MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, Where did my vacation time go? I guess maybe we had lots of plans for different projects, but we just didn’t allow enough time for each one of them. One of these years we will take a vacation and relax, or at least try to. I was invited to help with the Corndog Kick Off live auction held in the varied industries building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds on July 7th. The live auction had 35 items to auction and the silent auction had around 250 items for a grand total of over a half million dollars raised for the night. Proceeds go to make the Great Iowa State Fair even better. Along with the auction, you have the opportunity to try a bunch of different Iowa State Fair foods. They call it the grazing party. During the grazing party I find my favorites first. Remember, I’m still the ol’ country boy at heart. First to the hot beef sundae, a country boy’s special and it was great as usual. Don’t tell anyone, but I had two of those. I just had to make sure the second one was as good as the first, and it was. When I was finished with that, it was exploration time. I found mac and cheese with bacon. Who in this world turns down bacon? By that time, the lines for about everything I would eat were crazy long. I don’t do waiting or lines very well, so then I just find short lines. If it’s not spicy food, I go for it. I missed the pork chops due to the long line, but the chocolate chip cookie line was real short so that concluded my grazing. A big thank you to all the vendors for their support. Now let me tell you about the live auction. What a crazy good time! We have a great time with this and raise lots of money to help preserve the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Out of this auction came what my idea for great food is. We were well into the auction and Lot 15 came up. I had to do a double

4

take. It was a lobster boil for ten people at the Waterfront Seafood Market in West Des Moines. Needless to say ol’ Mike didn’t have enough capital to buy this lobster fest, but the seafood market in West Des Moines, sounds like a place I need to check out. After the boil sold, brand X came over to me and said The Waterfront Seafood place was a great place to eat, that’s all it took. Dixie and I headed to the “Waterfront” last night for a quiet night. We figured that on a Tuesday night at five o’clock we would have this place mostly all to ourselves. Nope! I think everybody had our idea. We started out with a very refreshing adult beverage, and then to a clam chowder that I thought was deadly. Of course, me being the obnoxious person I am, I wanted to try several different things. I landed on the bourbon glazed salmon. It is fresh Atlantic salmon, mild and buttery, seasoned and grilled with a basting of bourbon and brown sugar glaze. That salmon was deadly good! But, as most of you that have ever dined with me know, I can’t make it easy. I worked to convince our waitress to bring me a couple of samples of their catfish. You just can’t go to a seafood place and not have catfish. Let me just say that it was very good catfish. My side dish was rice with onion and green peppers (there’s a fancy name for this but I don’t know it) it was awesome as well. Let’s just put it this way, when we left I was so full they almost had to roll me out, but it was really really good, and I would recommend it to anyone. Thanks Brand X for the tip and Stout, this place "Greetings" continued on pg 24

If you would like to learn new hedging techniques that can be done in such a way that does not expose you to margin calls via nightly and weekend email and you would like to receive it on a complimentary basis for 45 days that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and respective beef cutout valuations then call Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and give her your email address or simply call in the afternoon after the Cattle by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade market close and for an introductory 5 to 10 minute consultation with the hedge team here at the Board on how we plan to Proverbs 20:29 says The glory of young men is their [physical] manage this trade war environment for livestock. Remember, strength, And the honor of aged men is their gray head [reprehedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT or CME instruments senting wisdom and experience]. This old Proverb and the Cattle still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers charts down below show that the gray haired gentlemen who and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n have been paying through the nose at the Sale Barn for lightweight Cattle may have far more wisdom than folks think. Word on the street is that silver haired gentlemen who are 2nd or 3rd generation Cattlemen still know how to finish Cattle better than anyone. It takes wisdom to succeed in the Cash Cattle business and there is plenty of it around and the older seasoned Cattlemen help the industry stay level headed when standing day in and out at the Sale Barn. And while the Choice Dressed Steer price and Choice Beef Primal Cuts have fallen sharply during the second quarter of the year the Board traded Fat and Feeder Cattle are showing a far different and very bullish picture. Take a look:

