EDITOR’S MESSAGE

Ganesh Iyer

As I embark on a new venture as EO MEPA’s Comm Chair, knowing I have big shoes to fill following Gopal Jagwani’s 2-year reign, I have to sit and think about the year gone by and the year coming up.

The past term has been filled with some mind-blowing events, even more, notable and thought-provoking speakers, chapter achievements that made us all look on with pride, and member milestones to inspire and motivate.

In the second edition of the TRIBE YEAREND MAGAZINE, we will reminisce on past events, look at all the chapter’s got up to, see out the fabulous 22/23 board, look forward to a new year of possibilities, and welcome the incoming board for 23/24.

I, for one, am excited to be a part of EO and, in particular, EO MEPA, never forgetting the reasons why I joined and the values for which I strive daily:

Trust and Respect

A Thirst for Learning

To Think Big and to Be Bold

Knowing that Together we Grow

CHAPTER MANAGER WORKSHOP IN MALTA

1 - 3 March 2023

Malta

Another amazing Chapter Manager Workshop came to fruition in Malta! This time we had the pleasure of witnessing a vibrant collaboration between two regions: EO Europe and EO MEPA, but not only that, the staff workshop has coincided with the yearly President’s meeting, making it possible for the core team to discuss each chapter teething issues and structure their objectives together as a team.

Unified training allowed both chapter managers and chapter presidents to take on information and learnings from their peers and tackle the 2 major grey areas as the chapter manager role definition and the board accountability. The interactive CM workshop has provided ample opportunities for peer-to-peer best practice sharing. During the chapter manager-driven panel discussions, a selected group of tenured CMs from both regions were able to provide extensive shares on events, membership, finance and time management as well as insides into the various automation processes that are able to provide time-saving tricks to automate repetitive tasks.

TRIBE EO MEPA Year Book FY2022/2023

We also took a sneak peek into a productivity-boosting Excel presentation with Yrene Dimla ( Member Service Centre associate), who whizzed us through chapter statistics and historical trends that help the chapter board make data-driven important decisions.

One of the workshop’s highlights was having Nicola Nel (MEPA Finance Director, EO Cape Town) present to the chapter managers. Her amazingly witty approach, soft and comforting manner, and some real-life-smart advice really elevated the workshop to a new level. Nicola has playfully and effortlessly highlighted a very interesting comparison concept - the EO chapter being like a 15th-century ship, where a chapter manager has the role of an all-knowing navigator, and a chapter president is the captain of the ship. Incredibly useful bullet-pointed takeaways left the whole audience taking phone pictures of the slides ( now that says a LOT).

Chapter Manager in-person workshops play a very important role in providing all the staff with the ability to fine-tune their chapter processes and a much-needed sense of a tight-knit peer-to-peer support community. This was an excellent all-encompassing workshop filled with laughter, lively discussions and unity.

25 - 27 April 2023

Cape Town

From 25-27 April 2023, leaders from around the world convened at EO’s 26th Global Leadership Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. Year after year, men and women from around the world make the choice to raise their hands and courageously take on the challenge of creation and leadership. They rally at the Global Leadership Conference to learn, grow and think bigger than before. The added weight of responsibility does not daunt them; they are emboldened. They choose the road less travelled – the path of greater resistance -because, in so doing, they chart the course for others. This year’s GLC blew everyone away!

EO CAPE TOWN

OUR TENURED DINNER

EO Cape Town curated an exceptional culinary experience at Michelin star Chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s Food Innovation Studio in November. The evening’s intention was to celebrate some of our long standing members who have been members of EO for between nine and 15 years. The value, experience and personal shares they each continue to give back into EO is greatly appreciated; and our goal was for them to know how much their continued support and contribution means to the members of our Cape Town chapter.

WHAT MEMBER’S HAD TO SAY:

“What an incredible initiative. I can’t believe that I have been a member for 10 years. It feels like just yesterday that I joined. As the dinner progressed it was remarkable to see all the amazing EO experiences that these members have had and also all the fantastic experiences I have personally had. I enjoyed seeing the other tenured members and felt truly valued by this experience.” -Dillon

“The EO tenured connection was out of this world, great shares and fantastic event and a real spoil!! Great initiative. I felt the warmth and appreciation. thank you EO Cape Town.”

GG Alcock Tour Of Langa

On the 2nd of February 50 EOers climbed into 8 minibus taxis to head out for an immersive experience in Langa. Upon arrival everyone had an opportunity to visit a local business and home of people working and living in the township. Exploring Langa on foot to get a sense of what life looks like for most Cape Town residents was an eye-opener for many. By 17h00, it was time to meet up at the famous Jordan Ways of Cooking restaurant for a presentation on the informal sector by the white Zulu himself, GG Alcock. GG is best known for his books on Kasinomics – the economy that exists and thrives in the informal sector. After being regaled with insider stories and a new set of statistics that differ vastly from the ones we hear in the media, we enjoyed the delicious food that Jordan had prepared for us.

WHAT MEMBERS HAD TO SAY:

“This was an incredible event. Truly fascinating and an example of the unique value that EO adds to my life, business, and soul. Thank you.” -Ed O’Reilly

“The Informal sector does not equate to poverty. I am my own worst bias. GG was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. I love having my point of view interrupted.”

