MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, How many folks in the Midwest are getting really tired of rain? Dad always told us never complain about moisture, well when your rain gauge has run over several times it’s a little much. I guess I just need a larger rain gauge. As most of you know, I never talk about politics in my comments, but when family is involved I guess it’s my right. My son Ray “Bubba” Sorensen is running for State representative district 20 (that’s all I will say about politics everyone has their own opinion, exercise your right to vote). Last Friday night Bubba called and asked if I would to go to a breakfast with him in Redfield, Iowa for a little politicking at six in the morning. How do you turn down an offer to get up way before chore time to drive 35 miles to eat breakfast (sarcasm)? What a surprise! The American Legion building was full and running over with folks that eat breakfast there every Saturday morning. One person told me that they had been doing this for many years, what a neat deal for that community. On to the breakfast. Most all of you all know how simple I am and days, good ol’1home cooking with food B&Bsome Equipment:Layout 9/19/12 10:28 AMreal Page 1 is just spe-

cial. When you enter this Legion building, a very pleasant young lady takes your order and gives out information on how this breakfast deal works. First, she goes through the checklist; style of eggs, taters, pancakes, and then meat. I had scrambled eggs, breakfast taters, and then three slices of the best bacon I have had for a while. They were prepared to perfection, not that paper-thin stuff, not fried to a crackling crunch, just perfect. Bubba ordered eggs, bacon, and then went out on a limb and ordered pancakes. They had to be a foot across the top and there were two of them! They were basically a full meal by themselves! (he got through about a third of them). Then you picked your drink of choice. Coffee was my choice, and as they say, it’s a bottomless cup. They kept them full. The breakfast dining area reminds me of the old school lunch room, very community oriented. Some very special people deliver the food to your table along with keeping your coffee hot and that group changes every week. The Raccoon River Drill Team was on duty the day we were there. The American Legion rewards the groups $300 for their help. It’s a great money-making opportunity for the youth groups and encourages local coummunity involvement. If you are ever in the Redfield area on Saturday morning, this is a must stop place. One of the best breakfasts you will ever eat, and an atmosphere so laid back even us outsiders felt comfortable. I want to wish everyone a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving. Please travel safe and be safe. Please keep our service folks and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you veterans for our freedom. God Bless

UPCOMING AUCTIONS 69 ACTIVE LISTINGS 665 TOTAL 734

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com When you start to think about selling your farm, make sure that you get all the data you can. Buyers are very educated investors and will do the diligence in valuing your farm before they make the decision to bid or buy. Make sure the company you choose to advise you on selling is one that has the data and the resources to effectively market your land and bring the top bidding buyers to the table.

Farmland prices for the month of September were back up. The Iowa Realtor Land Institute published the results on their by-annual survey. The results showed that farmland statewide has only dropped 1.7%. Harvest has started and yields that have been reported are better than expected. It is however, very wet and making it hard to get in the field. If you have a good, clean, tillable farm take it to auction and the highest prices will be realized. If you have a medium quality farm that has diminished farmability, we are seeing some lower prices depending on location. There have been a few no-sales, but we see them get put together for the asking price after the auction. I still believe we are in a good steady market. At the end of the day any farm is worth whatever the buyer is willing to give. The location of this farmland is the key factor that will net the seller more money. Different areas have different buying pools. Buyers can be different even in the same county. Most buyers have a type of land that fits with their program, location, equipment, farm-ability and budget.

Iowa Land Guy

Results from the 86 auctions this last month have the average for high quality ground at $9,236/acre and medium quality ground averaging $6,046/acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $4,659/acre. If you would like a No Cost farm valuation on your farm let us know, as we would provide one to you in an attempt to earn your business. Let us show you the data and potential marketability of your farmland. https://iowalandguy.com/what-is-my-farm-worth/ Remember the highest prices are always set at auction!

LOGGER BRUCE VINCENT TO KEYNOTE IOWA CATTLE INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP SUMMIT Agriculture and the logging industry have a few things in common. Both involve hard-working, knowledgeable caretakers of the land, and both are under attack by environmentalists.

