Jil Schlisner, Moss Pink, uses color, harmony and the natural habit of flowers creating magnificent floral displays. When tasked with creating a bouquet for our cover shoot, she was asked to create something a little different, a little minimalist, with a lot of impact. She delivered in the best possible way.

You’ll learn more about Gus Rey in the pages ahead, but we discovered him via Instagram (*so 2025*) a few years ago when the Denver Nuggets won the NBA Championship. As we were looking for an artist to create a cover-worthy art piece, we knew Rey could give us the edgy, yet high-end look we desired. The rest is art history.

Located inside Birdsall & CO. on South Broadway is a shop within a shop, Rogala Design, featuring items from interior designer Amy Rogala. Her one-of-a-kind décor inspired a pop-up shop within Rogala Design, Chez Mémé Vintage. Rug dealer France-Lee Griggs graciously provided several options, of which we chose the stunning overdyed, rich teal hued Turkish rug to complement our signature artwork and amazing home.

Spring is a moment for energy, boldness and clarity. Inspiration bursts through, surrounding us with focus on beauty. The art of natural beauty is a complement to your home and the art that you collect inside. As many of you have heard me say, paradise is personal – your own space, where you will create memories and build a comfortable space representative of who you are.
Each space is a canvas where time stands still in the dayto-day, vibrant colors and bold details paint the story of your life. A single piece—a painting, a sculpture, or a beautifully framed photograph—can infuse a home with fresh energy. As we learn from Ann Benson Reidy later in this magazine, grasping which medium speaks to you and makes you feel connected to a piece is crucial in bringing art into your home.
A well-placed piece of art doesn't just adorn a wall; it sparks a feeling, whether it's the calm of a serene landscape or the burst of energy from an abstract explosion of color. I spent time on the East Coast last fall, where I came upon an art studio filled with colorful art. I immediately had a feeling of happiness and positivity, and I knew this art would fit perfectly in my home.
I purchased several pieces from the artist, Liz Roache, and now, whenever I look at artwork on my wall, it reminds me of time spent with family, of meeting the artist and feeling like it was curated just for me.
Artwork in the home is only one way to experience art. We also shine a spotlight on local artists and how art in public spaces transforms a city and creates community, with the hope that their bold artworks inspire your next creative leap. Whether you go to RiNo specifically to take in the murals, or you’re racing through Denver International Airport, art is all around you. Art is not static; you can find it in the world-class restaurants along the Front Range – both on the walls and on your plates.
Great news! Listing inventory is up and showing activity is increasing indicating market momentum is building. Buyers are no longer waiting on the bench for mortgage rates to drop, or for prices to come down. With inventory up, both have stabilized, giving buyers more options and more negotiating power than in the past several years. There are some great options across the Front Range right now including a castle in Sedalia, a historic property in the heart of the city, and a car collectors dream in Cherry Creek North. As you browse our property pages, imagine making each home your own.
Think about the feeling you want every time you walk through the door of your home and make the experience one of a kind. Let us help you find your paradise in an artful life.
Warmly,
President, Colorado LIV Sotheby’s International Realty

Reflect and absorb
Art, by definition, is the expression of human creative skill and imagination in visual form to be appreciated for beauty and emotional power. Art plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere we create in our homes, enriches our cities, and can shape the food we eat.
Selecting art for your home creates a personal connection reflecting individual taste and invoking a feeling of comfort. The perfect piece can transform a space, evoking memories and taking you back to a place and time that might otherwise be forgotten.
In cities across Colorado, public and street art transform urban landscapes, fostering a sense of identity and community pride. Murals, installations, and sculptures bring character to city streets—some even becoming must visit spots for social media content, drawing tourists in search of the perfect photo op. Statues representing history can invite quiet reflection, while Denver’s Big Blue Bear at the Colorado Convention Center captures whimsy, a nod to the wildlife and playful spirit of the Centennial State.
