MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com
Greetings, I’m sure not going to complain about this winter weather this year. As I write this (March 12th, 2020) it is 55 degrees. The wind is blowing pretty good, but there is no snow, so I can take a little wind. I hope that it stays this way ‘til mid-April then straightens up a little. As I said in my last article, I was hoping for something special at the Iowa Beef Expo or The Cattlemen’s Classic. Well the Classic is the winner. As I walked around looking at all the commercial displays, I happened onto the Mycogen Seed display. What really lured me to the Mycogen booth was the Bloody Mary that was being consumed at this display by a customer Doug Keiser and booth worker Jason Welker. With my curiosity running rampant, and after asking about this Bloody Mary, I got
the true scope. They use Pendleton instead of Vodka, and you have to order a beer with it for diluting after a few drinks. It has several olives, a hardboiled egg, a humongous dill pickle spear with olives wrapped in it, a whole spear of celery, bacon wrapped olive, basically a chef salad with a hint of Pendleton and bloody mary mix. It was deadly and very filling. A Bloody Mary masterpiece. After visiting with these guys for a while I discovered these guys are built to have a good time and I must say, they are great sales people. It takes a special person to get me to try an Oreo cookie with a teaspoon of straight horseradish on top.

I bet you are thinking what the heck would you do that for? Well, they say there is a restaurant in Nebraska that serves this all the time as if it was an after dinner mint. It sounds horrible but it actually is not bad, and they kept telling me that all you will taste at the end is chocolate with a little kick. They weren’t wrong. I still haven’t figured why a person would come up with this, but we sure had fun with it for an hour or so. These guys were getting folks to try this as they walked by. I still say that to sell this, you must be a

Dearest Heavenly Father, We could really use your strength and guidance in our lives right now. We look to you today as individuals, as communities and as a country to help us fight against both the sickness caused by the Covid-19 virus as well as the fear that seeks to overwhelm our faith in You. We ask for your protection for our servicemen and women who put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect us. We ask for your healing for those who are sick in the hospital and for your presence with our loved ones who are quarantined in their homes or at a nursing home. We ask for patience with our children who are stuck at home from school and for your strength for our health care workers who are working overtime as they take care of those who are ill. We ask for your guidance for our government officials at all levels as they seek to make wise decisions that will benefit both people and the economy. Help us to remember that no matter how unsure our future looks at this time, you have promised that nothing in all creation can separate us from your Love. Please bless us with peace and safety as we seek to follow you in the days ahead. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

If you are going to try it at home, you have to put the horseradish on the top of the cookie, then put the whole cookie in your mouth at once, chew and swallow/eat it. I will be expecting your reviews on this!!! And then, as we were having a rest period between sales, I got to get the Cadillac of desserts, before supper; peach cobbler fresh off the Trager grill, topped with ice cream. It doesn’t get any better. The Classic and its board members went above and beyond. Thanks Nebraska! I had a blast! Next, I have to give a shout out to Erica Styles. I arrived at the Styles sale the day before the sale, just like I have done for the last ten plus years. Erica, bless her heart, had pork loin, a baked potato, and to top it off, peach pie. Awesome pre-sale meal with great friends. Thanks to the Styles Family! Also, another pre-sale supper that I have been attending for probably 10 years is at GG Genetics put on by Mason and Diane Fleenor and crew. This is a special supper deal. It boasts adult

