MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings, I want to start this greeting in a positive way, but it’s just a little difficult. I think if we can keep God in our lives, say a prayer for this country, and the country's leaders, just maybe we can get it all straightened back out. Dixie and I kind of killed two birds with one stone the other day. We decided to take a little tour south and first visit our son that was painting a Freedom Rock in Chariton, Iowa. If ever in Chariton, you need to seek out the Freedom Rock, (it’s under the old water tower). Those folks have put together a military park that is totally awesome. I think every branch of service is represented and there is history scattered in that park that is really interesting. If you go for a visit, make sure you have some time, it will be worth it. We are proud of our son’s addition. I have some special friends in Albia, just 20 miles from where Bubba was painting. They just happen to be closely involved with a place that is called “Bogie’s Steak House.” I used to stop there like 3 or 4 times a year when the timing worked. I was impressed then and I’m still impressed now. Toni and Kevin Walters have run this place for years and are now slowly turning it over to grandson Jase; the younger generation of Walters, I’m pretty sure that it would have been turned over by now but I don’t think Kevin and Toni know any different than to go cook steaks, seat people and socialize every weekend. My consumption rate over the years has gone downhill, so I try to order accordingly. I have started ordering filets, a little more tender and a smaller portion, so that there is very little waste. I can tell you, Kevin and Jase still have it! They can grill steaks with the best of them. It was awesomely

prepared and seasoned to perfection, and I had no waste. The potatoes haven’t changed, fried potatoes and onion and God knows what else, but a farm boy’s dream come true. Toni, Kevin, Jase and granddaughter Courtney, you guys are still in my top five places to eat. Next on my adventures was the annual Livestock Marketeers golf outing. York, Nebraska was the location and man they have an awesome golf course. Just so that you have it clear in your mind, the last time I golfed was at The Marketeer’s Golf Outing 2019. I have not improved. I’m still just working on my drive and with luck, I can almost always make it past the lady’s tee box. Now, it’s a big help that I can tee off from the old people tee box. Just by luck, I happened to hit an iron like 163 yards, and it landed 2 foot from the pin, lots of luck involved, and also with lots of help lining it up I made a 30 ft put. A big thank you to Dick Carmichael, Robbie Schacher, and Jordan Hunter. They carried me for eighteen holes, and I appreciate their patience with my golf skills. Enough about golf! The steak supper on the first night of the outing was deadly. CAB steaks were provided by the Angus Association, and the chef that grilled them did almost better than a great job. A big thank you goes to the American Angus Association. Night two with the same chef preparing the CHB Certified Hereford steaks again did a superior job. A big thank you to "Greetings" continued on pg 12

"Greetings" continued from pg 4 the Hereford Association for those steaks. I’m not going to take sides, I really enjoyed both steaks. The preparation was deadly, the seasoning was perfect, both were tender and flavorful, and I’m good with both breeds. This outing is for auctioneers, sale managers, and field men. A great time was had by all, and the steaks were deadly. Thanks to all that were involved with putting this together. It’s just hard to not mention “The All Iowa Showdown.” The Showdown was held in Afton, Iowa at the Union County Fairgrounds. This year it was in a new facility that is second to none and it was basically filled to capacity. I’m guessing probably one thousand to twelve hundred people. The competition is unbelievable, let’s do the math: I believe there are ten districts. If each district has ten county fairs or shows that qualify with fifty head per show that’s five hundred head per district and ten districts that’s five thousand head and we pick one winner in each species from that five thousand. That’s a lot of sorting to come up with one. The thing I liked was country people shoulder to shoulder with country people having a good time with friendly competition; didn’t have any riots, and the kids were having fun. Believe it or not, one thousand plus people, during the national anthem, all stood at attention with their hands over their heart. Country people were brought up with values. PLEASE pray for our country’s leaders, please thank and pray for our police and first responders, and keep our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

