MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings, We are back!!! Or are we? I have lots to say about what is happening in this world, but I do believe I will keep it short. First this virus thing: it has kept me down for 3 months, and I didn’t even have it (that I know of). I have decided to cautiously get back out. I’m figuring that if the good Lord wants me, he will take care of the timing, but until then I believe I’m going to live while I’m alive. The police thing, I guess I was taught, don’t break the law, and you will not have to deal with police. As far as I know, and the book of law that my law comes from, ALL LIVES MATTER. It’s kind of trickle down, you break the law (I don’t care if you are pink) you broke the law, you want to act stupid, police will do what they have to rectify the problem, and I for one am behind them all the way. Now that’s it, off my short soap box (with lots more to say). Food in lock up is really tough. It gave me time to think about how it used to be. I have grilled hundreds of burgers on my Treager but it just seems that they all dry out and are just not that satisfying. So, you always go back to the point and the place where you really liked hamburgers and the place that keeps popping back into my mind is when I was a kid (in high school). We used to walk up town at noon and grab a burger at the bar and the two I remember best was Bob Parkis and George and Lois Winters. They both made the meanest burgers. You know they are really good when you take a bite, wipe your mouth and hope that you held over the bar cause the grease was going to drip. So, I think back at how they grilled burgers that fit that description. They were all cooked on a type of cast iron griddle. In my vast wisdom I began looking for that type of surface to see if I could duplicate George, Lois, and Bob’s burgers. What I found was a Blackstone grill and naturally everybody was sold out. My determination finally won and I found one that no that one else

had found after 20 phone calls. So, with that mission behind me I started looking for good hamburger. I called the locker I use, no hamburger, called a friend that had butchered; sold out, called another locker, sold out. Now this is not an advertisement for Ruby Cattle Co. or Facebook, but Leslie had posted on Facebook that they had some beef for sale. I called and she said she had a little left, I said, I’ll take it! Dixie and I jumped in the truck and headed to Murray, Iowa. Now, I didn’t get a lot that day but I did get all she would sell. After trying it that night on my Blackstone griddle, I quickly called back and ordered another batch. They have these cool ranch named packages that they put together so that you can pick and choose the package that fits you best. Its just amazing to me how much difference there is in beef. Our first sampling of Ruby Cattle Co. beef, the Blackstone griddle, and the memory of the old bars I used to frequent was deadly. I’m sold on the beef I purchased from Ruby Cattle Co. I know it takes good beef to make a chef look good. Well, they have it and when prepared on my Blackstone griddle, Dixie and I were sold. Thanks to Nate, Leslie, Creed Ruby, Miles Eddy and the Blackstone company. I offer my sympathies to all 4-H and FFA members with all the county and state fairs cancelling. Growing up, those were the highlights of my life. The friends you acquire along the way, the great times that were had, and the life lessons you made it through. I always refer to the show road as a large 4-H and FFA fraternity, now an adult fraternity, and the Iowa State Fair as the granddaddy fraternity of them all. I have been involved with 4-H, FFA, and the Iowa State Fair since I was

nine years old and will be involved until the good Lord calls my number. Best of luck on all our limited show and go’s, make the best of it, you will never forget it! Believe it or not, Livestock Plus Inc. is celebrating twenty-five years. A quick synopsis; we started with 1,000 names on a mailing list (hand selected by me) in July 1995 and grew from there. We have stayed with the same thoughts we started with, supply an advertising avenue that people can afford and offer our services at ring side in an honorable and trusting fashion. We have taken great pride in that fact. We deliver LPI in 2020 to nearly 16,000 mailboxes in 43 states, to people that have requested our publication, then hand deliver another 500 – 1,000 each month depending on what’s happening in the livestock industry such as State Fairs, regional shows and lots of sales. At the start it was all by hand. We took the publication off the press, loaded it in pickups, trucked it to our office, unloaded it, labeled, sorted by zip code, bagged it, loaded it again, headed to post office, unloaded, weighed, and stacked for delivery. Many thanks to the folks that helped me do all that. Then the next phase of LPI was the move to Clarion, Iowa and Allen Printing. I felt like I was moving on up the ladder quite a little, I really liked being there on print day; although I really didn’t do much but get in the way, picked up my extra copies, and complain once in a while about little trivial things. Special thanks to all those folks that were associated with that step, and especially to Linda Luppen who we employed at that point and has put LPI together for the last 20 plus years. I have given her heck (trying to be polite) many times, she has given me heck back many times, we have been mad at each other, best part we have always gotten over it. Thanks, Linda! Special thanks to my wife and kids for all their support.

