MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings! I always start this column with my half-witted weather report; well as of now muddy lots covered with snow is not my idea of a good time. I can take adverse stuff, but this is over the top. I say either muddy or snow, hot or cold, but just pick one and lets go with it, but not all at once. I had a very nice evening dining with a state representative, a construction worker from Utah, and a bartender from Wyoming. What was really amazing is the guy from Utah is from just north of Beaver, Utah. That is the location of one of my favorite western cowmen Gib Yardley. We both had stories to tell about that area. Then, the bartender and I were visiting about a steak house I use to eat at east of Torrington, Wyoming. You had to go down a long lane, around a couple piles of hay, and by a silage pile to get to one of the most amazing steakhouses and best ribeyes I have ever had. Can someone tell me the name of that place and is it still going? Most of you can guess, I’m the sire of the State Representative, Ray “Bubba” Sorensen. We were headed to the airport as he was headed to Washington DC. It was a great fatherson outing and Johnny’s Italian Steak House was the place. The atmosphere was second to none; the company was interesting to say the least, and the adult beverages were straight up great. Now to the dining experience. First was the potato soup with a bunch of bacon on the top. Bacon is always good with anything.

Johnny’s Steak Deburgo was my entreé of choice for the evening. The menu read; our signature steak beef tenderloin medallions, roasted garlic, basil, oregano cream sauce. Not sure what all that means, but I can tell you the steak was great, the garlic-mashed taters were deadly, and a great time was had by all. Folks, this is an exciting time of year! We are excited and impatiently awaiting the National Western Stock Show, Iowa Beef Expo, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, and every sale in-between. Lots of miles will be traveled. PLEASE be careful in your travels and have a great time. Please pray for our political leaders, that they may lead our country in the correct direction with as little squabbling across party lines as possible. As always please keep our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION...

How Much Hay Will a Cow Consume? This week’s snowy weather has reminded cow calf producers that winter hay feeding has begun or will begin shortly. Estimating forage usage by cows is an important part of the task of calculating winter feed needs. Hay or standing forage intake must be estimated in order to make the calculations. Forage quality will be a determining factor in the amount of forage consumed. Higher quality forages contain larger concentrations of important nutrients so animals consuming these forages should be more likely to meet their nutrient needs from the forages. Also cows can consume a larger quantity of higher quality forages. Higher quality forages are fermented more rapidly in the rumen leaving a void that the animal can re-fill with additional forage. Consequently, forage intake increases. For example, low quality forages (below about 6% crude protein) will be consumed at about 1.5% of body weight (on a dry matter basis) per day. Higher quality grass hays (above 8% crude protein) may be consumed at about 2.0% of body weight. Excellent forages, such as good alfalfa, silages, or green pasture may be consumed at the rate of 2.5% dry matter of body weight per day. The combination of increased nutrient content AND increased forage intake makes high quality forage very valuable to the animal and the producer. With these intake estimates, now producers can calculate the estimated amounts of hay that need to be available. Using an example of 1200 pound pregnant spring-calving cows, lets assume that the grass hay quality is good and tested 8% crude protein. Cows will voluntarily consume 2.0% of body weight or 24 pounds per day. The 24 pounds is based on 100% dry matter. Grass hays will often be 7 to 10% moisture. If we assume that the hay is 92% dry matter or 8% moisture, then the cows will consume about 26 pounds per day on an “as-fed basis”. Unfortunately we also have to consider hay wastage when feeding big round bales. Hay wastage is difficult to estimate, but generally has been found to be from 6% to 20% (or more). For this example, lets assume 15% hay wastage. This means that approximately 30 pounds of grass hay must be hauled to the pasture for each cow each day that hay is expected to be the primary ingredient in the diet. After calving and during early lactation, the cow may weigh 100 pounds less, but will be able to consume about 2.6% of her body weight (100% dry matter) in hay. This would translate into 36 pounds of “as-fed” hay per cow per day necessary to be hauled to the pasture. This again assumes 15% hay wastage. Accurate knowledge of average cow size in your herd as well as the average weight of your big round bales becomes necessary to predict hay needs and hay feeding strategies. Big round hay bales will vary in weight. Diameter and length of the bale, density of the bale, type of hay, and moisture content all will greatly influence weight of the bale. Weighing a pickup or trailer with and without a bale may be the best method to estimate bale weights. Source: www.drovers.com Written by: Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University n