ICA Continues to Push for Cattle Market Reform One of ICA’s top priorities over the past few years has been increasing price discovery through cash trade in other regions of the United States. The regional disparity in cash trade costs Iowa’s fed cattle producers $20 to $40 per head. For more than 5 years, Iowa’s leaders have been trying to work with other cattle industry leaders to find a voluntary, industryled solution to this problem. Although some ideas have been presented and attempted, none have had any lasting impact, and Iowans have suffered through market disruptions due to the Holcomb fire and COVID-19. Because of this, the ICA Board of Directors approved interim policy supporting a legislative/regulatory mandate on minimum levels of negotiated cash trade earlier this year. Since that time, our leaders and staff have: • worked with Iowa’s Senate and House delegation to craft “50/14” legislation that would mandate 50% cash trade by each packing plant and 14 day delivery periods. Sens. Grassley and Ernst as well as Reps. Axne, Loebsack, and Finkenauer have all signed on as sponsors for these bipartisan bills. • built a coalition of 19 other state cattlemen’s affiliates who support a legislative/regulatory solution. • worked with various national cattlemen’s groups to discuss and fine-tune legislation/regulation. • examined current research related to price discovery and cash trade, and attempted to access USDA data that could be used for further research.

NCBA POLICY:

The NCBA Summer Business Meeting in July was an important milestone in our efforts to create lasting reform. Our leaders, along with 19 other state affiliates, presented policy to the live cattle marketing comittee in support of a legislative/regulatory mandate on cash trade. Those opposed to our proposal agreed that more cash trade and price discovery is needed, but would not accept a legislative/ regulatory solution. Although our coalition included more state affiliates, the opposition had more voting delegates because of their increased investment in NCBA. After several hours of debate, both parties came to consensus on an amended policy, which was then approved by the voting delegates and NCBA officers. The policy includes 3 important points: 1. An industry working group (which will include Iowans) must agree upon minimum criteria for price discovery before October 1, 2020. 2. After Oct. 1, each region (under USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service) must meet the criteria determined by the working group. If criteria are not met, NCBA will support a legislative/regulatory mandate. 3. Legislative/regulatory mandates must include a 3-year sunset period so that their effects can be studied.

ICA’S REACTION:

This has been an important issue for our grassroots association for quite some time and will continue to be so. The policy passed at NCBA meets some of ICA’s objectives, and we consider it a step forward, but it is not a complete victory.

There is still much to be done to increase price discovery, and we are disappointed that a solution to this very urgent problem may be delayed once again. The longer that the price discovery discrepancy affects fed cattle producers across the U.S., the more likely it is to also deeply impact cow/calf producers. ICA will continue to work independently of NCBA on solutions.

ICA’S NEXT STEPS:

The NCBA policy decision does not change ICA’s advocacy efforts in any way. 1. We still support Sen. Grassley and Rep. Axne’s cash trade bills. 2. We will continue to explore other means of increasing price discovery. 3. We will stay engaged in the NCBA working group and continue to work with other state and national cattlemen’s groups.

Bull and Heifer Evaluation Program ICA is accepting reservation forms for the 2020-2021 Bull and Heifer Evaluation Program until September 15, 2020. With the legacy and reputability of this elite program, spots will fill up quickly. Reservations will be accepted on a first come first served basis with fee paid at the time of reservation. You will be notified at the end of the reservation period if your consignments were accepted to participate in this year’s test. Visit iacattlemen.org for more information and reservation forms.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

We Don’t Wait for a Crisis Burger King made the news (and made cattlemen furious) in July with a catchy jingle claiming that feeding cattle lemongrass could reduce emissions by 33%. Now, there are several problems with this claim, including the fact that Burger King focused on “cow farts” which makes for a cute tune, but aren’t actually the source of cattle emissions. Second, the research cited has not been peer-reviewed or replicated successfully in the United States. Despite these flaws, the advertising campaign has received quite a bit of attention. It seems that these types of public relations crises happen every few months, but you should know that sharing information about cattle production and its effect on the environment is a regular part of our work, whether Burger King is tweeting about the topic or not. The ad may have been targeting consumers, but ICA’s target audience is legislators and regulators who influence environmental regulations and formal efforts to change livestock production. Your ICA membership dues have been used many times throughout the past few months to ensure that a fast-food restaurant and young crooner aren’t the primary source of information about beef production. Here are a few examples:

ANIMAL AGRICULTURE DISCUSSION GROUP:

ICA staff and leaders take part in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Animal Agriculture Discussion Group, with a special emphasis on water quality and how cattle manure can be part of a sustainable food system.

