ENTRANCES AND EXITS By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society

DOORWAYS tell us a great deal about the buildings and structures they serve, from huge office blocks to tiny cottages. People often comment on the relatively small size of some doors in ancient buildings. It is frequently claimed that this was because folk were smaller in far off days. This was generally true although there have always been very tall or large people. It is said that John Middleton, the Giant of Hale, famously stood at 9 ft 3 inches. Kings such as Edward IV and Henry VIII were over 6 ft tall. There were other possible reasons doorways were small. For example, in the days before central heating it was important to reduce draughts and conserve heat. There were also security issues – the smaller the door, the less likely people could easily barge in. The type of doorway is determined by the architectural style of the building it serves. In ancient and classical times, entrances developed special significance. Doorways were of very great importance to the Egyptians.

Colossal statues and obelisks were placed on either side and the approaches often lined with rows of gigantic sphinxes. The Greeks surrounded their doorways with mouldings and cornices. Doors were originally made of wood, iron, bronze or even stone but now many other materials are used from plate glass to plastic. In medieval times castles and cathedrals needed massive gateways to protect the interiors. In addition, fortresses often had portcullises as a secondary defence. These were large iron or wooden gratings suspended in grooves which were lowered to bar the entrance. Exterior doors were sometimes studded as an extra defence against intruders. There are several local examples including one at St Michael’s Parish Church in Huyton (pictured). There has been a church on this site since the 12th century although most of the existing structure was built between 1647 and 1663. The tower was added in the 1700s. Other studded doors can be seen at West Derby Courthouse and Croxteth Hall.

Sometimes whole buildings are dismantled and moved elsewhere but more often parts are recycled – a process called architectural salvage. A door of West Derby’s ancient chapel was saved when the

building was demolished in the 1850s. It now serves as the vestry door in nearby St Mary’s Church. n Join the West Derby Society at West Derby Courthouse open 2 pm - 4 pm most Sundays April to October, admission free.

HOPE16 takes love of Jesus into community in a practical way HOPE16 was an initiative headed up by WDEC and supported by West Derby Churches Together, which took place recently. Our aim was to take the love of Jesus into the local community in a practical way – showing the people and businesses in West Derby that we cared about them. After a Pudding and Prayer night on Friday, when we were joined by some members of Victory Church, we hit the ground

running on Saturday with a prayer breakfast setting us up for the day ahead. A team of young and not so young manned the free car wash and we were really grateful to the folks from St Mary’s church for using their facilities and providing a fine array of refreshments and cakes to enjoy. Another team made some delicious sandwiches and cakes and visited all the local businesses providing them and their

staff with a free lunch which was well received. In the afternoon, a team cleared and tidied a local garden while some others started at the top of Mill Lane and made their way to the park entrance doing a litter pick and weed. They managed to fill at least 10 bin bags just from that short distance and were frequently stopped along the way from passers by wondering what this team were up to! We finished off the

Saturday afternoon by clearing the steps and surrounding area of the monument near St Mary’s church. A team of not so young people painted and decorated a pensioner’s flat in West Derby. West Derby Evangelical Church are grateful to Mr Binnington of HMG paints for providing the materials and Thompsons Mission for replacement furniture plus the generosity of West Derby Carpets & Blinds for their discount.

Twin trouble By Anton Valdemart

HE learnt to put up with their fussing, realising he must tolerate them in order to lead a quiet life. Bert had chosen solitude – he was a conservationist when most people didn’t know the meaning of the word. He lived in a ramshackle beach hut on Hale Head. The former accountant filled his days beachcombing and tending to the local wildlife, lovingly nursing injured creatures of all kinds. Nina and Katy lived at nearby Marl Pit Farm run by their parents and two older brothers. The girls were identical with the dark Spanish looks of their mother. Their beauty and eerily similar personalities set them apart from others – as did their independence. Bert was a happy hermit and was not at all pleased when the twins first broke the peace of his isolation. The two young women arrived on their bikes. “We’ve come to ask why you’re here,” said Nina. “We don’t think you should live on our beach,” added Katy.