Heidi has stuck with us from the start for all 25 years, Bubba and Mandi off-and-on when we needed them, my mom and dad (rest in peace dad), Dixie’s mom (the best mother-in-law anyone could ask for, rest in peace), Don Esslinger for all travel time and the moral support (rest in peace, Don), Larry Calkins for all his good advice and humor, and Beth Frank for her labors through that manual phase of LPI. To the Allen Family, thank you for taking us to the next level, and to all the outside designers, and all the folks that have helped along the way a BIG THANK YOU! Please be safe out there, travel safe and have a great summer. As always PLEASE keep our country’s leaders in your prayers. Please thank our first responders for your safety, and PLEASE thank our veterans for your freedom.

muirembroidery@netins.net "Heat Stress" continued from pg 12 the feeding period will have decreased ability to regulate their heat load. Managing Heat Stress The water requirements of cattle increases during heat stress. Cattle lose water from increased respiration and perspiration. Additionally, consumption of water is the quickest method for cattle to reduce their core body temperature. Therefore, water consumption will be greater than typical metabolic requirements. Rule of thumb is that cattle need 3 inches of linear water space per head during the summer. Extra water tanks should be introduced prior to extreme heat events so that cattle become accustomed to them. Waterers need to be kept clean to encourage cattle to consume adequate water. The water supply should be able to

deliver 1.1% of body weight of the cattle per hour. A 1000 pound animal needs about 1.5 gallons of water per hour. Heat production from feed intake peaks 4 to 6 hours after feeding. Therefore heat production in cattle fed in the morning will peak in the middle of the day when environmental temperatures are also elevated. Cattle should receive a least 70% of their feed 2 to 4 hours after peak ambient temperature. Changing the ration has been controversial but research indicates that lowering the energy content of diet will decrease the heat load. The general recommendation is to reduce the diet energy content by 5 to 7%. Shade can be critical in determining whether cattle die during extreme heat events, especially for black cattle. To be effective there needs to be 20 to 40 square feet of shade per animal. If the shade structure has an east-west orientation then ground under the shade will remain cooler. However, if mud is an issue then a north-south orientation will increase drying as the shade moves across the ground during the day. The height of the shade structure should be greater than 8 feet tall to allow sufficient air movement under the shade. Increasing the air flow can help cattle cope with extreme heat events. Wind speed has been shown to be associated with ability of cattle to regulate their heat load. Although we cannot influence wind speed, feedlots can increase ability for cattle to be exposed to air movement. Utilize temporary wind breaks in winter to allow maximal air movement in summer. Remove tall vegetation within 150 feet of the feedlot pens. Tall earthen mounds will allow cattle more exposure to air movement. Feedlots should assess their feedlot and know which pens have poor air movement. Avoid using these pens for cattle that will be approaching slaughter weights in mid to late summer. Another factor that feedlots can address is to control flies. Biting flies cause cattle to bunch up which decreases cooling. Minimizing breeding areas for flies and applying insecticides to decrease fly populations prior to heat stress times is worthwhile. Sprinklers can be used to cool cattle during times of stress. Sprinklers increase evaporative cooling and can reduce ground temperature. Sprinklers should thoroughly wet the animal and not just mist the air in order to cool the animal. Before installing a system make sure the water supply is adequate to provide drinking water and sprinklers. Sprinkle intermittently to avoid mud and increased humidity. Sprinklers should be placed away from feed bunks and waterers. Cattle need to be introduced to sprinklers prior to extreme heat. Cattle not used to sprinklers will try to avoid the spray.

