MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings, Wow, what a rollercoaster of weather since I last wrote these comments. We have gone from cold coat wearing weather at ball games, to hoping we got back to the car before we had heat stroke. Went from dry to a little rain, thank you Lord for the rain that you have given us. Lord, PLEASE help those folks that have had no rain, they need help! My food report is maybe going to make some of you question my ability to select high end steak houses. Here’s what I can tell you, I have found more good food in little off beat locations than the big-name food establishments. So, as I was finishing helping my son at a parade in Yale, Iowa and deciding that it was time to feed ol’ Mike, when noon hits, ol’ Mike usually needs feed. The parade was over and we headed south from Yale. Bubba suggested a place in Panora to eat called “The Owls Nest.” I must have had a stupid look on my face, because he started explaining that he has eaten there and its pretty good and explained that it was a high-end bar with good food. Well, my opinion after finding a table was what a neat little bar. The menu was a little short but very intriguing. After a quick look through, my choice was the chili dog. At this point I know most of you are thinking this guy has slipped off the deep end, but the gamble was well worth it. The menu says: A jumbo beef hot dog topped with homemade chili, and onion. I added bacon, because everything is better with bacon! Then

hash browns; golden brown and crispy with onion and bacon and no cheese. I’m not sure where the spice came from, but it wasn’t bad spicy, just spicy enough that adult beverages tasted that much better. I will go out on a limb and say you will not be disappointed at “The Owls Nest” in Panora. Atmosphere, food, and service second to none. Once again, “The Corn Dog Kick Off” for the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation was held July 10th at the State Fairgrounds. Hats off to the Blue-Ribbon Crew! The food grazing was crazy good from Cattlemen’s Hot beef Sunday (my favorite) to everything on a stick, watermelon, pork chop, turkey legs, snow cones, pickles on a stick, and I darn sure can’t forget the Iowa State Fair Cookies, and lots more. The silent auction was unbelievable! There were bunches of really neat things. I was there to help with the live auction and it was unbelievable! The sale grossed over $292,000.00. Together with the silent auction, they grossed over a half million to renovate the Iowa State Fair. The Blue Ribbon Crew did a masterful job of organizing a great event. Thanks for letting our crew help your crew. Lastly the “All Iowa Show Down” August 8, 2021, held at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds in Oskaloosa, Iowa. If you haven’t witnessed this event, just believe me, it’s worth your time. What you

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

New Beef Processing Facility Construction Planned in Western Iowa Construction is planned to begin in spring 2022 for a $325 million federally-inspected beef processing facility in Mills County, Iowa. The new facility will process 1,500 head per day, employ 750 workers and provided an estimated annual economic impact of $1.1 billion. Chad Tentinger, founder and owner of TenCorp Inc., project developer and an Iowa cattle producer, wants to provide a market for cattle raised by smaller, independent cattle producers. Cattlemen’s Heritage is a newly formed corporation and with its roots in livestock production, plans to open the plant in late 2023. The facility will be situated on the MillsPottawattamie County line in western Iowa, fronted by Interstate 29, giving access to infrastructure and a good labor force. Ernie Goss with Goss & Associates con-

ducted the economic impact study of the Cattlemen’s Heritage beef plant. He says the facility will serve as a game changer for the surrounding counties by providing more than 3,300 jobs through construction and a total impact of $6.4 million. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig championed the cause for providing more market access for Iowa’s cattle producers, as well as new jobs and the expansion of Iowa’s agriculture. “Creating more economic value to Iowa agriculture and the state’s livestock industry will help bring the next generation back to the farm,” Naig says. “This is important for the success and sustainability of the ag community and our state’s economy.” Tentinger says Cattlemen’s Heritage wants to be able to help young farmers get into the cattle business and stay in the

industry. The plant will start by harvesting about 800 head per day for the first several months and ramp up to 1,500 head per day by the end of the first year. A full workforce will be hired to be on hand when the plant opens. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association looks forward to the plant providing an opportunity to harvest cattle within the state of Iowa. “This facility will provide another market access for Iowa’s cattle producers with hopes of boosting cattle prices through competition and giving the state a needed economic boost for agriculture and the local area,” Matt Deppe, CEO of ICA says. “We look forward to having continued conversations with the Cattlemen’s Heritage group and how they can help our state’s cattle producers.”

