MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings, As I sit here; October 10, 2021, thinking about the weather, there just ain’t much to complain about. Yes, I was swatting bugs two weeks ago at a football game, but it was sixty degrees today and not as many pesty bugs. I will give up twenty degrees to get rid of bugs. I had a great dining experience a week or so ago. I had a Hereford sale in Mauston, Wisconsin, after looking through the sale cattle and snacking on a little beef, I got invited to a fish place. I will probably catch flack for this, but I really do enjoy a good piece of fish, and I will catch more flack for this, I ordered blue gill. All I can remember about blue gill is you throw them back in the lake. I never dreamed it would be on a menu, guess I lead a sheltered life. The other thing that I have not had for years is

potato cakes. Years ago, mom use to make what she called potato pancakes, deadly good fried in butter with the crispy stuff around the outside. Yep, that’s what I had for the night, blue gill, and potato cakes. Great fish, and potato cakes, and great friend’s awesome adult beverages. It doesn’t get better than that. Peggy and John Meents, Jeff Maas, thanks for a great evening at “Shipwreck Bay” Mauston Wisconsin. Grandkids. As the old saying goes, grandkids are the blessing you get for saving your own kids. Grandma and I just love going to see our grandkids participate in all their sporting events. Tucker plays high school football at Creston, Izzy plays volleyball, runs cross country, track, and basketball at Nodaway Valley, Tator is in volleyball, and basketball in Creston, Indy is in soccer in Greenfield, Max and Michael are in flag football in Greenfield. I have seen more gyms and football fields than I ever did with my own kids, by far. One constant that I have noticed, other than my grandkids are all good athletes, is the fact that they all have concession stands. Ol’ Mike likes to eat. The other constant is they all have hot dogs. I’m sure some of you are thinking ol’ Mike ain’t going to write about a hot dog is he? Yep, I am. They must all get them from the same supplier, and after quizzing the grill masters at a couple of games, they claim that they are all-beef hot dogs designed for concession stands. I haven’t had a bad one yet. Creston concession stand is

still the best, they have those special hog dogs and usually have little ribeye steak sandwiches and real hamburgers. The bad part about Creston concession stand is everybody there knows they have good food so the line is about a half block long. At the last game, you would have thought there wasn’t any other food in the country, it stayed a half block long the whole game. As we were leaving, there was still a line. Concessions at their best. All of us at LPI want to wish everyone a blessed Thanksgiving, a very Merry Christmas, and the happiest and most prosperous New Year. Please keep our troubled country in your thoughts and prayers along with all our military men and woman. It is with great sadness that I report the passing of one of the great matriarchs of Southwest Iowa. Phyllis Nichols, the quiet lady in the background of Nichols Farms. Genetically, she was bred to be a true livestock lady from birth, and then married into one of the largest seedstock families in the United States. Phyllis you will be greatly missed by everyone that knew you. Rest in Peace Phyllis. Mike Sorensen Family & The Livestock Plus Crew

Phyllis Ellen Nichols, 77, of Anita, passed away Sept. 23, 2021 at her home. She was born June 20, 1944. Phyllis met her future husband Dave at the Adair County Fair while helping their younger brothers and sisters fit their steers. Her brother, Lans, won Grand Champion and Dave’s sister, Evelyn, won Reserve Grand Champion. Phyllis exited Iowa State University in May of her junior year because of “the best sales pitch Dave ever gave.” For the first half of her married life, she calved 150-200 first calf heifers, and had her own flock of Montadale ewes. Soon after she had babies of her own, she dispersed her flock of sheep. After the death of Dave’s brother Lee in 1982, Phyllis became a full time owner/manager of Nichols Farms, along with Dave and Lee’s wife Lillian. Phyllis paid the bills, paid the taxes, issued the payroll, deposited checks, printed invoices, signed checks, handled insurance coverage and claims and purchased cattle supplies. She enjoyed interacting with the Nichols crew, customers and visitors. She was a great cook, active in many community service projects and known as the “hostess with the mostest.” Survivors include her husband of over 50 years, Dave Nichols; children: Fletcher Nichols and Jennifer Nichols; brother Lans Gibbs; sisters-in-law Edy Hill and Lillian Nichols; several nieces and nephews and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents: Audra and Marcella (Sally) Gibbs, Dave’s parents: Merrill and Gladys Nichols; sister –in-law Ev Gibbs and brothersin-law Art Hill and Lee Nichols. ~ by Jennifer Nichols