beverages, certified Angus, and Diane’s potatoes and fixings. The stories that are told around this supper table, and the meat cutting table are unbelievable. I had a great time! Thanks to all involved. The steak was deadly!!! Last shout out is to Rob and Mindy Campfield. They asked me to a steak feed the other night. I always try to be timely at these functions, but arrived a half hour early due to a lack of errands to run in Des Moines. Rob had put on some kabobs for his boys to eat before the steaks and the boys were kind enough to share. They were deadly. I could have eaten them instead of the steaks! The kabobs were seasoned to a perfection and prepared perfectly. Thanks Rob, Mindy, Rowdy, and Lucky! I had a great time. As always, please keep our leaders, and all the people that make this country great, along with our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION
Iowa Policy Passes at NCBA The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association returned from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association victorious, after garnering enough support to pass two new interim cattle marketing policies at the national level. Both policies are intended to provide more information and leverage to Iowa’s cattle producers. The first policy advocates for a “Next Day Cattle Weights” report from USDA, similar to the report published daily in the hog industry. This change would allow the industry to more quickly see national carcass weight fluctuations through
USDA’s Agriculture Marketing Service. The second policy is related to formula transactions, which have been increasing at an alarming rate over the past few years. More than 50% of Iowa’s cattle are marketed through negotiated cash, providing ample price discovery in the region. Other regions of the U.S., however, trade less than 10% through negotiated trade. The policy brought forward by Iowa’s Feedlot Council advocates for NCBA to support initiatives to increase transparency in formula transactions and to require Livestock Mandatory Reporting to publicly
report the details of formula transactions including the net price, base price, and any premiums. “Market transparency is the biggest challenge that this industry has been facing and we have to work with others to find solutions together,” says Matt Deppe, CEO of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. “And it doesn’t matter what type of marketing transaction you prefer, more transparency of even historic data like this will assist producers as it relates to available data to better leverage market opportunities.”
2020 YCLP participants spend day at the Capitol The Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) participants met with legistors and regulatory agencies at the Capitol on February 19. The 2020 YCLP class is representative of the entire beef cattle industry-cow/calf, backgrounders, seedstock, and feedlot. The producers in this class come from a variety of backgrounds with varying expertise, but they all share one unifying sentiment: the beef cattle industry is their livelihood. The day began with a legislative session overview provided by ICA’s lobbyist, Kellie Paschke. Then, Rep. Megan Jones, House District 2, shared her experiences as a legislator and described the work that gets accomplished through committees during legislative session. Then we headed to the steps of the House and Senate chambers. Each YCLP participant had the opportunity to engage
with a legislator representing their district. Governor Reynolds and her Agriculture Policy Advisor, Jake Swanson, met with the group in the Robert Ray Conference Room. YCLP participants discussed the value of water quality and conservation, the need for clarity on rules and regulations, concerns with land acquisition, and the economic impact of agriculture in rural Iowa. YCLP also met with Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Director Kayla Lyon, and Deputy Director Alex Moon, to discuss how the IDNR is working to build and maintain positive working relationships with producers. Discussion included grazing opportunities for livestock producers, compliance with environmental regulations, and how the department works with other agencies and stakeholders to protect natural resources in the state. Tammy Nebola of Iowa Finance Authority provided an overview of the
Beginning Farmer Loan Program, Beginning Farmer Tax Credit, and Loan Participation Program. Many YCLP participants have utilized these tools to acquire farmland, equipment, and livestock. Lastly, we wrapped up the day with a visit from Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Julie Kenney. She highlighted the important work of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS). YCLP participants asked questions regarding international trade, the repeal and replacement of WOTUS, rulemaking regarding labeling of alternative proteins, and foreign animal disease preparedness and response. Our work at the Capitol was a great example of ICA’s mission in action--to grow Iowa’s beef business through advocacy, leadership, and education. The YCLP participants did an outstanding job representing the beef cattle industry and advocating for our interests. April 2020

