The Garden City Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving team defeated longtime rival Manhasset last week by a score of 97-78. With solid swims from many of the girls, the team, led by coach Anne Sullivan and captains Julia Giordano and Morgan Degearo, is showing great depth and versatility as they head further into their season. The swimmers put points on the board from the start with three solid 200-medley relay swims. The first relay consisted of Katie Lew, Lauren Kuzma, Gabriella Meringolo and Rose Kelly. The second relay included Laura Clarkson, Julia Giordano, Olivia Ragusa and Cara Heaney. The final relay was Ashley Boccio, Abigail Brita, Emily Burns and Jessica Pedone. As they moved onto individual events, the team continued to build momentum with many outstanding
swims. 10 swimmers placed either first or second in their events. Divers Elsie Schaubeck and Kara Acinapuro had great performances, putting the team into a comfortable lead heading into the second half of the meet. The final 200-free and 400-free relay teams closed out the meet nicely taking first and second in each event. Swimmers in these relays included Gabriella Meringolo, Rose Kelly, Melody Pompay, Mia Bonvissuto, Elizabeth Fetherston, Heather Fanning, Katie Lew, Olivia Ragusa, Kelly McDonald, Olympia VanBlenis, Ellie Jewell, Brooke Tarr, Caity Bianchi, Alana Brown, Sarah Fetherston, and Allyson Kraff. The girls hope to continue their winning streak as they take on Plainview and Bellmore-Merrick before heading into their Championship meets.