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Cattle and Grain Producers

Boxed Beef markets have fallen substantially and yet Cash Fat Cattle have been stabilizing for some time now. Now, if Boxed Beef simply moves back up half way to the highs of the year and meat packers get short bought for the next few months then you can in the weekly chart below see that the Fat Cattle cash market and Dressed market has substantial upside.

by Michael Seek Fox Group at the Board of Trade

Bitcoin should have your attention as you go about your livestock business day to day and month to month. Bitcoin has been called ‘digital gold’ and this market has become a very important asset class for those who understand the risk of loss. However, you do not have to trade Bitcoin to understand the value of this asset class as a livestock tool for your sale barn and cattle on the dirt operations. Take a look at the dual window chart below that shows a flat out amazing correlation all year between Bitcoin and Fat Cattle prices. Our guess on the fascinating correlation? Inflation and inflation and more inflation coming and the printing of trillions of US Dollars that are nothing but rubber money and backed by nothing but the good faith [wink] of the liberal establishments that run too much of the world and want more of the insatiable power.

Bitcoin has been strong as an ox and if it can be this strong when the US Dollar has climbed this year then consider that Bitcoin may soar into oblivion if and when [and it is when] the US Dollar goes south. Let’s be clear. Bitcoin and cryptocurrency trading is not being advocated here as a trade or hedge tool for Livestock Plus magazine subscribers, but rather being advocated as a technical tool to help you see where inflation expectations are presently and where said inflation appears headed. The best advice for you? Call Michelle White at our office here in the Chicago Board of Trade and talk with us for 15 minutes in the afternoon or evening to educate your family or team of livestock operations. Michelle can be reached at 312.756.0931

Now look at the US Dollar weekly chart below and notice that the US Dollar is pushing the high this current year and if it is virtually impossible for the USA to pay back the near 30 Trillion Dollars of debt then it will need to be inflated away and this would surely demand a crushing of the US Dollar to force it down and inflate away the debt. There are many ways for livestock operations to hedge inflation from corn to livestock to metals to diesel on the transport side. FYI

Beef Cattle Vaccination Programs

disease history, biosecurity, management, housing, and other factors, affect the specific vaccination programs in any beef or dairy operation. Type of vaccine, such as killed or modified live, stage of production, costs, benefits, and other factors must be considered. Rigid recipes that fit all production units are impractical and even dangerous if not instituted in individual herds with professional care. Improper use of vaccines can result in cattle that are not adequately immunized. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS WHEN DESIGNING A VACCINATION PROGRAM Antiserums are made from the blood of animals that are hyperimmunized to a given disease. They contain antibodies against that disease and afford immediate protection. They are of relatively short duration, usually providing protection for only two or three weeks. Antiserum is given in fairly large volumes, is usually expensive, and is not available for many infectious diseases. It is usually used in the face of a disease outbreak such as enterotoxemia in nursing calves. Some vaccines are produced by modifying the infectious agent in such a way that the organisms remain alive, multiply, and produce immunity in the vaccinated animal, but do not produce disease. Many modified live viral (MLV) vaccines should not be given to naive pregnant cattle because they can invade the fetus and cause birth defects or abortion. Examples are injectable modified live infectious bovine rhino-tracheitis and bovine virus diarrhea vaccines. Modified live vaccines generally produce a higher level of immunity than killed vaccines, but may have a degree of risk when given to either pregnant or highly stressed cattle. Vaccines are often ineffective at eliciting new antibody production when given to young calves. Very young animals

https://www.extension.iastate.edu/ Introduction Infectious diseases threaten beef and dairy cattle health and welfare and can decrease productivity and profitability. Vaccination is an important component of control and prevention of these diseases. A vaccination program, however, is not a substitute for good nutrition, adequate ventilation, effective sanitation, and other health management procedures. Vaccines help prevent infectious diseases, but no vaccine provides 100 percent immunity for all animals in a herd. Vaccines raise the general level of herd immunity so that the spread of an infectious disease or severity of clinical illness is minimal. Vaccination programs should be developed in cooperation with the herd veterinarian. Individual herd circumstances, including

