Colorado-based designer Twyla Gurlea, founder of ColorView Design, brings academic precision to this emotional science. Trained under color psychology pioneer Frank Mahnke, Gurlea explains that “Our most immediate reactions to color may stem from biology, but the way we experience and interpret color is shaped by layers of cultural, social, and personal meaning. For example, seeing fresh green leaves in spring can feel uplifting not only because of our biological response to vibrant greens, but also because we associate them with renewal and the return of life.”

COLOR

This layered understanding is reflected in design choices across the mountains. Jewel tones and earth palettes—moss greens, canyon browns, and alpine blues—have surged in popularity, not as fleeting trends but as emotional echoes of the land itself.

At the same time, the luxury real estate market prizes universality. Gurlea notes, “Because color is such a powerful communicator, I avoid sending messages that might feel too specific or personal. Instead, I focus on neutral, grounded palettes that create a sense of warmth and balance, often using earth tones that feel natural, inviting, and timeless.”

This balance between emotional depth and broad appeal is essential in real estate. A neutral foundation allows buyers to project their own lives into a space, making it easier for them to see themselves there. Subtle color decisions, like a living room bathed in golden-hour light or a kitchen with warm wood and stone can evoke emotion more powerfully than bold design statements.

According to Suzanne Griffin, Principal of Winslow House design firm, “In staging, I’ve noticed that using color strategically—maybe in a single accent wall, a piece of furniture, or a rug— helps potential buyers emotionally connect to the home. It makes the space memorable.”

Pantone’s Color of the Year 2025, 171230 Mocha Mousse, nurtures us with its suggestion of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort. It’s a hue that echoes Colorado’s mountain sensibility: rich, tactile, and reassuring.

“We’re seeing a lot of clients becoming braver with color, but still in a very refined, layered way. Instead of the stark neutrals that were popular for so long, we’re using warmer, earthbased neutrals and introducing rich colors through cabinetry, fabrics, and art. There’s a shift toward spaces that feel soulful and grounded, not sterile,” Griffin observes.

Color drenching, where designers envelop walls, furnishings, and ceilings in one continuous tone, represents the next evolution of immersive design. Gurlea views it as a way to create intimacy, especially in smaller spaces, while cautioning that texture must balance saturation. “Without texture,” she says, “the effect can become overstimulating. With it, it becomes grounding, almost cocoon-like.”

Similarly, wood drenching, using consistent finishes across beams, walls, and furniture, brings the tactile warmth of alpine craftsmanship to life. These techniques express the same truth: that color and material can speak to emotion as deeply as music or scent.

It’s about giving the home a rhythm that adjusts with the seasons,” Griffin explains.

Photography and staging follow the same principle. Golden-hour imagery captures not just architecture but emotion, the amber glow spilling through windows, a fireplace flickering against snow, or a home lit from within like a lantern in the dusk.

How did your journey lead you to your current role as Executive Director of the Crested Butte Land Trust?

My story starts in the early 1990s in Crested Butte, when I took a year off from CU Boulder to be a ski bum. That was in 1993, and I never left. I finished my biology degree at Western State University and spent a decade working as an adventure-based educator for the Colorado Outward Bound School throughout the West.

Then, through my work as the Parks & Recreation Director for the Town of Crested Butte, I developed a sense of who I am as a leader and community member.

The mission-oriented nature of Outward Bound was engaging, and the structure and discipline of local government appealed to me. Before joining the Land Trust, I was the Managing Director of Eleven Experiences, which had me opening and operating remote lodges around the world.

At the start of COVID, I wanted to be home more and I wanted to get back to land-based conservation work. In 2020, the stars aligned for me to join the Land Trust.

You’ve called Crested Butte home since the early 1990s. What changes, both positive and challenging, have you seen over the years?

The things that matter most have only improved. The great outdoors is my North Star; being in the woods with friends and family has animated my entire life.

We have more people here now, but we still have tremendous access to public lands. Over the past thirty years, land access via the Land Trust has truly made today the good old days—we’ve never had better access.

Crested Butte's natural environment is an amazing resource. People see the amount of protected open land and choose to invest here. It's one of the reasons people

choose CB over other communities. I believe that is one of our greatest advantages, and we work so hard to protect it.

Can you share more about the Slate River wetlands conservation project?

This is the final large parcel of the Upper Slate River Valley not yet conserved or developed. It’s home to wild trout, great blue heron, elk, and moose, and the floodplain supports sustainable cattle grazing. Protecting this parcel ensures the Slate River wetlands remain an intact and resilient landscape.

