CORNCRAKE VALLEY By Stephen Guy

A CENTURY Ago Childwall with its ancient church and village was still a rural area just five miles from Liverpool city centre. All Saints is Liverpool’s only surviving substantial medieval church with some 14th century masonry and windows. The building has been altered over the centuries: the tower was rebuilt in 1810 and an aisle was added in 1906. There are two monumental brasses, rare in this area, set in a wall. Dating from 1524, they depict Henry Norris of Speke and his wife. The south wall has what is believed to be a “lepers’ squint” outside at ground level. Now mostly confined to hot countries, leprosy was once found in Britain. Lepers were not allowed to join congregations in church for fear of spreading infection. However, they had a view of the altar through the squint and could follow the service.

extensively altered over the centuries. Records show that the kitchen was refurbished in 1699 when new ovens were installed. The vicarage, with its neat gardens and fine views, was demolished in 1928 and a parish hall built on the site. At this time Childwall Valley was still rolling farmland where corncrakes hid in the crops. This secretive bird is now very rare. It is known for its harsh “crek, crek” call which was last heard in Childwall about 1931. My father and grandfather knew the valley well and often crossed it by footpath. Childwall was absorbed into Liverpool in 1913. Extensive housing development was carried out throughout the 1930s

transforming the area into a leafy Liverpool suburb. There are still fine views from Score Lane, once a narrow gated track. Childwall Woods and Black Wood are wildlife havens. I often use the Sustrans cycle track following the course of the former Cheshire Lines railway opened in 1879. It eventually linked Southport to Warrington and beyond. Childwall Station stood at the bottom of Well Lane, opening on the same day as the line. The station closed to passengers in 1931, ironically just as the area was starting to be developed. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free.

Congratulations Kerry Peacock, BEM from South Liverpool LINK WOOLTON in Bloom is delighted to announce that Mrs Kerry Peacock, our horticultural manager, has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours List. Kerry has been the driving force and inspiration for the hugely successful Liverpool suburb of Woolton gaining 10 years of Gold awards in NW in Bloom and the RHS National Britain in Bloom competitions, culminating in gaining the highest accolade of Gold in the Champion of Champions category in 2014. Woolton in Bloom was formed in 2002 in an effort to bring the village community together following tensions about a proposed one-way traffic system. Woolton was the first ‘urban’ village to win year after year as the competition expanded to include community involvement in addition to floral displays. Woolton in Bloom volunteers range in age from pre-school children to 80+, all giving their time freely and voluntarily under the direction of Kerry Peacock. Woolton in Bloom has worked with Duke of Edinburgh students, youth

The nomination was put forward by local resident, Mr Graham Mansell, who had seen first-hand the work put in by Kerry and her team year on year in Woolton Village. Graham said: “Since I moved into Woolton Village, 20 years ago, Kerry Peacock has impressed me time and again with her horticultural creations, bringing colour into our lovely Woolton Village. “Throughout the whole year, Kerry and the Wooltonin-Bloom team sacrificially donate many hours of their

time, every week, in all weathers, to bring colour into our village. “She inspires and motivates others to contribute, and just goes to show what a team can do when they unite together, winning many of the National horticultural awards.” Woolton in Bloom chair, former councillor, Barbara Mace, also submitted a nomination to support this. She added: “We could not be more delighted that Kerry’s work and inspiration has been recognised in this way. “She always modestly says it is a team effort, but all teams need a leader and motivator, and Woolton in Bloom would not have achieved such success without her inspiration.” Kerry’s hard work was also recognised with a well-deserved Community Champion Award both in North West in Bloom and Britain in Bloom in 2013. Kerry’s award will be presented at a ceremony presided by HM The Queen’s representative, Lord Lieutenant, Dame Lorna Muirhead DBE.

Note from Moira (LINK owner): “I would just like to add my own congratulations to Kerry on her very well deserved award and thank her and all the Woolton in Bloom volunteers who keep Woolton village looking beautiful.”

Meeting of the Gateacre Society THE next meeting of the Gateacre Society will be a talk by Stephen Guy, chairman of the West Derby Society entitled Forgotten Liverpool: Merchant Palaces and Personalities. This will be at the Gateacre Chapel on Gateacre Brow at 2.30pm on Sunday February 5. Everybody welcome to attend, donations welcomed.