The livestock industry lost one of the great Angus minds on October 2, 2021. It is with great sadness that we report the death of Evan Rayl. Over the years Evan and I spent countless hours talking Angus genetics and the livestock industry in general. Evan wrote many, many articles for us at Livestock Plus, Inc., and he will be missed by many. Rest in Peace Evan. Mike Sorensen & Family & The Livestock Plus Crew

A fond farewell.....

Marion Evan Rayl was born October 17, 1935 to Ferol Rayl and (Pluma) Bernice Evans, in their home in rural Afton, Iowa. He passed away peacefully on October 2, 2021 at Luther Park Trinity Center Community in Des Moines at the age of 85. Evan was raised on his parent’s farm in rural Afton and graduated from the Afton High School in 1954. Evan was active in 4-H and the high school yearbook staff and played baseball while growing up. After high school, Evan attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1958. He worked for the Adair County Extension Service in Greenfield, IA one summer where he met the love of his life, Shirley Jean Queck. They were married on Monday, October 17, 1960; Evan’s birthday. That day was also Shirley’s grandfather, Charlie Queck’s birthday, and the anniversary of her grandparents, Charlie and Oteilie Queck. In August of 1962, their daughter Renae Jean was born. Two years later in August, their first son, Thomas Evan, was born. Steven Evan was born in March 1970. He served as a 4-H leader for 10 years, starting the Summit Superstars Boys Club in Adair County. He was always their biggest fan and loved being grandpa to his five grandchildren and great-grandson. His proudest moments were watching them participate in their activities and was especially proud to have three grandsons who all achieved Eagle Scout. Evan had several entrepreneurial pursuits, the most notable being Iowa Star Silos and Rayl Farms. He was also a gifted writer and storyteller, regularly contributing articles to Livestock Plus. It has been said that he was one of the greatest Angus minds in the country. In 2000 and 2001 he served as the President of the Iowa Angus Association. Evan was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle, Immanuel Lutheran in Greenfield, Immanuel Lutheran in Adair, and a charter member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Adair. He and Shirley were members of the Stock Shufflers Club in Adair.

"Vaccinations" continued from pg 42

have a functional immune system that can respond to vaccines or antigens but is immature compared to older animals and may not be able to respond to the vaccine or antigen as effectively. Antibodies acquired from the dam through colostrum that protect the calf from many infectious diseases also may block and destroy the antigens in the vaccine. This phenomena is referred to as maternal antibody interference and is a potential reason for not vaccinating very young calves against some infectious diseases. However, there are vaccines that can produce an effective immune response, even in newborn animals. Consult with your veterinarian regarding the use of vaccines in animals less than 4 to 6 months of age. VACCINATION PROGRAMS FOR BEEF COW-CALF HERDS Neonatal Calves Vaccines containing bovine rotavirus and bovine coronavirus can be given orally to newborn calves. The oral MLV vaccine should be given prior to ingestion of colostrum or it will not be activated. Many veterinarians prefer to use injectable rotavirus/ coronavirus/E. coli in the dam prior to calving and depend on colostral antibodies to protect calves. Vaccination of calves for infectious bovine rhino-tracheitis (IBR), bovine virus diarrhea (BVD), parainfluenza-3 (PI-3), and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is usually delayed until pasture turnout or pre-weaning. Veterinarians occasionally advise use of this vaccine in selected herds with a history of these diseases in young calves, but this is not a standard recommendation. Vaccination of neonatal calves with an intranasal IBR/PI-3/BRSV vaccine may be more beneficial than standard injectable vaccines in young calves. Pastured Beef Calves Clostridia Calves are usually vaccinated for the major clostridial diseases prior to pasture turnout with a 7-way clostridial vaccine. Some clostridial vaccines can be given to newborn calves but immunity will be improved if vaccination is delayed until branding or grass turnout. The Clostridial diseases include: • Clostridium chauvoei—Blackleg • Clostridium septicum—Malignant edema • Clostridium perfringens—Enterotoxemia (types B, C, and D) • Clostridium sordellii—Sudden death • Clostridium novyi—Sudden death • Clostridium haemolvtica—Redwater occurs in limited endemic areas associated with liver flukes and is uncommon in the Midwest and is not included in a standard 7-way clostridial vaccine. Pinkeye In some herds, pinkeye is a continuous problem for calves during summer grazing season. Vaccines, either commercial or autogenous, generally have poor efficacy. Vaccination of cows or neonatal calves is not rewarding as colostral immunity is depleted or neonatal calves do not respond well. To be most efficacious pinkeye vaccines should be given when calves are 3 to 4 month of age prior to maximum risk of disease in midsummer. Pre-weaning vaccinations Producers who intend to retain ownership of their calves or desire to market preconditioned calves should vaccinate 14 to 21 days prior to weaning. The stressful weaning period is avoided so that calves have a better immune response and immunity is developed to respiratory disease prior to weaning, when risk is highest. This program also should be performed on "Vaccinations" continued on pg 56