"Heat Stress" continued from pg 16 Additionally, sprinklers need to be used before cattle are in extreme stress. Thermal shock from cold water can kill cattle that are extremely stressed. Once sprinklers are utilized they need to be continued until the heat event is over and cattle can manage on their own. Warning signs Feedlots need to monitor environmental temperatures throughout the summer. Any time the Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) is above 80 cattle will be under heat stress. Hot weather following precipitation can increase the THI dramatically. Finally if overnight temperatures are above 70°F cattle will have increased heat stress. The USDA-ARS and NOAA forecasts heat stress that feedlots can use to make management decisions at: http://www.ars.usda.gov/Main/docs.htm?docid=20426. During times of increased heat stress cattle should be observed closely to identify if additional strategies need to be implemented. Initially feed intake will drop off and cattle become restless. As heat stress increases cattle will begin to slobber and respiration rates will increase. Eventually, cattle will begin to group together. In severe heat stress cattle will be open mouth breathing with a labored effort. Feedlots need to monitor for heat stress and implement strategies to minimize impact on cattle to prevent severe death from heat stress. IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

2020 Governor’s Charity Steer Show Will Go On Plans are underway for the 38th Annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show (GCSS) to be held on August 15, 2020. The event, which raises money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, would typically be held at the Iowa State Fair. This year’s show will be held at the Hansen Student Learning Center on the Iowa State University Campus. “The Governor’s Charity Steer Show is a long-standing tradition and benefits a very good cause,” says Tanner Lawton, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association staff member and co-chair of this year’s GCSS. “We’ve

known for the past few weeks that the show and auction probably wouldn’t be the same as it has been in years past, but our priority is making sure that we have a successful fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Iowa.” This historic philanthropic event has raised over $3.8 million to help provide a home away from home for families of children who are being treated in nearby hospitals. Ronald McDonald Houses are located in Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City. Steers from across the state will com-

pete for the championship designation, showmanship honors, and the People’s Choice award. Each of the steers has been raised by an Iowa youth involved in the cattle industry, and celebrities will accompany the young steer owners. Immediately following the competition, the steers will be sold at auction with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. Last year’s auction raised more than $284,000. The GCSS show and auction will also be broadcast online. For more information, visit www. iowagovernorscharitysteershow.com.

2020 Carcass Challenge steers harvested Over the past decade, many cattlemen have participated in this contest to support ICA and see how their cattle stack up. As Iowa’s only statewide fed-beef competition, the ICA Carcass Challenge: • Showcases Iowa’s genetics, feedyard management, and technology. • Offers a fun and competitive statewide fed-beef contest. • Generates non-dues ICA revenue to grow Iowa’s beef business through advocacy, leadership and education. • Provides leadership and learning opportunities through the ICA Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program. This year, 73 steers completed 182days on feed after being delivered to Lauritsen Cattle Company at Exira in November. Harvest took place at the end of May at the Greater Omaha plant. The expertise and guidance from David Trowbridge and Faye French with Gregory

Feedlots and the ultrasound collection by Isaiah Shnurman with Square B Ranch has helped ICA analyze data. EID tags were utilized to receive carcass data from the plant. This information is then shared with donors and breeders to help them understand how their cattle perform individually and compared to the rest of the group. Thank you to our additional sponsors, including Elanco, Producers Livestock, the CUP Lab, Thielen Trucking, AMVC Veterinary Service and the Audubon County Cattlemen. The average live weight of the 73 steers was 1,409 pounds and average hot carcass weight was 881 pounds. The average daily gain on the entire group was 3.93 pounds per day. The breakdown of quality grade included 4% of the steers grading Prime, 68% grading Choice and 27% grading Select. Twenty-eight steers qualified for Certified Angus Beef.