Women’s service club celebrates 90 years! SOROPTIMIST International Liverpool, a women’s service organisation, celebrated the club’s recent 90th birthday in vintage style, with afternoon tea at the Sefton Park Hotel, where the club holds its regular monthly meetings. Members and guests entered into the spirit of the club’s founder members by dressing in the style of the 1920’s. The club had been inaugurated at Francis’ Café in Parker Street, Liverpool on the 30th November 1926 with 28 members. By the time the club was chartered on 15th February 1927 by Mr Stuart Morrow, the founder

of Rotary and Soroptimist clubs in America, there were 80 members and Miss Maud Carpenter, business manager of the Liverpool Playhouse, was elected the first President. SI Liverpool was only the third club to be formed in Great Britain, there now being around 3,000 Soroptimist Clubs in 124 countries. Following afternoon tea, member Ann Clayton, a historian, gave a fascinating talk on the founding of the club, using archive records, followed by entertainment of the era from the wonderful local singer, Sarah Chidlow,

which rounded off the afternoon’s fun. Special thanks must also be given to local businessman Mr Stephen Darnell who generously brought along his vintage Wolsey and Felicity Hat Hire who provided several vintage hats for the ladies for helping to recreate a very special celebration! The club is looking forward to its commitment for the next 90 years of service at local and global level. To find out more visit www.sigbi.org/liverpool or call Anne 07814 564649. Mother dear

HIS earliest memories were always from days spent in the kitchen dominated by a huge cooking range and rows of copper pans gleaming in the gaslight. Mrs Bloom was a poor widow trying to raise her son Mark while working long hours as cook at Dreary Hall. Mark suffered ill health which affected his mobility but he was a cheerful child. Often, particularly in bad weather, he could not manage to struggle half a

mile down the narrow lane to the village school. The understanding schoolmaster set him homework to fill his days. Mark, a studious boy, would sit next to the range while his mother busied herself about the kitchen. Stern-faced Mrs Bloom would occasionally issue an order such as “Give that pudding a stir” and Mark would reply “Certainly at once Mother Dear”. Tommy, their black cat,

Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart

crept in when it grew dark – his favourite spot was next to the warm range. He would jump away when the oven door was opened, sending a fiery blast around the kitchen. “It’s as hot as the hobs of Hell,” Mrs Bloom would exclaim, a look of devilment in her eyes. One day Mark was tidying up the scullery next to the kitchen. He discovered some old books beneath battered saucepans. Several outdated

almanacs were piled on an ancient, leather-bound tome. A budding bibliophile, he snatched it up and limped back to his stool by the fire. He was about to open it when a familiar voice snapped: “Stir the gravy” – “Certainly at once Mother Dear”. Mark opened the book on the first page. Strange oldfashioned handwriting was scrawled over the endpaper. “At last after 10 long years I have made me a book from all that has been divulged from diverse places,” said the inscription. “Seek ye within these pages for the light but beware.” Mark leafed his way

through the book’s musty pages. Some were stained and smudged by unknown liquids and substances. He would see it was a recipe book for concoctions to treat all manner of ailments and conditions. Several caught his eye. One was headed For the Cure of Eruptions of the Skin while another proclaimed A Relief from the Palsy. Mark was not tempted – leave well enough alone, he mused. Then he saw another simply headed For the Cure of Irritating Persons. The recipe was relatively simple – the only challenging ingredient was a fox’s

eyeball. However, he was able to secure one from the local hunt. He boiled it with herbs, spices and a dash of seaweed before letting it cool in a corner of the wine cellar. Mrs Bloom thundered: “Stir that soup!” Mark decided it was time for action and slipped the eyeball brew into his mother’s broth that evening. Next day her face was wreathed with smiles as she suggested in a soothing voice: “Do you think you could stir that pudding please?” “Certainly – with the greatest pleasure – Mother Dear”.