all replacement heifers that are to be kept in the herd. There are many MLV vaccines approved for nursing pregnant cows as long as the cow has been previously vaccinated. • IBR (infectious bovine rhino-tracheitis) • BVD (bovine virus diarrhea) • PI-3 (parainfluenza-3) • BRSV (bovine respiratory syncytial virus) • Mannheimia haemolytica • Histophilus somni • 7-way clostridia vaccine

Erle 319-668-2082 Office 319-668-2026 • Mobile 319-430-0820 Weaned Calves Ideally calves should receive a second vaccination against IBR, BVD, PI-3, and BRSV after weaning. Calves that did not receive pre-weaning vaccinations should be vaccinated at weaning although the immune response may be decreased due to the stress associated with weaning. As part of an overall health program calves should be treated for parasites at this time. Pre-breeding (beef cows and heifers) • Vaccination for viral reproductive diseases (IBR and BVD) using a MLV vaccine 45 days prior to breeding is best time to provide protection for the cow herd. Replacement heifers should receive three vaccinations (pre-weaning, weaning and pre-breeding) with a MLV IBR and BVD virus before their first breeding season. • Pre-breeding vaccination for vibrio and leptospirosis (5 strain) is optional for well managed beef herds. Producers who only handle the breeding herd once per year should perform lepto vaccinations in the fall when cows are pregnancy tested. The pre-breeding vaccinations should be done approximately 5 to 6 weeks prior to breeding to avoid any possible vaccine induced stress or complications that could affect fertility. Pregnancy testing (beef cows and heifers) Booster vaccinate cows and heifers if not vaccinated prebreeding for: • BR, PI-3, BVD, BRSV. Generally killed vaccines are used in pregnant cows. Some MLV are approved for pregnant cows if the cows have been vaccinated previously with that vaccine. Consult with your veterinarian before giving MLV vaccines to pregnant cows. • Leptospirosis vaccines should be boostered in herds that have a history of abortions due to leptospirosis, have high risk of lepto exposure, or are a confined beef cow operation. Pre-calving Rotavirus, coronavirus, and E. coli—Scours vaccines should be given to replacement heifers twice, approximately six and three

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit and Annual Meeting to be Held In Person The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association invites you to attend the Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit & Annual Meeting. This year’s event will be held December 15-16 at the Meadows Events Center at Prairie Meadows, in Altoona, Iowa. Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Peter Shinn will kick off the event on December 15. His presentation, “Military Conflict for Agriculture Professionals,” stems from an extensive career in the U.S. Air Force and agriculture industry. Attendees will also have a chance to sit in on educational sessions, covering time sensitive topics.