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION
Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Membership: The Cattle Industry’s Vaccine Infectious disease has been in the news a lot lately. It’s flu season, coronavirus continues to spread worldwide, and the full effects of African Swine Fever are yet to be seen. Accompanying these topics is often a discussion about vaccines. We stumbled onto the idea of immunity and vaccines recently in a staff meeting, when someone used the phrase “we are not immune.” We were discussing how we expect that our neighbors here in Iowa will support our family farms, but it seems like every time we turn around, there’s a new threat to the growth of Iowa’s beef industry. In this case, we were specifically referring to an anti-CAFO bill that was introduced in the Iowa legislature, but last month, we could have applied that statement to the Benton County “meatless meals” lunch training. Even though we are in one of the most agriculturally productive states in our nation, our industry and our producers are
not immune to over-regulation, activists and other pressures that challenge our future. We are not immune. Or are we? Although attacks continue to happen, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association acts as a good dose of preventative medicine, preventing the spread of many types of “infections”. Last year, several bills were introduced with the same goal as the one referenced earlier: limit the growth of livestock confinement barns. But those bills quickly died in committee, before being voted on by the legislature. That didn’t happen by accident. Those bills didn’t stand a chance because we’ve been building up antibodies for years. Longstanding relationships between our lobbyist, legislators, and beef producers help ensure that our industry is protected, and those relationships are facilitated
through the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. For nearly 50 years, this organization has worked to ensure that hard-working cattlemen and women have a voice at the state legislative and regulatory level. There’s a meme going around facebook right now that says, “Parents who don’t vaccinate their kids never had a pen of sick cattle and it shows.” Don’t forget to vaccinate your farm against the many threats ICA is fighting on your behalf every day. We can’t do what we do without the support of your membership investment. By the time you read this column, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association will have held two events at the capitol - one for our Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program and one for our general membership. But if you couldn’t make it to the lobbying events, don’t worry. We were there on your behalf, treating current “infections” and working to prevent future ones.
Iowa Cattlemen meet with Senator Joni Ernst On Friday, February 14, nineteen Iowa cattlemen and women met with Sen. Joni Ernst to discuss issues that impact the beef cattle industry in Iowa. The roundtable discussion was an open and engaging conversation with Sen. Ernst and producers from Carroll, Shelby, Harrison, Audubon and Pottawattamie counties, representing the feedlot, cow/ calf, and seedstock sectors of the beef cattle industry. Key topics discussed included the need for more transparency and negotiated cash trade in major cattle feeding states, reauthorization of Livestock Mandatory Reporting,
the Packers and Stockyards investigation of beef pricing margins post-Holcomb fire, international trade, alternative proteins and labeling, and the repeal and replacement of Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS). “The issues we are talking about today impact our livelihoods. As producers, we’re doing more with less. We take care of the land and our natural resources so we can continue our family legacy with the next generation,” said Jennifer Carrico, Membership Coordinator for ICA. Sen. Ernst agreed and stated, “Our farmers and ranchers are some of the best environmentalists we have.” This is
why she is continuing her work with other congressional leaders to codify a definition of “Waters of the U.S.,” which would give greater certainty to farmers, workers, businesses, and landowners in the future. “Thank you, Sen. Ernst, for taking time to meet with Iowa cattlemen and women,” said Dick Godfrey, ICA President, “We appreciate your support of the beef cattle industry--whether it be through international trade, the repeal of burdensome environmental regulations, or ensuring independent producers have a level playing field to market their cattle.”

preparation put in prior to calving, the easier your calving season should be. Now is the time to make sure your spring calving herd is in good body condition, you have the right equipment on hand, and calving areas are prepared. IMPORTANCE OF BODY CONDITION The ideal body condition score (BCS) for a spring calving brood cow is 5 (on a 10 point scale). “A BCS of 5 allows the cow to deliver the nutrition needed by the fetus to develop without “robbing” the cow herself of key nutrients,” explains Mike Peacock, Southern States Livestock Feed Sales Manager. “As a result, calves are born with more strength, including brown fat to sustain body heat, and stronger lifetime immune systems, including the ability to fight off causes of early calf mortality,” adds Peacock. Cows in higher body condition typically have more immunoglobulins in their colostrum then thinner cows, which gives the calves a greater level of disease protection. If you have a cow with a BCS less than 5 it’s not too late to improve her score. As the cows are in their last trimester of pregnancy, it’s even more important to offer them high quality feeds at this point. If FYI they have a score lower than 5, consider increasing their daily feed intake in addition to offering them a higher quality feed. The time to try to improve your brood cow’s BCS is prior to calving. Once she calves, it will be difficult to improve her score as nutrient needs during lactation are very high. Reprinted from www.southernstates.com Remember a good BCS not only makes calving easier, but it also helps your cow return to estrus sooner and breed back within an acceptable time period of less than 90 days Benjamin Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are post-calving. preparing to fail.” When it comes to calving the time to prepare isn’t when the first cow starts calving, but rather "Preparing" continued on pg 20 weeks or months before the first calf is born. 10 Ideas to Improve your Cattle Herd’s Health This Year By: W. Dee Whittier, DVM, MS, Extension Veterinarian, Beef Cattle College of Veterinary Medicine, VA Tech www.drovers.com
Like in any other part of our cattle operations, resolving to do some things better for the health programs we have on our beef cattle operations might pay us dividends. So here is my list of top 10: 1. Inspect cattle often to look for ones with health problems. Probably nothing else improves the odds for a good outcome from a health event more than early discovery and treatment. 2. Develop a relationship with your veterinarian. He/she is a lot more likely to make the trip to help you with your midnight calving if you’ve used them to buy some products and perform some routine vet work. Investing in veterinary inputs into keeping our high-priced cattle healthy is a sound financial practice. 3. Use your veterinarian to help you with sick animals. We have sometimes developed a mindset that we couldn’t afford a vet when cull cows were worth $200. With $1000 cull cows and weaned calves, an investment in veterinary care for beef cows makes a lot more sense. 4. Prevent exposure to any disease you can. This means carefully considering how you introduce herd additions. It often also means thinking about how you feed and manage calving cows so that scour bugs don’t build up in your calving