We have a closing deadline of February 3rd for the $3.8M acquisition, and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect these 90 acres. The community, local government, and non-profit partners are stepping up bigtime to help the Land Trust conserve this parcel.

How did your time with Outward Bound influence your leadership and philosophy?

The idea is that you achieve hard goals through communication, teamwork, and sometimes adversity, to challenge both your physical and social fitness to accomplish a task. That is so transferable to work, families, and teams.

The ambition should be lofty and need a team to accomplish it. Then you learn how to perform when it is tough, and how to accelerate when things are going well. Pulling those lessons into people’s lives with these transferable skills is transformative.

What are some simple ways we can all be better stewards of the land?

Be as light as possible on the land. It has to support hundreds of thousands of people in our backcountry, and the potential for impact is huge. We want our entire community to be good stewards: travel on durable surfaces and minimize your impact, especially in summer months when we’re at capacity.

I think of our supporters as ambassadors for our natural world. We want to continue to support a thriving landscape for people, wildlife and agriculture. Turning people on to the benefits of land conservation is one of the joys of my work. Being advocates for agriculture and wildlife habitat protection is just as important as recreation.

How did your passion for cooking begin? Was there a specific meal or experience that sparked that interest?

My grandmother influenced me early on. She had a way of turning simple, humble ingredients into something that felt like a warm hug. She cooked with care and patience, never rushed, never measured, and somehow everything always came out perfect. I loved watching that process and how food could bring everyone together around one table. It made me realize that cooking isn’t just about eating; it’s about creating a moment that feels like home.

How did living abroad shape your approach to cooking, in the way you think about ingredients or techniques?

Moving abroad was a big adjustment, especially in the kitchen. I went from fresh ingredients to canned and frozen, and that was a culture shock. But you learn. You adapt. You find ways to make it work. Over time, I learned new techniques, tried ingredients I’d never seen before, and figured out how to blend what I knew with what I was learning. That’s where my curiosity for food really started to grow realizing that every challenge in cooking is just a chance to get creative.

What were your first impressions of Keystone when you arrived?

Keystone looked like something straight out of a Hallmark movie when I first arrived, snow everywhere, cozy lights, and people who smiled at you when you passed them. I didn’t think I was going to stay long, but the mountains have a way of pulling you in. I found my people here. I met my partner here. Little by little, Keystone became home. It’s where I grew up as a leader and as a person.

You’ve had an impressive journey with Vail Resorts. What excites you most about your new role as Senior Director of Mountain Dining at Keystone Resort?

For me, leadership has always been about people. I love building teams and helping others grow into their potential. I’ve had mentors who believed in me before I believed in myself, and I hope to pay it forward. It brings comfort, joy, and a sense of belonging especially in a place like this, where the mountains can feel both big and grounding at the same time.

What does your idea of the perfect meal look like?

A bowl of soup and homemade dumplings on a cold, damp night. That’s it. It doesn’t need to be fancy.

Just something warm that you share with people you love, where you can laugh, relax, and feel completely at ease. That’s my kind of perfect.

What do you love most about living in Summit County?

How did your journey lead you to your current role as Executive Director of Telluride Arts?

I served on my first nonprofit board in high school and have worked in arts nonprofits my entire life. I also teach ballet and contemporary dance, and love serving Telluride. This position at Telluride Arts is a natural progression of my career and allows me to serve the community in a new way.

Telluride has amazing arts organizations and artists. Combined with our town’s history and natural beauty, it’s a total knockout. That vibrant culture is why everyone wants to be in Telluride.

Telluride Arts mission is to support artists, advocate for the arts, and connect diverse audiences with creativity. What current initiatives are you most excited about?

Telluride Arts has an exhibition space called the HQ, where we host group shows and installations. We stay true to our roots supporting local and regional artists. One of those pillars is our small grants program, which is a beautiful way to elevate artists with direct support.

Telluride Arts was the town’s first nonprofit, helping other organizations and events like the Bluegrass Festival, Telluride Theatre and Telluride Film Festival get started. Telluride Arts has grown and evolved to support the community as many events and arts organizations have thrived, our job is to continue to respond to the change in our community and find ways to celebrate and elevate the cultural vibrancy here.

The Makers Market is a year-round artisan market, where we encourage everyone to shop local. We are also excited to work with Mountain Village and the Town of Telluride on public art projects.

