With increasing numbers of people showing a greater interest and awareness of environmental needs, the desire for highquality, well-planned outside spaces, has never been greater. From public parks to private gardens, town squares to office schemes, elegant, inspiring and safe places provide a positive and lasting benefit to our quality of life. Why work with Liz Lake Associates? Every landscape has its own unique features and that is also true of every practice. Our flexible, talented team, providing services across the UK, is one with which you can lay the foundations for a lasting and productive relationship. This will be built on mutual respect, understanding and a shared vision of what is needed to achieve the desired result. No matter how large or small the project, we believe that the art of the landscape architect is to discover the special sense of place - and to enhance it. Our holistic approach We are always mindful of the financial, and sometimes also the emotional investment you will be making, so this is our first consideration. We will come to you with fresh ideas, assessing the context and challenges, looking for local inspiration, proposing creative solutions and devising a strategic, sustainable approach. After researching the selected site, we will work with you to develop the brief and explore the creative and planning scope of the scheme stage by stage. We will anticipate local planning and environmental requirements, identify the necessary surveys and reports that will be required, negotiate with all interested parties, draw up and submit plans, produce a full and accurate budget report and propose realistic time schedules to see the project to completion.

The size and scope of our services Our size is such that you can be sure to receive individual attention from highly experienced and skilled professionals. We offer a full range of services including as planning, urban design, nature conservation heritage landscapes, graphic and 3D design and training. This enables us to work effectively on even the largest and most complex schemes. We will involve you in the collaborative and multi-disciplinary process throughout. With any new development, we believe that the design of the public realm and the location of open spaces must be seen as equally important to the built form, helping to ensure a functional and meaningful integration between the two. As well as providing a competitive standard landscape design service, we specialise in the detailed design of the signature public open spaces that are so often at the heart of our clients’ new developments. These open spaces are vital in setting the tone for a positive sales environment and creating a strong sense of location. Looking to the future, conserving the past We are working with a number of far-sighted developers to create high-quality and sensitive landscape settings for restoration and conversion projects. Current government guidelines actively encourage, where possible and appropriate, the re-use of existing buildings to help meet targets for the provision of new homes. These properties are often key buildings within the local urban fabric and are an integral part of the area’s history. The key to our success has been to understand the historic importance of these properties, while interpreting the developer’s vision for their potential clients. We help to balance historic landscape details with the creation of high quality, contemporary and easily maintainable planting design. The result has been sensitive and stunning landscape settings for properties that are starting a new and exciting chapter in their history.

Approach The site forms part of the Ebbsfleet Valley Strategic site, an area of land which has been subject to extensive quarrying and infrastructure works over the past years, which is now planned for strategic redevelopment including 10,000 new homes, employment uses and leisure facilities. The site itself is former National Grid land and includes a decommissioned substation as well as overhead power lines. The proposed development sought to transform the site into a new urban centre, enhancing the visual amenity of the site with a strong landscape strategy and removing substantial infrastructure from the site. Our work included a series of photomontages which were prepared from four key viewpoints agreed with the local authority. The photomontages illustrated the scheme at year 1 and year 15 and were submitted alongside the visual impact assessment as part of the environmental statement for the scheme. A cumulative landscape and visual assessment of the scheme was carried out together with the various surrounding planned Ebbsfleet Valley development applications. Outcome The Ebbsfleet Valley is now subject to a commitment by the Government as a new ‘Garden City’, which Chancellor George Osborne announced on Sunday, will deliver up to 15,000 new homes. Osborne said it would be a “proper garden city”, the first since Welwyn Garden City was founded in 1920.

This important housing scheme for Gateway Housing sits in a relatively constrained site in Bromley By Bow, East London within Tower Hamlets Gateway Housing approached Liz Lake Associates to develop a masterplan with architects Ingleton Wood which would respond to its immediate context and in part help unify a somewhat disfunctional area of predominantly post-war social housing, 1970’s housing courts and contemporary, high rise tower blocks. d in t an ing tex s con al hou i ate edi r soc imm st-wa its o d to ntly p a pon res omin uld ed wo of pr a ich wh al are n lan erp nctio ast u a m disf lop what e eve to d som ped nify a hel u We t help par

Approach By attending regular meetings and consultations with London Legacy Development Corporation the site was seen as critical to the setting and further enhancement of Bromley By Bow and Tower Hamlets. By developing sketch designs in close association with the architect the building position was critical in defining the surrounding streetscape and in creating a visually interesting yet high quality public realm. The scheme required care and diligence during the design process to help create a scheme which achieved or exceeded the clients aspirational aims whilst meeting budgetary constraints. By locating the building in an optimum position on site the development was enhanced with a large communal garden to the south which helped block views from the neighbouring underground and help filter noise from the east along the A12. Full scheme plans were produced for planning application including detail hardscape and lighting design which helped enhanced the architectural façade and setting. Outcome The scheme is currently awaiting planning approval with construction due on site in autumn 2014.