email. Please have your email address ready when you call her. We provide Cattle hedging tutorials here at the Board of Trade and you can come in person on a Friday or Saturday morning or afternoon and educate yourself on the risk and rational of Cattle hedging in a global economy that packers probably understand better than most cattlemen. Look for the US Dollar to begin a serious sell off during the winter as the economy turns down and takes the stock market with it. Unfortunately it appears the Trump honeymoon with the by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade stock market may be over. And remember, hedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT Remember a few weeks ago before Christmas when the or CME instruments still has risk of loss and is not suitable for Feeder Cattle futures on the Chicago Board rallied a few days all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their in a row, just a wee bit, but doing while Fat Cattle were a little livestock on the dirt. n negative and while the stock market was getting hammered on many, many days. The Feeders were indeed saying’ don’t sell me short’. If it is true that the Feeders are the leaders, an old axiom in the Cattle business for decades, then the winter rally is unquestionably underway. And while old school weather forecasting organizations imply the big snow and fierce winter will be in the Canadian part of the world we must not assume that a lesser amount of snow will impede the winter rally for Cattle markets. Could it be that raw demand for beef and a trend reversal in the US Dollar due to contracting manufacturing data and pathetic mortgage application readings and poor existing home sales can ignite Cattle markets? You bet. [See Fat and Feeder Cattle charts on this page] The problem for the year ahead? The stock market. While President Trump has done a splendid job of jump starting the economic engine of the U.S. to get more horse-power we regret to say that the debt is soaring into oblivion too. You know the old saying ‘Son, you can’t spend more than you bring in’ and that cliché’ is going to hit us all square in the nose sometime in the next 2 years and create a different kind of winter, that being an economic winter of the type an old Russian economist named Kondratieff taught would happen in civilized countries. Take Home Depot and Ruth Chris, for example, and consider that these two major stocks and highly successful public companies are down 21% and 28% off the highs’ of the year, and you see trouble is brewing. [See stock market chart on this page] If everything is so good and humming along then why would the ‘high income steak house’ and then the pre-eminent home improvement store of all time have stocks that are getting their tail kicked but good? They are warning of us of tough times ahead. Does this mean the Cattle markets will not have a barn-burner rally for the winter on shrinking supplies while the Dollar drops? Of course not. However, after the winter rally in Cattle markets we would have to say hedging your Cattle will be a critical thing to do well from April 2019 through autumn 2019. There are a number of ways to do that. Talk with us before mid-January since hedging your Cattle in a global economy now demands that you integrate the US Dollar, the Chinese Yuan, Economic manufacturing data from the United State and China and Europe, sale barn activity and always changing basis’ due to all of the foregoing. AK-SAR-BEN Stock Show Transitions to Junior Livestock Show Format Grand Island, NE –The Aksarben Stock Show will transition to junior livestock show format in 2019. Under the junior show model, youth from nine to 19 years of age are eligible for the competition with no prerequisite of youth organization affiliation. Greg Harder, stock show director, said the change will give the 92-year-old Aksarben Stock Show growth opportunities. “Today’s agricultural youth are involved in 4-H, FFA, breed associations or open class competitions, making them diverse in their affiliations,” he stated. “We want to make sure more junior exhibitors can show at Aksarben in 2019.” Harder said part of the expansion strategy meant opening doors to additional states. “We added four more,” he said. “Arkansas, Montana, Indiana and Wisconsin will join the existing 10 state family of eligibility.” Rules for the 2019 event will be written by Aksarben Stock Show management, versus the previous system of rules within each state operating independently. “It’s very difficult to run a fair and unified show when everyone plays by different rules,” Harder said. “We’ve brought those rules in-house to a sole playbook that everyone abides by.” Bernadette (Bernie) O’Rourke, extension youth livestock specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the animal science departments said, “Wisconsin appreciates the opportunity for our youth to take part in the long tradition of Aksarben. We anticipate our youth will benefit from connecting with others and continuing to expand on their knowledge of animals through knowledge and professional contests. “ Officials from Nebraska State Fair, show producer, noted that the show expansion will be a benefit to Grand Island businesses, bringing more people to town. Livestock facilities built in 2010 for Nebraska State Fair will continue to house the show. The Aksarben Stock Show will be held Sept 26-29, 2019 in Grand Island, NE. Cold Weather Cow Care Winter brings a special set of challenges for cattle producers. The need for labor and management increase just as forage quality, feed availability, and hours of daylight available to get things done decrease. Just in case this doesn’t offer enough of a challenge, this is also calving season when we are bringing into the operation the product we will have to turn into profits in order to be here next winter. The first consideration each day in winter time livestock care should be water. Water is the first limiting nutrient and although daily intake goes down in cold weather, adequate consumption every day is still vital. Cows can’t utilize frozen water. They may be able to meet part of their water requirement on a temporary basis by eating snow, but they also expend calories melting the snow and warming it to body temperature. If you water your cows in ponds be sure to cut ice at least once daily. Feed the cows in the area where you have provided access to the pond water, so they can find it before it freezes again. When cattle are thirsty they walk out on the ice, especially if it has snow on it, and can follow through in a bunch when they encounter thinner ice near the center of the pond. If you water your cattle in tanks, be aware that extended cold weather may result in a tank full of ice with no room for water. One producer painted the south sides of his tanks black to absorb more solar energy. While it didn’t completely solve ice problems, it worked well in marginal conditions and helped slow the ice buildup in extreme cold weather. Another idea that has been used successfully is to secure a large, black inflated inner tube in the tank where the cattle can drink out of the hole in the center. The water in the center of the tube will remain open except in the most

