Homes are being built for greater energy efficiency, and are more air tight but mechanical ventilation systems have remained almost unchanged. Homes are built with synthetic, man-made building materials, furnishings, and cleaning products all of which release pollutants into the air, for example: • Mold, mildew, pollen, dust mites, animal dander, bacteria, and viruses. • Radiation from naturally occurring radon, electromagnetic radiation from wiring and electrical appliances, and radioactive waste in some smoke detectors and compactfluorescent lamps. • Gases that are released by synthetic and man-made products; formaldehyde, hexane, toluene (because outgassing decreases with time, older houses often have lower levels of VOCs than new houses) So, we end up with pollution-filled houses that don’t have enough fresh air. The result is often ill health. Links in studies have found the following diseases; chronic respiratory disease and lung cancer, cataracts, tuberculosis, adverse pregnancy outcomes, in particular low birth weight, ischaemic heart disease, nasopharyngeal, laryngeal cancers and increases the risk of pneumonia among children less than five years of age. 1. Insulation a. Utilize insulating concrete forms (ICFs) not only extremely energy efficient but they do not emit V OC (volatile organic compounds) b. If you want batt-type insulation, try a new product made of recycled blue jeans. UltraTouch Natural Fiber Insulation® by Bonded Logic is safe to handle and install, contains no formaldehyde binders, and provides better acoustics than fiberglass. c. Other no-tox, high R-value solutions include cork and wool. 2. Install high efficiency windows with excellent ventilation qualities a. Natural light is important to healthy living, vitamin D; good mental health b. Provide fresh air – lowers asthma issues. c. Utilize thermally broken multiple panes of aluminum-framed windows which have low offgasing. Ensure they have low e and are argon filled for efficiency.

Gypsum-based drywall (also known as Sheetrock®) is often not a healthy material for two reasons: (1) Adhesives and joint compounds offgas irritating fumes (including formaldehyde), and (2) Ddrywall is subject to moisture damage and mold. A less toxic solution is drywall primed with specialty paint or primer to seal off toxic fumes, and joined with no-tox joint and texture compound, such as Murco M-100 Ni-Po, made with inert fillers and without formaldehyde and preservatives. 1. Green alternatives to drywall: a. Veneer plaster is simply a layer or two of plaster installed over special drywall for a smooth, seamless, and impermeable finish. Plaster has the added advantage of blocking VOC offgassing. b. No drywall. Install wood beadboard walls; traditional, classic modern wood paneling right over wall studs. FSC certified of course. c. EcoRock drastically reduces the quantity of indoor air contaminants over any other drywall. EcoRock generates 60% less dust, and presents no negative effects of airborne mercury 2. Use paints and finishes with low to no VOCs a. Paint walls and ceilings white to let light bounce around, so lights are used less; a bright space will in turn make you feel better. 3.
