MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, Sale season is here and I have been down the road several thousand miles, already. Sales have been really good. As usual Randy, Austin, Cody, and myself are ready and willing to help you find the stock you are looking for. We are just a phone call away and the numbers are at the right of this article. I had a very surprising experience the other night as I was traveling near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I was making a few early herd visits and landed in the Best Western Ramkota. I checked in a little late so I threw my bags in the room and headed to Frankie’s Sports Bar and Grill. I knew in my own mind that if I ordered a steak, that I should not expect a great one, a good one maybe, but not great. Delphine my waitress got me an adult beverage to start with, and shortly came back for my order. I was kind of hungry for a steak, but all they had was a New York Strip and a 10 oz sirloin. Not wanting to spend a lot on an average steak, I ordered the sirloin, with a side of rice and a hit of asparagus. To my pleasant surprise,

Jason the chef, put together probably the best sirloin I have ever eaten. I just couldn’t believe the flavor, the tenderness, it was seasoned to perfection and grilled perfect. I actually ate it like it was my last supper. The asparagus was really good also and I am not an asparagus man. The rice is a new thing for me, my wife has tried to get me to eat rice for years with no success. Now I order rice instead of taters, must be a senior thing. Tiffany the night manager, Delphine, and Jason the chef, excellent job! I would recommend this place to anyone. Ramkota, north side of Sioux Falls, SD, try it when traveling through. It is with great sadness that I report Dean Archer one of my most enthusiastic readers passed away August 18th. Dean along with his wife Verlene have been family friends for years. Their daughter Angie and I were born just hours apart in the same hospital and we celebrated our birthdays for many years together, so I knew the Archer family very well. Every time I saw Dean and Verlene they would say, you can take us off your mailing list if you want, but we sure do enjoy every issue and love reading your article as well as Heidi’s. Dean always said I look at every page of that book several times. Rest in peace Dean, and Verlene you can read this article as long as you want you will never be taken off the list. Thanks for being those special readers. Be safe in your travels wherever they may take you. Please look through our publication, find your next great one. Then tell them you saw it in Livestock Plus. As always, please keep our service folks past and present and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

SELECT GROUP OF COW/CALF PAIRS

COMMENTARY

The Road Behind and Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

If you are a Cattleman then never forget that the most valuable tool on your ranch is the ‘Divergence Tool’. Everyone has it, but few use it consistently. The ‘Divergence Tool’ is the ability to do your homework each day after sunset and determine if the Cash and Board Cattle are diverging and ask why. For example, there are many weeks of sale barn activity or packer related Fat Cattle activity and based on that activity the Fats or the Feeders should have done this or that based on normal ratio’s and if they did not then you have a clear cut divergence and you’ll need to adjust your hedge account or put on hedges on your Cattle on the dirt or believe it or not scare your banker out of his wits and buy the short hedges back. Let’s say that low weight Cattle are 5 dollars per cwt. lower at the sale barn on a given week, yet the Feeder Cattle on the Chicago Board are up 1 dollar, then this is a divergent situation that is showing tremendous strength on the Feeder Board and the Board represents the future and thus hedges should be taken off or reduced by the integration of Put Spreads to give some protection, but not as much as normally used by the hedge account you use. There is also frequent ‘Divergence’ between the ‘Placements’ of Cattle on Feed report and net weekly changes on the Boxed Beef that do not line up with the Board. You may recall that the August Cattle on Feed report showed higher ‘Placements’ than expected and the following week also brought sharp drops in price on the wholesale beef market of cash trade on the vast array of choice beef cutouts and yet the Fat and Feeder Board traded Cattle closed up on the week. The record now shows that the Board Cattle went on to much higher ground on a break out that has rattled the companies that buy your Fat Cattle for the kill. The Board Cattle have now made a mockery of the purported ‘walls of cattle’ for August and September and have broken on the upside before the Trump team of our U.S. has even cut a deal with China on key trade issues. President Trump and his team on behalf of our United States is getting the last laugh on most all of the countries that have been taking advantage of our ‘generosity’ on import-export trade for decades while the previous presidents, both Democrat and Republican, sat by and did nothing to make a difference in the trade world that is so critical to livestock and grain producers in the Midwest. Keep up the good work, Mr.

32

Livestock Plus Inc.

President. Want to better know how to set up and use your ‘Divergence Tool’ for your Cattle ranch? Call Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and she will set up a 10 minute conversation with you and the hedge team here at our Chicago Board of Trade office to help your ranch family or office staff utilize your iPhone or laptop or desk computers to set up the ‘Divergence Tool’ tracking and logs. Cattlemen, be careful about putting on long term hedges on your Cattle on the dirt. The Cash Fat Cattle can go back to 130 faster than you think. Demand via exports and local insatiable demand from places like Texas Roadhouse to Outback to Morton’s has chewed through supply with ease. An inevitable deal between the U.S. and China on trade will likely add fuel to the fire. Take a look at the charts below and see why a picture is worth a thousand words and, if you are a bona-fide cattle producer or investor you can probably think of many times over the years that you wish you had hedged your Cattle on the dirt or simply taken the hedges’ off. If you would like to learn about some new hedging techniques that can be done in such a way that does not expose you to margin calls via nightly and weekend email and you would like to receive it on a complimentary basis for 45 days that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and respective beef cutout valuations then call Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and give her your email. And remember, hedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT or CME instruments still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