Bruce Vincent, a 3rd generation logger from Libby, Montana, has seen the effects of “tree-huggers” first hand. Over thirty years ago, environmentalists began focusing on the logging industry and its perceived effects on endangered species and wildlife populations. The issue became more urgent when government regulations (the Federal Endangered Species Act) required

32

Livestock Plus Inc.

that grizzly bears be re-introduced to the area surrounding Vincent’s hometown. It was too late to change the legislation, so Vincent focused on integrating grizzlies with as little harm to the surrounding community and industries as possible. As pressures continued to mount, Vincent Logging, which once employed 65 families, was regulated out of business.

This experience lit a fire in him, one that he frequently urges members of the agriculture community to find within themselves. Environmental activists, he says, first targeted the logging industry, and now target agriculture, including the cattle industry. Vincent Logging is back on its feet, and Bruce now shares the lessons learned with others who make a living from the land,

November 2018

through speaking engagements such as NCBA’s 2018 Emerging Leaders Luncheon. Vincent’s first book, “Against the Odds: a Path Forward for Rural America,” was published earlier this year with co-authors Nicole J. Olynk Widmar and Jessica Eise. Iowa cattle producers have seen the effects of a misguided, misinformed public and government recently in our own backyard. Last year, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association helped pass a bill that strengthened Iowa nuisance lawsuit legislation, offering more protection for Iowa’s cattle producers. But with the ongoing battle over the Waters of the US (WOTUS) rule, controversy surrounding Iowa’s large livestock farms and the master matrix, and government entities competing with cattle producers for land, the need for advocacy combatting environmental activists is never-ending. Bruce Vincent will provide the keynote presentation at this year’s Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Dec. 6-7, sharing ways that the cattle industry can avoid the dire situation the logging industry found itself in just a few years ago. IOWA CATTLE INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP SUMMIT This year’s Leadership Summit will be held Thursday and Friday, December 6-7, at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa. A full trade show, policy development committee meetings, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation banquet and auction, as well as the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council’s annual meetings will also take place during the summit. Back by popular demand, this year’s Leadership Summit will feature a tradeshow! More than 50 vendors will be in attendance and breaks throughout the Leadership Summit will allow attendees ample time to peruse the offerings. The agenda and registration information can be found at www.iacattlemen.org. Vendors interested in taking part in the tradeshow should contact ICA at 515-2962266.

ANGUS BULLS performance tested & ready to go! OPEN ANGUS HEIFERS

SELECT GROUP OF COW/CALF PAIRS COMMENTARY

The Road Behind and Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

Cattle markets may look like they are tired and that Packers got the long end of the wishbone this last month or so and yes the sale barns have softened a bit for 6 and 7 weights in September and October but we must focus on the old adage that ‘demand is more powerful than supply’, however, the export data on beef from our United States to other countries is flat out amazing. Believe it or not the Fat Cattle closed up 5.15 cwt and Feeder Cattle futures on the Board closed up 8.30 cwt to finish the 3rd Quarter. ‘Walls of Cattle’ all through the 3rd Quarter? Sure doesn’t look or sound like the wall’s were really there. You have to admit that other countries must like the Sam Elliot voice over that constantly reminds the world….. ‘Beef, it’s what’s for dinner’. No one says it like Sam. And yet no one puts out high quality beef consistently like our country. You may have noticed that Gold [see chart below] has come to life this last month for the first time in half a year. Remember now, Central Banks have inflated their way out of the debt bubbles and troubles of many decades back in time. Why should we expect anything different this time. President Trump has done a wonderful job and for the first time since a guy named Reagan was President did and does what he said he would do. It might help if he did a lot less ‘tweets’ and focused on getting the ‘deal’ done with China to kick the global economy up two more levels whereby we have ‘win-win’ situations instead of China continuing to pile up trillions in currency reserves at the expense of the United States. Enjoy the inflation and raging demand for Beef and Cattle for several months. The charts below on Fat Cattle and Feeder Cattle show tremendous upside and when you have inflation and powerful demand for beef then watch out on the upside! Want to better know how to set up and use a powerful tool in your hedging shed called ‘Divergence’ for the hedging of your Cattle on your ranch? Call Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and she will set up a 10 minute conversation with you and the hedge team here at our Chicago Board of Trade office to help your ranch family or office staff utilize your iPhone or laptop or desk computers to set up the ‘Divergence Tool’ tracking and logs. Again, Cattlemen, be careful about putting on long term hedges on your Cattle on the dirt. The Cash Fat Cattle can go back to 130 faster than you think. Demand via exports and local insatiable demand from places like Texas Roadhouse. A deal between the U.S. and China on trade could light up Cattle prices more than you think. Take a look at the charts below and see why a picture is worth a thousand words and, if you are a bona-fide cattle producer or investor you can probably think of many times over the years that you wish you had hedged your Cattle on the dirt or simply taken the hedges’ off. If you would like to have another source of Cattle acquisition and trade analysis to cross-check your current livestock advisories and would like to receive it on a complimentary basis for 45 days [it includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and respective beef cutout valuations] then call Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and give her your email address and we’ll oblige. And remember, hedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT or CME instruments still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