64

Livestock Plus Inc.

extreme conditions. If you use automatic waterers , check them daily to avoid catastrophe. They can only meet the water requirements of the cattle if they keep working normally. If a heater quits or a lid doesn’t close properly they can freeze up fast. With electric waterers or tank heaters be careful for shorts or bare wire. Stray voltage of only a few volts can cause cattle not to drink. While warm, bedded, barns would be above the aspirations of most beef cows, some shelter should be provided, at least from the wind. Solid or semi-solid fences, trees, or brush areas are usually adequate. Three sided sheds are better, but must be cleaned out occasionally to avoid other problems. Cattle are warm blooded creatures and must maintain a constant core temperature. Everyone knows that nutritional requirements increase in cold weather, but few stockmen know how much the energy requirement changes. Critical temperature is defined as the lower end of the cow’s comfort zone and is the temperature at which you need to increase feed provided. Hair and fat both serve as insulators. The critical temperature for cows with good winter coats and good body condition is 20’ F. As the temperature drops below this you need to feed these cows about 1% more for each degree drop below the critical temperature. For thin or short haired cows the critical temperature is about 30’F and you will need to feed an extra 2% for each degree below this. When cows are wet the critical temperature is about 50’ F. Some health concerns, such as bovine respiratory disease, may not be as prevalent in cold weather as they are when there is a large difference between high and low daily temperatures. Other health problems, however, can take up the slack. Cold weather usually increases feet problems. Frozen rough ground causes abrasions on the feet. When the ground thaws, especially if it remains wet and muddy, conditions are ideal for the entry of infection at these abraded sites. Maintaining a graveled area around water sources and feeders can help a lot. Cattle tend to congregate more around feed grounds, which can become a high risk factor for calf pneumonia and calf diarrhea. Moving the feeding area around the pasture is a good idea, especially after the calves start to arrive. Internal and external parasites can also be a concern. While winter is not a high risk time for the spread of roundworms, those adult worms living in your cow’s digestive system can be cheating you out of a lot of nutrition that your cows need. If you didn’t worm your cows in the fall, worming in cold weather might stop this loss and help your cows get off to a better start on green grass in the spring. Lice can be a serious winter problem as well. Watch closely for dark discoloration around the head and face or excess scratching and rubbing. Control lice by spraying if you can find a warm sunny day. Powders work well if applied evenly when temperatures remain cold and wetting is not advisable. For me (and for many of you) the biggest cold weather challenge is dealing with the desire to get it done and go to the fire. The days when it is hardest to work outside are the days when your cattle need you the most. A little extra time making sure your herd is comfortable, healthy and well fed now can make a lot of difference when you are looking at that sale barn check next fall. Nichols Family: Thank You for your generous donations toward the Iowa State UK Heritage Livestock Study abroad program. Your gifts were given to your friend, John Elliot, and to his son and herdsman at Rawburn Angus in England. This trip was a “once in a lifetime opportunity” and would not been possible without people like you. It exposed us to agriculture on an international level and gave us a better understanding of purebred livestock and rare breeds. We developed a greater appreciation at what we have here at home in the USA. Once again thank you for you support of our programs at Iowa State

