Earthquake Survival Kit

Aims to increase the survival chance of entrapped victims

CONTEXT

Academic Work, Group Project 2013.07 ~ 2013.10

Answering for the most destructive catastrophe Earthquakes are among the most destructive types of natural disasters. However, many do not perish during the tremor but die being trapped and injured under rubbles, waiting for rescue. Ted Constan, an American NGO, says that some

200,000 people were injured or trapped but not killed by the quake; 25,000 of them died each day that has passed since the tremor. How to increase the survival chance of entrapped victims by self-rescue products comes to our concern.

Earthquake Survival Kit

Aims to increase the survival chance of entrapped victims This kit contains 3 main parts: the helmet, hydration system and dustproof mask, which not only offers protection through the disaster, but also providing guidance and sending out distress signal for user.

DESIGN BRIEF

collapse of buildings / structures

EVENT Tremor

POST-EVENT 12 hours

Day 1

36 hours

Day 2

60 hours

Day 3

84 hours

Day 4

“golden 48 hours”, best time for rescue

landslide

time of the entrapped individuals survive without water

tsunami fire / explosion Internal crush injury, lack of medical aids

90% of the death toll are due to the collapse of the collapse of buildings / structures

the fade away time of blood loss is less than 24 hours

when most aftershock happens, causing another wave of collapse

when hydropenia and psychological pressure become severe, feeling despair

hydropenia airway infection by dust psychological pessure

MOST FATAL PROBLEMS SURVIVAL NEEDS

PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS

Function Defination Hardware Protection 1. Helmet, 25~50mm interval between the shell and liner as a buffer zone. 2. Dustproof mask.

ELECTRONICS FUNCTION

HARDWARE FUNCTION

3. 2L hydration system, to ensure the essential water intake during 72 hours trapped under rubble. Electronics Function 1. Wap 300c wireless communica-

tion module sending signal. 2. Voice module, offer self-aid guidance and play tender music to ease victim’s mood.

USER SCENARIO

1

1. Recieving a signal from EWS ( earthquake warning system). 2. Rush to the spot where the batch of kits are placed. 3. Pack the hydration system and helmet, and the system will be activated.

CONCEPUALIZTION

First stage mainly developed the relationship of these different components.

The second stage comes to integrate and simplify the design.

Design Thinking “Design shall satisfy not only the functional aspect, but emotional aspect as well, together they make functionality.

My Role in Project During this project, I worked as the leader of our team, collaborating with Mechanics Institute, Beijing University of Science and Technology. My work was from identifying problems to the concept development, including usage mode defination and product visualization.