lots or barns. 5. Administer dewormers with a plan. Not every deworming makes economic or control sense. For example, midsummer deworming of spring born calves and two spring dewormers given at the right times to yearling replacements and stocker calves can give returns of $10 to $30 per dollar spent on a dewormer. 6. Give calving cows lots of attention. If there appears to be a problem, examine them early. Getting cows and calves successfully through the calving season has never paid bigger dividends. 7. Give newborn calves lots of attention. National figures show newborn losses to be nearly 5%. Dealing with chilling, inadequate colostrum consumption, too little milk, mismothering, scours and pneumonia has never been more important. 8. Vaccinate with a plan. Poorly chosen or improperly timed vaccinations may afford no benefit and even make things worse if vaccines add to the stress of already sick cattle. Well timed vaccines against the right diseases give huge advantages in keeping cattle healthy. 9. Make a plan to market the vaccination program that you have given. Calf buyers will pay premiums for well vaccinated calves if they marketed through a program like VQA or on the Tel-O-Auction where the vaccination information can be passed along and there is a way to get a competitive bid. 10. Follow the rules in using antibiotics to treat cattle. Not only are many antibiotics expensive, but their use is a concern to our consumers. Consumers generally agree that it is good to treat animals with infections with antibiotics. But they want us to be sure we follow withdrawal times and only treat when necessary. Applying good health management practices in our herds help insure a profit, make cattle production more satisfying and help out the whole beef industry by maintaining our image as responsible keepers of cattle. n

NEWS RELEASE
Bowlin, Larsons Inducted into Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame The late Tom Bowlin of Indianola and David and the late Liz Larson are the newest members of the Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame. They were inducted at a ceremony during the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association (IHBA) banquet at the Iowa Beef Expo. The Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame honors people who have had a significant impact on the breed in the state. Biographies of the inductees follow: Tom Bowlin Tom Bowlin of Indianola was a third generation horned Hereford breeder. The first calf he showed as a young boy was a Hereford heifer he bought from his grandpa. The heifer won the county fair and when Tom sold her after the fair for $150, he used that money to buy another Hereford to show the next Dixie Bowlin (right) accepts the Iowa Hereford year…and continued Hall of Fame award for her late husband, Tom, to do so until he from Iowa Hereford Breeders Association President Bill Goehring (left) graduated from high school. Tom started Middle River Herefords with his wife Dixie and they raised registered horned Herefords for decades. Tom had six children who showed Herefords for 19 years straight with great success, including many champions at the state junior show. They also had grand champion bull at the Iowa State Fair and grand champion market steer at the Warren County Fair. Cattle were Tom’s passion and he had a good eye for them. It got to the point that when he found some he thought worth buying, all he had to do was write the check then stop by the local bank to sign the paperwork. He really knew his cattle and was conscientious about medications. He was well known for breeding for excellent EPD’s and he knew how to raise and pick champions. Tom recognized the value of young people to the Hereford breed and he served two different stints as advisor to the Iowa Junior Hereford Association. His children were involved in the Iowa Junior Hereford Association and the girls were Iowa Hereford Queens. Tom continued to raise Herefords after the kids were done showing and sold them to 4-H exhibitors in Warren County. One of the last purchases he made was a mini-Hereford for his grandson Waylon, whom he taught to show. Most of the sales from his herd were to kids for youth projects. Those who worked with him credit him for his fairness in dealing with people and his compliments of others’ cattle Tom served on the board and was president of the Iowa Hereford Association (IHA). When the IHA and the Iowa Polled Hereford Association merged in 1999, he was elected as the first president of the new Iowa Hereford Breeders Association. He was a unifying force for the fledgling organization, gaining respect and cooperation from both horned and polled breeders. For four years, from 2000 to 2003, Tom was a manager of the Hereford sale at the Iowa Beef Expo. He strove to improve the