Governor’s Charity Steer Show Returns to Iowa State Fairgrounds The Governor’s Charity Steer Show will return to the Iowa State Fairgrounds! The event, which raises funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, will be held on Saturday, August 14 at 4:30 p.m. CST in the Livestock Pavilion on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds plans to participate in this year’s show, which has been a top priority among Iowa’s governors for the past 39 years. “Last year’s show, held at the Jeff & Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center, garnered a lot of support. While forced to adapt to coronavirus related restrictions, we were still able to raise $250,000 for the Ronald McDonald House

Charities of Iowa,” Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says. “The show will return to the Iowa State Fair, where we hope to exceed last year’s fundraising efforts. My husband, First Gentleman Kevin Reynolds, was awarded Grand Champion honors last year. I look forward to competing this year, and bringing the Overall Grand Champion award back to the Governor’s Mansion.” The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council are proud to co-host this event. Since 1983, the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show has raised over $4.1 million dollars for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. On August 14, 24 steers will compete for Overall Grand Champion, Showmanship,

People’s Choice and a new award, referred to as Community Hero. The Community Hero award promotes fundraising efforts by encouraging steer owners to collect donations for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. Immediately following the competition, steers will be sold in the Penningroth Media Center. All proceeds will go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. The 39th annual Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show will be broadcasted online through Walton Webcasting. Visit iowagovernorscharitysteershow.com for more information.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Be Positive I was working in the haymow getting ready for the next cutting. A fast-moving storm came through, bringing one-half inch of rain and a foot of wind. The wind took out the power lines, leaving me in the dark. I opened the loft doors to let in some light. The result was two-fold—light inside and vision outside. Even before the much-needed rain stopped, I could see the grass and crops respond. What just a few hours before had been challenging heat and dry wind became an opportunity for reprieve and renewed hope for the future. Much more rain will be needed to finish the crop, but you can’t finish if you don’t start. Getting ready for the future starts now.

ICA just completed two events designed to review results: Carcass Challenge and BeefMeets. These events are designed to gather member input and better prepare for the future of our industry. Attention to market transparency, concentration and sustainability are constant touch points for ICA and you as members. The Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) continues to prepare new, young leaders for their roles in the future of cattle production. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation provides learning opportunities and scholarships to help assure a positive future for all of us. Each of these endeavors may be

looked at as bales of hay to fill the haymow, to prepare for and feed the future of our great industry. Navigating today’s difficulties provides us with a clearer vision of tomorrow’s opportunities. Identifying these opportunities will enhance our mission of advocacy, leadership and education. Ours is and should be a positive message. No credence need be given to the detractors. Working for positive change and results is what we are about. Stay safe and call a friend. - Dick Godfrey, ICA President

Over the past 23 years, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association members have come to know Merle Witt. In 1988, Merle served his first term on the Carroll County Cattlemen’s Board. A decade later, Merle would join the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and oversee membership in southwest Iowa. Mark Williams and John Hinners, both formerly of Carroll County, were quick to offer Merle the job. Merle was surprised by the offer, but his earnest efforts made him the ideal candidate for the job. “In the summer of 1995, Mark and John came to one of our board meetings. They wanted us to increase our Carroll County membership,” Witt recalls. “I tried my luck selling memberships on a cold, nasty day when I didn’t want to work outside. I sold 15 memberships that day. That was pretty easy, so I kept selling memberships on the cold days. I ended up with 156 new members, both producers and friends of the industry from Carroll County for the 1995-1996 membership year. Another ICA member and Dallas County board member was recruiting members in his area. Shane Boston, a banker at the time, recruited the same number of members I did. We both received saddles for being the top recruiters. To my knowledge, we still hold the record.” Since then, Merle has continued to go above and beyond for the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. Merle not only recruited new members, but raised thousands of dollars for the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. Merle retired at the end of June. Merle, we thank you for your service and wish you the best in your next adventure!

Even though summer is slowly winding down it sure does feel good to be back! This summer sure has been a busy one but another fun one to say the least! One of my favorite parts of summer is always the Men’s College World Series in Omaha, NE. My family has always had a love for the game of baseball. As a matter of fact, I can still remember being in elementary school and taking a sick day in the spring so my grandmother could come over and stay with me and just watch baseball all day. My parents always spoiled us as kids by making sure we got up to Omaha to watch games for the 10 day CWS stretch. One thing about baseball is that its a lot like the cattle business with all the good people it brings together. For 10 days in Omaha everyone gets along and has an awesome time grilling, playing yard games, and watching baseball. The stories and atmosphere that the teams bring to the ball park is truly second to none. A lot of people will ask, “how do you sit down and watch baseball like that?” but to me, if you truly watch, you can see just how much of a thinking man’s game it is. Every player on the diamond is moving on every pitch and ready for whatever comes their way. When the game is played correctly, there is nothing better in my opinion! Even if you’re not a baseball fan, but have the opportunity to get to a game in Omaha next summer, it is something I truly suggest you do because it will be an experience of a lifetime! This month my hat goes off to your favorite summer activity and I truly hope you enjoyed it with family and friends! I am beyond excited to hit the road this fall and start seeing all the high quality calves roaming Iowa and Missouri. As always, don’t hesitate to give me or any of our team a call as we would love to assist you in marketing your livestock. Don’t forget, we also offer marketing expertise on Facebook and other social media. Have a great rest of your summer and state fair season! Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com My wife has finished her real estate license and joined The Land Guy Team… Welcome Ann Whitaker! She has been involved in agriculture her entire life and it was only fitting for her to add real estate professional to her portfolio. Land prices are continually rising. We saw many strong sales this past month. You may have heard people talking about $15K–$17K/acre farmland…that is not a rumor…highly tillable soils with a high CSR are bringing exactly that!

