Municipality of Nijmejen - Urban Planning

THE MUNICIPALITY OF NIJMEGEN:

INTERVENTION COMPONENTS:

[4]

The Municipality of Nijmegen has strong elements throughout the city, such as a strong shopping district, train station, bus depot, waterfront, and residential areas. However, between some areas there is a lack of accessibility between these elements. This lack of accessibility is caused by the lack of cohesion in roadways, walkways and bicycle paths. Additionally, the lack of public green was a stand-alone deficiency, as well as a method of providing visual cohesion and addition of value to the city.

[5]

Simultaneously there is a deficiency in the connectivity of the Plein 1944 to the rest of the city. Although there is one main avenue which connects the train station to the Plein, the goal is to provide an additional, more direct path of travel. Along this path of travel, the goal is to improve the spatial quality along the roadways as well as the building facades. Specifically to improve the quality of the building facades within the Plein 1944, as to stimulate attraction to the Plein and therefore stimulating accessibility to shopping and subsequently stimulating the economy. The main concept of this project is that of Cohesion. Through the implementation of this concept, it will create added monetary value within the city, stimulate movement and economic growth, and provide a pleasant environment for its inhabitants. The target groups for this intervention are the residents and non-residents who visit Nijmegen for shopping.

[2] Underground parking structure / turn-around / urban park. This will decrease inner-city traffic, provide an end point for commuters to park and walk and create an additional green area for the city. This green area, although close in proximity to kronenburgerpark, will provide a different type of green area. This will be accessible for the inhabitants of the adjacent residential areas, a rest area for adjacent business people, as well as a rest area for pedestrians between the train station and Plein 1944. [3] Creation of cohesion within the roadways, as well as cohesion of landscaping. This will create visual cohesion as well as visual cues towards the city center / Plein 1944.

Item [3] will be next in sequence. This will require roadway demolition and rebuilding. Item [4], the renovation of Plein 1944 is the most substantial of all interventions mentioned. In reality, this project will be delayed due to the necessity for archeologists to catalog and archive all remains below the park. However, for the scope of this project, part [a] will encompass the aesthetic qualities of the plein. The building typology is already that of mixed use. Therefore, the business function must be changed along with the facades. Simultaneously, the park will undergo tremendous renovation of the central space. See item [c] for new functions to be included.

During Phase I of the design, the key components will be completed. This will ensure the goal of the project as well as provide precedent for Phase II of this project. Item [1] will be satisfied by the completion of item [2]. The addition of landscaping to Tunnelweg, using Van Schaeck Mathonsingel as precedent, will provide a visual cue for access to the city center. With the addition of the new underground parking structure / urban park area, both residents and non-residents will have a more inviting path of travel towards the center.