quality of the offering, calling it the “Genetic Excellence” sale, which has since evolved into today’s “Iowa Select Hereford Sale.” For 40 years, Tom’s “day job” was as a lineman for MidAmerican Energy. After retiring, he worked three more years as an inspector for the company, a position that allowed him to get out in the country and see cattle, tractors and farms all day. Tom served in the Marines from 1967-72. An expert rifleman, he was also the best typist in his unit, so he spent most of his time aboard a ship. His involvement in the Indianola community included American Legion Post #165, Warren County Cattlemen and athletic boosters. He went on several County Fair tractor rides and enjoyed driving his tractors in parades. Not wanting to endure another cold Iowa winter, in late 2017 Tom sold his remaining herd of 12 cow-calf pairs at a special sale at the Knoxville Sale Barn. His plans were to buy some more in the spring and re-start the herd. Unfortunately, just 10 days later, in January 2018, Tom passed away unexpectedly at the age of 68. His legacy still remains entwined with Hereford cattle. His memorial fund awards the exhibitor of the champion Warren County Hereford heifer each year so that they can go buy that next Hereford…and so on and so forth. David & Liz Larson With his induction, David Larson of Albia became a secondgeneration Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame member – his father, Lennart Larson, was inducted in 1993. Dave’s parents started with horned cattle, then bought their first Polled Hereford bull, Supreme Anxiety 38, in 1952 from Herman Dave Larson (right) accepts the Iowa Hereford Wurster. That worked Hall of Fame award for himself and his late wife, out so well that they Liz, from Iowa Hereford Breeders Association continued with the President Bill Goehring (left). polled genetics. Dave showed heifers in 4-H, but didn’t start his own herd until 1970 after serving in the U.S. Army from 1965-67. He was a military policeman in Korea for 19 months. His Army connections served him well in his post-military life. He and another Army buddy from Des Moines visited another Army friend who had relocated from Ellenburg, Washington, to British Columbia after buying a ranch. Dave decided to stay in Canada for awhile and do some rodeoing and also took a job feeding cattle at a ranch in interior British Columbia. The bitter winter cold that froze his eyebrows soon got the best of him and he traded those conditions in for a job as a groom at a racetrack. It was while he was there that he met his future wife, Liz, a native Canadian who was working at Simon Fraser University and also involved in rodeo. After their marriage, they returned to Iowa, where Dave went into partnership with his father for several years. They then started their own herd. Liz was a “city girl” who knew nothing about cows, but she jumped right in to the operation. She went to A.I. school and ended up doing all their A.I. work while Dave was in charge of heat detection. The Larsons managed the Southeast Iowa Polled Hereford Association Sale at Oskaloosa for a few years, during which time it was moved to a different facility and earned better prices. Dave has served on the board of both the Iowa Polled Hereford Association (IPHA) and the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association. Both he and Liz were on the planning committees for the 1984 and 1996 Polled Hereford Junior Nationals held in Des Moines, with Dave being IPHA president during the 1984 event. He was also on the IPHA board when the arrangements were made to

"IHBA" continued from pg 30 move the Gammon Barn to the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Dave was on the Iowa Beef Breeds Council in 1985 and was involved in a lot of the early planning for the Iowa Beef Expo during its formative years. Liz was secretary-treasurer of the Iowa Polled Hereford Association and also editor of the quarterly Iowa Polled Hereford News and the IPHA directory. Liz was very involved with the Iowa Poll-ettes and was named 1987 Iowa Poll-ette of the Year, going on to be runner-up for National Poll-ette of the Year. She was active in the Monroe County Cattlemen, with one of her big responsibilities being lining up the group’s volunteers for the Iowa Cattlemen’s Beef Quarters each year at the State Fair. She was named to the Monroe County Cattlemen’s Hall of Fame in 2014. In addition, she helped establish the Monroe County Cowbelles and was district director for the Iowa Cattlewomen. Dave was among the first Hereford breeders to sell cattle to Certified Hereford Beef and has received several Gold CHB awards. He likes to get carcass data on his cattle, especially from

facilities that can trace the data back to the animal’s sire and dam. He is proud that his daughter Lisa had the champion carcass at the county fair for eight years and his grandchildren matched that feat for another 7-8 years. Dave and Liz promoted Herefords at the Cornbelt Cow-Calf Conference in Ottumwa for many years, starting when they were publicizing the Southeast Iowa PHA sale. Dave continues to help his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Mark Keeton, staff the booth for the IHBA. Both the Larson children, Lisa and Dan, were involved with the Iowa Junior Polled Hereford Association and Lisa was Iowa Polled Hereford Queen in 1990. In addition to their cattle activities, the entire Larson family participated in rodeoing. Dan, who died in a car accident in 2001, was an accomplished bull rider; for several years the family sponsored the Dan Larson Memorial Bull Riding event in Ottumwa. Liz passed away on June 21, 2018. One of her non-livestock passions was Mary Kay Cosmetics, for which she was a consultant for nearly 30 years. n