The Road Ahead in August for Fat and Feeder Cattle

End of first Quarter to July 16th: Choice Dressed Steer 192.00 down to 174.00 -18.00 Choice Beef Ribs: 369.78 down to 316.82 -52.90 Choice Beef Loins: 296.65 down to 283.86 -13.75 Board Traded Cattle: August Fat Cattle 101.47 up to 107.50 December Fat Cattle 110.02 up to 113.17 August Feeder Cattle 140.42 up to 152.85 The irony of the foregoing? We are in a middle of tradetariff spat with China and other countries that has seen the Chinese currency go down the drain and the Shanghai blue chip stocks drop almost 25% in no time at all. Yet the United States of America that is currently being led by a business minded President stands strong as a rock and our US Dollar stands strong and financial markets measured by the technology stocks of the Nasdaq have set record highs’ for all time. And Texas Roadhouse stock has set new records and looks on course to set another record high for all time. Cattle markets stand strong and show that beef is what’s for dinner. Soybean and Corn markets have taken a hit, however, at the first glimpse of a trade deal with China and our country you might just see the Soybean market recover all of losses’ and more. By the time you read this article it is likely that the Boxed Beef cutouts have put in a very important bottom that will last for a few months or more and exports should continue to fire on all 8 cylinders and help drive Fat Cattle back into the mid 120’s and the Feeders to 170 to 180. Take a look at the charts below and see why a picture is worth a thousand words and, if you are a bona-fide cattle producer or investor you can probably think of many times over the years that you wish you had hedged your Cattle on the dirt or simply taken the hedges’ off.

Prepare Your Calves for Feedlot by Grand Dewell Veterinarian, ISU Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine

Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) continues to be a major health problem for calves that are placed in feedyards. Preconditioning programs have been advocated for years as a method to improve the health of calves prior to delivery to the feedyard. However, vaccination alone is not suffcient to guarantee respiratory health of calves. Cattle producers looking to place calves in a feedyard need to evaluate the whole picture to determine if the calves are good candidates tofeed. NUTRITION Proper nutrition during gestation and in the neo-natal period is vital for calves to start out life properly. Additionally, the calf needs to have good nutrition prior to and after weaning. Traditionally, creep feeding is used as a method to increase calf weight prior to weaning and sale. Other benefits of creep feeding can show up after weaning. Calves that had some creep feed (butare not fleshy) will recover from weaning stress faster and have lower incidence of respiratorydisease. CASTRATION AND DEHORNING "Greetings" continued from pg 4 will work for you to buy supper during the Beef Expo! Most of the county fairs are over by now and hopefully you all got along great. Here in Iowa, a group of livestock folks have come up with what we call the “The All Iowa Show Down.” First you have to win your county fair in any of these classes: market beef, breeding heifers, market lambs, breeding ewes, market goats, breeding goats, market hogs, and breeding gilts. Then you can advance to the district show. If you win at the district show, you advance to the “All Iowa Showdown.“ So, to break it down in simple terms, there will be nine animals in the ring at the Showdown in each species. The winner has beaten approximately 88 county champions in their given species. A lot of work has gone into getting this show off the ground and I want to commend and thank all those that have made it happen. “THE All IOWA SHOWDOWN” will be held