Nurses offer advice on staying well in winter AS colder weather conditions hit Merseyside this week, Community Nurses from Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust are urging residents to take extra precautions to keep themselves and loved ones safe and well. It’s important to look after yourself, especially during the colder winter months. Cold weather can be seriously bad for your health, especially if you’re over the age of 65 or living with a long-term health condition. Moira Angel, interim director of nursing for Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust, said: “As colder weather conditions approach, we want to encourage everyone in our local community to be extra mindful of looking out for older family members,

friends and neighbours who might be living alone. “Cold, icy weather can be especially dangerous for frail or elderly people, who are at greater risk of serious trips, slips and falls, and can quickly become socially isolated in icy or snowy weather – so do try to check up on them more often, with extra visits and phone calls.” Keep warm – Try to keep your home heated to at least 18C. Draw your curtains at dusk and keep doors closed to reduce draughts and retain heat. Wearing several light layers of warm clothes is more effective than one thick layer. Eat Well – Have regular hot drinks, and eat at least one hot meal a day if possible. Look out for others – If you have any older neighbours and relatives, look out for

them and call or visit them regularly to make sure they are safe and well. Get prepared – Plan ahead by keeping a well stocked medicine cabinet at home to help you fight off common winter coughs, colds and sore throats Use your pharmacist – If you start to feel unwell, don’t wait until it gets more serious. Seek advice from your local pharmacist. Get a flu jab – You can have a free flu jab to protect against seasonal flu from your GP if you are over 65, pregnant, or have a longterm health condition. Be careful – If you have to go outside in icy conditions, wrap up warm and wear shoes with a good grip on the soles as icy pavements and roads can be extremely slippery.

Hollywood with the A listers? I’d rather be on stage in Liverpool HE’S most often seen on screen alongside fellow League of their Own regulars Jamie Redknapp and Freddie Flintoff, but comedian Jack Whitehall isn’t short of glamorous A-list company either. On the big screen he appeared alongside Hollywood superstars Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston in the film Mother’s Day, and he’s about to star with Eva Longoria in a BBC adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s novel Decline and Fall. “Yes, I’m just picking the A-listers off one by one,” laughs Jack, who brings his live stand-up tour to Liverpool in February. “But it is exciting to work with those kind of people, you always feel a little bit nervous when you’re in their presence and you have to remember to do your job as well, rather

than just stare at them. “You do always feel like you’re slightly robbing a living at every point, that you don’t deserve to be there, so you’re constantly fighting that.” The mini series also features Liverpool actor Stephen Graham, and the three clearly had fun together. Desperate Housewives star Eva said after filming it had been “a pleasure working with the amazing Jack Whitehall” and the 28-yearold reveals he and Stephen found time to prank each other on set. “They were both great,” says Jack. “I loved working with Stephen, he’s such a dude. I’d met him about three or four years ago, we did Soccer AM and I got on with him really well and really wanted to work with him.

“He got me badly, though, because he stole a headshot of mine and wrote a message on it to her saying ‘dear Eva, it’s so wonderful to have you on this show, love your darling Jackie’! “He put it in her dressing room and he told me but I didn’t get to it in time so she found it and never referenced it so she must have thought it was real. It was mortifying that she thought I’d signed a headshot for her and given it to her. On day one. That’s just so creepy.” For the London-born comedian, film and TV work is an add-on to his day job, performing live. He particularly enjoys the TV shows, explaining: “At the moment all the big film stars are wanting to work in TV and I feel like that’s probably the most

exciting place to be working, but at the same time if a great film script came along I’d love to do it.” His heart, though, still really lies on stage where he started his career. “The live stuff is always the most exciting to do because it’s so immediate, you’re there and it’s different each night and nothing really compares to the buzz of that,” he says. “When you’ve been away for a while you’re really itching to get back on stage and I love doing the tour and getting out on the road.” Don’t arenas seem a bit impersonal for a solo show though? “I think it depends what type of stand-up you are,” he explains. “If you’re a man and a mic stand-up maybe, but I’ve always admired people like Lee Evans and Kevin Hart and they really fill the space and try to make it feel like a bit of a spectacle so I actually quite like playing the arenas. “It is quite exhausting but you get a lot of adrenaline when you step onto the stage so it’s a real rush. And Liverpool audiences are really good. Bish (John Bishop) always says it’s the best place to get heckled, it’s when they bring their own jokes that you’re in trouble.” Jack Whitehall at Large comes to Liverpool Echo Arena on Sunday February 5.

Letters to the editor ...