Comparing this year’s Carcass Challenge steers to the national benchmarks from the 2016 National Beef Quality Audit, 7.6% more of the cattle graded as yield grades 1, 2 or 3 compared to the national average while more than 50% fewer Carcass Challenge steers were marked as yield grades 4 and 5. For quality grade, the percentage of steers in the Prime category was slightly higher than the national average. Cash prizes and special awards will be presented to contributors of the Top 10% of individual steers based on the “Retail Value per Day on Feed,” recognizing both feedyard performance and end carcass merit. Monetary prizes are awarded to the top steer and awards are given to outstanding individual carcass results. We are looking forward to releasing the entire data set and celebrating the winners at the banquet in September. August 2020

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

50/14: Increasing Cash Trade and Price Discovery in Fed Cattle Markets For more than a decade, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association has been dedicated to finding solutions to address the need for more price discovery in the fed cattle markets. This need has been identified by industry leaders, cattle producers, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group, and academia. Since the implementation of Livestock Mandatory Reporting in 1999, we have seen a shift in the way cattle are marketed in major cattle feeding regions. According to research commissioned by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), participation in the negotiated cash market has dwindled from approximately 56 percent of all transactions in 2005 to nearly 26 percent in 2016. Simultaneously, the prevalence of formula transactions has grown to a majority. Overview of Reporting Regions There is significant variance in cattle marketing methodology between reporting regions, which highlights concerns related to price discovery and market vulnerabilities. In the Iowa/Minnesota region, 50 percent or more of fed cattle are sold via the cash, or spot, market each week. Conversely, the Texas/Oklahoma/New Mexico region is at less than 10 percent in the cash market. While declines in the cash market have occurred across the beef belt, the regional disparity is evident based on market reporting data. Why should cash trade be a priority in the beef cattle industry? Price discovery provided by the cash fed cattle market also impacts feeder cattle, beef, and futures markets. Currently, price discovery occurs more

robustly among smaller farmer-feeders in the midwest, while larger feeders in the southern regions benefit, using the negotiated prices set here as part of their formula transactions. Many large feeders are rewarded for the quantity of cattle they can provide to processors. These cattle can bring 20 to 40 dollars per head more than negotiated cash cattle, even though the cash cattle in Iowa and the upper midwest generally grade much higher. Further compounding the problems for feeders in the midwest is that many of the cattle traded through formula transactions are considered captive supply, leaving packers with less incentive to compete for cattle to meet their needs. What is the 50/14 mandate? In May 2020, Sen. Grassley (R-IA), along with colleagues Sens. Tester (D-MT), Smith (D-MN), Ernst (R-IA), Rounds (R-SD), Hyde-Smith (R-MS), and Daines (R-MT), introduced S. 3693 to foster efficient markets while increasing competition and transparency among meat packers who purchase livestock directly from independent producers. In early July, Reps. Axne (D-IA), Finkenauer (D-IA) and Loebsack (D-IA), introduced a companion bill in the U.S. House, making this a bipartisan, bicameral initiative. There are two main provisions included in these bills: 1) A minimum of 50 percent of a meat packer’s volume of beef slaughter must be purchased in the cash market per plant 2) Purchased negotiated fed inventory must be slaughtered no more than 14 days after the date on which an agreement is entered into between the producer and packer. Although cattlemen do not typically