Calves should be castrated and dehorned as early as possible. Waiting until weaning time will increase the stress that calves undergo and negatively impact their immune function. Ideally, calves should be castrated and dehorned by 3 months of age prior to going to breeding pastures. If castration and dehorning were not completed prior to grass turn out, then make sure it happens 30-60 days prior to weaning so that calves have plenty of time to recover. VACCINATION Once the foundation of good health has been established with good management and proper nutrition, the calf is ready to be vaccinated. Take time and spread vaccinations out during the suckling phases. Stacking 3 to 4 vaccines at the same time may overwhelm the calves immune function and impair a proper immune response. Starting your vaccine program early will allow you to build up the immune response. Consider an initial round of respiratory viral vaccines and possibly a pinkeye booster in July. Another viral vaccine along with a bacterial pneumonia vaccine can then be added 30 plus days prior to weaning. MINIMIZE STRESS Finally, look for ways to decrease stress on the calf. As mentioned before, castrating and dehorning should be done at an early age to minimize stress. Another stressful event is weaning itself. Fence-line or two-step weaning has been shown to be less stressful for the calf than abrupt weaning. Additionally, acclimating cattle after weaning using low stress handling practices can improve the health of calves. Look for feedyards that have adopted low stress practices to smooth the transition of your calves from the farm to the feedlot. Thank you to the Iowa Cattlemens Association for permission to print this article! n at the Southern Iowa Fair Grounds in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Plan to be at this event as you will be impressed beyond belief. They have an atmosphere second to none. It makes half time of the Super Bowl look like child’s play. Thanks to everyone involved. The 2018 All Iowa Showdown is at 1 pm on Sunday August 5th, 2018 at the Southern Iowa Fair Grounds in Oskaloosa, IA (see advertisement in this publication) As always we must never forget the folks and their families that fight for our freedom everyday. COMMENTARY

Fly Control by Grand Dewell Veterinarian, ISU Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine

Summer means warmer weather, picnics and BBQs, vacations and flies. Controlling these pesky insects can be irritating. There are many products available for fly control but they need to be applied properly to get results. Often, we tend to apply insecticides when it is convenient for usnot when they will be most effective. Careful planning and application of fly control products is the most cost effective way to manage flies. Insecticide ear tags are often used as a primary method to control flies on cattle during the summer. However, just applying an ear tag in the spring will not provide effective control for the entire summer and may not effectively control all the different flies. The best time to apply insecticide tags is when there are at least 100 horn flies per animal. However, many people apply fly tags in spring prior to pasture turn out or when pre-breeding shots are given. Normally during this time there are insuffcient fly numbers to warrant applying ear

34

Livestock Plus Inc.

tags. Since most fly tags only last 12-15 weeks, application in May will mean that coverage in August and September when fly numbers are relatively high will not be suffcient. It is also important to understand what flies you are wanting to control. Fly tags are primarily designed to control horn flies. Horn flies spend most of their time on the back of adult animals and only leave to lay eggs in fresh cow manure. Therefore, insecticide ear tags are a very effectiveway to control horn flies for the entire herd. Conversely, face flies spend most of their time off the animal resting on vegetation and only visit the animal for brief periods of time to feed. There is alower concentration of insecticide that migrates from the tag to the lower face so most face flies won’t accumulate a toxic dose the short time they are feeding. To help reduce pinkeye problems in calves, insecticide ear tags need to be applied to calves in both ears. Biting flies, such as stable flies and horse flies, can transmit anaplasmosis between cattle. If these are a concern, other fly control methods will be needed. These biting insects are common on body and legs of cows. Insecticide cattle rubs or sprays are more effective for controlling these flies. Additionally, resting and breeding areas with decaying organic matter (manure, vegetationand old feed) need to be cleaned up. To decrease resistance to insecticides rotate classes each year and remove fly tags in the fall. Consider alternative methods such as insect growth regulators in the feed, pour-ons and sprays. Effective fly control requires a concentrated effort to maintain control all season. Thank you to the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association for permission to print this article! n

State Trends ($/Acre)

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com Farmland prices for the month of June were very stable. More acres were sold in the first half of 2018 compared to in 2017 despite the wet weather conditions, increasing interest rates, and lower grain prices (due to the tariffs applied to foreign trade). Iowa lawmakers raised alarms last week with the soybean futures plunging and the Trump administration talking about additional tariffs. A significant amount of farmers are debt free and we believe that is why farmers still have a bullish outlook toward agriculture, as well as why our auction land prices are and will stay strong. The current aging demographic could make for a very large exchange of land in the next 30 years. Results from the 47 auctions this last month have the average for high quality ground at $8,473/acre and medium quality ground averaging $6,137/acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $3,550/acre.