$10,000

Farmland prices for the month of August were chaotic. We are seeing farms selling from $80/csr – 120/csr with the biggest difference being location and neighbors. The USDA crop report was published with great optimism on the 2018 crop production. This set our grain markets into a downward motion. The low grain markets have farmers wondering if they should buy land. Last month we saw auctions where no farmers were bidding and only the investors put forth bids into the market. The low grain markets along with an influx of 64 farms coming to the market this month, I feel that the market is trending in a downward motion but not falling out of bed. Results from the 83 auctions this last month have the average for high quality ground at $8,456/ acre and medium quality ground averaging $6,121/ acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $5,298/ acre.

COMMENTARY

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

Are you proud of the country you live in? I worked a sale today that made me extremely proud. Before the sale began, we said the Pledge of Allegiance together as a group. And guess what, not one person in attendance took a knee, protested or offered any sign of disapproval. Why? Because we as a group of farmers, ranchers, cowboys, cattlemen and everything in between are proud of this great country and we don’t take it for granted. Is it because we all get along and have the same beliefs? Absolutely not! We have just as many differences as any other group except I think we all share 3 very important characteristics. First and foremost, we are PROUD. We are proud of what we do and we are proud of who we are. We are proud to be blessed B&B Equipment:Layout 9/19/12 10:28 AM Page 1 enough to grow up in this1 great country.

Secondly, we are COMPETITIVE. There are many people in this world that would think of being competitive as a bad thing, but we don’t. We compete with each other on a daily basis. Essentially competition is the root of what we do. There are no participation ribbons or trophies in our industry and there never will be. We do not like to lose, but we all have. Getting beat is one of the best things that can happen to us because that drives us to work even harder. Lastly, we LOVE. Don’t get all sentimental on me, but I am being serious. We love this business. We love our livestock and we love the people we work with. This world needs more people that can compete, disagree, argue and darn near fight but at the end of the day respect each other. I am proud to live in a country that allows me the freedom to make my own decisions and form my own opinions. I will always stand up and show my respect for all of those men and women who have sacrificed to afford me that right. I hope that we can continue to be a good example to the rest of this country. As the University of Wyoming would say, “The world needs more Cowboys.” I don’t think truer words could be spoken. God bless you and the USA, Cody

I hope everyone is enjoying the changing leaves, cool weather and my favorite fall thing, FOOTBALL! I’m not watching the NFL much, because I have a real hard time supporting anyone that doesn’t respect and honor our flag and our veterans. However, I still love college football (Iowa State) and my absolute favorite football, junior high Creston Panther Football! It’s been fun watching Tuck grow as a player and a teammate. Tuck said to me this last game day that he has a hard time concentrating during the day because he’s just so ready to play. That being said, I don’t think this football mom is much better at concentrating on game day, either! Next I have to say that watching my Baby T (Treva) discover and learn new things is inspiring! To say this girl gives her whole heart is an understatement. I get so overwhelmed and frustrated with how chaotic my life gets sometimes... until I stop and watch her try and try again at something that comes so easy to other kids her same age. With Down Syndrome, she will always have to work harder and longer, but I cannot even put into words the joy on her face and her constant celebrations of the little accomplishments. Recently, we got a little walker to help give her some confidence to take few steps on her own. It’s funny because she will take a few steps and then stop to clap for her accomplishment! Big sis is like an army drill sergeant, she celebrates but then it’s back to work... and do not worry about Treva for a moment because she absolutely LOVES having Taylor’s full attention! That girl lights up when Tuck and Tay get home! God gave us this beautiful, smart, funny little girl, I think, to remind us daily that no matter how hard life gets, you have to smile and celebrate the little things! Treva inspires me daily and watching the determination of her big sister and brother pushing her to be her best makes my heart so full as well. Have a fantastic and safe sale season! Please never forget our nation and our military in your prayers. “Treat a person as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat him as what he could be, and he will become what he should be.” - Jimmy Johnson God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig • 661.900.6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com

2016 DENVER GRAND CHAMPION SIMMENTAL

Calving EasE suprEmE.

Female

Purebred Simmental

Calving ease sire supreme. He is one of the easiest calving purebred Simmentals in the breed. The last 2 years we have had 60 heifers calve out of him and we have never had to pull a calf. They are very stylish and correct and have good growth, performance and eye appeal. Our cattle have to do a lot of walking so we are very fussy about good feet and legs. There is an epidemic of back curly toes and toeing out on the front legs in both Simmentals and Angus. He is the most correct legged bull we saw in Denver. He is sired by Duracell by Dream On and out of a daughter of Built Right by 3C Macho by Meyer 734. His dam was the Grand Champion Simmental female at the 2009 American Royal Show in Kansas City . Many of the bred cows and heifers in this sale carry his service. You Need to Try Him.
