Daniel Enkaoua / That Which Remains Jonathan Hirschfeld In the opening of one of the constitutive texts on modern art,

Thus, I suggest understanding Daniel Enkaoua’s paintings as a

Modern Painters (1843), its author John Ruskin suggests a simple exercise: Draw a square and a circle on a white sheet of paper.

Darken them well. Hang the paper on a wall and move away. Move to the point from which it is impossible to discern the square from the circle. Ruskin was interested in what remains once distance has blurred the difference between the shapes. He was thinking of the landscape painter painting a tree from afar. Naturally, the painter isn’t depicting every single leaf; the form of the leaves does not appear in the painting. However, the viewer knows that the leaves are there. Something of the leaves survives the sieve of distance, gaze and transformation into painting. Something remains.

search after that same essence that survives the removal of all signifiers of identities and essentialities. Painting of that which remains.

We tend to think of vision as a practice of discovery. We identify this discovery with sight and light. Yet vision conceals when light dazzles, brightens and erases. In truth, discovery is often done with eyes shut. With hands, lips, fingers, in the dark, in dream, in thought, in laboratories, in mathematics, in poetry. Appearance is often a screening of ideology. We arrange it on the lens and it colors our perception. Painters in quest of innocent vision know not what they seek.

I often think about people who undergo drastic changes. People who enter witness protection programs, change name, hairstyle, appearance, language. People who recover from an illness, become religious or are “reborn.” Or people who experience a traumatic event that transforms their character. I wonder about that X that remains.

Like Theseus’s boat, once the oars, sails and last of the beams are replaced. Is it still Theseus’s boat?

I recall Freud’s introduction to the Hebrew translation of Totem

and Taboo where he turns to himself in the name of his Hebrew speaking readership and asks: without religious belief, without keeping Jewish customs and without a link to Zionism, what in you is Jewish? And he answers: most probably the essence.

Hence, the task of the painter determined to capture that which remains is to meet the world that eludes vision. I assume that the exemplary solution is to paint that which you know from the bottom of your heart: your family. Enkaoua paints his wife and children.

His familiarity with them goes beyond vision. Even more so in the case of his self-portrait. He paints from life, but his vision contains knowledge that evades sight.

He paints the distance. If you spend a long minute gazing at a white wall or at complete darkness, you will see pink and purple flickering in the air. I don’t know what these flicks are. Perhaps the remnants of unsolved visual information. Perhaps minute flecks and moisture in the air that capture random specks of dust that float in the world. The electromagnetic plankton of the ocean of being, to which are sent fishing nets of sight. He paints figures who are fully aware of his gaze. They transmit this awareness back to him. This gaze, which circumvents vision via familiarity, via the glistening and the glowing, via the large white, empty walls that are painted grey purple pink yellow through the atmosphere, is Ruskin’s distant gaze at the square and circle. It is a gaze that loses a lot. The figures are not locked. As in the famous principle of physics, they remain a row of undecided potentials.

and so on. This is Schrödinger’s wife; these are Schrödinger’s children.

Most of all I think of the paintings of the children. The greatest painters of children in the history of art were very fast painters. Van Dyck has a wonderful oil sketch of the daughters of Charles I. They were too young to pose and needed to be caught in moments.

In Enkaoua’s painting, nothing is one thing. Every painterly event is an encounter that gains its value and meaning from its surroundings.

It is yellow in relation to grey, which is purple in relation to orange,

I think of Frans Hals’s children paintings, in which not only the children are laughing but so is the entire painting. Especially, I

John Singer Sargent. What makes a painter an excellent painter of children? – Well, I think that apart from speed there also needs to be a certain mental disposition. I call it a basic alienation toward the world. This is so because the thing that must be captured in a painting of a child (and this is where Sargent’s genius shines) is their existence in a world designed and controlled by adults. Their gazes turn upward. Everywhere they see legs and hips. The chairs and door handles are too high for their reach. It is not their world.

They are not people but people to be, in training. Great painters are always sensitive to children’s inherent loneliness.