Approach A strong landscape framework was established within the overarching development vision and objectives identified within the existing Design Code. The village quarter character area was further defined with distinctive tree and shrub planting palettes focused about community open space areas, streetscape, local play areas and individual plot landscape. The public space and individual plot landscapes include a combination of native plants and semi-native species, many of which are bee-friendly, with hedgerows and large trees (oak, lime) and smaller flowering trees such as wild cherry, Callery pear var. and rowan adding to the village character. Further to planning approval of the detailed planting scheme, Liz Lake Associates have continued to oversee the landscape implementation within the construction phase of the development. Approach A detailed survey was undertaken of all existing trees within the site, noting those protected by Tree Preservation Orders which were to be retained within the development design. A design strategy was then conceived to create a sensitive yet stunning landscape to surround the historic buildings. Outcome Important trees protected by Tree Preservation Orders, have been retained within the development design to enhance external spaces. The existing core buildings, combined with the new extensions and underground parking, have created eight courtyard spaces. The design philosophy was to give each courtyard a distinct character while maintaining a harmonious feel to the overall proposals. Two courtyards have been restored close to the original historic design, while the remainder are contemporary in style.

As a result of a new residential development, the Grange Farm Centre Trust invited Liz Lake Associates to help negotiate a Section 106 agreement to enhance an adjacent 12 hectares of public open space in their ownership. When the landscape works were implemented the Trust asked us to monitor work on site on their behalf.

Liz

Approach Liz Lake Associates’ role was to advise on the wording and content of the Section 106 prepared by Epping Forest District Council and Essex Wildlife Trust and to help the Trust secure the most appropriate solution for a new informal public open space. A programme of initial works and a long-term management plan were prepared. We monitored the site for two years, overseeing vegetation management, scrub clearance, grassland establishment, planting and the construction of an all-weather path. In the nature conservation areas, particular objectives have been to increase the area of habitat suitable for great crested newts, and to encourage the development of species-rich grassland. Associated with two sports pitches is a new community building designed for the Trust by the Tooley Foster Partnership which includes changing facilities, a community hall and a workshop for Essex Wildlife Trust.

Outcome The developer’s team provided just the right touch for this project, which has a strong conservation bias. Following a ‘growing in’ stage the public now enjoys access to informal meadows where the management policy will benefit local nature conservation and provide a valuable resource for the local community. The football club, Colebrook Royals, uses the Pavilion and playing fields as its base and the Essex Wildlife Trust has established new opportunities across the site. The Pavilion is being used for private and community functions becoming a valuable hub for the community. The playing fields and meadows will also form a ‘green’ link that connects to Roding Valley Meadows Nature Reserve north of the M11 and the Three Forests Way.

From the outset the scheme was designed around a central core of Open Space which at its centre is to be predominantly hard landscaping encompassing a primary school, retail facilities and an integrated play scheme which links to surrounding play networks. Liz Lake Associates helped select local artists to create art installations set within the landscape design, using predominantly local craftsman this will help bring a distinct sense of place to the scheme. Due to the sites topography and soil structure LZL worked closely with the engineers to create a SUD’s network based around a series of seasonally wet/ dry ponds which were set within the POS network, enhancing the scheme with natural habitats. Approach A contextual study was produced which included the immediate surroundings, the historic villages of Purton and Cricklade form an attractive, distinctive part of the wider area, exhibiting a strong sense of local vernacular. The traditional vernacular architecture found in these locations have influenced the architecture proposed and create an opportunity to form a strong connection with the historic parts of the area. Materials were carefully selected to respect those traditionally found in the area and will predominantly be of a natural stone finish. Outcome The project was split into two phases of development, phase 1 is currently approved and being constructed on site. The development has a hierarchical approach utilizing structural planting regimes, a more natural, semi-ornamental style to the boundaries with a more formal, grid approach to the Centre. The primary access routes are to be planted with large, semi-mature native tree species leading through the scheme to the central hub, these are to be planted in specific tree pits to ensure longevity and to provide a high structural canopy. This strong landscape structure helps to form a cohesive development which responds to its immediate context whilst having its own unique sense of place.

Wellington College is a thriving and successful coeducational private school in Berkshire with an international reputation; the need for new facilities to meet that success is a continuing challenge. Liz Lake Associates was appointed by the College to understand the historic landscape and then to help develop a strategy that would inform decisions on the siting of new development on this historic site

“

Approach Archival and field work undertaken by Debois Landscape Survey Group revealed that the College was developed on a grid based on rides across former heathland. This was emphasized by the planting of double avenues of oaks, monkey puzzles and Wellingtonias as well as extensive woodland areas that provide a magnificent setting for the school buildings today. Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, took a great interest in the development of the school and he influenced many aspects of how the estate was developed including extensive lakes and sports fields. Serpentines were overlaid over the grid by the well-known Victorian landscape designer, William Nesfield, with boarding houses added set in wooded glades and cottages gardens.
