of wine sold at auction has also been set in 2015, with 114 bottles of Burgundy (Romanee-Conti) selling for £1 million at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong. More high net worth clients are investing in (known as ‘laying down’) wine, especially popular is wine ‘in bond’ which is stored in a UK Bonded warehouse, where no tax is payable. As fine wine matures it improves with age. A very limited amount is produced every year and whilst the rising interest in this particular type of investment continues to grow, the supply of the top end wines cannot be increased.