Committee meetings will take place in the afternoon, giving producer members an opportunity to provide input on various policy topics affecting Iowa’s cattle industry. The program will conclude on December 16 following the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council annual meetings. Early bird registration runs through Friday, November 19. Register online at www.iacattlemen.org. A room block has been set aside for members. Hotel reservations can be made online at https://bit.ly/3nJFbLM. To receive the group rate, you will need to make your reservation by November 14. Below is the group rate information: Delegate Code: 542271

ICA Submits Comment on USDA Investment in Meat Processing On August 30, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association submitted comment to the U.S. Department of Agriculture regarding the Biden Administration’s investment of $500 million to meat and poultry processing infrastructure. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association used this request for information as an opportunity to highlight several issues within the meatpacking industry, including: lack of competition, consolidation, and demand for skilled labor. “The oligopsony in the beef meatpacking sector must be addressed immediately, and adding new competitors to the market may assist in providing opportunity for independent cattle

producers.” “As USDA evaluates proposals for funding within this sector, it’s important that an emphasis be placed on adding competition that will ultimately soften the unintended market forces that have strengthened due to consolidation within the beef packing sector over several decades.” “Our industry does not operate seasonally—we produce cattle and beef throughout the year. We need an H-2A program that aligns with our industry; the program should be year-round with consideration to lift the cap on visa holders.” Additionally, the Iowa Cattlemen’s

Association recognized our own state’s investment in processing through the Butchery Innovation and Revitalization Fund and program administered by the Iowa Economic Development Authority and Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Iowa’s daily slaughter capacity is significantly less than our fed cattle production. The demand for additional packing capacity is needed at both local and regional levels. Joint efforts by state and federal governments to improve meat processing infrastructure will provide the best possible outcome for all sectors of the beef supply chain. IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Joining the Herd We’ve used the term, “Join the Herd,” for the past year or so, but do you really know what it means to be a part of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) herd? ICA is the only grassroots cattle organization in the state providing producers with assistance to support their legacy. That means we are a membership organization working for our members from the ground up. We want to hear what’s important to all of you as members, and we want you involved at the local, county and state levels to help improve our cattle industry. This includes cattle market reform, environmental regulations, tax policies, risk management, and cattle health and nutrition, just to name a few. Getting involved starts with becoming a member of our herd.

The 2022 membership recruitment process has begun and we are looking forward to a great year ahead. We will continue the membership recruitment grant program. This will give counties the opportunity to apply for funds to hold events or set up projects to build membership locally. Several counties took advantage of this new program in 2021 to increase local involvement and membership. Also continuing from 2021 is the county membership incentive program. These cash awards will be given to counties excelling in membership recruiting. We will start with Focusing on Friends, which will award the top four counties for recruiting the most new friends of the industry members from October 1 to December 1.

The second incentive program is the Producer Roundup, with the top four counties awarded for recruiting new producer members from December 1 to February 1. The last county incentive award will be the Final Cattle Drive, which will reward four counties using a formula combining total new members recruited, the percentage of member renewals and the percentage of fair share paid. Individual membership awards will be given to the top five recruiters of total members and total new members. These awards will include a gun to the top recruiter in each category, followed by farm signs, lick tubs, coolers and ICA swag. We greatly appreciate the work each county and individual recruiter puts into building our herd.

Balvin-Gropper Named “I Am An Iowa Cattleman” Photo Contest Winner The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association would first like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s “I Am An Iowa Cattleman’’ Photo Contest. We received over 150 photo submissions, which a panel of judges narrowed down for online voting purposes. The “Top 10” entries, receiving the most votes during the online voting period, advanced to the Iowa State Fair. Congratulations to the following individuals for placing in the “Top 10:” • Chelsey Hoakison • Emily Williams • Tess Mittag • Kealy Schaben • Lydia Grant • Melynda Balvin-Gropper • Mikayla VonBehren • Chelsey Smith • Jackie Thomsen • Brylee Sherer