Mitigating Heat Stress to Maintain Pregnancies

by Erika Lundy Extension Beef Specialist Iowa Beef Center

Periods of extreme heat in July and August cause severe stress on cattle and cattlemen. From a benchmarking perspective, approximately 90% of the mature cow herd should become pregnant within the first 63 days of the breeding season. For most spring-calving herds in Iowa, July coincides with this 63-day mark.Preparing cows for the breeding season is a big labor and resource investment for producers, and unfortunately, heat stress can result in loss of pregnancies in both the first and second trimesters.Since we can’t control Mother Nature, being proactive is the best management practice to mitigate heat stress while still maintaining pregnancies and production performance. Water. As a general rule, cattle require 2 gallons of water for every 100 pounds of bodyweight in the summer, and water intake can often double during extreme temperatures. Water consumption is the quickest and most efficient way for cattle to reduce core body temperature. While water access in a grazing situation is often sufficient due to access to ponds or streams, water access in a dry lot or confinement setting can be a problem. Cattle should have a minimum of 2 linear inches/head of water access and at least 3 inches during heat spells. Shade. Research at several universities across the country has shown that cattle provided with shade during the breeding season result in 20-40% improvement in conception rates compared to cattle with no access to shade during the breeding season. While excessive congregation under trees can cause decreased forage productivity and discourages uniform grazing, shade is crucialfor mitigating heat stress. A cow’s ability to avoid direct sunlight helps alleviate rising core body temperatures and is critical as prolonged periods of elevated body temperature can negativelyimpact a cow’s fertility and milk production. Portable or temporary shade structures in pasture settings are becoming more popular as producers recognize the importance of shade. Air movement. The same windbreak structures that provide relief from cold

42

Livestock Plus Inc.

stress in winter months still reduce the amount of air flow this time of year and can further confound heat stress risk. During the summer months, removal of windbreaks that obstruct the prevailing summer breeze promotes air flow and allows for animal cooling. If cows are under roof, make sure buildings have adequate ventilation and air movement. Alter feeding times. During periods of excessive heat, consider moving cows to new paddocks in a rotational grazing system or feeding TMRs to cows in confinement systems during late afternoon or evening. This allows the peak of heat production from fermentation to occur during cooler hours of the night. Likewise, if supplementing cows on pasture, providing the feedstuff in the evening encourages cows to leave the loafing areas and stimulates grazing. Handling cattle. Even low stress cattle handling methods create some stress for cattle and intensifies heat stress risks. Thus, processing cattle on hot days should be avoided and if necessary, completed before mid-morning. While the majority of cows are already settled into pasture for the summer, don’t forget the risk of pregnancy loss associated with transporting bred females between days 5 to 60 of pregnancy. This time frame is critical for embryo development, maternal recognition of pregnancy, and embryo placentation, and the embryo is very susceptible to stress. Other considerations. Other factors can further compound heat stress risk including infected tall fescue and horn and face flies. The endophyte found in infected tall fescue reduces blood flow, restricting the animal’s ability to dissipate heat. Providing supplemental feedstuffs to dilute intake of the endophyte and clipping pastures to remove seed heads, keeping the tall fescue in the vegetative stage, will aid in reducing the toxicosis effects. With excessive flies, cattle group together to combat the irritation, but then they are reducing air flow and building body temperatures, so a good fly control program is essential to reduce the urge for cattle to group together. Lastly, heat stress is not just a concern for lactating cows. While the bull’s job is mostly done for the year at this point on many operations, heat stress can affect sperm production and reducesperm quality for up to 8 weeks. For fall-calving herds, heat stress during the third trimester is also a concern and can lead to earlier than anticipated births and lethargic calves. During times of excessive heat, dehydration can impact newborn calves very rapidly. Be prepared to step-in when needed and have colostrum replacers, supplements, and electrolytes ready. Keep in mind that managing heat stress starts with prevention. Open cows won’t make you money very often, so strive to take extra steps to reduce the risk of heat stress and keep cows bred this summer. that’s convenient.” Bunks should be placed perpendicular to fence lines so calves can bump into feed as they are circling the fences. To prevent calves from competing for bunk space, provide 12 inches of bunk space for hand-fed feeds and 6 to 8 inches of bunk space for self-fed feeds.