Current FARMLAND Market

Iowa Land Guy

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com Farmland prices for the month of November were stable We are seeing multiple successful auctions, and a good solid trade of real estate. There is an optimistic outlook for the future by most buyers. Topics of concern for most farmers are low overall commodity prices, interest rates, forging trade wars and lenders tightening down next years budgets. Today the White House released the statement: “China has agreed to start purchasing agricultural product from our farmers immediately.” This along with better than expected yields across the state have kept the positive attitude and resiliency of farmers up. We have started to see a trend where farmers are on opposite ends of the spectrum. They are either very strong or walking a fine line in making it. Overall there is talk of opportunity in the market for the future. U.S. Farmland returns averaged over 13% per year from 2007-16. Age, industry, geography, cash, 1031, and banking/USDA all play a part in the current buyer’s decision-making process. The market is staying very stable with an underlying downward trend with pocket success due to local buying power variability. 82% of farms in Iowa are owned free and clear. There is a lot of equity, and cash in the outliers that will keep the price of land strong. All buyers have one thing in common. They all have an interest in land ownership and they all want to buy more. Results from the 162 auctions this last month have the average for high quality ground at $9,655/acre and medium quality ground averaging $6,551/acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $3,602/acre.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

EPA’s Releases WOTUS Proposal On December 11 the Environmental Protection Agency proposed a new water rule designed to replace the overreaching and illegal 2015 Waters of the U.S. Rule. David Trowbridge, president of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association issued the following statement in response: “EPA’s proposed new WOTUS rule is encouraging, and the agency’s work to repeal and replace the 2015 rule is appreciated by Iowa’s cattlemen. This is an important step forward in replacing the onerous and illegal rule with a definition that protects producers’ property rights and provides clarity while also safeguarding our water. The proposed rule reflects the important strides forward our association has made with EPA to help them understand the impact their rules have on Iowa’s independent, progressive cattlemen.” Environmental regulations are consistently among producers’ top three concerns in surveys conducted by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. “The inability to determine what constitutes a Water of the US handcuffs producers,” says ICA’s Business Issues committee chair, Mark Putney. “Uncertainty over current or future regulations, such as the WOTUS rule, stifles growth of the industry and discourages producers from making changes on their farms that would benefit their farm, the environment and Iowa’s rural economy.” For over 20 years, debate surrounding the scope of federal authority over “waters of the United States”, or WOTUS, has resulted in litigation and regulatory uncertainty. Supreme Court cases addressing these issues added additional confusion to the Clean Water Act’s implementation. The Obama administration took an unlawfully broad view of federal jurisdiction over waters, causing 31 states and many

agricultural, small business, and industry groups to challenge the administration’s 2015 WOTUS rule. The Trump Administration has been working forward on repeal and replacement of the 2015 rule since shortly after

sidered “waters of the United States” and subject to federal jurisdiction: 1. Traditional navigable waters (TNWs) such as large rivers and lakes 2. Tributaries of TNWs, NOT including ephemeral features