Art also takes shape in the culinary world, where food becomes a medium for nostalgia, exploration and storytelling. A chef’s mastery of flavors, textures and presentation transcends mere sustenance, turning a dish into an emotion and artistic expression of history, tradition, and innovation.
Art adds depth and character to a room, reflecting a feeling unique to you. A focal point, a conversation starter, art sets the tone for an entire space.
Ann Benson Reidy, founder and principal at Ann Benson Reidy + Associates (ABR + Associates), places artwork for individuals, corporations, nonprofits and real estate developers, handling the process from curation through installation. For those looking to build on their art collection at home, Reidy guides clients in creating longlasting beauty in their home.
“We want to find out who the clients are as people and what they like to exist in, what furnishings they have, the size and scale and volume of their rooms, and what their favorite pieces are in their house whether that’s a chair from a grandmother, or a rug purchased while traveling,” she says.
Art selection can be simple; it can be as intuitive as recognizing when something speaks to you such as a painting with shades of your favorite color. A large entryway may be the perfect place for a carefully chosen sculpture, a bookcase can house smaller sculptures, pottery, and photographs.
“I love working in different mediums. Photography, oil on canvas or linen, ceramic, wood, glass, and steel. A real collection offers a diversity of materials,” explains Reidy.
by Lauren Rubino
Take inspiration from a visit to the Denver Art Museum. A photography exhibit called “Dawoud Bey: Street Portraits” is on display through May 11, 2025, with 37 photographs that focus on the Black communities of Harlem, Washington, D.C., and other East Coast cities.
The Western American art collection consists of two centuries of paintings, sculptures and works on paper, and the Mayer Center, Department of Latin American Art, is home to one of the best Latin American art collections of pieces produced between the 1600s and the 1800s.
Adds Reidy, “Different mediums used as an exhibit are important to the eye. They educate about a time period, are interesting and thought provoking. All pieces should work well together, work with the interior design and work comfortably as one, such as playing with color or exploring abstract versus realism. Look for a continuum.”
Jason DeMarte, who is best known for large-scale, highly detailed photo assemblages of flora and fauna that explore the natural world and its relationship with us, is currently one of her favorites. Reidy admires Linda Fleming, a sculptor and professor at the California College of the Arts who is continuing to work into her 80s, and she has recently commissioned for a client Kim Dickey, ceramic artist and professor of ceramics at CU Boulder.
The key to curating an art collection for your home lies in the emotions it evokes. Consider how you want guests to feel when they step into your space. And just as importantly, how do you want to feel every time you walk through the door.
Social media has transformed our inner and outer creative life most especially in how we communicate and share experiences. When we travel, we showcase our destinations to the world, prompting many cities across the globe to highlight their best through vivid murals, creating not just a photo memory, but a *moment.*
Over the past decade, Colorado Springs has embraced murals as an emphasis on artistic expression. Inspired by the city’s natural surroundings, including the iconic Pikes Peak and the red rocks of the Garden of the Gods, artists blend elements of local history and contemporary culture.
Fostering this street art movement has been the Colorado Springs Downtown Partnership, organizing mural festivals and supporting public art initiatives that aim to transform blank walls into colorful canvases that engage the community.
Meanwhile, in Denver, the street art scene has gained national attention, with the city becoming a hot spot for urban art.
The RiNo (River North) Art District is well known for its large-scale murals that cover the sides of buildings and alleyways. This neighborhood embraces street art as a form of expression, drawing artists and art lovers from around the world.
Artist Gus Rey starts the process of creating a mural digitally so he can scale it to be the dimensions of the wall. He explains that a lot of the process is trial and error and he’s missed the mark many times. Once he has his wall he goes through a process called a doodle grid where he doodles on the wall where different elements of the mural will go.
“This way let’s say the color orange is in the mural three feet from the top of the wall. I’ll add a doodle where the orange color needs to be,” he says. Some artists choose to trace out the full design and color it in. It usually takes about a week to complete a mural. His favorite mural was a collaborative piece he did in RiNo with Graham Carraway.
