Penning His Dreams Camdenton Teen Launches Successful Business

By Lee McCain

W

hile most teens are content to spend their days glued to the latest Wii games, or cruising Facebook for an update on the mundane, fifteen year old Jonathan Frost of Camdenton is turning out a product line of beautifully crafted pens that have become a successful and ongoing business for him. “I watched my dad make pens for Christmas gifts on his lathe and I saw it was a way to make money, so I started doing it,” the articulate Camdenton High ninth-grader said during

a telephone interview. “I sell them at the Carhartt store in Lake Ozark, and to my teachers. And I make them for birthday presents. My teachers love them,” Jonathan reports. Jonathan—who just entered high school after being home schooled until now—not only enjoys support from his customers and teachers; his parents, John and Carolynn,

www.addmydeal.com back him one-hundred percent. “We really encourage our boys to be industrious, and it’s great to see them learning some of the trades their dad knows,” mom Carolynn says. “And for Jonathan, it’s a way he can spend time with his dad and get to know what his dad knows.” Jonathan’s dad says, “I am proud of the maturity and drive he has to succeed.” Jonathan isn’t the only entrepreneurial Frost in the house. His younger brother, Jordan, was a recent partner in the pen venture, “but I bought him out,” Jonathan says. “We pooled our money to get the pen business going, and once it was up and running I made him an offer to buy him out. Now he has his own lawn business, and I do the pens.” Apparently there’s a lot to pen manufacturing that the average user would never consider, but represent just another day at the office for pro pen maker Jonathan. “I buy 7mm brass tubes which I glue into a wood blank. Then I form the pen on the lathe,” Jonathan explains. From there he inserts the mechanical ink parts into the blank and then finishes the pens.

“They are twist-type pens, and they’re built to last.” But your typical high-quality wooden pen isn’t the only model in his product line. The inventive teen reports that his bullet pens consistently outsell his wooden ones. “They’re made from once-fired 50 caliber bullets and people like them a lot,” Jonathan says. His pricing is also in line with his customers. “The wooden pens sell for $20, and the bullet pens are $30.” Jonathan and his brother, Jordan are native Missourians. Mom Carolynn was raised in Arkansas and dad John grew up in California. The couple met in Bolivar and raised their family in rural Camdenton. Pens and lawns aren’t the only Frost brothers business, either. Jonathan raises cattle, which is later butchered at a Mennonite slaughterhouse. “Then we sell the meat to our relatives and we keep some of the beef for us, too,” Jonathan says. We’ve also got a milking cow, so I guess we’re pretty busy.” Jonathan—who is an ‘A’ student at Camdenton High School— also plays sports which he enjoys immensely.

And lest anyone think he’s unlike others in his age group, “I do like to play Call of Duty,” a popular militarybased video game. In the coming months Jonathan hopes to secure his driver’s license, “but I don’t know if I’ll be able to

afford a car and the insurance and gas and everything,” he says. If indications of his potential have any say in the matter, in all likelihood this budding businessman will be on the road soon enough. Probably behind the wheel of a Maserati. The Grand Glaize One of Missouri’s First Drive-In Theaters By H. Dwight Weaver

T

he concept for the drive-in movie theater was invented in 1928 by Richard M. Hollingshead and by the end of the 1930s there were more than two dozen such theaters in the United States By 1948 there were 828. The Grand Glaize Drive-In Theater, which no longer exists, opened in Osage Beach, Missouri, in May of 1949 at about the same time as the first drive-in theater opened in Carthage, Missouri. From 1950 onward, drive-in theaters opened all across Missouri including the Corrall DriveIn Theater in Eldon, the Camdenton Drive-In Theater and the Gravois Drive-In Theater in Gravois Mills.