Dear Moira A huge THANK YOU, as entirely due to your publicity we have found a simply wonderful home for Freddie (last month’s cat of the month). And he is now so happy, no longer on the streets, no longer cold and wet, and full of sores. He is warm, well-fed but most important of all, he is safe and loved. Thank you wonderful LINK! (From Garston Animal Rescue) I am absolutely delighted to hear about Freddie and letters like this mean so much. Thank you. Moira – Editor Dear Editor We all know that January/February can be a period of particular financial hardship and stress. Can we extend an open invitation to neighbours that we have a finance and debt advise support drop in at the Tuebrook Hope Centre every Friday morning from 9am to 12pm. No appointment is needed. We would urge any residents with debt and money problems to come along , bringing all relevant papers for a private and confidential interview and support. Councillors Steve Radord, Kevin Morrison and Billy Lake Tuebrook Hope Group

Cat of the month – Cleo FIRSTLY, we’d like to say a massive thanks to The Link for finding Freddie his forever home last month! He is now so happy, warm and well-fed but, most important of all, he is safe and loved. This month we have Cleo; she was found abandoned with her sister by one of our volunteers while they were in Spain. She had just given birth to kittens and was very weak. She was given medical care and a foster home while she recovered and the foster family didn’t have the heart to just put her back on the streets to

fend for herself. After several months of trying to find them a permanent home in Spain her foster carer was unable to carry on looking after them so our volunteer made the decision to bring them home to the UK. Her sister has managed to find her forever home but Cleo is still waiting. She is so very loving and affectionate given all that she’s been through and deserves to be loved. She’s two years old, good with dogs and a confident little lady needing a home away from main roads as she’s not used to cars. Please contact: Nancy

Programme wins support of over 40 businesses

Iceland and B&M saves the day for 29th Picton Scout Group bag pack WHEN members of the 29th Picton Scout Group arrived to do a bag pack in a Belle Vale store on Saturday, December 17 they were dismayed to find that they had been double booked. They believed the bag pack had been booked for them many weeks before. After panicking for a few minutes, they decided to ask in the shopping precinct if any of the other stores could help them out.

Iceland’s manager Ste very kindly allowed them to bag pack in the morning. Luckily they had Ernie with them, who had brought along the guide dog that he looks after. He knew the manager, Kayleigh, at B&M and was able to secure them a slot in the afternoon. Group Scout leader Pam Baines said: “We had spent many weeks planning our event to raise money for

our Million Hands Project, ‘Guide Dogs for the Blind’ and a defibrillator for Childwall Methodist Church and many, many thanks go to the managers of both shops. “We raised an amazing £528. “Well done to all the Beavers and Cubs who achieved their Community 1 Badge, and worked so hard, and thanks also go to the Group’s leaders and parents who supported us.”

ST MARGARET’S Academy has successfully secured work placements with some of the UK’s leading businesses. Year 10 students at SMA will be given the opportunity to work with some of the country’s most influential businesses, as part of the school’s newly launched ‘work inspiration programme’. The Aigburth school has worked tirelessly to forge important relationships with business leaders, both locally and nationally, having invested increased resources into its careers provision this year. Organisations that have offered their support of the programme include Tesco, Boots and Barnardo’s, as well as Liverpool John Moores University, Copyrite Systems, and Wray Bros locally. The ‘work inspiration programme’ will see the first cohort of 60 students take part in a series of half day sessions from February as part of a 18-week placement scheme. The initiative was launched last year, with pupils attending weekly ‘world of work’ careers talks delivered by a range of industry professionals. The school’s enhanced careers provision aims

to lead the way amongst Merseyside schools, offering pupils the opportunity to explore future careers options before embarking upon their Sixth Form studies. Greg McLean, SMA’s dedicated careers and post 16 data manager, says: “In such a highly competitive job market, it is vital that students are given the opportunity to consider their options from an early stage. Starting careers provision in lower school, means that pupils can explore these interests and passions before embarking upon their GCSE’s and post-16 study, helping them to pick the right courses and qualifications for their chosen field. “This ensures that pupils choose the right path to

What makes someone abuse someone they love?

Why not decide to survive domestic abuse? Lots of people don’t bother reporting incidences of domestic abuse. Often they put up with abusive behaviour for years before they do anything about it, if in fact they ever feel brave enough to do anything about it There are plenty of statistics about the numbers of people who suffer. Anyone can be a victim, women and men, old and young, straight and gay, the wealthy and the less well off. Domestic violence does not discriminate Why does it occur? There is no one single cause. It is all about the abusers desire for power and control The definition of abuse is very wide. You don’t have to be hit to be abused It can include physical acts of domestic violence or threats, as well as emotional abuse It often plays out by the abuser isolating

Abusers are often very jealous people. At first it can seem as though they are just interested in you and caring, but then it escalates and quickly you can find yourself putting on a brave face, tip-toeing around, willing to do almost anything to try to keep the peace