Current FARMLAND Market Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.
State Trends ($/Acre)
David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer
Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com There has been a lot of activity this past month. Most farmers are feeling the warmer weather and starting to gear up for spring. Conferences for agriculture are happening and farmers are being educated on new techniques and practices for the 2020 growing season. Just recently we have seen some 1% moves in the stock market. The global economy still has some uncertainty, but locally I can tell you that land prices are solid. We have seen a decrease in acres sold at auction for the past few months, but what has sold has sold steady to stronger. We have more farms that are being listed and the volume has grown since last month. We see an increase in Farm Retirement Sales and equipment hitting the market. There is a surge in Online Only Farmland Auctions, and I would say we will see that market grow 30% in the next year. I think that farmers are ready or almost ready to buy farms online only. I personally still like to shake the hands of the farmers at the auction and build relationships, but I feel that our market is moving in that direction.

Managing Cow/Calf Pairs With Excess Spring Moisture by Olivia Amundson SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist Written collaboratively by Taylor Grussing, former SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist and Olivia Amundson extension.sdstate.edu
Rain, snow and warming temperatures are making their way again this winter as future forecasts indicate another wet spring. However, with last year’s flooding we’re a little wiser on how to tackle the predicted flooding. Last year’s flooding, blizzard conditions and excess snow wreaked havoc on livestock producers in South Dakota. While there is little one can do to stop the melting snow and rising waters, we can try to manage around the water by preparing alternative livestock and feeding areas. First, take a look around the whole operation and find the highest ground possible. This could be a hay field, food plot, or even tree belt areas. Temporary fencing may need to be used to make these areas work. If natural elevation is not available, creating temporary mounds in pastures or yards may be needed. Choose an area with the least water traffic and build up mounds with either soil, manure, old bedding, or broken hay bales. Next, try to haul feed out of low areas to more accessible ground before water starts rising and mud shows up. While most of our ground is still frozen, we can levy the frozen mornings to move hay out of lower areas before the warmth of the day sets in. Feeding cattle plenty of dry forages will help them maintain proper rumen function during stressful conditions. If forage is moist due to rain or snow, increase feeding amounts to adjust for higher moisture levels. Avoid offering grains to livestock who have been off feed, as digestive upset may occur with high starch rations. Set up feeding areas as close to livestock as possible to limit transportation problems and use temporary fence to portion off feed if needed. Calving season is underway for many; therefore, providing care for younger livestock adds another level
Let us help you have the best sale of the year! to mud management. Mud is the enemy of good health and young babies may need new health care compared to other years. Visit with the local Veterinarian to see if extra health products at birth may be worth giving calves. Stock up on extra supplies to care for these new babies including: colostrum replacers or supplements, milk replacers and bottles, towels, blankets, and plenty of clean bedding and wind protection just for calves. Stock trailers can be a place to keep calves out of the mud and elements temporarily. Also, creep gates and bale feeders can be used to make bedding areas for calves and keep cows out. Mud can provide many challenges during the calving season. It’s important that during a muddy spring we take action to provide the cow/calf pair with adequate dry bedding to prevent cows from laying down and covering their udder and flank in mud. Another area cows attract mud to the udder is around the bale feeder especially if footing around the feeder is wet and muddy. Moving the bale feeder regularly to dry, clean ground helps minimize this issue. If moving the bale feeder is not an option, pack straw or other clean material around feeder to keep clean and dry. Mud, along with manure can harbor bacteria and other pathogens which pose detriment to the young calf. Many times, this mixture of mud and manure leads to dirty udders. Since calves use smell and scent to locate udder and teats, excess mud build up can hinder this process. As the calf struggles to find the teat and nuzzle the dirty flank they put themselves at risk of ingesting these pathogens found in the mud and manure mixture. Calves that are born on muddy, wet ground are also at greater risk to naval illness, joint illness, and scours. Calving on dry ground is always safer as calves are less likely to pick up scour-causing bacteria. If the umbilical stump of the calf comes into contact with contaminated ground or bedding prior to drying and being sealed off it offers opportunity for bacteria to enter. If adequate dry bedding is in short supply or unavailable, applying an iodine or disinfectant several times until the cord is dried will help prevent potential naval infections. If naval is left untreated the infection can potentially enter the bloodstream and cause septicemia or affect the joints. Lastly, make sure a current inventory of all classes of livestock is available. If fences become washed out or cattle wander, informing locals on how many animals you need help finding is important. Also, if livestock losses need to be turned into the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP), you will have an updated inventory on hand. n