The Grand Glaize Drive-In Theater was located along U.S. Highway 54 in Osage Beach, its screen standing not far from where Arby’s and Culvert’s restaurants are now located. The screen faced the KRMS radio station and the theater had a capacity of 328 vehicles on the berms of its gentle upgrade, which was an exceptionally large number of speaker sites for a drive-in theater of that period. “The people of the Lake area should be very happy over the location of this business in our community and we are confident that they will find Mr. & Mrs. Robert Smith, owners of the new Grand Glaize DriveIn Theater, fine people to know and

likewise fine associates,” said the Reveille newspaper May 13, 1949. The opening attraction was The Return of October staring Glen Ford and Terry Moore in Technicolor. The featured cartoon was Pig in a Polka. Since the concept of an outdoor movie which you could enjoy from your car was new, the owners felt the need to bal-

lyhoo some of the advantages of a drive-in theater in the grand opening advertising. These advantages included the following: Come Dressed As You Are: No one ever dresses up to go to the show. Come as you are... [in] overhauls (sic), house dresses, bathing suits, slacks... Remember no one sees you if you don’t get out of your car!

Gone But Not Forgotten The Arrowhead Lodge

hen long-timers gather and reminisce about how it used to be at Lake of the Ozarks, various landmark buildings are often mentioned; structures that had a memorable presence upon the landscape in their day. Occasionally these buildings, like the White House Hotel on the Bagnell Dam Strip, are still around but not currently occupied by a business, or may be in a state of ruin. Quite often it is a landmark building that has totally vanished from the skyline, roadside or lakeside. Arrowhead Lodge is one of the latter. It no longer exists and was located

at a high point along Bagnell Dam Boulevard (Business Highway 54 in Lake Ozark) two miles south of the dam overlooking the 16-milemark of the Lake. A vacant lot is there now awaiting future development. There was much anguish and gnashing of teeth by many longtimers when Arrowhead Lodge was torn down in 2006, a victim of changing times and a price tag for rehabilitation that would have been more costly than could be justified by the owner. For its owner, the property was considered more valuable than the historic struc

16 AmeriShop.biz ture that stood upon it. Times have changed. We are losing all of those cherished landmarks from the 1930s to the 1980s. But not all is lost. There are photos and recorded facts and memories to cherish. For our old landmark buildings these will probably be, in most cases, the relics we must settle for regarding their loss because the world moves on. Arrowhead Lodge was built in 1935 by Arthur J. Kelly, Jr. of Kansas City. Kelly chose a sevenacre site with 600-feet of highway frontage for his building. He bought the property from the Arrowhead Beach Club whose development included a beach and boat house along the lake on the opposite side of the highway. The Lodge was to be a “modern hotel with an exterior in stone and rough timber.” Kelly’s wife was a noted gardener and collector of antiques and created a shop for antiques and gifts on the hotel’s first floor. Because it stood alone along the highway in that day with half a mile or more of timber on each side,

and was an imposing two-story building, it attracted attention. Its rustic design was quite in style in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Today, this stretch of highway is heavily developed. Over a period of decades the Lodge guest list grew long with the names of notable people who crossed its threshold. Their photographs created a gallery of stars along the left wall of the lobby in later years. Among the distinguished guests were Harry Truman, Ronald Regan and orchestra leader Guy Lombardo. In 1938 it even housed a crew of Hollywood filmmakers when a scene from the first Jesse James movie was filmed at the lake. Kelly operated the Lodge for five years (see postcard photo of the original building, photographer unknown). In 1940, he sold to Bill Raynor Sr. Raynor advertised his place as the “finest hotel on the lake.” In 1946, Raynor sold the Lodge of Col. G. Edwin Popkess of St. Louis. In 1950, the 20-room lodge caught fire and burned to the ground. “Only the chimney

