In Practice
Overlay keyboards are ideal for children to start off with when learning to use the keyboard as it allows them to link pressing a particular spot on the keyboard to a particular action on the screen. Mouse skills would involve learning to reposition the mouse in relation to the computer and teaching the children the technique of sliding the mouse and lifting it up slightly, so that the mouse hand is always at a sensible distance from the computer.
The Assessment Cycle

The assessment cycle will help describe the links between your documentation and planning. This particular cycle has been used in early childhood settings for a long time, so ensure that the complete cycle is in place.
In Practice
The best way to demonstrate occurring in the learning environment is through examples provided by Raban (2010) who discusses the case where children are engaged with a particular activity or experience and realise that their learning can be enhanced with a specific resource. She offers a more explicit approach to the assessment cycle above in a four step process.
1. The children engage with others in the environment and join in experiences. 2. You monitor the children and document what you see them do. 3. You reflect on this documentation and identify what you have learnt about children and what the appropriate next steps are for them, indicating in your plans. 4. New plans clearly show what new steps are recommended for the group as a whole.

Assessment Cycle in ICT Capability
Another approach that you may consider when assessing a student’s ICT capability is that offered by Bennett (2007, p. 59). It is an information-handling system that focuses on statistical investigative methods. His method is based on what he believes to be assessment cycle for ICT (see diagram).
