AWARD WINNING NEWSLETTER

Winter 2017 Edition

Meet your new Councillors • 2017 Year in Pictures Special • Sports Awards Winners

Mayor’s I would like to start by thanking all those who have made my time as Mayor so far such a pleasure. It has been an honour to represent this wonderful town of ours and I have enjoyed meeting many local residents. I look forward to meeting many more of you during the coming months. As those who know me will attest, there is no time of year I look forward to more than Christmas. Now, with the festive period upon us, I look forward to attending a variety of engagements; from traditional carol services, dinners, the Christmas Lights Switch On, and Wickmas to the many other wonderful events that Littlehampton has to offer. It is a time of year when many of us will be looking forward to spending time with family and friends, giving and receiving presents and enjoying festive food and other seasonal fun. However, please spare a thought for those without family and friends, those who are without warmth, food and shelter and for those in our community who are more vulnerable. Popping in with a card and a mince pie and staying for a chat with a neighbour who lives alone, or making a donation to a local shelter, would definitely make a positive difference. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who will be working over Christmas and so cannot be with their family and friends, including members of the Armed Forces, the Emergency Services, hospital staff, carers, the Harbour Board, the RNLI and those working in the hospitality sector. Please enjoy the festive season and look inside this issue to discover all the glorious events you can attend and take part in. On behalf of my family and the Town Council I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. With kind regards,

Deck the town with elves and twinkles (fa la la la la la la la la!) Famed for being Santa’s little helpers, the Littlehampton branch of the NES (National Elf Service) is busy helping to prepare a breath-taking display of festive cheer for the Town’s big illuminations spectacular on Friday 24th November. Making sure that everything is fully festooned; local elves are working with Littlehampton Town Council and the Trader’s Partnership to introduce a sparkling new range of lights and decorations, which will include the town’s first ever interactive display. With elves drawn by local artist Steve Carroll, residents are being asked to find their favourite elf on one of the town centre buildings and to strike a pose for an ‘elfie selfie.’ People are then asked to share their snaps on social media with #LAelfie. Seasonal cheer will commence in the town centre at 5pm, featuring live performances by The Silhouette Show, Rock Choir and magician Nick Clark. Mayor of Littlehampton Councillor Billy Blanchard-Cooper and a special guest will press the big ‘ON’ switch in the precinct at 7.15pm, where there will be a festive fantasia of street food and stalls selling locally made Christmas gifts and produce. Coinciding with Black Friday, many businesses will remain open, offering special deals and bargains, until around 8pm. There is also a chance to win 1.5kg of sweets courtesy of Bah-Humbug Sweets in St Martin’s Lane. Just find Santa and his reindeer in the town centre shops. Santa said: “Ho, ho, ho! If you want to win the sweeties you can find entry forms in the event programme, available from the Manor House, Bah-Humbug Sweets and many other town centre outlets. I do hope everyone will come and join in all the fun on offer. Don’t forget to take an ‘elfie selfie’ of yourself with my little pals.” For full details see www.visitlittlehampton.co.uk

Free parking is not just for Christmas! Littlehampton isn’t sELFish! You can always enjoy free parking for 2 hours; just pick up a disc from participating outlets.

Joining forces for youth services

Fulfilling the Town Council’s desire to extend youth opportunities in the Town, October saw the start of a new and exciting partnership between LTC and Arun Church (AC) marked by the launch of Arun Youth Projects, which replaces LTC’s Project 82 youth facility.

life skills through accredited schemes such as the Young Leader Programmes.

The result of magnificent work carried out by Project 82 and its talented team of youth workers, the new initiative sees LTC joining forces with AC, who were already working with Project 82 in the delivery of youth sessions, with the partnership creating a more focussed approach to sessions and resources for the town’s young people.

Councillor Ian Buckland, Chair of the Community Resources Committee, said: “The Council is committed to providing support and opportunities for young residents and delivering a joint service with AC is a positive step to achieving that aim. We are delighted that the previous youth workers were equally excited about the changes and have supported the transition. Also the young people have contributed immensely, particularly with the difficult task of choosing a new name, a job they did brilliantly.”

Managing the newly improved service for an initial period of three years, AC will work closely with LTC to ensure that the needs of the youth community are being met. Continuing to deliver all the social activities previously offered, there will now be extended opportunities for young people to explore their interests and to develop

Jon Jolly, Business Manager, AC, said: “We are truly delighted to partner with the Town Council to launch Arun Youth Projects and excited about providing new opportunities for young people together. Combining the excellent work of the Project 82 team alongside our existing community youth provision in Littlehampton,

Arun Local Plan

The hearing sessions into the examination of the Arun Local Plan ended on Thursday 28 September 2017. The Inspector will now consider the information before writing to Arun District Council (ADC) and setting out any significant issues arising from the hearings and examination. In parallel, and without prejudice to his findings on the soundness of the Local Plan, he has asked ADC to prepare a composite Schedule of Proposed Main Modifications for him to consider in due course. For updates see ADC’s website: www.arun.gov.uk/local-plan-examination

New Leisure Centre

Following the demolition of the dome, groundwork at the site of the new leisure centre has been prepared and the construction phase has now begun. Piled foundations have recently been completed and in the coming months the piles will be capped and the building foundations can then be constructed. For regular updates on the project please visit Arun District Council’s website www.arun.gov. uk/newleisurecentre or find the dedicated page on facebook.