The Lodge also housed a fashionable coffee shop and a nightclub known as the Wigwam. The surviving chimney with its attractive fireplace was a centerpiece of the knotty-pine paneled lobby of the building (see postcard photo of the original lobby with its

fireplace and furnishings, photographer unknown). Popkess got busy and rebuilt the Lodge, preserving the chimney and a few rock wall fragments by incorporating them into the new building. Arrowhead Lodge reopened for business in 1953. Popkess added a swimming pool, reportedly fed by a spring,

www.addmydeal.com and operated the Lodge until 1975 when he sold to Eddie Jordan. Eddie kept the Lodge until 1992. During his tenure, the longest for any owner in the Lodge’s 71-year history, Eddie added a large glassedin dining area and an upstairs cocktail lounge. By this time the Lodge had 36 rooms, three bars, restaurant, main dining room and three meeting rooms. Eddie sold to Jim

Prentice in 1992 and he had it until 1999 when he sold to Darrell and Kaye Webery of Eldon. It changed hands again in 2001, going to Tom Tezak. In its final two decades the business struggled for survival but just wasn’t able to reward its hardworking owners with sustainable profitability. The Lodge closed in 2006 and went on the auction

block in April of that year. “This is truly a historic Lake of the Ozarks area landmark facility. . . . The selection of Native American artifacts and décor alone make this one auction you won’t want to miss,” said the auction notice. “The 36-room lodge is loaded with unique furniture. Area Trainer Says, “It pays to be fit!” By Tina Sullens for a fitness class or buy a fitness gizmo “as seen on TV”? There are many pills, bars, and “health” shakes available - how do I know what works and what doesn’t? Well I’m here to tell you that getting started doesn’t have to be so confusing. So take a deep breath - now let it out. Here we go! The simple fact is; one pound of body fat equals 3,500 calories. In order to lose one pound per week, you would need to burn 3,500 calories more than you consumed ow many people want to feel during that week. There are many and look better? Duh...I think different ways we can burn calojust about everyone wants that! ries. For instance, taking a walk! If But the hard part for most of us is you consume only the amount of getting started. Should I sign up calories appropriate for your height

H

and weight, you can lose an average of 10 pounds in six months just by walking at a moderate pace for one half hour per day. And any extra activity we get each day brings us that much closer to reaching our fitness goals. We all have to start somewhere. And jumping around doing crazy, high-impact aerobics or lifting heavy weights just isn’t for everyone. But with warmer weather on the way, we have more options to choose from so that getting fit doesn’t have to be something we dread. The key to healthy, long-lasting weight loss is selecting healthy food and eating often. I’m talking 5

to 6 small meals per day! Our lives shouldn’t consist of living from one fad diet to the next, starving ourselves, or completely omitting our favorite food from our diet. Simply put, when we consistently burn more calories than we consume, changes begin to happen. So start making healthier choices today! We have to WANT to be happy and feel good about ourselves from the inside out. Start making small changes one day at a time or even one meal at a time, and never give up. Former Missouri Capitol Is Vibrant

Historic St. Charles Once a Settlers’ Magnet By Ra’Vae Edwards

I

f you’re looking for an interesting place to explore in the St. Louis area, St. Charles is the place to go! Positioned just northwest of St. Louis on the Missouri River, St. Charles is the third oldest city this side of the Mississippi, founded in 1765. The area was founded by Louis Blanchette, a French Canadian fur trader. Blanchette originally named the area Les Petites Cotes (The Little Hills). Blanchette settled in the area in 1769 and served as its civil and military leader until he died in 1973.

Approximately two dozen buildings were constructed during that time era. The majority of the settlers of the area were French Canadians, however, at the time, the area remained under the Spanish Jurisdiction. In 1791, the first church was erected and dedicated by San Carol Borroemo and the town became known as Carolos del Misuri: “St. Charles of the Missouri.” Unfortunately, in 1916, a tornado in destroyed the historic church. In 1821, after Missouri was grant-

ed statehood, St. Charles served as the state’s first capitol. In the process of deciding where to place the state capitol, the area overlooking the Missouri River that was decided upon was not developed and St. Charles was selected as the temporary site beating out eight other cities.
