Bomb Threat
from On-Call Manual
• The receiver of bomb threat will be directed by the dispatcher of Public Safety to immediately implement evacuation of the building. The receiver of bomb threat will assure that they give dispatcher their name and location that they will meet with the first Public Safety officer who arrives at the scene. If the residence hall is affected all RAs and staff will immediately be notified to commence evacuation of the building in an orderly manner. All persons evacuated must be at least 1,000 feet away from building. Do not pull fire alarm, unless directed by public safety officer.
No one is to re-enter the building at any time, until the “All Clear” is given by the Director of Public
Safety or his/her designee. • The Department of Public Safety will implement the LIU mass communications alert system as per emergency management procedure. • All student-specific and situational information must be kept confidential whenever possible.
Crimes Against Property
• When personal or university property is destroyed, Public Safety should be called immediately (even if it is after the fact). An officer will respond right away. • The officer will ascertain whether the area is safe for the student and/or the campus community and take whatever action is deemed necessary. • If a victim is involved, they will be advised of their rights to file a report with the Police Department. • Whether or not the student chooses to report the alleged crime to the Police Department, a Public Safety Officer will take a detailed statement and ample photographs so that LIU can conduct its own investigation. If the incident occurred in a residence hall, the On- Call Administrator present should also complete a report. • If the alleged perpetrator is a non-student, or a non-employee of the LIU community, the person will be issued a letter of “no-trespass” from campus by the Department of Public Safety with the explanation that violations could lead to arrest. • If the student is a resident student who no longer feels comfortable in their permanent room assignment, they will be provided with a temporary room while the matter is investigated. If the resident desires a permanent room change, the On-Call Administrator can coordinate that change along with the On-Call Supervisor. • Large-scale vandalism to university or personal property should be reported to Student Affairs leadership at the time of the incident. • All student-specific and situational information must be kept confidential whenever possible.
Death of a Student
• The Department of Public Safety should be contacted and notified of the death of a student. (If this occurred on campus, the likelihood is that Public Safety would be the first to be aware of the crisis.) If the student was found in a residence hall or another on campus location, the student should not, and any surrounding belongings should not, be touched. • Student Affairs leadership and On-Call Supervisor should be notified immediately. • On-call staff will work with Public Safety to divert traffic or onlookers from the surrounding area. • Student Affairs leadership will determine who will contact the parents of the student if they have not yet been contacted and contact: • Public Relations representative • The Campus Crisis Team