favor government intervention, we believe it is warranted due to extreme consolidation and oligopsony in the meatpacking industry, the need for price discovery, and the current disadvantages to producers who participate in the cash market. Further, we believe this mandate is necessary to prevent an oligopsony of cattle feeders, in which a small number of cattle feeders would be the only buyers for the thousands of cow-calf producers across the United States. Without transformation, the feeding and processing sectors of the beef industry will move toward more vertical integration, much like the hog industry. Current ICA Policy: CP-LCM-44 Increasing Price Discovery 2020 WHEREAS, the Iowa cattlemen who sell their cattle on the open market rely on competitive price discovery to get a fair price for their cattle; and WHEREAS, most independent Iowa cattlemen wish to avoid vertical integration that is evident in the pork and poultry sectors; and WHEREAS, the popularity of packer formula pricing based on the weighted average limits negotiations on the open market; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association work with its membership, as well as other cattle industry stakeholders, to require packers in all major cattle feeding regions to purchase at least 50 percent of their cattle through negotiated cash trade at the plant level, with a 14 day delivery period. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and NCBA encourage members to utilize voluntary price reporting of fed cattle prices.

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

The Wuhan-virus has turned the world upside down on its head, both financially and socially, and even if everything goes back to normal this will not happen for somewhere between a year and 2 years. The funny thing—actually not really that humorous—is that Cattle producers and industry workers may have some very good years and down the road very bad years because of this fiasco and pandemic. Why? Recall that the Federal Reserve and other Central Bankers around the world have been saying on their monetary policy meeting and press conferences that they need and desire more inflation and were saying this before the Wuhan-virus hit and before the United States began printing trillions of dollars to give away ‘deposit’ to middle to lower income folks across the nation. Thus the now 27 to 28 trillion dollars [yes TRILLION] of national debt will need to be inflated away like a 3rd world country like Venezuela or Nicaragua. That kind of inflation may drive Cattle prices into the stratosphere short term [years 2021 and 2022] but after the inflation then the descendants of Cattle Producers will be left with dollar purchasing power that will be so low that both parents and one of the kids will need to contribute their paychecks into a big jar to buy the normal goods and services each Midwest family reasonably needs. The old saying ‘be careful what you ask for’ comes to mind on this inflation desire of the Central Banks around the world. Japan began this sort of game in 1992 and that was 28 years ago and they are still in the tank and a shadow of their former self. Another old saying’ you can’t spend more than you bring in, Sonny’ comes to mind and our United [partially anyway] States is dangerously close to the financial cliff. Have you noticed the stock market has been resilient through all of this ‘shut-down economy’? This phenomenon has been at the blessing of the Federal Reserve that has pushed the envelope across and over the edge of the table to the point of buying Corporate Bond ETF’s [Exchange Traded Funds] and also individual Corporate Bonds if criteria are met. Many veterans on Wall Street have wondered out loud if the Fed will begin buying Walmart and Home Depot stock to keep the U.S. from going down the proverbial toilet. Gold has been the strongest market in the world and you must have noticed that it has been making new multi-year highs’ every other month and this has been a function of the wild printing of dollars with no backing. Here’s the point—if Cattle prices, both bull steers and or Fats and Feeders of regular day to day commerce—only move up 1/3 as much Gold prices then the Cattle industry will be giddy for a season or three. You might be thinking as a Cattle industry producer or feedlot manager that if inflation takes hold and sends everything through the roof then surely there is little to no need to hedge your Cattle on the dirt. Regrettably this mindset could be costly in the interim since the Packers have so much power and significant amount of control over the amount they pay to

42

Livestock Plus Inc.

Cattle Producers. So let’s say inflation heats up for a year or two. This will then likely ‘heat up’ volatility and this would likely create much wilder swings on the Board than the Sale Barn for Feeders has ever been and if the swings become that pronounced then timing of hedge lock-in’s per head will be even more important on the cycles that Cattle Producers normally run on. Boxed Beef markets, primarily the top side Primal Beef cutouts, look like they may have achieved and important bottom

mid-July and with so many restaurants opening and closing and re-opening and closing as the virus winds shifts it is quite possible that everyone invests in their backyard and deck and turns their deck into their own ‘Roadhouse’ restaurant and ends up buying more beef than ever before and said potential type of demand combined with inflation getting traction and beef prices then light up and all of a sudden Dressed Steers are north of 220.00 to 230.00 cwt.