Fairgoers overwhelmingly voted in favor of Melynda Balvin-Gropper’s photo, which featured her husband, Tony, and son, Kayson. Balvin-Gropper says her goal with photography is to “capture moments.” “My husband and son are in the picture,” Balvin-Gropper says. “The heifer was shown by our oldest son this past show season. We like to say this photo shows a family tradition being passed down.” Tony, a third-generation cattleman and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association member, grew up showing Chiangus. Melynda grew up on an acreage and assisted her father in taking care of rented farm ground. She also showed quarter horses. Tony and Melynda have four children: Ty (17), Colton (12), Kayson (3 ½), and Fallyn (2 ½). The family resides in Chelsea, Iowa and raises cattle and hay. “We are continuously improving our

herd genetics to produce superior cattle, to perform in both the commercial and show industry. We also have 40 laying hens that run free-range on our acreage,” Melynda says. “I started a new endeavor, raising bottle calves for young 4-H’ers wanting to start in the cattle industry.”

weeks prior to calving. Vaccinate cows once, three weeks prior to calving, or twice according to the same schedule as first-calf heifers in herds not previously vaccinated or in problem herds. Bulls IBR, BVD, PI-3, BRSV, and leptospirosis vaccines annually. Herds with a risk of Campylobacter fetus (Vibrio) or Tritrichomonas foetus (Trich) may benefit from an annual vaccination against one or both of these sexually transmitted diseases. VACCINATING FEEDLOT CATTLE Feeder cattle should be vaccinated after arrival in the feedlot. There are only very rare exceptions to this guideline. Generally, a single MLV vaccine is recommended for feeder calves unless special circumstances exist. High risk calves may benefit from an intranasal vaccine followed by a traditional injectable vaccine two weeks later. Vaccinations on arrival • IBR, PI-3, BVD, BRSV • 7-Way Clostridia (if calves have not previously received a Clostridial vaccine) • Histophilus somni (not normally recommended in large western feedyards) • Mannheimia haemolytica vaccination optional Authors Prepared by G. Dear Lord, Why do we wait for a holiday to thank you when you give us so much to be grateful for every day of the year? Thank you for never giving up on us even when we turn away from you. Help us to share that same grace with those around us—especially with our families when we get together. Remind us that, even when things keep changing in the world, your love and faithfulness are steadfast. Thank you for our families, our farms, our work, our health and the freedom to worship you. Thank you for your promise that nothing in all creation can separate us from your love. Amen. Pastor Steven Broers • 641-745-7648 Emmanuel Lutheran Church Fontanelle, Iowa

old saying goes “when in Missouri, do as the Missourian’s do.” That night, I walked into The Pear Tree. As soon as I sat down, my phone rang. It was Anthony Peoples telling me to look to my left, I looked and there were folks waving at me like it was old home week! The couple at the end of the bar were his parents. could have figured that out that fast. The Pear Tree covers all the bases: adult beverages, great waitress, and awesome food! Thanks Pear Tree, I had a great time!!! Next, I just had to get a Hereford fix. I had my Simmental fix at Buckles & Banners, got my Angus Fix at 3C Angus in Carrolton, MO, and the Hereford fix was at Reynold’s Herefords in Huntsville, MO to complete my weekend. I’m not sure why these folks don’t weigh 400 pounds. I started watching this guy cook as soon as I got there. As I would walk by, every little bit of my mouth was saying stop and eat some of this food and my belly sure Meier Family - Sorensen Family - Hubbard Family wanted to as well, but I kept my composure until almost 11:00. Marilyn Lenth kept telling me you can be More Food! 10-18-2021 the first to eat and maybe the rest will follow suit to get the line I had a heck of a weekend, kind started. I followed her orders. Just deadly is all I can say. That ol’ of full, but a great time was had by boy Tom Bell knocked it out of the ball park! Half pound burger, ol’ Mike! It started off in West Point, sautéed onions, real thick cut bacon, Iowa for the Buckles and Banners sale and for those that wanted it, melted and then on to Macon, Missouri. But, cheese. Then, he hand sliced potatoes before I left, I had to grab one more and deep fat fried them with seasoning little grilled steak for the road. THE Iowa Land Guy TEAM

October 2021

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

State Trends ($/Acre)

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com Hotter than a $2 dollar pistol! Land is on the move. There is an incredible amount of land that is changing hands. Generically speaking If you look at the age of the landowner in Iowa over the next 10 years, there will be 1000 acres per county that will change hands. Many people are wanting to sell with the possibility of changes in the tax law. Congress keeps moving the target but as of right now it looks like they will not get rid of stepped-up basis, or 1031. It is still being negotiated but, right now it looks like they are talking about a 5% rise in the federal capital gains.

