NE word sums up the new Volkswagen Golf – brilliant. There is not a single aspect of this car that fails to impress. If the Ford Focus redefined the family hatchback market last year then the new Golf raises the bar by some margin. It will be arriving in the New Year priced from £16,330 and can be ordered now. With 28 million sold in the 38 years since it first hit the road, the Golf has become a mainstay of modern motoring. In one sense that has given VW the chance to hone successive generations but what has gone into the seventh version of the Golf is beyond expectations. VW will be keen to flag up its suave design, interior refinement and all round practicality but it is the way the new Golf drives which is remarkable. We have just tried the 1.4-litre turbo petrol and two-litre diesel versions and the car’s characteristics are peerless at this price. It sits on a new chassis – shared with the Audi A3 – is some 100 kilos lighter than before and comes with very clever electronics that create a near perfect drive. The car feels absolutely planted on the road with virtually no roll through corners and the steering, although neutral, is totally precise. Ford has similar stuff on the Focus but the Golf is far more of a driver’s machine. For the money there has never been a car that is as composed as this. Of the versions we tried – all in high grade GT trim which pushes prices up to between £22,050 and £24,625 – the 1.4 with VW’s seven-speed DSG auto box was smack on. All Golfs will feature fuel saving systems such as stop/start but the 1.4 engine takes things a stage further with a set up which cuts out two of the four cylinders under light acceleration. It cuts emissions to 110g/km and pushes official average fuel consumption up to 60 to the gallon – not far short of the diesel. On a mountain run at the car’s launch in Sardinia we managed to average 46.3mpg in the 1.4-litre DSG and 55 in a manual 2.0-litre diesel. The cut out cylinder technology is available only on the GT models and priced from £24,120 but it really

PARBUSTER: The new Volkswagen Golf raises the bar for family hatchbacks and is peerless at the price is a car which lacks for nothing. With its turbo on song the engine pumps out 140PS resulting in a 0-60 acceleration of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 132mph. Rapid fire paddles shifters are on hand for some sporty gear changes and on similar routes we found the DSG version marginally more economical than the six-speed manual which returned 45.5mpg according to the onboard trip computer. For the first time the Golf is being fitted with a multi-mode drive
selector which can be switched from normal to sport, comfort and eco settings as well as being programmed independently by the driver. However, the car is so nimble there’s no need for anything other than the normal setting. The eco mode – which dulls throttle response and moderates the air conditioning – may be handy around town but generally the Golf acquitted itself handsomely without any enhancements. Inside the new Golf is roomier,
especially in the rear and that is down to a longer wheelbase. The difference is most noticeable on the five-door versions and the attention to detail in the cabin is typically Germanic. Fold down the rear seat armrest for example and there is a double cup holder which can be adjusted to accommodate virtually any size of container. There is also a ski flap through to the boot which itself is also bigger than before at 380 litres – enough to carry three cases. Maximum cargo capacity is 1,270

litres and the height of the rear sill has been lowered to make loading easier while the Golf can be fitted with a retractable tow hook which deploys at the pull of a lever. There is even a surprise when you open the fuel filler cap which pops out gullwing fashion at a similar angle to the body cuts. Standard features across the range include an electronic parking brake and a touchscreen central display and all but the basic models have an emergency anti-collision braking system.

STAND-OUT STYLE: The Subaru XV is a chunky five-door, five-seat all-wheel drive crossover with plenty of road presence

HE brand once synonymous with cool, high powered turbo saloons was starting to become a bit like the loaf round the corner of the cupboard. By the time you remember the thing’s there, staleness has set in so you reach for something a little more appetising. Japanese car maker Subaru was certainly in need of a fresh injection of vitality, so it decided to serve up a double. Recent months have seen the arrival of the stylish BRZ 2+2 coupe, preceded earlier this year by the XV crossover, with the manufacturer’s entire line-up propped up with something they call ETCo. This has been hailed by Subaru as ‘the most comprehensive aftercare package in the UK’ and includes the likes of minor dent, scratch and alloy wheel repairs,

monthly wash ‘n’ vac, lost key replacement plus service collection and delivery. The XV, a chunky five-door, five-seat all-wheel drive crossover, certainly has some presence on the road, though you would notice just about anything coated in a Tangerine Orange paint job. And when you check out the price range – which puts it up against the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Land Rover Freelander – it becomes clear this lifestyle Scooby has its work cut out. While the traditional crossover
tends to lean more heavily towards comfort hatchback than hardcore 4x4, the XV both looks and feels more biased towards an off-roader. Its 2.0-litre Boxer engine is strong, frugal enough to return 42 miles per gallon and sounds like an old fashioned diesel with that low speed clatter that ensured you never mistook the green for the black pump. But it works really well showing plenty of mid-range pulling power in a vehicle that for me was able to nimbly sidestep the various saloons and coupes waiting to be towed out of a waterlogged racecourse car park. Inside we’re talking a high seating position with ample head, leg and shoulder room, including for three rear passengers, and a fair size boot with extra storage tray beneath. The rear seats fold down too boosting the load volume to a useful

A smart move POWER PLAY: The smart fortwo electric drive coupe

MUST admit that the smart car concept has never really thrilled me but the advent of electric drive is a very smart move by parent company Mercedes-Benz. Due for release in the Spring of 2013, the fortwo electric drive coupe is so new it has not even been given a price tag or an insurance grouping. I expect it will be in line with current smart pricing structures, but even if it is a lot more expensive, it will still represent a good buy, for this diminutive runabout has, at long last, found its true role. It is compact, manourevable in the tightest spots and has a great turning circle. It has electric power steering and a soft touch automatic gear programme with kick down function that is very smooth and lurch free. This electric vehicle is also very easy to park due to deep windows, and all round vision. It will certainly compete for those 'mini only' tight parking spots. With a non-fade performance in restricted speed areas, it also has some bite with a top speed of 78mph. And it must also be the best school or shopping vehicle around, with room for two adults in comfort. It also offers occupants security in the shape of ABS, ESP, crash sensors, airbags front and side, central locking, and up to 340 litres of luggage room – more than a Ford Fiesta, which is surprising for a car of such tiny proportions. I cannot think of any other urban vehicle with such high 'town car' credentials and the addition of CONGESTION electric power CHARGE: The smart has definitely can be charged from moved the smart car up to the mains another level. Eco friendly, clean and silent, it has a range of 90 miles on a full charge, making it ideal for drivers who cover around 30 miles a day, which, according to the statisticians, is the majority of us. It does not burn up power fast and with a light touch of the pedal can be encouraged to stay in the charging zone whilst driving along on the flat. Hills have the potential to burn electricity but a sensible driving style and the soft approach pays dividends. I spent over an hour driving around town and returned to base with more miles on the range meter than I had set off with – very impressive.