If you are already a bona-fide livestock producer you can probably think of many times over the years that you wish you had used airbags to hedge your hedge on your Cattle on the dirt or simply taken the hedges’ off. If you would like to get a new perspective on livestock hedging by integrating USDA wholesale beef pricing and you would like to receive on a complimentary basis for two full months by email both ‘Daily and Weekend ‘Livestock Reports’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and respective beef cutout valuations then call Michelle White at call her at 312.756.0931 and give her your email address. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle futures still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee

To say it has been an interesting year is an understatement. A normal summer in Wisconsin consists of fairs, festivals, tractor pulls, and cow shows. With the majority of that being canceled, the only thing fun we have left to do is golf. My buddy Mike talked me into joining the Thursday night golf league or Farmers League as we call it. I had not swung a club since 2011 so I was just a tad rusty. If there is such a thing as a double scratch golfer I’d be it. My first three rounds of the year were well into the seventies on a par 36 course. I have since found my irons and now I’m starting to get my driver straightened out. My last round was a 54 which is a long way from a 74. If I’m not working or on the course, I’m out with the cows or working on heifers. I have a Step Up x Blackbird half blood that we are working on. We finally got to take her out at the end of May for the Valley Beef Show where she was Reserve Percentage behind the Bayer family. On a normal year, there are around a hundred head total and it’s the last prospect show of the year. This year it was the first show of the year and there were about two hundred heifers alone. With state fair being canceled, a group has came together here in Wisconsin to ensure the kids have a replacement show. With every Expo and preview show

that pops up, I gain a little more confidence that we are getting back to normal. I feel like the industry as a whole shares my feelings on this. With that, I am excited to get my own calves going and get back into sale season. I pray that everyone stays healthy and happy as we finish out this crazy summer. Do not hesitate to contact me or any of the LPI family as you begin to plan your fall sales God bless Eric “Lefty” Lee 608-295-5312

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer to the best of their ability. I always try to look at the bright side of things and am finding that even in such uncertain times, there is always a reason to say “Good.” I listen to a podcast by former Navy Seal Jocko Willink and his philosophy is that it’s our job to find the good in every situation, no matter what it may be. Show got cancelled? Good. It’s an opportunity to get some work done that we’ve been putting off. There’s undoubtedly some good that has come out of this situation that we all find ourselves in. I think everyone can sense or feel that. We have found what’s important and what is not in our day to day lives. But, I challenge you next time you hear some news like “The cows are in the neighbors corn” or “We’ve got some calves that need doctored” to respond with a “Good.” Two things will happen, you will either feel better or make the other person think that you’ve lost your mind. Dearest Heavenly Father, thank you for always being just a prayer away. You are always listening and at work beside us even if we don’t always notice that you are there. Thank you for giving us the strength to do our daily tasks and the courage to face each day with hope no matter what is happening around us. Thank you for the sun, the rain and all of the little things that you bless us with in this world that you created. Thank you for our country and the freedoms you provide us with every day. Help us to be good stewards of our businesses, our families, our animals and our land. Help us to live out our faith each day, even when it’s hard, and to be kind to others even when they might not be so kind to us in return. Remind us that you died on the cross for us while we were still sinners so that we can always try to forgive others as you have forgiven us. Give us the peace to know that even during times of suffering, you will empower us to persevere and that nothing in all creation can separate us from your love. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