You and your children deserve better Make it your resolution to give yourself and your family a safe start to the New Year Give yourself a break and some space to think, and to consider your options Don’t wait for an emergency to happen before you seek help In order to find out how we can help and to explore your options, please call in complete confidence………

People often feel ashamed of their situation and lie about their injuries

Hazel’s down to earth approach and commitment to client service epitomise the way she deals with her cases. Hazel has been involved in a number of high profile cases including, non-accidental injury, Child Neglect, Sexual Abuse and Domestic Violence within both private and public children law

The situation is made even harder when drugs, alcohol and mental health issues feature And so the abuse continues. It is never your fault, and it is rare for abusers to change (without seeking professional help) What can you do to stop it?

Leaving an abusive relationship takes a great deal of courage and it is a dangerous time The impact of abuse on victims and children is both severe and long lasting Please understand that it is not just happening to you, and there is help available

Hazel has extensive experience helping people deal with their family issues. Hazel heads GAD’s Family Department. Valentine’s Day need not be expensive LIFE ‘n’ STYLE with

JADE AINSWORTH

http://www.jadeainsworthgossip.co.uk

HI guys and welcome to February! I bet everyone is just getting over the Christmas celebrations then boom out of nowhere comes Valentine’s Day! There are mixed views over Valentine’s Day and I would say it’s possibly the most controversial holiday of the year. It brings happiness and love to some people while at the same time it can bring sadness and loneliness to others… no matter how you feel about it I think everybody should make some type of plans. For those who are happy with partners then the biggest problem now is how to come up

with the most romantic plan and get the best possible present. You can be romantic on the cheap but this does not mean being a cheapskate – just frugal and sensible! There are so many things you can do that don’t cost a fortune. Sometimes it’s the smaller thoughtful things that mean the most. I find it funny how some people rush around to prove their true love just on Valentine’s Day…what happens when the roses have died and the chocolates have been gobbled up? Personally, I think you should have a Valentine’s Day once a month that is totally dedicated to one and other – bearing in mind how busy day-to-day life can be, the weeks run away so why wait 12 months?! Why limit yourself?! Commercialism has gone so far that people are often made to feel inadequate if they are aren’t in a relationship. My advice is enjoy the single life! Believe it or not it is possible to be just as happy. I have been single the past four years and to be honest I’ve had an absolute ball. It falls on a Tuesday this year which is even better; it’s when it falls at the weekend you can feel a bit lost. So my advice is to grab friends, make arrangements to go to the cinema or get a takeaway or cook a nice meal. Tell them to bring the wine round and have a good catch-up talking about all your dating

Special places to show your love in Liverpool LOVE is in the air – it is the month which hosts Valentine’s Day, after all – but while Paris might be the city of romance, Liverpool has its fair share of places which are perfect for a proposal, ideal for a date and simply splendid to spend time in a twosome. You don’t have to spend a fortune in an expensive restaurant to share your love, just enjoy a couple of hours in a lovely location where love can bloom and blossom. We have chosen six city spots in which to say ‘I love you’… Bluecoat Gardens There’s always plenty going on at the Bluecoat Centre for contemporary arts, tucked away behind one of Liverpool’s busiest shopping streets but it’s the gardens of the Grade I, 300-year-old building which could help your love grow. The introduction of three levels has helped to improve and make the most of the garden’s special character. There’s a beautiful woodland garden where you can take a break from the outside world and enjoy peace and tranquillity – and maybe coffee and cake from the

café. Sefton Park Palm House The Palm House is a Grade II listed Victorian glass house which has been lovingly restored to its former glory. You can admire plants from around the walk after you’ve wandered around the beautiful parkland and lake which surrounds it. Love Locks, Albert Dock A string of love locks have been fastened to railings alongside the Albert Dock – so maybe you could attach yours! Before the padlocks are fastened in place they are engraved with initials or a personal message and the key is thrown away, usually into the water. The romantic gesture has become a worldwide phenomenon with thousands of locks being placed on famous bridges like the Pont de l’Archeveche in Paris. Lock your love in place before gazing at one of the most beautiful waterfronts in the world. Anglican Cathedral, Liverpool The cathedral offers one of the highest points in Liverpool and when the sun goes down and the lights come on it delivers one of