modation of the Fed---with good intent to help the economy survive Coronavirus- will likely slice the daylights out of the purchasing power of the children and grandchildren of Cattle producers in this current age. Mr. Trump is doing a good job of being ‘business-minded’ in running the country and creating situations that foster job growth, yet the massive deficits at the same time have to keep old timer economists with wisdom by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade awake at night. What did Grandpa always say? “Sonny, you can’t spend more money than you take in”
The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets
This last month of March was nothing short of a barn-burner. The Coronavirus spread with some good wind fanning the flames. The stock market then tanked as the dominoes began to fall and show the power of the stock market in a global economy to influence just about every market known to man. Adding to the chaos the Federal Reserve for the first time in over 100 years did back to back interest rate cuts ‘between Federal Reserve FOMC meetings’, which said actually spooked the markets even more. Why? The old saying on Wall Street is ‘the Fed must know something we don’t, otherwise why did they not wait till the Federal Reserve meeting to drop rates?’ And adding insult to injury there was a price war started by OPEC when Russia refused to ‘go along’ with massive daily cuts to crude production and only time will tell who wins that energy market chess game. Ironically the last several weeks saw the biggest one-day rallies in Choice Box Beef in history with moves of 12.00 to 16.00 cwt per day. Major grocers ran out of beef and wholesale prices spiked north as if the number of vegetarians dropped by 90% and the number of steak houses across the United States tripled. The Federal Reserve? They have stepped up to the plate and rolled over and given President Trump the near zero rates he has been wanting for some time now. Here is the significance of the Federal Reserve at this point in time. They have represented that they will inject 1.5 Trillion dollars into the system by purchasing mortgage-backed securities and Five, Ten and Thirty Year Treasuries to keep the market liquid and rates down to facilitate economic growth. The problem with this? The amount of money that the Fed has flooded the market with is not backed by gold and there is the chance that the higher inflation rates that the Federal Reserve has as ‘mandate’ of approximately will end up being 4 to 7% and if the markets believe the rate of inflation is ‘too high’ then it may backfire and the stock markets around the world tank anyway. The plum line on inflation rates and monetary policy is a delicate one. Furthermore this massive monetary accom-

Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee
As spring comes on, I am finally starting to feel settled back in Wisconsin! I found a great home for my cows with the Huisheere family that might just love them as much as I do. The new gig with LPI has been great. It makes my job easy when I get to work with such great breeders like 2K Angus and North Grove Charolais. I somehow also managed to meet my girlfriend Hillary who is both better looking and smarter than me! A few weeks ago, we attended the Rock County Beef Producers where I was elected to serve on the board. This is a great group of young progressive cattlemen that are eager to help educate the community about our industry. We host a prospect show that lands on April 11th this year. They have an annual steak dinner that is open to the public and are involved with the Wisconsin Cattleman’s Association. RBP also donates to the Rock County Agriculture Ambassadors which is a group that goes into classrooms all around the county to help educate children about agriculture, animal care and where their food comes from. I look forward to working with the youth and cattle producers here in Rock County and throughout the country. As our country faces the challenges with the Covid-19 virus, I pray that every one stays safe and healthy. We will get through these troubled times with help from our Lord, our families and each other. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the Livestock Plus family as we work though this difficult spring sale season God Bless, Eric “Lefty” Lee