You spent several years with the Telluride AIDS Benefit (TAB). What stands out most from your time with that organization?

That organization is almost 35 years old, and it beautifully combines human services with the arts. I helped initiate the Student HIV Awareness Program to bring students to the beneficiary organizations it serves, and a favorite memory was the Runway Fashion Show at the Telluride Regional Airport during COVID!

It's an amazing organization, and I really believe in Laya Barak, the new Executive Director, she is a dynamic force and will do great things.

What were your first impressions of Telluride when you arrived?

I visited in college and there was live music everywhere! I hiked Wilson Peak, and I remember thinking it was a small town but so vibrant with art. After moving here, I can say that I’ve seen more art, music, and live theater here than while I was living in San Francisco.

What are some long-term goals for Telluride Arts?

I want to continue to strengthen how we serve the local arts community and connect local artists. I’ve heard a lot from local artists that they want to connect with one another, so we look to next year as connecting artists through our space. We’re developing some public arts displays through the winter and have some wonderful installations and exhibitions coming from our direct grantees.

Regionally, we’re implementing a social justice art grant and looking to work with Creative Districts on the Western Slope. Colorado’s Western Slope is rich with creativity and talent so that will be a great collaboration through a private grant.

Telluride Arts has an outstanding team, and I’m so blessed to work with them, I also have a supportive Board of Directors. Diana Farrell is Telluride Arts new Board President, and I’ve loved working with her. She provides a lot of vision and momentum for the organization, along with our amazing team. How did your passion for architecture begin? Was there a particular moment or place that first inspired you?

It started when I was a child, growing up in a small midcentury modern house in Southern California. It burned down when I was eleven years old, and my dad took a year off to rebuild it. Watching that process really sparked my initial interest in architecture.

Is there a project that stands out to you, one that you’re especially proud of?

One of my first projects after launching my own practice in 2008 was a collaboration with Amanda Precourt on her home in Lake Creek. My previous boss, Jim Morter, and I co-designed the project, and I served as the local architect on the ground. Amanda is an inspired interior designer, so it was great working with her, and it really jump-started my solo career. Amanda and I have since done five projects together, and she continues to be an inspiration.

How have your experiences growing up in Los Angeles and living in Japan influenced the way you approach design and architecture?

I’m still really drawn to mid-century modern design, Japanese influences, and modest spaces. I also love flexible, multi-use spaces. When I lived in Japan with my host family, I slept in a tatami mat room that became the family office during the day. In both California and Japan, there’s a strong focus on bringing together indoor and outdoor living, because the climate is ideal for it. I love to bring nature inside and allow indoor spaces to spill out, especially in this mountain climate.

What inspired you to co-found Project Funway?

It started with a couple girlfriends wanting to host a little gathering to showcase dresses we had made. That first year, we had about 200 people. As it grew, we decided to raise money for the Education Foundation of Eagle County (EFEC)

after some local school funding initiatives didn't pass—I'm a big advocate for public education. Last year, we had 1,500 people at Dobson Arena and raised half a million dollars.

We offer affordable seats so it remains an inclusive community event with all the schools and families represented, while also serving as a successful fundraiser. EFEC now runs the event, with Wendy Rimel and Tessa Kirchner at the helm, and this year will be our 16th!

In your work with EFEC, what changes or challenges have stood out to you in local schools?

My kids went through local schools, and I’ve always admired how much the schools do with so little funding. They offer great programs with wonderful teachers who serve a very diverse population. When some families move here, the kids might not speak the language, but after they graduate, they’re attaining high levels of education and finding success.

There's a great ethos of teachers feeling supported as EFEC supports them in many ways, such as providing staff so teachers can take breaks and plan lessons, and offering teacher scholarships so they can further their education.

When you think about EFEC’s mission, what does success look like to you?

One of the things EFEC does so well is advocate for education funding through both local and statewide ballot initiatives. To me, success would mean reaching a point where state funding is sufficient, where EFEC can focus more on supporting teachers and students directly. One of EFEC's greatest strengths is how it brings together volunteers and staff from various cultures, which benefits the entire school community.

What current or upcoming project has you most excited right now?

I particularly enjoy designing homes for my contemporaries, trying to make good design affordable. I look forward to more of that. I am also honored to be helping Vail Mountain School (VMS) with a backcountry hut in Emily Franciose’s memory. It will include an educational classroom and serve the broader community in addition to VMS.