Iowa Land Guy

“Of all the highest prices we are seeing; the top sales are all coming from auctions.” - Ann Whitaker

With the latest reports coming out saying we will be short on acres we could see the commodity prices rise. When that happens, you will see land prices stay strong and maybe even stronger. We also saw that more acres traded hands in June and May than we have seen in the last two years. If you are a farmer, be prepared for higher land prices and higher cash rents into next year. There is a lot of cash out there and low interest rates. We will continue to see land moving through the fall. If you are considering selling make sure you don’t sell it short and call us to take it to a competitive bidding atmosphere. “Of all the highest prices we are seeing; the top sales are all coming from auctions.” Ann Whitaker.

The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets by Michael Seek Fox Group at the Board of Trade

The Corn market is in its biggest bull market in 9 years and more than a few veterans in the north parts of Iowa still think it is the driest sub-soil since the drought year of 2012-13. The biggest Quarterly USDA report has come and gone and the report was so bullish that Corn ignited for a limit move of 40’0 in less than 90 seconds. It was something to behold, almost as if it was glitch on a screen by data vendors, but it really did happen. Fast forward to the July USDA ‘Monthly’ report and even though it was not considered bullish the Corn market jolted up by the end of the day anyway. These are the signs of a bull market. You’ll notice in the chart below showing ‘Goldman Sachs Corn Index’ that new crop December Corn has a long way to go before the end of the year to meet the upper Gann line objective and thereby more accurately reflect the staggering demand for Corn and Meal by China and the likely below trendline yields and of course the inflation that the Federal Reserve claims is ‘transitory’. It is advisable to get with your banker and CPA and grain suppliers and give strong consideration to locking in your feed needs for livestock operations through mid-Feb 2022. Think about it, who is going to sell more Corn than is necessary after harvest once it is in the bin and folks realize they might have ‘gold coins’ of a sort.

the Federal Reserve-Jerome Powell-was taken to the woodshed two weeks ago by the honorable Congresswoman Anne Wagner of Missouri and the Pennsylvania Senator Patrick Toomey and both of them took Powell to task on the notion that inflation is only ‘transitory’ as both of them listed too many items to list here that were showing serious inflation that is hurting Americans. Senator Toomey went further and made Powell look bewildered by asking Powell how in the world could keep buying 40 BILLION DOLLARS per month of Mortgage-backed Securities when the housing market is on fire. Powell did not like the questions but had nowhere to go. The irony is that the Fed President of Dallas-Robert Kaplanmade it clear in a recent interview that buying Mortgagebacked securities is no longer appropriate and tapering it all is appropriate. Remember, when you hear ‘tapering’ on the financial news then understand they are talking about ‘reducing to eventual elimination’ of the purchase of US Treasuries and Mortgagebacked Securities for the Fed to take them off the market and force rates to stay low. Is that good for you? Maybe shortterm. It is likely disastrous for the generations of kinfolk that are behind you that you love and care about. If you don’t like the idea of your children and grandchildren being stuck with their ‘share of the national debt’ to the tune of $75,000 to 100,000 dollars of debt then you may want to start a conversation with your own congressmen and women and senators to let them know the current path of more trillions of dollars of debt each year is no longer acceptable. Again, do we really want the senior citizens to keep getting less than 1 percent on their jumbo savings account and not be able to buy much of anything so that Wall Street can stay solvent and keep rolling corporate debt to new debt with negative real interest rates? Negative real interest rates [current interest rate minus the rate of inflation] sound pretty good till you realize what they are doing to the debt structure of the USA and the ramifications thereof. The mutations of the Covid-virus are on the move and hopefully the mutated viruses’ do not start another pandemic as the summer ends and the first freeze ushers in the cold that facilitates illness via exposure to winter viruses. Provided the very clever E484K variant does not become resistant to vaccines and cause new pandemics and shut down most of the restaurants and small businesses’ in your neck of the woods we think the Cattle business goes on in the last quarter of this current year to be one of the best years since 2015 on Cash Fats on the finish. Take a look at the monthly chart below and you can see where the Fat Cattle look like they want to go to. Markets continued on pg 50