EPA’s proposed new WOTUS rule is encouraging, and the agency’s work to repeal and replace the 2015 rule is appreciated by Iowa’s cattlemen. This is an important step forward in replacing the onerous and illegal rule with a definition that protects producers’ property rights and provides clarity while also safeguarding our water. taking office. Through this process, ICA staff and leaders have been working with EPA staff through the Animal Agriculture Discussion Group and NCBA’s Environmental Working Group to encourage EPA to recognize the value of animal agriculture and the voluntary environmental stewardship efforts of cattlemen. ICA’s involvement in these groups has forged important relationships vital in relaying cattlemen’s concerns with environmental regulation, including WOTUS. For example, Hema Subramanian, Acting Special Assistant for Agriculture Policy in EPA’s Office of the Administrator sat down with Iowa cattlemen at last week at the Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit. Subramanian heard directly from producers about challenges faced on Iowa cattle operations with environmental rules and offered ideas for continuing collaboration between industry and the agency. The proposed WOTUS rule defines six categories of waters that would be con-

3. Certain ditches that resemble traditional navigable waters\ 4. Certain lakes and ponds, including oxbow lakes and others that contribute perennial or intermittent flow to a TNW 5. Impoundments 6. Adjacent wetlands, which includes wetlands that physically touch other jurisdictional waters Ephemeral features that contain water only during or in response to rainfall, groundwater, most farm and roadside ditches, prior converted cropland, stormwater control features and waste treatment systems, including lagoons and settling basins would not be subject to federal jurisdiction under the new rule. The proposed rule will be open for a 60-day public comment period. ICA plans to participate by providing feedback on behalf of Iowa’s cattlemen and encourages members to comment, too.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Iowa Cattlemen’s Hall of Fame The 2018 inductee into the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Hall of Fame, Ed Greiman, has a long list of accomplishments, from operating a cow/calf and feedlot operation with his family to leading national conversations on important cattle industry topics. Ed began working for ICA in 1998, serving as the Membership Field Director for Northeast Iowa, Beef Quality Assurance Director, and Membership Services Director. As BQA Director for the state, he provided resources and oversight for Source and Age Verifying cattle and feedlots for value based markets . He also developed an electronic ID and source-verified program with Cargill. After leaving ICA, Ed served as the Vice President of Iowa Quality Beef Co-Op

Packing Plant. While there, he helped integrate Iowa cattle into the McDonald’s source verified program. Ed has served as a Regional VicePresident, president-elect and president of ICA. He chaired the Iowa State Beef Checkoff Exploratory Group, which ultimately led to the reinstatement of the state checkoff in 2016. At NCBA, Ed has served as chairman of the Cattle Marketing and International Trade policy committee, chairman of the working group on Price Discovery and chairman of the CME Cattle Futures Volatility and Contract Design Working Group. He has consistently advocated on behalf of Iowa’s independent feedlot operators in all of these roles. Ed continues to take part in ICA’s

feedlot council, NCBA working groups, and ISU’s Animal Science Department Advisory Board. He is also the general manager of Upper Iowa Beef.

Iowa’s Outstanding Commercial Cattle Producer Honored Curtis Claeys, DeWitt, was recently named the 2018 Outstanding Commercial Producer for the state of Iowa. Curt is part of a multi-generational farm with row-

crops, custom cropping, approximately 250 cows and a 650 head finishing operation. The pasture-to-plate operation raises high-quality black Angus cattle for Iowa Premium Beef and Aurora, and recently launched a locker beef program to sell beef directly to consumers. The Claeys farm has transitioned over the years from swine production to dairy steer calves, then dairy heifer replacements before beginning beef production. The addition of another generation working on the farm full time has been a vital component in the beef enterprise. The farm added a confinement barn in 2014. The operation keeps detailed performance records, and uses those records to make decisions regarding culling and