“It’s a giant snake and we made it up as we went. Making designs up on the fly is outside of my comfort zone. We figured out the colors we wanted to use and painted some stuff, but didn’t like it, so we changed it and it kind of went from there,” Rey explains. . “Snake Attack” can be seen in the RiNo Arts District, along with over 200 murals by local and international artists.
“It’s Not What You Take, It’s What You Bring Back,” is the newest DIA installation, created by local artist Thomas “Detour” Evans. Located in Terminal B near Gate B60, this display of luggage painted in the colors of Colorado’s sunrises and sunsets was inspired by the endless journey we are all on, with luggage carrying the items we hold dear.
“Finding out that I was being awarded a large public art commission at the third busiest airport in the nation and the sixth busiest in the world was amazing. It meant a new direction in my art practice,” said Evans. “I’ve never worked on a project this large, so it’s been a constant lesson for me. It was also a great opportunity to bring in the public as contributors of the art process because I wanted to utilize actual upcycled items in the work.”
Made of 183 upcycled pieces of luggage donated by Colorado residents the shape of the sculpture is inspired by the idea of life being in perpetual motion, as well as the 24hour nature of airports—specifically DIA, the sixth busiest airport in the world. The upward motion of the infinite loop resembles takeoff and landing during dawn and dusk.
Public art installations—sculptures, murals, and functional art—often become defining symbols of a city, like “The Bean” in Chicago. Denver boasts a dynamic collection of public art that is surprising, innovative, and diverse.
Denver International Airport (DIA) has an extensive public art collection used to connect a local and global audience, showcasing the uniqueness of Colorado and the diversity of the City of Denver. The most famous art installation is likely the well-known “Mustang” by Luis Jiménez. This 32-foot cast-fiberglass sculpture greets guests as they exit the airport. Jiménez drew inspiration from the magnificence of Mexican muralists, highlighting the energy of the Southwest.
“It took a while to create a concept because I wanted to ensure that each decision was truly thoughtful and showcased the best of Colorado to those living within our state, as well as those visiting,” said Detour.
Detour is proud of the fact that the building blocks for this piece came from individuals who have made Colorado great. Regardless of what community you are part of, there is something we all have in common— being on a journey and carrying the items, and adventures that are important to us.
“The idea for “It’s Not What You Take, It’s What You Bring Back” was born out of my desire to connect with the community as much as possible. I peeled back the idea of life being in perpetual motion, with luggage and bags carrying the items that we hold dear,” said Detour.
“I like to focus on the simplicity of clean and white backgrounds with natural colors from the dish starting with pure ingredients and incorporating the depths of color attained through cooking and technique, such as wok char, slow roasting or caramelization.”
As Colorado makes its mark on the culinary roadmap, food as art creates a cultural and creative experience that goes beyond subsistence. Transforming ingredients into visual masterpieces allows each dish to tell a story through color, texture, and form. Today’s chefs want to create harmony and balance, carefully selecting each component.
This attention to detail has helped several restaurants move from food truck to brick-and-mortar locations, such as Yuan Wonton. This former mobile dumpling food truck is now a full-service restaurant located in Park Hill, a neighborhood chosen for the overall support of small and local businesses in the community, which has been tremendously supportive of the restaurant from the beginning.
Chef and Owner Penelope Wong likes to make an impression when preparing a dish by looking at the presentation. “I truly believe the eyes eat first. The overall experience of taste does come second — but it also solidifies the visual appeal and the innate beauty of the dish as the true experience,” says Wong.
For the third time, Wong was recently named as a James Beard Awards semifinalist for Best Chef, Mountain Region for 2025. When asked how it felt to be nominated for a third time, Wong says it feels as unbelievable as it did the first year. “We’ve seen several newcomers to the culinary scene as of late, with so much talent across the board that I truly was not expecting to see my name on that list again,” she said.
Art takes many forms but never settles; in both private and public spaces, it elevates the human experience. Art makes everyday surroundings more engaging and thoughtful, while offering a visual language that transcends words.