DIETARY GUIDELINES:

The U.S. Dietary Guidelines are updated every five years, and in 2015, the advisory committee attempted to include recommendations related to the climate impact of foods. The beef industry (through the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association) was prepared for the 2020 revisions, and nominated “beef-friendly” advisory group members and submitted 21 sets of comments throughout the process. More information about the Dietary Guidelines can be found on page 33.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AWARDS:

Each year, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association nominates an Iowa cattle producer for the national Environmental Stewardship Award. This year’s nominees, the Euken-Myers family from Cass County, incorporate many practices that reduce their impact on the environment and greenhouse gas emissions, including improved farm efficiency and use of cover crops.

REGULATIONS:

ICA has been actively fighting attempts to increase regulations on livestock confinements at the county and state level. In late 2019, ICA staff, members, and our legal counsel attended multiple public hearings related to a proposed Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) that would change definitions, references, and requirements related to agricultural exemption in Johnson County. We worked to limit the county’s unnecessary overreach by citing and supporting current Iowa Code. ICA staff submitted comments on behalf of our members in opposition of changes to the

UDO that would intentionally or unintentionally limit the growth of animal agriculture in Johnson County. We also supported related legislation this year.

SOCIAL MEDIA:

After Burger King’s ad hit social media, we also responded with some posts of our own, sharing more truthful information about beef’s impact on greenhouse gas emissions. For example, did you know that according to the EPA, beef production only accounts for 2% of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.? And methane, the primary greenhouse gas created by cattle, has a relatively short natural cycle before being broken down again. Methane stays in the atmosphere approximately 10 years compared to carbon dioxide’s 1000 year life cycle. One thing you won’t see us do on social media, though, is share Burger King’s campaign. Our goal is to arm people with the facts, not draw more attention to falsehoods. Thanks to all of the hard-working cattle producers and researchers in the beef community, we have plenty of positive information to share instead.

COMMENTARY

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

After a long spring and summer – sale season is finally here! I am really looking forward to getting back out and about and seeing a lot of you this fall. It’s hard to believe I am approaching the finish line to year 1 as a dad. As many of you know, that first year is almost surreal but I wouldn’t change a single thing. It has been everything I iimagined and so much more. Cort is now walking and babbling about 90 words a minute. I am pretty sure he is already working on becoming an auctioneer! He loves every opportunity to go outside especially if it involves going on a ride or checking the cows. Needless to say, Tamar and I have not been short on excitement over this pandemic. It has been fun to have time as a family and watch our little man grow. With that being said, I am hopeful that we will get back to normal sooner rather than later. At least we finally have baseball back! I wish you all nothing but the best this fall and if I can be of any assistance don’t hesitate to reach out to me. God Bless, Cody

"Thank you to Mike Sorensen, his entire family, and the magazine for what you have done for the agricultural industry and the beef industry in the state of Iowa and even the United States. Also, thank you for your patriotism over the years." ~ Gene Doran