the most spectacular views. The building itself is a beautiful place in which to wander too, and wonder at the fifth largest cathedral in the world and its fabulous features. Crosby Beach Not too close to the city but a stunning location when the sun goes down and the light bounces off the water. You can wrap up warm and take a picnic complete with warming hot chocolate and admire the splendour and solitude – you may have the company of a few other men (notably Antony Gormley’s famous statues) but they promise only to enhance your special moment together, not interrupt it! Ferry ‘Cross the Mersey Not for nothing does this famous song endure as well as the experience itself. There is something extraordinary about standing on board the ferry with the wind in your hair, the sound of the rushing water and the views of the World Heritage Site. You can even create a bit of your own movie-magic and re-create THAT famous scene from the film, Titanic, just with a marvellous Merseyside twist.

Dog of the month – Bosco

BOSCO is a cheeky, but shy two-year-old lurcher cross who is looking for a home with an older family. He is a sweetheart with a timid nature and wants to meet people who will help him gently out of his little shell. He has a lovely bond with his carers and they are slowly introducing him to new friends. Bosco is very

affectionate and loves to have a fuss. Bosco enjoys the company of other quiet dogs, particularly the girls. He can live with children aged over 13, because of that shyness, but it doesn’t take long for him to form a loving bond with someone. He’d like a family that will let him settle at his

own pace and not rush him into new situations. He’s going to make a great addition to someone’s family and is so much fun when he’s playing off his lead and you can really see his more outgoing, confident side. If you think Bosco could be the four-legged friend you are looking for, you can visit Dogs Trust

Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP. It’s open 124pm, every day except Wednesday. You can contact them on 0300 303 0292, 8am-8pm Monday-Friday, and 9am5pm Saturday and Sunday. To find out more visit www.dogstrust.org.uk and follow the doggy “tails” on Instagram and Twitter.

What ‘don’t’ you want? A COUPLE of weeks ago I ran a seminar (‘90 Day Action Plan’), where I was helping everyone who attended to put together a 90 day plan of action on what they wanted to achieve. I went over everything with them: what will it look like, what will it feel like, why do you want it, etc, once the goals have been achieved? But not everyone can do this. So here’s another approach: ‘What don’t you want?’ – have a think about it and

once you have established what you don’t want then this will help us put a new plan in place.

How can I move away from this? Again, have a think. Make a list if it helps. Now, ask yourself What are your three biggest frustrations in your life right now? What are the pay offs if you can erase them from your life? Have a think and, when you are ready, put together

an action plan. This will help take you towards what you do want. Hope this helps. n Women only Boxercise and weight training sessions: sessions on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday evening and Saturday morning. n Kids Ju Jitsu and Kickboxing classes: sessions on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evening. Festive joy for Alder FC By Peter Harrison

THE period before Christmas saw the first division team record two tremendous victories that pushed them up the league table and back into contention for a top four finish. A crushing 8-1 victory against Copperas Hill saw man of the match Kyle Mulby score a remarkable six goals, with Peter Moore and Danny McNally also on the score sheet. There then followed a great 7-0 victory against high flying Salisbury Athletic, with that man Kyle Mulby bagging another brace, and Owen Jones, Antony Barnes and Peter Moore also netting. After the Christmas break they faced Premier Division

opposition in the Cup, in the shape of an away tie to Alumini. In a game that brought them great misfortune they had to use three goalkeepers as injuries during the game saw both Jack Ellis and Owen Jones injured during play. However, despite these setbacks they took the lead in the second half courtesy of Paul Halliday, after good wing play from Antony Barnes. With three minutes left, and the game almost won, a long range effort from Alumini took a deflection and the equaliser meant that extra time beckoned. With the deadlock not broken, the game was decided on penalties, with Alumini winning 6-5.

The Premier Division side have continued their consistent form and completed back to back victories over Warbreck with a 4-2 home victory, with Paul O’Hare, Gilbo and Joe Reynolds all finding the net, which sees the team lie fourth in the table and in contention to challenge for the title. After the Christmas break, they progressed in the Cup with a hard fought 3-2 victory against South Sefton Borough with Franny Smith scoring the all-important goal. With only two defeats so far this season the team have demonstrated a level of consistency which will hopefully see a return of some silverware at the end of the season.