I believe Enkaoua paints slowly, continuously, in ongoing sessions, and that his family members are seasoned and adept models. Nonetheless, the feeling is of fast painting, of figures that are somewhat lost, occupying a world that is empty and foreign.

Like the Giacometti’s figures, of which Sartre observed that, try as you might to get near them, you will never manage to reach them – they contain distance at the core of their being.

When I look at them, Enkaoua’s figures seem perforated. With mouths that are often open, eyes that are purple holes, open to the abyss, which surely lurks behind all this grey purple pink. I wonder if the thing that pierces them is the gaze of the painter from in front or the purple abyss from behind. I think about Merleau-Ponty, who thought the painter could not attain ownership over the things before his gaze, “the see-er does not appropriate what he sees; he merely approaches it by looking, he opens onto the world.” And then the inversion, which is fitting for the feeling I try to express concerning those purple eye buttons: “And for its part, that world of which he is a part is not in itself, or matter. My movement is not a decision made by the mind, an absolute doing which would decree, from the depths of a subjective retreat, some change of place, miraculously executed in extended space.” 1 This is a gaze that does not discover, affirm, recognize, note, locate, map, enumerate, organize, classify, measure, compare or frame the object but is absorbed in it and returned from it. These are spacious paintings. Almost always depicting one figure. Painting in short brushstrokes. Fast. Rich. The background the same greyish purple wall, containing the forming rhythm of the figure. The basic tension of the paintings stems from the brushstrokes’ will to autonomy, like the stains of Cezanne or Uglow; yet the painting in its completeness strives toward entropy, like a Turner landscape.

Ponty writes: “The painter, any painter, while he is painting, practices a magical theory of vision. He is obliged to admit that objects before him pass into him or else that… the mind goes out through the eyes to wander among objects; for he never ceases adjusting his clairvoyance to them… He must affirm…that vision is a mirror or concentration of the universe or that, in another’s words, the idios kosmos opens by virtue of vision upon a koinos kosmos”. 2

This explains why often our recorded voice sounds unfamiliar to us; why our faded passport picture seems so unlike us, since it contains only the optic in us. We refuse to acknowledge that humans, that we, can be reduced to that which is perceived by the senses.

I wish to end in the simplest words. Poetry books are full of love poems, yet only a few “love paintings” are found in museums.

Enkaoua’s paintings are love paintings. The painter’s love is directed at that essence in his loved ones, which will persist in them even after every bodily cell of theirs is replaced. Enkaoua paints that which remains.

Daniel Enkaoua’s still-life paintings reveal a fascinating duality.

They suggest a non-hierarchical ontology. The object receives the same gaze and treatment as the “background,” the kind of attention a person “entering the frame” would have received.

Throughout the history of Western thought there have been several attempts to think the world from a non-human perspective, most famously in Martin Heidegger’s philosophy. His ontology lacks subject/object relations. It is the opposite of the Cartesian cogito: a recognition of sorts that exists independently and separately from the world of things.

However, it is obvious that the paintings were painted by a human being. Someone occupied the subjective position. He perhaps tried to be a pure, innocent eye. Surprisingly, these stilllife paintings are full of the quivering flecks of purple and pink light, a Lacanian anxiety of the gaze, of the self-conscious object.

Hence, it can be said that it is not that nothing in Enkaoua’s world is subjective. On the contrary, nothing is an object: the inanimate is saturated with the vitality of the gaze.

‫המשותף ‪ ”.‬זה מה שמסביר מדוע לעיתים קרובות קולנו המוקלט נשמע לנו כה‬ ‫זר‪ ,‬מדוע תצלום הזיהוי שלנו ברישיון ובדרכון מרגיש כל כך לא דומה לנו‪ .‬כיוון‬