sire selection. In six years, the farm has achieved a 95 pound increase in yearling weight, while decreasing instances of calving difficulty to zero. Most of the bulls used in the operation come from ICA’s bull test. The farm has hosted an open house with the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, and prioritizes the environment. Cows graze stalks on all highly erodible crop ground, allowing no-till and cover crop plantings. Rotational grazing is used in the pastures, as well. Claeys is a member of his county’s fair board and the Iowa State Fair Board. His son, Kendall, is a graduate of the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program and a board member for the Clinton County Cattlemen’s Association.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a very enjoyable and relaxing Christmas season. Tamar and I took a date night to Hannibal, MO, where we were able to experience one of the most well put together Christmas events I have ever had the good fortune of seeing! The Journey to Bethlehem, put on by The Crossing Church in Hannibal, MO was awesome! The amount of thought, work, and attention to detail that was put in to making that event happen is mind blowing. We were able to participate in a 90-mile walking journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem… well, a 90-mile journey shortened down to 1/3 of a mile and around 30 minutes travel by foot… not days. Still, they had so many stops along the way including very intimidating Romans, thieves, and historically accurate markets that made it seem like you were there, seeing firsthand the birth of our Savior! It was such a great experience to be able to set the tone and our hearts for the Christmas season. We really enjoyed attending and would very much recommend making the trip to Hannibal or seek one out in your area next year! The new year always brings a lot of excitement to our industry. Calving season and the new baby calves that we put so much time and thought into planning will soon be here. The National Western

Stock Show is right around the corner and right after that, bull sale season will be in full go! I encourage everyone to look at 2019 with a positive outlook. Not just regarding our livestock industry, but also with our country in mind. We all see this negativity the media puts in front of us daily, but we all know how and why our country is so GREAT! Let’s keep working together to provide our next generation not only a great livestock industry but a country that will provide them the opportunity that with a little hard work, their future is endless. I pray that the good Lord will provide all of you with a very successful 2019. God Bless You All, Cody

CHEERS to the happiest of New Years! ...wishing all of you many of God’s blessings in the upcoming year! My oldest daughter, Taylor, and I decided to look for all “good” things that happened to us all day, big and small! We happened to be in Des Moines Christmas shopping, and since my patience wears very thin with rude, inconsiderate people we thought this would help us to focus on the “good” all around us! It worked! The girls and I started the day dropping Tuck off and grabbing a bite to eat at Culvers. As we left the restaurant, Taylor made note that a very nice man opened both sets of doors for us to leave. That was the note on our list. When we arrived at our car, we discovered that Taylor had left the passenger side window completely rolled down the entire time we ate lunch! Tay quickly pointed out that her mistake, was actually a blessing because nothing was gone so it was second on our list. She started listing everything on my iPad under the heading BLESSINGS, which I love! Next, she thought it was a definite WIN when she found several York Peppermint Patties in my purse, yep she found my hidden stash. Not sure about her number 3 on the list, as it really tapped into my chocolate, but oh well! Target was our next stop and Treva needed some little black shoes. We will just say, I all but wrestled her in the aisle attempting to get her foot into the shoes. As we were leaving the shoe department a man came after us waving my phone that had fallen out of my pocket during the wrestling match. After thanking him repeatedly, Tay said, “wow mom, how would we survive without your phone! That was a blessing!” On a side note, we had a little talk about how we definitely could survive without the phone! As we began checking out, a lady got in line behind us and began unloading bag after bag of Hershey’s kisses with peppermint. Taylor’s eyes got huge and we had to ask why so many bags. The woman said I just love giving them away during the holidays because they were her favorite treat! When she learned we had never tried them, the woman started piling the Hershey’s kisses in Taylor’s pockets and hands. Again, after thanking her over and over, Taylor thought that was the best blessing yet! Well, one last “blessing” happened when we were at Kohl’s. A young lady, Rachel, stopped to talk to Treva and then turned and gave me a HUGE hug! Rachel’s mom talked with me about raising a daughter with Down Syndrome. >>> This one was my favorite! On the drive back home, Tay and I talked about how we didn’t even notice the negative things because we were so focused on the BLESSINGS. Taylor and I hope each of you takes a day, or maybe more to make note of those little positive things in your life, whether it be on your phone or on paper. Just be sure it’s a place where you might run across them again! Enjoy your NEW YEAR and take joy in the little things! Please keep our military and our country and state leaders in your prayers!