You’ve heard the Federal Reserve say that recent and current inflation is ‘transitory’, correct? Well, the Chairman of

Again, feel free to call Michelle after the Cattle and Corn markets close here at the Board and she will arrange a quick teleconference for 20 minutes with us to help you educate yourself on the risk and opporutunties of hedging or front-loading potential feed or livestock on the dirt. n

MATT LOWERY Suffice it to say that hedging your family and ranch interests from Corn to Cattle may be critical during the next pandemic. Few hard-working old-fashioned capitalists here in the Midwest can wrap their mind around the idea of socialistic powers and policies getting a stronger and stronger foothold in the United States of America. Uncertain times means hedging your business interests’ before the fact, not after the fact. Naturally if you are already a bona-fide livestock producer that has experience in hedging livestock on the Board then you’ll want to see the wholesale beef and dressed steer approach to optimizing Cattle hedges. So to get a new perspective on beef and dressed integration you’ll need to

Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee

It is hard to believe summer is winding down and we are already to state fair season. It has been a fun but busy summer full of tractor pulls, golf, and weddings. We have been to four weddings with a fifth one in September. My friend Mike has an IH 1066 altered tractor and we are in the process of building him a 1066 Pro Farm. It has been a lot of fun. There is a couple of us helping Mike with the build and everyone has a little different view on how to fabricate, mount and run things which is very helpful on a ground up build like this. As I write this, we are hoping to have it on the track next week. I will have to keep you all updated on the outcome of that. My golf game has greatly improved this summer. After not playing for almost ten years, my friends convinced me to join the men’s league on Thursday nights at Cecelia’s golf course or The Emerald Grove Country Club as we like to call it. I know I had never hit off the blues or kept actual score before. My first round definitely reflected that. If I remember correctly I believe it was a 72 and that is on 9 not 18. I have since then knocked 20 strokes off my game and am now hitting low fifties pretty consistently. My hope is to shave a few more strokes off and sneak into the 40s yet this summer. As we get closer to the fall, I grow more excited for fall sale season to start. Mike, Austin, and I were in Des Moines last week to help out with the Corndog Kickoff Blue Ribbon Foundation fundraiser auction and that definitely got me looking forward to September! As you begin to plan your fall sales, please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the other LPI family members for any of your livestock marketing needs. Thank you and God bless, Eric “Lefty” Lee 608-295-5312

Dearest Heavenly Father, No matter what changes there are the world, in our country or in our lives, You always stay the same. Help us to trust you more in both the good times and the bad because we can be assured that You love us and want the best for us. We pray for our country to be at peace and to follow the guidance that we find in Your Word. We pray for our families that You would protect them and bless them with time together even during the busy times of County and State Fairs as summer winds down and school starts again. We pray for our farms and businesses that they would remain strong and flourish in the days ahead. Finally, we pray for our churches, that they might guide us with Your Truth, Support us with Your love and bring our Communities back together around You. Thanks you for all that you do for us every day whether we acknowledge You or not in the moment. And we pray that we live our lives in such a way that people come to know You better through our words and actions. We pray all of this in Jesus’ name. Amen. So this month I’m very torn, I’m so incredibly happy that our county and state fairs are BACK to “normal”, but yikes, now I have all the projects to oversee and getting kids to finish writeups! Seriously, I don’t know about your kids but mine have all these great ideas but when it comes to finishing the write-ups it’s painful! Then tack on weights at school for both big T’s, football, basketball and volleyball camps, Treva’s speech and OT appts and lastly working on show pigs for hours upon hours every day! That doesn’t count mom’s LPI deadline, and trying to attempt to be a somewhat decent 4-H leader. At the end of the day, I keep telling myself that my 18 summers with my kids has shortened significantly because I guess they insist on continually getting older! Trying to, as they say, “ENJOY EVERY MOMENT.” This whole 4-H leader position is definitely a role I question for myself, like whether or not I should continue, only because I know I should be doing a much better job. I feel like I drop the ball on various things throughout the year. My 4-H kids in my club are solely the ENTIRE reason why I keep renewing my volunteer training hours. I also kinda feel a little bad for the kids in my club because I think of them as my own kids … my heart hurts when theirs hurts and I want the best for each of them. I try to push them and they probably get real tired of my “pep talks.” When I get pictures from their parents showing them enjoying their livestock and static exhibit projects, I feel like my heart will explode! I’m so proud of all of them! I pray everyone takes a moment to truly appreciate the 4-H and FFA organizations and what amazing qualities of leadership and confidence these kids take into the rest of their lives! Good luck to all the exhibitors this month, remember to CLAP for everyone! Also, keep in mind, everyone has their struggles, no matter how amazing they look from the outside. BE KIND! Keep our nation and military in your prayers always! God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