Bert chased them away. Their father came some days later and he and Bert, both keen on the natural world, soon got on. Sometimes Bert would go to the farm when there were odd jobs to be done. On other occasions the girls would bring him injured animals to tend. What really irked him was their insistence that he have some form of order in his life. He had taken to living in a hut to escape that sort of thing. Bert tolerated these irritations for peace and quiet. The twins nagged and mothered him and he in return sulked in his hut. The arrival of the turtle changed things. Bert was out on his usual early morning stroll when he spotted a huge shape in the shallows. He waded in to take a closer look – it was a massive leatherback turtle, about eight foot long from nose to tail. Bert had read about them and knew they sometimes appeared off North Wales but in the Mersey? Never. He noticed the distressed creature had an injured flipper. With the help of the twins and their brothers, the turtle was manoeuvred into a tidal creek. Bert and the twins fed and nursed it for six

weeks while the injury healed. One high tide they released it back into the estuary. Life returned to familiar routine. About a week later Nina and Katy were fishing from rocks near the lighthouse. The sky was overcast but soon great black clouds came rolling in, accompanied by a howling wind. A vast wave swept up and dragged the twins into mountainous seas. Nina managed to struggle back to land but Katy disappeared. Everybody was deeply upset. The following morning was deadly calm as search parties scoured the coastline. It was Bert who found her sprawled on the beach. Katy could hardly speak but motioned over her shoulder. Bert caught sight of a huge leathery shell disappearing under the water.

routine after a hectic summer HI GUYS and welcome to my September edition of Life ‘n’ Style. September is a month where you finally start to get your routine back on track after the hectic summer! Charity launches 30th anniversary appeal LIVERPOOL cancer charity Sunflowers has launched its 30th anniversary appeal – aiming to raise £30,000 to help fund its vital services. It is calling upon Liverpool residents to make donations large and small to help support. volunteers have helped literally thousands of local people cope with a diagnosis of cancer. ONE evening last month we at Garston Animal Rescue got a call to say that there was a stray cat on Speke Hall Road who been there for some weeks. Volunteer Rachel Foster picked him up and got him to safety. We settled him in, fed him and gave him a comfy bed for the night. We called him Danny Boy and thought no more about it, just glad that he was safe. We then checked him to see if he had a micro-chip so then we’d be able to re-

unite him with his owner. To our astonishment we found that his owner lived in Belfast! Owner Julie Blair was just as shocked as we were to find that, somehow, he’d got himself to Liverpool. She’d thought she’d lost him for good as he’d been missing for around 18 months, and a few days later an ecstatic Julie made the eight-hour boat trip from Belfast to collect him from our shelter. But how and when he got here is something that only Danny Boy knows!

Cat of the month – Maurice and Marguerita COULD you find room in your heart and your home for these badly-neglected cats? In our history we have seen many cats in very poor condition, but even we were pretty shocked at the state of these two cats when they came in to us. They were discovered in the shed of a derelict house which was to be demolished. Both were full of flea bites and scabs. But Marguerita (the beautiful long-haired tortoiseshell) was so painfully thin we were worried that she probably

didn’t have long to live when we first saw her. We immediately got fluids into her and had to feed her very small meals at first. I think she had over time become too weak to find scraps of food, and so began a vicious circle. She was too weak to get food, and because of this she became even weaker, and so increasingly more at risk. Thankfully she has gradually put weight on and now eats for England. At first we thought she was very elderly but we now find that she is more

like just two or three years old. The male cat, who we’ve called Maurice, is a very handsome tabby. He’s in competition for the friendliest cat in the world! He is desperate to be cuddled and he chatters at you constantly. We obviously don’t want to split them up. Would you consider offering a home to these stunning cats and turn their lives around? He loves to explore too so is hoping to find a lovely family with a rural home with a large escape-proof garden so he can investigate everything thoroughly in the security of his own home. He generally gets along with dogs in general and could share his new forever family with another dog of a similar personality so then can enjoy playing together. He can also live with kids over the age of 16. As he’s only a young boy he is enjoying doing training at the centre and his new owners would need to carry on with this. Why not get Olympian fit for summer