If you are a first or 2nd generation Cattle Producer then hedging will be important as the markets will likely swing wide through the Presidential election and since the Fed has made it clear that they want inflation you may want to talk with us about placing some of your hedge capital not just on Cattle Hedges with Bull or Bear Option Spreads but you may also want to give consideration to also using Gold Bull Call Spreads that if debit based and have no ‘naked calls’ through expiration may help you hedge additional exposure [without margin calls of outright futures] to either the global economy falling apart or to massive inflation that makes your cattle op’ expenses out of control and in need of hedging. You can call Michelle White here at the Board in Chicago at 312.756.0931 and she will make sure you get [via email] the 312 Market Advisory for 60 days so you can educate yourself on Cattle hedging at a higher level via Fats and Feeders and the use of stock indexes’ and gold markets to add some gunpowder to your Cattle operation’s hedging in an uncertain world. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle futures or any other CBOT CME instrument still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. Again, talk with us and educate yourself through the internet material offered by the Chicago Board or by stopping by for a Friday afternoon-evening tutorial on the white board in our conference room. n

Well…I don’t think any of us envisioned our spring turning out like the way it seems to be unfolding. I am still having trouble wrapping my mind around all that is going on in the world and this country – businesses being required to close their doors, schools closing, graduations cancelled, sporting events non-existent…it’s crazy. Are we overreacting? Time will only tell. Regardless of all the cancellations and shutdowns, one thing remains steadfast – the livestock and farming communities’ commitment. In the midst of it all, the animals still need to be fed and the crops still need to be planted. I am proud as always to be a part of this community. We will get through this. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay positive. Keep the faith. God Bless, Cody

COMMENTARY
For Pete’s Sake by Anthony Peoples
My Way My son is a picky little guy who seems to only want to fall asleep to the Frank Sinatra song “My Way”. I’ve come to really like this song, the chorus, the lyrics and last but not least, the peace it brings. Kidding. He’s learning to crawl as we speak, and for a kid of such large stature, he’s having a good go of it. He has two little teeth and a good appetite, along with a quick temper- which he no doubt gets from his mother. It’s neat to see him go about things in ‘his way’ and to see him grow so fast. I sure hope his sleep improves soon, it will be interesting to see the correlation of that and his mother’s temper. Maybe one will improve with the other. I doubt I leave this issue laying around the house. As Steve Erwin used to say “Danger, Danger, Danger”. Hope everyone has a great start to the spring!

As I write this, my news app keeps popping up on my phone and I just dread discovering what depressing news is next. The past few days have been so nerve wracking, more because we just don’t know what will happen next with the COVID-19. I’m choosing to say this over and over ... In you, Lord my God, I put my trust. Psalm 25:1
Instead of dwelling on what is out of my control, I thought I’d share some fun Rohrig Family happenings. Treva, our youngest, and possibly the very heart of our family, has been so funny lately copying mama as I pace while talking on the phone, playing doctor with all the cats and trying soooo hard to dance like big sister. Her personality is really starting to shine! Our Middle T, Taylor, has been quite the busy young lady with dance, first communion classes and even attempting to judge her first classes of swine. I have a feeling with all this time off school they will have all their show pigs picked out for sure! Several years ago I started notebooks with Tuck and Tay, they are not to tear any pages out, I write them notes, doodles and usually tell them how proud I am, and sometimes if I’m upset with their actions. Then they write back when they feel like it. I think these notebooks are some of my most cherished things. Taylor has been writing a lot lately about things and writing some of her favorite Bible verses, and that makes my heart so happy. I hope one day these notebooks will mean as much to them as they are for me now! Tuck had just started track before school dismissed for spring break and then the Coronavirus shut down. Thank goodness for the farm and the pigs to keep him busy, along with watching his baby sister! Before the seriousness of the whole situation of COVID-19, we were all eating at the dinner table and discussing what they had to do in China and Italy when Tuck just serious as heck says, “It’s okay, Hank Williams, Jr. says a country boy can survive.” Matt and I had to laugh, and now we pray he is right! So, I just wanted to give you a quick update on my scary pics from last month’s article of the skin cancer removal on my cheek. You’ll always be able to see my lovely scar but I’d say that plastic surgeon is pretty talented and I appreciate his effort! Please continue to keep our military, our leaders and our nation in your prayers! Remember also to keep our small businesses in mind when shopping and eating out, let’s keep them going and let them know they have support. I am hopeful that many will turn to our Lord in this time of crisis for our nation. Give your burdens to the Lord and He will take care of you. ~Psalm 55:22 Heidi Sorensen Rohrig • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com www.livestockplusinc.com
