Garden City High School sophomore Ethan Meringolo has launched an effort to bring hope during these difficult times to local senior citizens and staff at The Bristal at Garden City. The Art Drop for Hope Project is an opportunity to connect people through the universal language of art. Ethan has seen first hand how much joy and happiness art can bring to those around him especially those who are feeling lonely and scared during the pandemic. The Art Drop for Hope Project's will address those most effected by the pandemic, our elderly. Due to precautions being taken, the residents of The Bristal are currently not able to leave their rooms or accept visitors. The artwork that the community provides will serve as a way to connect people through art, even if they are strangers. All local residents, independent of age or art skill, are encouraged to participate. Any drawing, painting or coloring
will be greatly appreciated. Be creative! With the support of Garden City High School Art Teacher, Ms. Marino, Ethan has met with the Head of the Recreation Department at The Bristal to discuss the project. The artwork gathered through this endeavor will be displayed on a rolling cart that will be shared throughout the Bristal facility for all residents and staff to enjoy. Artwork can be dropped off on the front porch at 79 Oxford Boulevard in Garden City and placed inside the weatherproof bin. Please tape an index card to the back of your artwork with the following information: First name and last initial, age, school (if applicable) and a message of hope for residents and staff at The Bristal. Artwork will be delivered to the facility by Ethan at least once per week on a scheduled basis as currently no visitors are allowed on site.
'Virtual Promenade' planned for local businesses A group of Garden City residents has created a Virtual Promenade for local businesses to encourage residents to shop locally between May 16 and May 22nd. The project, which was created by Joe Cianciotto and fellow alumni of the Garden City High School Class of 1991 as well as other residents, has attracted about 50 businesses to created virtual storefronts. Cianciotto says the event is a "cross between Small Business Saturday and restaurant week for the
digital space." The Virtual Promenade can be found at https://www.supportgclocal.com/ promenade “This pandemic is not something big government or even big industry could ever prepare for. In the vacuum it has been wonderful to see the community come together with the entrepreneurs, most of which are are small business owners in town who have stepped in to help each other make it through this crisis," Cianciotto said.