The Homeless Games to return to Liverpool LIVERPOOL’S very own answer to the Olympic Games is set to triumphantly return to Liverpool this coming April. The initiative, which was founded in 2009, aims to bring together those who have experienced homelessness or social exclusion, in order to provide a platform that unites them through sport and companionship. Taking place at Wavertree Sports Centre, The Homeless Games will offer participants the chance to become athletes in a range of sports, regardless of their abilities. Activities include football, swimming, cycling and running as well as walking football, pool and board games. In partnership with

Liverpool City Council and the Liverpool-based retailer Healthy Foods Online, the games will also offer participants and the public with advice on health, education and employment. Using the games as a platform to improve the health and wellbeing of homeless people, to increase their feelings of self-worth and allow them to feel a sense of pride for what they have achieved on the day, both in sport and personal progression. Organisers of The Homeless Games, Eric Houghton and Steve Barton said: “The Homeless Games alone cannot make the difference. “It is only through working together that we can change lives. We need

everyone to play their part, whether you’re a support worker who can champion the Homeless Games within your organisation or and organisation who could support the day.” With the successful sounds of the Rio Olympics still ringing in our ears, there is little wonder why the 7th Homeless Games is set to be the most exciting and biggest yet. For further details on taking part, volunteering or sponsorship, please contact Steve Barton on 07764994906 or e-mail takepart@ thehomelessgames.org Follow The Homeless Games on Twitter - @ HomelessGames or Facebook – The Homeless Games

Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club hunting silverware NOW that the second half of the season is under way, a number of teams at Liverpool Sefton are still in with a chance of picking up some silverware this season. The men’s 1s are involved in a tight race for the league title. As the teams reconvened after the Christmas break only five points separated the top team from the side in fifth place, with Liverpool Sefton sitting in fourth place, three points off the top. The men’s 2s and 3s also sit in the top half of their respective leagues. In such

close leagues a strong finish to the end of the season will leave all teams hunting for honours. In the cup, the men are in the quarter final of the England Hockey National Vase. The last time the team entered in 2006 the side were victorious so the club is in a good position to emulate past glories. In other competitions, the ladies’ 3s have qualified for the semi-final of the Lancashire Cup and the 4s still maintain a chance of qualification. The ladies’ 3s

also sit second in the league and hope to continue their good form to the end of the season. Finally, the girls under 18s face a tough game against Repton in the England Hockey Plate. Despite being the underdogs the girls will be doing all they can to cause an upset. Of course, winning trophies is not the only barometer for success and it is pleasing to see membership numbers continue to grow, with plans to set up an extra men’s team now in motion.

South Liverpool on the up

By Jim Stanway

AFTER an extended Christmas break, South Liverpool FC have re-started their league season in fine style with consecutive wins against teams who are in contention for the league title. The league champions against the league leaders was a tasty appetiser for 2017 as South entertained Rainhill Town. A fine performance saw South race into a two goal lead through new striker Aaron Bowen and Gary Pollard

and although Rainhill got a goal back by half-time, Bowen extended South’s lead early in the second half to secure a 3-1 win. The following week South scored an impressive 3-0 win over high-flying Vauxhall Motors. An early goal by Bowen was added to by a superb free-kick from Alex Woodcock before half time. This was a double whammy for Vauxhalls as the free kick had been awarded because Woodcock’s chip had been handled by the Vauxhall keeper outside

his area, as a result of which he was sent off. South increased their lead early in the second half through a fine strike by Woodcock and missed several chances to extend their lead against the 10man opposition. South have now moved into the top half of the table and are not entirely out of contention to retain their title. The reserve team have also recorded two consecutive wins. A particularly impressive 5-3 win at fourth-placed Kirkby Town Railway saw the first match in charge

South’s Paul Lundon plays a ball in towards new signing Aaron Bowen.

for new reserve team manager David Rietdyk. A former first team captain, Rietdyk will be assisted by club chairman Billy Birch, who had been assistant manager to a previous reserve manager, Carl Buoey. A David Mee hat-trick was the highlight of the win at Railway and further goals from Adam Shelton and Gerard Forde were enough to see off the in-form Railway side whose manager Terry Naylor had won November’s manager of the month award.

The following week saw the reserves earn a 2-1 win at lowly West Kirby Reserves via two more goals from David Mee. The win was even more merited as West Kirby had drafted in several first team players as their senior team was inactive. The youth team have only played one match, a hard-fought 1-1 draw with local rivals Mossley Hill, but have numerous games in hand over their rivals for the league title and again face Mossley Hill in the quarter finals of the Liverpool County FA Youth Cup.