Iowa Land Guy

It was said to me last week that all farmland that is being purchased is being subsidized by something else. Another job, other paid off farmland, PPP, MFP, inheritance, old money, and people moving other investments into farmland. I have younger farmers say, “there is no way they can make that cashflow”. They would be correct. To buy farmland in this market you will need to subsidize it with something. That being said, I don’t see us slowing down or the market changing so drastically that farmland will cashflow based off the merit of the crop for a new farmer. The Realtor Land Institute just published their survey that would align with all our numbers. They showed a 18% rise in farmland in the last 6 months and a 26.6% rise year over year. Results from the 167 Sales (18,355 acres) this last month have the average for the state at $10,809 high quality ground at $12,446/acre, and medium quality ground averaging $8,479/acre. Low quality ground has moved up at an average of $5,978/acre. Our Mission; Is to be your “Trusted Advisor”, Our obligation; is to market your farmland to the largest audience yielding you the most successful outcome! After three decades of building the L Bar L Angus cow herd, Todd & Donalyn Hasenauer have made the difficult decision to completely disperse the heart of the herd including all of the 3-6-year-old cows (2015-2018-models) plus all of the 2020-model bred heifers and an elite group of 75 head of 2021-born replacement heifers. This productive and time-tested cowherd was founded on a strong foundation of cow families including the B/R Blackcap Empress, Ruby of Tiffany, Easter Tulloch, Kildonan Erica, Lady Ida, Lantz Blackcap, Pride and Pratissia tribes. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is one that you won’t want to miss!

Greetings, 2021 turned out to be a pretty great year! Sales were great and everyone in agriculture is positively optimistic about the upcoming year! With all the negative things that have gone on in 2020-2021 one thing I’ve been super proud of is our Agriculture community and how hard working and resilient we all stayed! From my family to yours we hope you have a blessed holiday season and head into 2022 well rested and ready to attack the new year. God Bless, Austin, Sydney, and Jensen

What a time to be alive! For many reasons, but I am focusing on the positive. Sales this fall have been hot and the energy is high in the cattle world – and you deserve it! Times have been tough on our farmers and ranchers so let’s take advantage of times when it’s good. This is the time of year to be thankful for all that the good Lord has blessed us with. For us, it has been such a joy raising our little man, Cort Howard, in the same way that we were raised. He absolutely loves helping with anything outside especially when it involves cattle or the tractor! We look forward to many more years of instilling in him the ideals that we believe as caretakers of the land and livestock that God blessed us with. My prayers are with all of you throughout this holiday season. God Bless, Cody, Tamar and Cort Crum

Wow, 2021 sure did make this industry get fired-up! Great sales, incredible cattle and wonderful families I’ve had the chance to work with. Our family has seen more show rings around this awesome state of Iowa than I ever dreamt we would, but made a million memories along the way. Cheers to 2022, in all the promise it brings!

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas from the Peoples Family to yours. We wish everyone safe travels and many blessings this holiday season. Here’s to great company and good calving weather!

-The Tibken Family Tucker & Kim Tibken Landon, Logan & Layton

-Anthony, Amanda & Larkin Peoples

I would like to offer a sincere THANK YOU to all our advertisers and other contributors that make Livestock Plus a success. We couldn’t do it without you! We bid you a very Merry Christmas as well as success, happiness and endless blessings in 2022! - Linda & Al Luppen Ethan, Eric & Alyssa

I am thankful for the wonderful people I’ve met through Livestock Plus Inc. My goal has always been to help grow your business by advertsiing in Livestock Plus Inc. My hope is everyone stays healthy and safe. Here’s to a healthy and prosperous 2022 for each of you! -Brenda