‫אלו הם ציורים מרווחים‪ .‬כמעט תמיד של דמות אחת‪ .‬המצוירת במשיכות מכחול‬

‫שהוא מכיל רק את האופטי שבנו‪ ,‬ואנחנו מסרבים להכיר בכך שהאדם‪ ,‬שאנחנו‪,‬‬

‫קצרות‪ .‬מהירות‪ .‬עשירות‪ .‬כשהרקע‪ ,‬אותו קיר אפרפר סגלגל‪ ,‬ממשיך את מקצב‬

‫ניתנים לצמצום לנתפש בחושים‪.‬‬

‫העשייה של הדמות‪ .‬המתח הבסיסי של הציורים נובע מכך‪ ,‬שמשיכות המכחול‬ ‫שואפות לאוטונומיה כמו כתמים של סזאן או יוגלו‪ ,‬אבל הציור כולו שואף‬

‫אני מבקש לסכם במילים פשוטות ככל הניתן‪ .‬ספרי השירה מלאים בשירי אהבה‪,‬‬

‫לאנתרופיה‪ ,‬כמו נוף של טרנר‪.‬‬

‫אך במוזיאונים נמצא מעט מאד “ציורי אהבה”‪ .‬הציורים של אנקווה הם ציורי‬ ‫אהבה‪ .‬אהבת הצייר מופנית אל אותו יסוד באהוביו‪ ,‬שיתמיד בהם גם כשכל תא‬

‫כשאני מביט בהן נראות לי דמויותיו של אנקווה מנוקבות‪ .‬בפה לעיתים פעור‪,‬‬

‫ותא בגופם יתחלף‪ .‬אנקווה מצייר את מה שנשמר‪.‬‬

‫בעיניים שהן חורים סגולים‪ ,‬פעורים אל תהום‪ ,‬שבוודאי אורבת מאחורי כל האפור‬ ‫סגול וורוד הזה‪ .‬אני תוהה‪ ,‬אם הדבר שמנקב אותן הוא מבטו של הצייר מקדימה‬ ‫או התהום הסגול שמאחורה‪ .‬אני חושב על מרלו פונטי‪ ,‬שטען כי הצייר לא יכול‬ ‫לרכוש בעלות על הדברים במבטו “הוא רק מתקרב אליו באמצעות מבטו‪ ,‬הוא‬ ‫נפתח אל העולם” ואז בהיפוך שהולם את הרגש שאני מנסה לבטא אודות כפתורי‬ ‫העיניים הסגולים הללו ‪“ -‬ומצדו שלו‪ ,‬אותו עולם ‪ ,‬שהרואה מהווה חלק ממנו‪ ,‬אינו‬ ‫קיים כשלעצמו ואיננו חומר‪ ...‬תנועתי אינה החלטה של הרוח‪ .‬היא איננה עשייה‬ ‫מוחלטת הפוקדת ממעמקיה של פרישות סובייקטיבית‪ ...‬תנועתי היא ההמשך‬ ‫הטבעי של הראיה‪ ..‬היא הבשלתה‪ 1 ”.‬זהו מבט שאינו מגלה‪ ,‬מוודא‪ ,‬מזהה‪ ,‬רושם‪,‬‬ ‫מאתר ממפה‪ ,‬ממספר‪ ,‬ממיין‪ ,‬מקטלג‪ ,‬מודד‪ ,‬משווה או ממסגר את האובייקט‪,‬‬ ‫אלא נבלע בו ומוחזר ממנו‪ .‬פונטי כותב בהמשך אותו טקסט ‪“ :‬הצייר‪ ,‬כל צייר‪,‬‬