Results from the 20 Sales (1651 acres) this last month have the average for the state at $6,850 ($97/CSR), high quality ground at $8,395/ acre, and medium quality ground averaging $5,956/ acre. No matter what way you spin it, it has provided a lot of folks with challenges and some extra time to spend doing various chores or projects they put on the back burner. I have spent a lot of my “COVID 19” time in the barn or out in pastures working on said projects and listening to numerous livestock podcasts such as Chute Side, Stock Talk, and Genuine JBH to help pass the time. I feel there is always something to learn in every episode. Trevor and Cory from Stock Talk always incorporate a “Hats Off” segment that I thought would be really cool to incorporate into my monthly article. There is always someone or something in our lives to be thankful for and that deserves credit. I thought this would be a fun way to showcase one of those things. Going into sale season, I always think of different programs and “the brand” they encompass. There are a handful of programs and brands I look up to and study as I build my own brand. From very well established programs like the W/C, SS, Ruby, 1/5, V8, or EX brands to newly started programs with just a dream and a strong work ethic, I think your brand is always something you should be proud of and continue yb sretsis hsulf gnidnato tstubuild o owt upon. eht fo eAs no sai 0cattle 53 edirproducer P emadaM ot retsis ½ nevorp tsand om eenthusiast ht fo tuo gnimyself, lles tbuoD oN revooH I understand hsulf fo tes lufrewop a sjust ah oshow la 092important 5 edirP emathat daM brand .aciremisA to VAS a ekam lliw taheach t yrotprogram. irreT VAS To yb gme, nillesitsriseta sisconstant .margorp yna ot eceip gnidaerb taerg reminder of where we began and the direction we want to march on. look like a team in a hospital ward. The upside of many folks not going to the restaurants for some time to come is that they will buy the beef and probably more of it since the wallet goes further at the grocery store than it does at Ruth Chris and learn how to master ‘medium rare’ at home on their barbecues. The Choice USDA beef market has room to rally 15 to 20% and if it were to track and follow---play by Michael Seek, catch-up---with Gold and Copper then beef prices could Fox Group at the Board of Trade launch again and this time consumers at Kroger and Jewell Osco have already seen it and the shock would be not such a shock. Bottom line? Beef is ultimately what’s for dinner as What is the Federal Reserve talking about when they keep Mr. Sam Elliott powerfully reminds folks every few months on saying they need to see inflation of 2% or more before taking solace in the way they accommodate monetary policy? Take a radio spots. What’s good for beef usually is good for Cattle survey of lumber suppliers and you will see that key commod- producers. ity markets are showing tighter supplies and higher prices. If you are like most then you surely have interacted with some kinfolk who have been the recipient of free stimulus money deposited into their bank accounts [courtesy of the government]. The Fed has printed trillions and trillions of dollars in fiat money ‘not backed by gold’ and now has to figure out how to keep inflation from getting out of control and eating everything in its path. Notice down below that the Goldman Sachs Commodity Index has broken out to the upside and this helps explain the massive strength of Gold and Cattle markets too! Indeed the inflation that the Federal Reserve desires should help fuel Fat Cattle and Feeder Cattle to some lofty heights in the 18 months ahead, however, the United States Dollar looks like road-kill right now and history says if it gets up and runs that commodity markets will get spooked enough to correct and take a breather.

The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets

Let’s address the social distancing factor that has our own family not wanting to go to steakhouses anymore since the salad bar is not accessible and salt and pepper shakers have been removed by a group of waiters and waitresses’ that all

Only time will tell, however, if 1/4th of Iowa corn does not happen and China starts ‘honoring’ the US China trade deal and buys up Soy markets then Corn may have another catalyst for higher prices. The recent strength of the Corn and Soybean markets will now be tested by a rally in the US Dollar, however, if it passes the test and both key grains hold with resolve then we may have a roaring bull market on our hands and Cattle Producers who do not ‘feed out’ will need to strategically buy Corn on the Board to cross-hedge costs of production. The presidential election ahead looks like it will make the Bush-Gore slug fest of yesteryear look like tiddlywinks. One gets the feeling that they would literally like to wear old Jack Dempsey gloves and box it out on the alley behind a Washington, D.C. office. There are many things Mr. Trump could do to get red states excited about him staying for a 2nd term, not least of which is using Executive Order 12631 [signed by Reagan 33 years ago] to back-stop markets relevant to Corn, Bean and Cattle producers. Look for this to happen early to mid-October.

The Cattle and Grain markets may light up and make producers grin big for a year or so, however, the long-term cost of handing out trillions of dollars of money to people in the USA may come back to financially haunt the business plans of producers for years following 2022 and 2023. All of the foregoing back-drops and likely events in front of us all point to the need to hedge asset classes’ near and dear to your family or corporate grain and livestock operation. If you are already a bona-fide livestock producer you can probably think of many times over the years that you wish you had used airbags to hedge your hedge on your Cattle on the dirt or simply taken the hedges’ off. If you would like to get a new perspective on livestock hedging by integrating USDA wholesale beef pricing and you would like to receive on a complimentary basis for two full months by email both ‘Daily and Weekend ‘Livestock Reports’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and respective beef cutout valuations then call Michelle White at call her at 312.756.0931 and share your email address with her in confidence. Remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle futures still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee

As fall quickly approaches I can think of at least two really good reasons to be excited. The first is that it means 2020 is almost over. Hopefully we can put this year behind us and just get on with life. The second reason is it’s almost sale season. As we get calves weaned washed and clipped, I get more excited for the year to come. We have several heifers that have a ton of potential. I’m trying something a little different this year and offering up my top heifer from last year as a bred. We decided to enter her in the Pinnacle Sale at World Beef Expo. They say you have to sell your best ones and I am definitely doing that as she is one of the best ones I have raised. This WS A Step Up x SCC Sheza Blackbird half blood heifer has had a successful show career being named Reserve percentage heifer several times. We had a lot of fun with this girl but now it’s time for someone else to enjoy her. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the LPI team for any of your sales and marketing needs God bless, Eric “Lefty” Lee 608-295-5312

Dearest Heavenly Father, There are so many needs, so many problems and so many people hurting. But you have blessed us with so much as well that we overlook every day. Therefore, we pray for the farmers who lost so much in August due to the storms and ask you to strengthen them in the days ahead. But we also thank you for all the lives saved and for the police, firefighters and community members that have worked hard to make things better in the midst of this tragedy. We pray for the youth returning to schools and colleges as well as for the teachers and administrators so that they might stay safe. But we also thank you for the opportunity to educate our children and the freedom to choose how to best help them learn. We pray for our country and our government leaders that you would lead them to make good decisions during trying times. We also thank you for providing people willing to serve the public despite the challenges. Help each one of us to look to you for healing, safety and guidance. Help us also to see how you have already provided everything we need to make it through every day. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

2020 has sure been a year! Our agricultural industry seems to take hits left and right, but through it all; the integrity, kindness and sheer passion of the people involved seems to far outweigh the negativity. In these uncertain times, the need to draw closer to God has magnified ten fold for me. Moving the Holy Bible app on my phone to the very top, first thing when I unlock my phone probably sounds silly, but the act of putting God FIRST on that device, that seems to never leave my possession for long, was a symbolic thing for me. Another thing I have found myself relying on is the prayer shawl my Aunt Lori (Dad’s sister) made for me when I was struggling with all my skin cancer surgeries fifteen years ago. It’s funny that this little shawl that is the most beautiful shade of green has changed meaning for me over the years giving me comfort in various ways, but continuously giving me the sense of God in very different degrees. The shawl also has these beads sewn in on each end, which I often work through holding each one saying prayers for people. When I wrap it around me before going to sleep, it gives me this feeling of closeness to God. It helps me to settle my mind and KNOW, without a doubt, I am in His arms until the morning light. What things have you done to draw closer to God in these tumultuous times? I would love to hear your stories! I’m not sure how school looks for your family, but so far we are headed back like “normal.” We have some bigger milestones in the Rohrig House! Tucker will be a freshman in high school and has started driving himself with a school permit, Taylor will be in middle school and dancing three nights a week, and Treva is starting preschool. My baby starting preschool is enough to send me reeling and make me feel a little overwhelmed and weepy! I know for a fact that I specifically asked them to STOP growing up! I know, I know, I have to let go, but jeesh its hard! While I write this article, the kids are prepping for their 4-H Swine Show at what would normally be the Iowa State Fair. It will only be three days and a very limited number of people. We are just grateful they will be able to show and we keep reminding ourselves of that fact. I sure hope you all are finishing summer with some fun! We are looking forward to some fantastic sales this fall! Please don’t hesitate to give our sales people a shout if we can assist you in fulfilling your livestock needs! Check us out at www.livestockplusinc.com where you can always flip through the current issue or find that salesperson. Please continue to keep our military and our nation in your prayers. Travel safe and look us up! God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com P.S. My friend, Angie Mowbray, and I like to remind each other of God’s constant presence and send each other quotes, here is one I received from her today! 20/20 is considered perfect vision. Maybe God is using 2020 for us to see clearly that He’s in charge and the only one that can help us!