What a summer it has been! 3 months have passed since our last issue and I was expecting life to be much closer to normal than it was then but that hasn’t really happened. I don’t need to go into detail on why that is the case because most of us already know. And those of us that don’t – wouldn’t listen anyway. As my dad always used to say, “it goes in one ear and right out the other!” Regardless of all our opinions of everything going on in this country, since when does not agreeing turn into hate? There are a lot of people that I disagree with but that doesn’t mean we aren’t friends. You know what I think this country needs? Let’s make everyone listen to “This Cowboy’s Hat” by Chris LeDoux. If that song doesn’t explain what we need then I don’t know what would. I can tell you that even with all this madness going on – we must look to the positives. Sure, we have missed opportunities for shows, sales, travel, etc. But maybe you have spent that extra time at home with your family, doing things with your kids you wouldn’t have otherwise or doing those projects you never have time to get done. Personally, it has been a great opportunity for Tamar and me to spend time at home and watch Cort grow. The little

man is already over 10 months old! It will be fun for us to look back on this and be thankful for that extra time we spent just being us. One last thing before I go – did anyone else get a little extra proud and excited to fly that flag this 4th of July? I think with everything going on it made the name “Independence Day” a little more of a reality. Right or wrong, some of our freedoms have been affected lately. My prayer is that it is the wake-up call some of us needed to not take for granted the independence we have in this country and not to forget that those freedoms did not come free. Iowa Land Guy

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com

Land prices to report for the month of May and June were virtually nonexistent. We saw companies across Iowa using technology to host land auctions. The buyers are adapting to the change and we have seen search traffic for land on the rise. The spring has shown to be positive for farmers to get their crops planted in a timely manner. As auctioneers, realtors, and appraisers we are tasked with trying to forecast the land market. With unknows in market, government unrest, and not enough data to back the statements we make; we are forced to look back at the past. Every farmer at the coffee shop is trying to forecast the land market as well. Most of the farmers that I have Iowa Land Guy talked with have a positive outlook. They are seeing low interest rates and good crops in the field. When we look to the past, we are reminded of tough times in the 80’s. Looking at the past we were leveraged to a larger extent than we are today. Looking to the past we had higher interest rates and smaller equipment to complete the job. Today we have many positives: outstanding interest rates, paid off farms, improved seed genetics for larger yields, larger equipment, precision tools implemented for cost saving measures, improved tiling systems, resources like never before and…a county that need us. AUCTION VOLUME BY ACRES By no means is the farmland market crashing! 16829 It has remained stable with new buyers entering the 18000 16000 market looking for investments. Farmland will always 12948 14000 have good equity and solid returns. 12000 9627 If you are faced with the decision to sell your 10000 7351 farm for whatever reason, you want to have a trusted 6754 8000 6334 5347 5152 6000 advisor to work with. Make sure you are reaching 3588 2923 2851 4000 out to one of our farmland professionals to help you 2000 518 navigate the decision-making process. 0 Results from the 33 Sales (518 acres) this last month have the average for the state at $45,844 ($88/CSR), high quality ground at $7,495/ acre, and medium quality ground averaging $6,141/ acre. Low quality ground has moved up at an average of $3,377/ acre. We didn’t realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun! This was a favorite quote from our late 4-H Club President, Sammi Long, that we were all missing desperately this year at our county fair. I’d like to think all my 4-H kids realize how many truly great memories they are making every year! I know some of us older 4-H alums can attest it’s really fun reminiscing about our County Fair days! After the swine show, I realized we all have “our people” ... you know the ones I’m talking about. They are the people that always have your back, help you organize your ribbons, take tons of pictures of your kids because your phone died, run to get you headache medicine, make sure ya have chewing gum, help you keep sprayers full for hot pigs in the ring, watch your youngest daughter while ya run back and forth from the show ring, should I keep going? I got choked up just writing this! The realization that you have such an amazing core of people is just plain humbling. Everyone has “these people” and I recommend you take a moment to THANK them! I was reminded by my father the day after the swine show, “Do you realize how awesome it is to know your grandkids have so many people that care about them.”

Friendship isn’t about who you’ve known the longest. It’s about who walked into your life and said, “I’m here for you.” We love “our people” and know we wouldn’t want to walk through life without them! Please continue to pray for our military, our country, and our leaders. Everything is possible to one who has faith. ~ Mark 9:23 God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