‫אם כן‪ ,‬משימתו של הצייר הנחוש ללכוד את מה שנותר היא לפגוש את העולם‬ ‫מסביב לראיה‪ .‬אני מניח שהפתרון המובהק הוא לצייר את אותו דבר שאתה מכיר‬ ‫ממעמקי לבך‪ :‬המשפחה‪ .‬אנקווה צייר את אשתו וילדיו‪ .‬היכרותו אותם היא מעבר‬ ‫לנראות‪ .‬קל וחומר‪ ,‬כשמדובר בדיוקן עצמי‪ .‬הוא מצייר מהתבוננות‪ ,‬בוודאי‪ ,‬אבל‬ ‫ההתבוננות הזו מכילה ידיעה‪ ,‬שעוקפת את הראיה‪.‬‬ ‫הוא מצייר את המרחק‪ .‬מי שיביט דקה ארוכה בקיר לבן או בחושך גמור‪ ,‬יזהה‬ ‫ריצודים וורודים סגולים באוויר‪ .‬אינני יודע מה אלו‪ .‬אולי הם שאריות של‬ ‫אינפורמציה ויזואלית בלתי מפוענחת‪ .‬אולי אלו הם גרגרים זעירים ולחות‬ ‫האוויר‪ ,‬לוכדים פירורי אור אקראיים הצפים בעולם‪ .‬הפלנקטון האלקטרומגנטי‬ ‫של אוקיינוס ההוויה‪ ,‬אליו מושלחת מכמורת הראייה‪ .‬הוא מצייר דמויות המודעות‬ ‫היטב למבטו‪ .‬מודעותן למבטו מוחזרת מהן‪ .‬המבט הזה‪ ,‬העוקף את הראיה דרך‬ ‫ההיכרות‪ ,‬דרך הנצנוצים‪ ,‬ההבהובים‪ ,‬דרך הקירות הלבנים הגדולים‪ ,‬הריקים‪,‬‬

‫אנתוני ואן דייק‪ ,‬הנסיכה אליזבת‪ 1650-1635 ,‬והנסיכה אן‪.1640-1637 ,‬‬ ‫בנותיו של המלך צ’ארלס ‪ ,I‬ה‪ ,1637-‬שמן על בד‪ 30x42 ,‬ס”מ‪ ,‬הגלריה‬ ‫הלאומית‪ ,‬סקוטלנד‪.‬‬

‫הנצבעים באפור סגול וורוד צהוב דרך האטמוספירה‪ ,‬הוא המבט של רסקין אל‬ ‫העיגול והריבוע‪ .‬הוא מבט שמאבד הרבה‪ .‬הדמויות לא ננעלות‪ .‬כמו בעיקרון‬

‫אני חושב על ציורי הילדים של פראנס האלס‪ ,‬בהם לא רק הילדים צוחקים‪ ,‬כי אם‬

‫הפיזיקלי הידוע‪ ,‬הן נשארות שורה של פוטנציאלים לא מוכרעים‪ .‬בציור של‬

‫כל הציור צוחק‪ .‬ובמיוחד אני חושב על מי שהוא בעיניי גדול ציירי הילדים‪ ,‬ג’ון‬

‫אנקווה‪ ,‬שום דבר אינו אחד‪ .‬כל אירוע ציורי הוא מפגש‪ ,‬הוא מקבל את ערכו‬

‫סינגר סרג’נט‪ .‬מהו שהופך צייר לצייר ילדים מצוין? ובכן‪ ,‬לבד מהמהירות נחוצה‬

‫ומשמעותו מסביבתו‪ .‬הוא צהוב ביחס לאפור‪ ,‬שהוא סגול ביחס לכתום וכך הלאה‪.‬‬

‫איזו תכונה נפשית‪ .‬הייתי מכנה אותה זרות בסיסית לעולם‪ .‬זאת מכיוון שהדבר‬

‫זוהי אשתו של שרודינגר‪ .‬הילדים של שרודינגר‪.‬‬

‫שאותו יש ללכוד בציורי ילדים (ובזאת גאונותו של סרג’נט)‪ ,‬הוא שהם חיים בעולם‬ ‫שעיצבו ומנהלים מבוגרים‪ .‬מבטם נשוא למעלה‪ .‬הם רואים רגליים ומותניים בכל‬

‫במיוחד אני חושב על ציורי הילדים‪ .‬גדולי ציירי הילדים בתולדות האמנות‪ ,‬היו‬

‫מקום‪ .‬הכיסאות וידיות הדלתות‪ ,‬גבוהים להם‪ .‬זהו לא עולמם‪ .‬הם לא אנשים‪ ,‬הם‬

