Hospital Design / Master Plan & Design Partner: Lishu Chen Location: Jinshan, Shandong 2011.03 - 06
BACKGROUND Jinan, located along China's East coastland, is the political, econimic, cultural and technical center of Shandong Province. The Master Plan divided the city into three parts: western developing area, central ancient area and eastern developing area, which are jointed together by Jingshi Road. The whole spacial layout is simple and clear. Our work - east part of Shandong Provincial Hospital is located on the north side of Jinshi Road. The site is 200m from the east to the west, and over 500m from the south to the north. Under the requirement and special pattern of the Master Plan, we designed a linear structure - several cores on one axis, to reflect the growth and development of Jinan.
Present condition
PLANNING STRUCTURE Concept Principal Axis: connecting the city's main developing axis in vertical and complying with the city's main developing axis. Cell: developing-need oriented, individual cell based on clinical function. Relation: the principal axis linking each cell together. Image: setting up hi-quality architecture for the city. Planning Structure of Jingshi Road
Site Development Structure
Architecture Layout
SITE PLAN Function Division Emphasize the relevance, functionality and readability Through classifying, gathering, sorting, and reorganizing, simplify the complex function. The main buildings are easily identified and reflect the hospital's function. Linear layout makes medical consultants, the patients and visitors are strongly connected.
Spacial Structure Quiet: according to the master plan, we designed high-rise plate-type buildings, and made sure that each building's size varies regularly. Activity: along the Jingshi Road, our height is higher than our neighbor and then falls lower than others, just like a great hwak spreading its wings. Function Division

City Boundary: continue the city developing boundary, and emphasize the regional planning spirit of Volanthawk. 1. Diversity and Uniformity Boundary of Jingshi Road: in harmony with the city, the theme is Uniformity. Boundary of Xianwen Road: interacting with the city, combining uniformity with diversity. 2. Architecture Boundary under planning Treatment buildings, along Xianwen Road and varying regularly, correspoind to the city pattern, which makes the space more interesting.
ARCHITECTURE CONCEPT
ARCHITECTURE CONCEPT Procedure The main stream line of the new outpatient building is a linear pattern, which relies on a main street, a connection corridor and an interior working corridor to join each functional unit. Horizontal and vertical traffic organization On the floor plan, east-west lengthways vestibule and transverse vestibule make up the whole traffic structure. Treatment corridor joins each functional unit and makes the space easily identified and arrived.

The northland is 8m lower than the southland, and hills are on the northeast side. Drainage is planned from the northwest to the southeast. Under such conditions and avoiding topographical reform, the designing elevation of the function building on the south side is 0.000m. At the same time, the south land joins the greenbelt on Jingshi Road, turning out a continuous greenland, to amply people's visual horizon.

Beihu Resorts / Master Plan & Design Location: Beihu wetland, Changchun 2012.12 - 2013.01
BACKGROUND
C
The site is located on an islet in a wetland park in Changchun. Changchun is the capital city of Jilin Province, and the economical, cutural and political center of the Northeast China from history. In modern time, Changchun is known as the city of car, movie, university, forests and moutains, and ice scuplture. It has been drawn more and more international focus.
B
28km to airport
The site is in the north part of the city. It faces to the new city area under-planning to its east. The railway station is 8.5km away to the south, and international airport is 28km away to the east. A more complex and convenient road net is under construction. The project is potential to be a new tourism center.
A
According to the master plan, the site is defined as the commercial land. Construction plot rate is control under 1.5, and greenland ratio is over 30%. Building density is less than 35% and height lower than 24m.
8.5km to rail station
A
B
C
The whole wetland park is the lower reaches of Yitong River, the mother water of Jilin Province. It is the ecological basis of the city, and creates precious natural scenes. The scenery is pleasing, view horizon is wide and vegetation is rich.
The site gains the attraction that is unique but unrenewable. The design is not only focusing on the economic profit the company can gain from constructing the hotel, but aware of the protection and continuity of the environment.
The site is on the islet, which is high in the south and low in the north, the difference is 15m. Along the east side in the middle is the plain. A narrow strait seperates the south part from the main site which creates the experience of independence and privacy.
DESIGN STRATEGY
HILL — hills both in the north and south
The hotel is arranged to maximize the advantage of the original terrain and landscape. It is considered to have a continuity with the wetland landscape, protect the local eco-system and make profit at the same time.
WATER — rich water resources around
Within the mid-plain, the main facilities and public space is arranged to share the largest scene view. The north group is designed to have a good connect between the hill height and the lake view. The south islet is designed as advanced VIP group to have independence and privacy. Each group is connected by traditional Chinese corridors.
ISLET — island site surrounded by water
Jungles at the entrance block the view and give the privacy of the hotel. The central plain is the central garden of the hotel to have a best view of the whole wetland. Each guest room has a private and unique garden that responds to the surroundings, moving the outside . Open corridors link the rooms together and create a long gallery of moving wetland scenes.
Insite Open Space Outsite Open Space
The blue points are the joints of the water and the land, linking and directing to different part of the site. The orange points is the flat part that could be constructed.
Lake-view Band Bottleneck-view Band Gullet-view Band Towards-site Band
Different size of water channels give the diversity of the lanscape. It is important to arrange the relationship of "view" and "being viewed" in different parts.

Installation MArch, Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, UK
Siren / Cybernatics Installation UCL Exhibition, London, 2013.1.7 -2013.1.13
Inspired by mythical characters Siren, the installation is designed to captivate and lure people towards it with its mysterious looking mechanical arms; one rubbing the rim of the wine glass to produce seductive musical tones, and another one pouring red wine into the wine glass. As someone comes closer, Siren splashes wine towards him/ her, shocking the victim instantly, before returning to its previous actions, looking for its next prey.

Cymatics / Experimental Research London & Tromso, Norway, 2012.11.7 -2013.2.28
Cymatics is the study of visible sound and vibration. This part is mainly conducted to lay a theoratical basis for the later design work. The Sub-zero water based cymatics tests was produced in Arctic Circle Expedition by Bartlett Studio. Experiments attempted to observe change in Cymatic behaviour as the temperature dropped to -25 °C. In the background, the northern lights perform their own mesmerising patterns. The site also inspired Yifan to design her final project in the astrological setting of UCL’s Observatory.

Instrument / Sound Installation London, 2013.3.1 -2013.6.6
Through a series of designed sound-based and materialmodulation investigations and experiments, the designer uses cymatics (the study of visible sound) to develop a serials of devices to acoustically create and reflect spatial configurations. Cymatics can offer a visualised representation of space acoustics and interaction with people, enabling an exploration of the human experience of both auditory and visual impressions to offer novel understandings of environments defined by both spatial and material characteristics.