FOR YOUR INFORMATION...

Tips to Winterize Your Cow Herd The fall is coming to an end and for most farmers the crops are harvested, the calves weaned, and cows are preg checked. This is a great time for farmers to make plans for the winter for the cow herd and if you take the time now to plan how to feed cow herd this winter, this can pay dividends in the spring and summer. So here are some simple tips to help winterize the cow herd. 1. Body condition score your cows. Weaning is great time to body condition score your cow herd. If you didn’t get this done, its not too late to dothis before there is snow on the ground. After the calf is weaned, this is the period when a cow’s energy requirement’s are her lowest and cows can easily gain body condition during this period. Therefore, for your young and thin cows this would the most economically time to put on some body condition prior to winter and calving. One of the most mismanaged groups of cows in the herd is the young cows (3 to 4 years old) and can often be overlooked and farmers should pay close attention to energy reserves of these cows. By feeding your cows now to have a body condition score of 5 or 6 calving could pay dividends in the upcoming breeding season, since body condition score at calving is highly correlated to postpartum reproductive performance. 2. Conduct a forage test on winter feeds. This can be valuable information to determine a winter-feeding strategy. This allow producers to match forages to right stage of gestation and age of animal. Energy and protein intake of the cow during gestation is critical not only to her performance but the development of the calf. If cows do not intake enough protein or energy, this could

56

Livestock Plus Inc.

lead to weak calves at birth, postnatal health problems, or poor growth performance. On the other hand, with rising feed costs farmers cannot afford to overfeed their cow herd. By knowing the quality of the forage, you can determine intake of feed instead of the cow, which will in turn save on feed expenses. 3. Make culling decisions. The easiest decision is to cull those cows and heifers which are determined open in the fall. Farmers can be tempted to give cows and especially heifers one more chance, but with rising feed costs can you afford to keep this unproductive females in the herd? There are several other factors to consider when making culling decisions. Unsound udders, lameness and poor mouths should enter the culling list. These could significantly impact the performance of the cow in the coming year. Disposition is another important factor in making culling decisions, not only for your safety but these cows can pass these traits to their calves and the calves are typically lower performing. 4. Decide on heifer replacement strategy. After making culling decisions, you can determine how many replacement heifers you will need. But some important questions to ask first are: Can you afford to develop your own replacement heifers? Or would you be further ahead to purchase bred heifers to replenish the herd? The heifer calves are another challenging group to manage in the cow herd, especially in small herds. This decision to keep or buy heifers is dependent on several factors such as current and future market prices, herd size, facilities, available labor, and economics. To decide what is the best strategy, producers should develop budgets and management plans for each option. 5. Estimate your winter feed needs. Now you have made the decision on what cows are being culled, how many heifers you plan to keep, and what is the quality of your feed resources, this will allow you to design your winter feeding strategy. First estimate, your winter hay needs and determine if you have enough forage on hand. If you estimate you are short on forage, the fall can be a more economical time to purchase feed than later in the winter or early spring. This is also a good time to purchase grains or by-products to stretch your winter forage supply. Reducing winter feed costs can have a significant impact on the profitability of a cow/calf operation, so planning a head can be beneficial to the bottom line. These are some simple tips to plan for the winter ahead for your cow herd, which can save time and money in coming months. If you would like more information on the tips outline here contact your local extension agent or leave a comment on the site. Where did the fall go? It feels like yesterday we were just in the heat of summer and praying for cooler weather and all of a sudden it’s here! For me, basketball season is here and every year I am anxious and excited to put the stripes back on and get out on the court. For you big college basketball fans out there, I don’t really have any big news for the upcoming season as far as rules are concerned. This is a no rules change year so no major differences from last year. Either way it should still be an exciting and fun season on the court! I am still learning more everyday about what it takes to put on a sale of your own. We are still preparing for our first online sale coming up on November 25th. I firmly believe that the auction method is the best price discovery method there is. One thing I can tell you for sure, if you are on the fence about doing one, be ready and prepared for a lot of work! I sure am looking forward to seeing all our hard work hopefully pay off here this month. We are without a doubt, proud of the calves we have this year and it’s nice to see the breeding we have envisioned over the past couple years come to fruition. Please don’t be afraid to reach out to any member of our LPI staff if you ever have any questions or concerns about marketing your cattle. I look forward to seeing you all here soon. Enjoy what is left of fall! God Bless, Cody