Weaning: Avoid these 3 Common Pitfalls Create a weaning plan with flexibility and from a calf’s point of view. Arden Hills, Minn. [June 20, 2018] – Have you defined what success and failure look like in your weaning program? Success might look like live, healthy calves that put on weight with minimal intervention. On the flip side, failure may be calf mortality, sick or stressed calves, a high rate of treatment and less weight to sell. No matter your definitions, having a plan in place can help you avoid weaning pitfalls and, ultimately, failure during this critical time frame. “Weaning shows how successful a producer has been for the past year,” says Chris Forcherio, Ph.D. and beef research manager with Purina Animal Nutrition. “For calves going to market, it’s a producer’s payday. For calves staying Chris Forcherio, Ph.D. in the herd, it’s a time to help Beef Research Manager them get ready for their next with Purina Animal Nutrition. phase of production.” Make plans now to avoid these 3 weaning-time pitfalls: Pitfall #1: The plan is, there is no plan “Too often producers just go out and wean. They find a break in the weather and decide it’s time,” says Forcherio. “The ‘just do it’ mentality may work out, but much like a producer plans for breeding and calving every year, they should plan for weaning.” Develop a flexible plan at least a month in advance. Planning ahead a month gives you time to order feed, work on your health program, order vaccines and more. Part of your health program may include pre-weaning vaccines that can be administered well in advance of weaning day to boost immunity. Pitfall #2: Facility failure Prepare facilities for calves trying to get back to their mothers. If calves are in a fenced area, check and reinforce fences as needed to prevent calves escaping. For corral areas, be sure gates are secured and without gaps. Another aspect of facilities is the environment. Small, tightly confined areas with mud are not ideal for calves. Give calves a stress-free space with plenty of room and grass. Feed bunk placement and space are also critical. “Producers often put feed bunks in a place that’s convenient for them, not for their cattle,” says Forcherio. “Place feed bunks in an area where calves will run into them, not just a place

Pitfall #3: The height of water and hay Beyond making sure calves can find water sources and ensuring there is clean, fresh water available for all calves, another common pitfall is water accessibility. “Make sure your water trough is not too tall,” says Forcherio. “We tend to assume that 400- or 450-pound calves are going to be able to reach the same waterer set up for a 1,200-pound cow when that may not be the case.” The same concept applies to hay feeders. “I often refer to hay out of reach of calves as the ‘devil’s tower of hay in the hay ring,’” says Forcherio. “The hay ring is out, and the round bale is in the hay ring, but the calves can’t reach the tower of hay in the middle.” Check your hay feeders to ensure they aren’t too tall or deep for the shorter necks of calves. If hay is out of reach, do what you can to spread hay from the center toward the outside of the hay ring. Plan to drive feed intake What is Forcherio’s top piece of advice? Have a plan to maximize feed intake. “The end goal is to drive intake and get calves eating the nutrients they need to stay healthy,” says Forcherio. “Anything you can do to set calves up to eat at target intake levels will help them have a higher chance of success.”

COMMENTARY

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

What is the biggest asset to your operation? I think this is a question that we all should be able to answer as livestock producers. In my opinion, the answer to this question is easy, our land. I, by no means, am a land specialist, plant scientist, forage guru or any other fancy term to describe someone that knows a lot about our pastures. In fact, I would venture to guess that most of you are all well more versed on pasture management than I am. But as a cow/calf producer, I do know that the best way to maximize our profit is by producing the most pounds of beef possible each year. Logically, by running more cows and producing more calves, we achieve more pounds of beef which equals more profit. Having more cows, however, is a lot easier said than done. Many of my fellow cattlemen here in the Midwest know the struggles and difficulties that come with expanding our operations. For a lot of us, our pastures are surrounded by corn, bean, and other row crop fields. And we know the price tag attached to that land... So how does someone go about increasing our numbers or increasing the amount of product produced without having to rent a bunch of 5 or 10 acre pastures all across the county? I would venture to guess that most of us could improve our current pastures in some way shape or form. I am as guilty as anyone in getting lazy when it comes to “extra” or “more” work. But over the past couple of years my wife and I have put greater focus on the pasture that we have and looking for ways to increase productivity rather than looking elsewhere for more. For example, we have put more focus in maintaining the quality of our fences, so we can avoid the always dreadful, “your cows are