‫ציירים מהירים מאד‪ .‬לואן דייק‪ ,‬יש סקיצת שמן מרהיבה של תינוקות צ’ארלס‬

‫אנשים בדרך‪ ,‬בהרצה‪ .‬ציירים גדולים היו תמיד רגישים לבדידותם האינהרנטית‬

‫הראשון‪ .‬הללו קטנות מדי בשביל לדגמן והיה צורך לתפוס אותן ברגעים‪.‬‬

‫אנחנו נוטים לחשוב על הראיה כעל פרקטיקה של גילוי‪ .‬אנחנו מזהים את הגילוי‬

‫‪ )1843‬מציע ג’ון רסקין תרגיל פשוט‪ :‬רשום ריבוע ועיגול על פיסת נייר‪ .‬השחר‬

‫והראיה עם האור‪ .‬אבל האמת היא שהראיה מסתירה שהאור מסנוור‪ ,‬מלבין ומוחק‪.‬‬

‫אותם היטב‪ .‬הצמד לקיר והתרחק‪ .‬התרחק עד לנקודה שבה שוב אינך יכול להבחין‬

‫האמת היא‪ ,‬שגילוי נעשה לעיתים קרובות בעיניים עצומות‪ .‬במגע‪ ,‬שפתיים‪,‬‬

‫איזה הוא הריבוע ואיזה הוא העיגול‪ .‬רסקין מתעניין במה שנשמר כשהמרחק‬

‫אצבעות‪ ,‬בחושך‪ .‬בחלום‪ ,‬במחשבה‪ ,‬במעבדה‪ ,‬במתמטיקה‪ ,‬בשירה‪ .‬מראית העין‬

‫טשטש את ההבדל בין ריבוע לעיגול‪ .‬הוא חושב על צייר נוף המצייר עץ מהמרחק‪,‬‬

‫היא לעיתים קרובות מיסוך של אידיאולוגיה‪ .‬אנחנו מרכיבים אותה על העדשות‬

‫הוא הרי לא מצייר כל עלה‪ ,‬צורת העלים כלל לא באה לידי ביטוי בעבודתו‪ .‬ובכל‬

‫זאת הצופה יודע שיש שם עלים‪ .‬אך משהו מהעלים שורד את מסננת המרחק‪,‬‬ ‫המבט‪ ,‬המעבר לציור‪ .‬משהו נשמר‪.‬‬ ‫אני חושב לעיתים קרובות על אנשים שעוברים שינויים דראסטיים‪ .‬נכנסים‬ ‫לתכנית להגנת עדים‪ .‬מחליפים שם‪ ,‬תספורת‪ ,‬מראה‪ ,‬שפה‪ .‬אנשים המחלימים‬ ‫ממחלה‪ ,‬חוזרים בתשובה או “נולדים מחדש”‪ .‬או להבדיל‪ ,‬אנשים שעוברים אירוע‬ ‫טראומתי או חוויה משנת אישיות‪ .‬אני תוהה‪ ,‬מהו אותו ‪ X‬שנשמר‪ .‬כמו בספינתו של‬ ‫תזאוס‪ ,‬מרגע שהוחלפו המשוטים‪ ,‬המפרשים ואחרונת הקורות הוחלפה אף היא‪,‬‬ ‫האם היא עודנה ספינתו של תזאוס?‬

‫עוד אני נזכר בדברים שכותב פרויד בהקדמה למהדורה העברית של טוטם וטאבו‬ ‫(‪ :)39‬הוא פונה אל עצמו בשם הקהל דובר העברית ושואל‪ :‬בלי אמונה בדת‪ ,‬בלי‬ ‫שמירה על מנהגים יהודיים ובלי זיקה לציונות מה יהודי בך?‪ -‬והוא העונה‪ ,‬כנראה‬ ‫העיקר‪.‬‬ ‫ובכן‪ ,‬אני מציע להבין את ציוריו של דניאל אנקווה‪ ,‬כחיפוש אחר אותו עיקר‪,‬‬ ‫ששורד את קילוף רוב המסמנים של זהויות ומהויות‪ .‬ציור של מה שנשמר‪.‬‬