A27 Arundel Bypass

Giving strong support to the principle of creating a bypass for Arundel that links the A27 to the west of the White Swan Hotel with the Crossbush junction, LTC believes that this will provide the much-needed highways infrastructure to support the large developments in the area. LTC is sympathetic to calls for a full junction between the A27 Arundel Bypass and Ford Road. In view of the increased pressure on the local highways network generated by the occupation of the new developments at North Littlehampton and the planned construction of the Lyminster Bypass, continuity of the network at this point was also considered an important part of the final scheme. LTC also wishes to state its support for the position that has been adopted by Arun District Council.

Improved route for walkers and cyclists on A259

A scheme to provide a safe and direct route for pedestrians and cyclists travelling between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton is underway. Measuring approximately 4.5km in length, the A259 will remain open throughout the works, but temporary traffic lights will be used periodically. Road users in and around the road may also notice survey work taking place, ahead of another major improvement scheme which will widen some 2km of single-lane road to dual carriageway. Due to start in mid to late 2018, a survey of the verges and footways and carriageway is already underway. For the safety of both the public and the workforce, traffic lights are essential while these investigations are in progress. The survey will confirm details including any utilities in the road that may need relocating or protecting. Find out more about the two major schemes, along with proposals for building a new bypass of the A284 Lyminster Road, at: www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/roadworks-and-projects

Meet Councillor Chris Blanchard-Cooper, Councillor for River Ward I was inspired to become a Councillor because… I was born and bred in Littlehampton and have lived here all my life. My family has strong roots here and my parents have always encouraged us to be actively involved in town events and organisations. I have recently taken early medical retirement and have the time to give something back to the town that has given me so much pleasure. The local issue I am currently most passionate about is… There is no one issue I am specifically passionate about – my passion is for the town and townspeople and wanting the best possible for them.

I was inspired to be a Councillor because… I love Littlehampton. It’s a great seaside town and I’ve lived and worked here all my life and want to give something back. The local issues I’m most passionate about are… cuts to our local NHS and improving our youth services. My favourite place to be in Littlehampton would have to be… the beach. How wonderfully lucky we are to have this beautiful, picturesque beach on our doorstep! I have so many childhood memories of my own, and now I’m fortunate enough to make some with my children. What might surprise you to learn is that… I love music and playing instruments. I play piano and am learning guitar with my daughter. You’re never too old to learn something new. What makes me happy is… positivity and gratitude. I like people who see solutions rather than problems. An attitude of gratitude is very much like a magnet; a law of attraction that will get you more of the same. What makes me angry is… bullying. I can’t abide it. Nothing makes me madder. My favourite TV show is… I love most cooking programmes, especially The Great British Bake Off. A motto I try to live by is… ‘The way you make others feel says a lot about you. Be kind. Always.’

My favourite area in Littlehampton is… the walk from Mewsbrook Park along the promenade and up by the riverside to the red bridge. I think the river and seafront are a big part of Littlehampton’s charm. I also love the Windmill Theatre, where I have performed from a young age and attended many productions and events. People might be surprised to learn that… I was a contestant on the TV quiz The Weakest Link with Anne Robinson and got down to the final three. I also auditioned for The X Factor and got to kiss Sharon Osbourne on the hand!

TOWNTRIVIA FROM BOOKS TO BEARS, OUR MUSEUM HAS HOUSED ALL SORTS OF TREASURES OVER THE YEARS…

What makes me happy is… live theatre, community spirit, acts of kindness and family and friends. What makes you angry is… rudeness, violence, apathy, inconsiderate people and lack of respect for others. My favourite TV show is… Any quiz shows or (guilty pleasure!) reality shows like Big Brother. I also love Strictly! for glitz and glamour, and I have to follow EastEnders as my husband is a massive fan. Thank goodness for catch up TV!

Littlehampton Museum was founded by the Littlehampton Nature and Archaeology Circle and was launched in a small room in Littlehampton’s public library in 1928. Since then the Museum’s collection has acquired many natural history objects and boasts a sizable archaeology collection. The original Museum also had a giant stuffed black bear guarding the entrance! It is not known what happened to this magnificent animal, but it is possible that it was sold at an auction during the 1960s. The first Curator was Mr E J Frazer Hearne who retired just after the Second World War.

A motto I try to live by is… ‘my glass is half full, not half empty – always look for the positives!’