WITH the Rio Olympics now underway, I thought I would write this month’s article with an Olympic theme. Five tips to get Olympian fit this summer 1. Get focused in the gym: maybe use your phone or mp3 player to provide motivating music. If this isn’t motivational for you then leave the phone behind as it can be a distraction. 2. Vary your workouts: add in different classes to mix up your current exercise routine. Maybe attend my Boxercise classes. 3. Stick to lean proteins: if you are a female and training regularly, try and consume 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Chicken and fish tend to be the main proteins I use throughout the week. 4. Have healthy snacks throughout the day: nuts, wholegrain Ryvita, Greek style yoghurt, cooked meats, rice cakes can all be healthy snacks throughout the day and can help keep your metabolism ticking over. 5. Focus on the now: Olympian athletes will have an end goal in site and, sometimes, the thought of sticking to rigid exercise and eating routines can be monotonous. Focus on the now and enjoy the process of getting fitter and stronger. New blood donation venue for West Derby donors

WITH thousands of patients receiving blood transfusions every year, NHS Blood and Transplant is challenging the people of West Derby, Stoneycroft and surrounding areas to make a date to donate and sign up to save lives at their new venue in Alder Sports Club. Donated blood is vital for a wide variety of life-saving procedures across the country including in local hospitals such as Alder Hey, Broadgreen, Whiston and the Royal Liverpool Hospital. Patients undergoing major surgery and emergency treatment often require blood transfusions, but perhaps less well-known is the fact that blood is essential to the treatment for many different types of cancer and blood disorders. Amanda Eccles, NHS Blood and Transplant’s Senior Marketing Coordinator, said: “Every time

someone donates a unit of blood, their donation saves or improves the lives of up to three people. Blood donations are precious. “Regular blood donors in West Derby would have helped to save thousands of lives and we cannot thank them enough. LIVERPOOL have played eight league games at home so far this season with a record of won one, drawn two and lost five. When compared to an away record of won five, drawn two and lost one, this highlights exactly where Liverpool have been lacking this season and it will most certainly cost them the chance of promotion. The month started in predictable fashion with it being a home game as they were skittled all out for a disappointing 122 against lowly Caldy. Despite reducing the visitors to 61-3, Caldy eventually won by

seven wickets. Next up was an away game at Woolton side Old Xavs who play at SFX School. With both sides in the top four it was a must-win game and Liverpool, despite losing the toss and having to bowl first, made light work of the Old Xavs batsmen, dismissing them for 94, with Nathan Wyman 3-13 and Ashwin Nash 4-8 the pick of the bowlers. Surely even Liverpool couldn’t throw this one away and despite one or two hiccups they saw the game through with the loss of five wickets with Tushar Mahambrey top scoring with 30. The following game was also away, this time at Spring View. Spring View declared

on 214-2, leaving Liverpool 53 overs to either bat out for the draw or go for the win. At one stage all thre results were possible but in the end Liverpool ran out of overs and finished on 191-7, with Mahambrey again top scoring with 75 not out. Unfortunately, the next game was at home and, not for the first time, Liverpool were humiliated, this time against Wavertree. On what seemed like a good batting wicket, Wavertree were bowled out for 175, which was about par, with Jared Clein taking 3-24. But yet again the Liverpool batsmen failed to apply themselves and for the third time this season were bowled all out for under 70 runs, this time for 52.

South get off to a strong start By Jim Stanway

AFTER a very tough preseason against a host of semi-professional clubs, South Liverpool FC got off to a better start than they did last season. The more intensive preseason programme included a visit from Welsh Premier League runners-up Bala Town, fresh from their entry in the Europa League. South acquitted themselves very well against their Welsh opponents, equalising from a Danny Ventre penalty and only conceding the third in a 3-1 defeat in the last minute. The season kicked off in earnest with the semi-final of the Bill Weight Trophy, with South hosting local rivals and second division champions Richmond Raith Rovers. South were 2-0 down at half-time but the introduction of several substitutes, including gamechanger Tom Jarir, proved decisive. Jarir scored the first goal, created the equaliser and generally caused havoc down

the left as South rounded off a 3-2 win. South will now face Ashville on the final on a midweek date during September. The league season started with a home win against Mossley Hill, a repeat of last season’s first division cup final. The game was an equally tight affair with a turning point being an injury to the Mossley Hill goalkeeper at the end of the first half. South took advantage and scored two late goals through Danny Ventre and Gary Pollard, with both goals having a semblance of good fortune in a 2-0 win. The reserves are now managed by ex-Gateacre