There is nothing like a beautiful, crisp, but also sunny, Fall day! We’ve had lots of activities since the the end of September. AKSARBEN, football, dance, farrowing show pigs, lots of homework and one of my favorites, celebrating Down Syndrome awareness month (October)!!! Tucker and Taylor are the first to want to educate and support their little sister in every aspect of her life! Treva is one lucky little girl with so many people to support, and love her! With the livestock industry having at least a couple of fabulous, up-and-coming livestock kiddos with Down Syndrome, I would like to hope people remember acceptance and kindness. I realize that when you don’t have a super fabulous kiddo like Treva or our friend, Thomas Hotz, you don’t necessarily research it like we do, but I’d like to just shine a little light on some things we care about. <<< Down Syndrome is also known as Trisomy 21 or T21 because Down Syndrome happens when a person has three, rather than two, copies of the 21st chromosome. LOVE doesn’t count chromosomes! <<< Don’t say you’re “sorry” our kids have Down Syndrome. There is absolutely NOTHING to be sorry about, our kids are a gift from God! <<< Did you know people with Down Syndrome will share some common features, but actually they closely resemble their immediate family members. Kids with Down Syndrome are just as beautiful as every other child! <<< People with Down Syndrome are smaller in stature. Girls average height is 4ft 9in and boys 5ft 2in. What they lack in size, they make up for in awesomeness! <<< Approximately 40-50% of babies born with DS will have some type of heart defect. But be careful they can steal your heart! ... I often forget this because Treva has not had heart problems. <<< Babies born with Down Syndrome have low muscle tone (known as Hypotonia) which is why it will take them a little longer to talk, walk and eat the same food as others. They work extra hard for every milestone, so forgive me if we celebrate a little excessively on things that come so easily to other kiddos. <<< Down Syndrome can be hard, but every parent of a child with DS love their kiddos for exactly who they are! <<< People with Down Syndrome aren’t “always happy.” They have feelings just like everyone else! <<< People with Down Syndrome can lead happy, independent and successful lives. Become TV stars, play in symphonies, learn to drive and even climb a mountain! Don’t count them out! <<< Approximately 1out of 700 babies born have DS, making it the most common chromosonal condition. To our family it was not a “risk” but more that we were darn LUCKY to be BLESSED! <<< In 1983, the average life expectancy of a person with Down Syndrome was a mere 25 years old. Today, it’s 60! <<< Down Syndrome does affect each individual differently, so please do not stereotype. Encourage kiddos with DS to be the best they can be! <<< Want to know WHY they call it Down Syndrome... it is named after John Langdon Down, a British doctor who fully described the Syndrome in 1866. I won’t say Treva’s first two years have been easy or the same as our oldest kiddos, but I will tell you that the “harder things” are okay because of her sheer determination and ornery little personality! I wouldn’t trade a moment with Treva, or any of my kids for that matter. I’m so grateful to all of my friends and family who

have been supportive and understanding with all the extra doctor appointments and her need of my constant attention! Thank you to Angela and Kyle Hotz for sharing Thomas with all of us, too! Thomas and Treva will be a FORCE some day in the livestock industry and I, for one, cannot wait! Please continue to keep our military and our nation in your prayers! I hope everyone will take the time to vote in the midterm elections! God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661.900.6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