in my back yard” phone call. Now I would be remiss if I didn’t say that my father is the fencing captain at our operation. Additionally, we have worked hard at becoming more committed to a rotational grazing effort. We aren’t all blessed with pastures and setups that work well with rotation but if you are strapped for grass this summer I would strongly encourage you to look into this practice for next year. We have seen some nice rewards from this even if it does mean we have to move the creep and mineral feeders a few extra times throughout the summer! Weed control is another major issue when it comes to maximizing our acreage. Here in the Midwest weed control is a must because of how prevalent our dreadful enemy “brush” can be. We have always done a good job of mowing our pastures each year, which is great for keeping the brush in-check, but I have tried to do a better job of spraying those pesky thistles before they get too big! On a side note, another great method for thistle control is a young person and a weed hook. This also doubles as a GREAT character builder as well! Sorry kids, I had to do this way too often as a child! Finally, another way to help our pastures is by re-seeding our grass. This is something we have just begun to experiment with. We have had some very good luck with broadcasting some grass seed blends over areas where our grass was starting to get thin. I am not saying we need to pour a bunch of money into re-seeding all of our pastures, but the price of some grass seed can seem pretty small in comparison to land prices. Again, I am about as “green” as they come regarding pasture management, but I thought this would be a good topic for us to start analyzing our pasture situation and thinking about where we can improve come next year. Now that I have said all of this I guess that means I better get out and get them weeds sprayed before you guys stop by! God Bless, Cody

It made me laugh this morning, we are hard core trying to finish all of the county fair projects and one of my good friends, Brian Gonder said to me, “‘Tis the season!” Those words couldn’t be more true, and it’s funny because people that do not participate do not truly understand this week! Every year in my lack of sleep, coma-like state of mind, I always become MORE proud of my ag kiddos, and all the other kids at every county fair that actually put in the time every day with livestock projects and static projects as well! It becomes a family affair when trying to print and polish off projects(I know most of you will be shaking your heads), even grandparents get roped into running to get more paint or helping to print off copies! It’s so worth it and very impressive to see all the projects come together, I wouldn’t change it for anything! With Tucker and Taylor participating and studying for livestock skillathons all the time, I might tease them for being nerds because they study for “fun!” However, in truth, our youth can effectively speak and be more articulate to get our message across to nonlivestock people! Our kids understand the importance of a relationship with livestock. Knowing when to water/feed their animals and read their cues, and being able to speak to the public about their animals is immeasurable to our livestock industries!

In summary, this might be the craziest time of year during county and state fair, but I wonder what the heck I would feel not being absolutely crazed the next few weeks! I’m so very grateful to have these opportunities for the kids, even with the craziness, it’s worth every single moment! On a lighter note, our Baby T (Treva) is quite the little comedian! She thinks it’s so funny that when I ask her to say Mama, she responds with, “Bub-bub-a!” Treva then looks at me and grins and I tell her it’s not funny, she laughs and says it again! It’s kinda comical when I tell her to stop saying Uncle Bubba and she starts looking around to find him and waving. I feel like she’s a lot like her father! Teasing mom... not cool Treva! Please keep our nation and our military in your prayers! As always, be safe in your travels and wishing all the exhibitors during county and state fairs all the luck in the world! Thank you to all who participated in our Facebook photo contest! Stay tuned to WIN more LPI swag! God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com www.livestockplusinc.com