South’s massed defence look to keep out Bala Town in South’s prestigious friendly with the League of Wales runners up who had recently played in the Europa League. Village manager John McGrattan, assisted by Colin White, and started off with a great 4-1 win at Willaston with goals from Jordan McGowan, Craig Byrne, new signing Reggie Royes and an own goal. South’s star striker Cameron Dalton signed a 12-month contract with Northern Premier League (Southern Division) Witton Albion during the close season, after trials with Conference side Southport. Sadly, however, Cameron broke his leg in three places on his league debut at Stamford and all connected with South wish him well in his rehabilitation.

SUMMER is ending and Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club are getting ready in earnest for September We have a new Club chair, men’s first teamer and women’s coach, Chris Thomas, and a new men’s coach James Cunliffe. GB’s Pete Nicholson is starting his second season as women’s first team coach. Things have never looked better. We have had a full and successful summer with record numbers playing socially throughout July and August. Both first teams have been training twice a week since mid-July and all the other teams started this week, the earliest ever! Over the summer Jenny Ratcliffe and Mike Lennon

have qualified as England Hockey Level 2 coaches. We are preparing to coach more and more 9-16 year olds at Archbishop Blanch, King David’s and Liverpool College supported by Merseyside and Liverpool City Sportivate and Satellite Club funding and by Everton in the Community’s Premier League 4 Sport hockey initiative. We have attracted many players who have come to Liverpool to work and study, others back from university, returning from child raising, injury, and experimenting with other clubs. New players, including a Welsh International, have come from clubs including Brooklands, Colwyn Bay, Neston, Sheffield Hallam and Northern Ireland and we have a large influx from the

University of Liverpool. Our latest Back to Hockey course has attracted a doctor, a fashion buyer, a teacher, a coach’s mother to name but a few. It continues until the start of the season in September. Unlike previous years where we have attracted lots of recent mums, this year we have had an apology from a returner who is prioritising her honeymoon over next Tuesday’s training! Where’s her commitment?! So it’s now time for our inaugural Summer Saturday Sizzling Mixed Sevens, and a host of friendlies against Neston, Alderley Edge, Northern, Formby, Cannock, Stourport, a three-match tour to Belfast and the annual Norman Todd tournament at Southport. Roll on September!

River Juniors on the double

RIVER Juniors under 10s FC continued their fine form recently by winning their final league game in the Colin Deakin Memorial Summer League, making it seven wins from seven in the under11s Premier Division. Most notable was a fine win against Finn Harps u11s which left the team league champions with a 100 per cent record and, with a final scheduled for the end of August when the boys go for a cup win also against Finn Harps. The recent successes accompany the

previous title where the boys won the Edge Hill Junior u10s Summer League with a 100 per cent record. There were some fine comments too from the rival grass roots managers in relation to the team, especially from Katwijk Boys manager and the Netherley Wood Lane Juniors manager, who was especially gracious commenting: “Congratulations on winning the Edge Hill u10s League. Well deserved”. This was extremely satisfying for manager Kev Edgar, who said: “The Summer

League was played with great sportsmanship and honesty from all managers, officials and children involved and a special thanks must be passed on to the Edge Hill JFL committee for running the league superbly and in line with the Liverpool County FA, who do such a tremendous job for junior grass roots football in the city.” More recently, and despite missing several regular players who were on their summer holidays, the boys went to Nottingham for the New Balance International Cup.

The boys maintained their 100 per cent grass roots identity and reached the final, narrowly losing out to West Brom Allstars despite dominating their opponents. Wins in the group against teams from Nigeria and Uganda and a draw against West Brom meant the boys faced last year’s winners Collingham from Nottingham for a winner takes all game to reach the semi-finals.