Steam Train Outing

EO is all about creating once-in-a-lifetime experiences and connections, and Sunday, 26th February, was one of these opportunities, thanks to Engagement Chair Tracy Jones.. EO members and their families had the opportunity to step back in time and take a vintage steam train to Elgin. Families boarded the train near the Waterfront at the Harbour Bridge Platform before the train meandered through Cape Town and its surrounds until the majestic Sir Lowry’s Pass was reached. Arriving at the foot of the pass, the train embarked on an epic climb up one of the steepest railway lines in South Africa towards the lush Elgin Valley before arriving at the Steampunk-inspired Art Deco Elgin Railway Market. Families were treated to breakfast hampers by Dish Social, while mimosas and coffees set the tone for a fabulous Sunday out exploring.

WHAT MEMBERS HAD TO SAY:

“We absolutely loved the steam train trip to the Elgin market. Spending quality time with other EO members and witnessing our kids interact was great. The views were spectacular, and the market was a great experience. All in all a superb day out. Thanks, EO!!” -Julie

“It was a fantastic day out, and we loved the experience! Well thought out and organised!” -Rahul Jain

REGIONAL COUNCIL MESSAGES

We asked a few of our Regional Council to tell us about their achievements this past term and if they are staying on board (in the same or a different role) what they have planned for the new term.

WAHEED ADAM

As the RC of MEPA, our ambition to grow beyond anything seen in previous years meant we had to do things differently in order to achieve a different result, and we are certainly implementing new ways to achieve growth.

Results have been exceptional, and we are proud to state that all is going as planned; we may even beat the increased target set by the RC. To date, we have already achieved the target set by the global board of 177 members.

We are currently on 195 new members( 110% of the global target for MEPA) as of 29 May 2023. 34 are women or 17.4%, and for those under 35 years old 35 or 18%. We and closer than ever to reaching the RC target of 200 new members.

FAIZAN SYED

EO EO Karachi

Regional Chair of EO MEPA 23/24

My name is Faizan Syed, and I’m the incoming Regional Chair for the MEPA Region for the year 2023 to 2024. I founded and run East River, a full-service digital marketing company serving clients globally. My EO journey began in 2012 in EO, Karachi. I served in a number of board roles before becoming Chapter President from 2017-2018. After a gap year, I joined the Regional Council as an expert and worked my way through various RC roles to the incoming Regional Chair. A little bit about the MEPA region. The MEPA region is a huge region that includes the entire Middle East, Africa and Pakistan. We have 20 chapters spread across twelve countries in a landmass that covers 73 countries in total. And for this entire region, we believe we have three priorities that can drive tremendous member value.

Our first priority is GROWTH; as I said, there are 73 countries, and we’re only in twelve. There’s a lot of opportunity, and we hope to capitalize on this opportunity by expanding our EO chapter base across the region and our member numbers within our existing chapters.

Our second priority is MEMBER EXPERIENCE. We want to ensure that we deliver the best possible experience for our members through engagement opportunities, forum opportunities, learning, through regional events. And our focus is to ensure that our member body is the highest engaged, highest retaining member body globally. And finally, our third priority is the PATH OF LEADERSHIP. We want to ensure that members jump on the path of leadership right at the get-go as a moderator for their forums, move on to their chapter boards, move on to the Regional Council, and eventually represent our MEPA Region globally in the committees and in the Global Board MEPA offers cultural diversity, geographic diversity, climate diversity in a way that no other region offers, the language diversity, the religious diversity in a way no other region offers. And I think that with an engaged community, this is something we could truly achieve.

I look forward to meeting each of you over the coming year at our regional events and through EO, helping you achieve your full potential as an entrepreneur.

OUR TOP 3 EVENTS

1. Learning Event | EO Talks | 30th October 2022

EO Lahore launched its first-ever “EO Talks” series – a concept inspired by TED Talks. This series aims to provide members a platform for sharing their inspiring entrepreneurial, personal and professional experiences and empowering them with more tools to reach new heights of success. Many members from across the globe appreciated the unique idea and showed interest in curating their motivational and inspirational stories.

TRIBE EO MEPA Year Book FY2022/2023

The following six intellectual members were professionally trained by a renowned professor at a top-ranked university, who assisted them in curating their unique motivational and inspirational stories.

Kamal Amjad Mian shared his life’s inspirational journey and showed how to live a purposeful life and motivated the audience to follow their passion, break the mould and take risks. His story exemplified the importance of an environment that allows and nurtures alignment with personal values and passion. Shahid Hassan Warriach presented two behavioural tools that can be used to influence decision-making intensely, impacting willpower and performance. He shared transformational strategies for managing procrastination and initiating and implementing change. Khawaja Muhammad Anees started by asking, “How do we, as entrepreneurs keep Pakistan first and contribute in a meaningful manner?” His definition of this ‘meaningful’ contribution was one that has rarely been considered, and he linked it to the development of a visionary attitude.

SM Imran introduced the audience to an impactful leadership strategy that makes every leader an efficient and energising force. He visualised the power of influence by demonstrating a simple tool that is commonly looked at as a negative trait. This so-called negative trait is the key to developing an analytical mindset that is crucial for an effective leader. Dr. Omar Chughtai addressed an issue that we, as a society, avoid talking about, yet we all face it in one form or the other. He challenged the existing viewpoints about grief and guided the audience to understand what sorrow in everyday life is, to learn to view pain as an opportunity to grow and to apply concrete strategies to manage grief and transform negatives into positives. Gohar Iqbal passionately discussed understanding the purpose of life and finding meaning through his personal and entrepreneurial voyage. He took the audience through his life obstacles and displayed how the one thing that kept him going was persistence.

Our local partner in Kampala is serial entrepreneur Stephan Duyck, and he is excited about the potential of young jackfruit as a substitute for meat. We genuinely appreciate his opinion since Stephan is a longtime expert in the African food and hospitality industry. We hope the street food sausage will start more developments for the African market. Together we can raise awareness
