Sinova, the new sans serif typeface In 2008, Christian Mengelt, the Swiss typeface designer and cofounder of the Basel Team’77, began with the first sketches for the development of the Sinova typeface family. The starting point for this was ‘Signa’, a linear serif typeface, which had been designed 30 years previously by Team‘77 for Bobst Graphic, Lausanne. The first idea was to redesign the ‘Signa’, but deeper form studies subsequently led to a largely new typeface design, the Sinova font family. The aim of the new typeface design was on the one hand, to preserve the characteristics and form quality of the old ‘Signa’ with its clear structure of form and its dynamically modulated ductus, and on the other hand, to include these characteristics in a new sans serif typeface with an independent character, which would be appropriate for today‘s typography and digital typesetting technology. In addition, particularly important were the requirements of good readability, even at small font sizes, and at low resolution (dpi) on the screen and in office printing. The Sinova font family includes 10 fonts with five finely graded weights of Sinova Thin, Sinova Light, Sinova Regular, Sinova Medium, and Sinova Bold. These fonts are complemented by respective oblique (Italic) variants. The clear functional form character of Sinova in conjunction with the dynamic letter rhythm, produces a lively, well-balanced overall image quality in the type setting, outstanding readability, and original typographic appearance. The Sinova font family is thus highly suitable for use both as an elegant, refined book typeface, as well as a text font for digital office printing. In addition, Sinova harmonizes with different Antiqua (Old Face) typefaces, when used either as a title or a text typeface. Moreover, the classically spaced capital letters and the dynamic flow of the Sinova Italic variants should also be highlighted. Following close cooperation between the type designer and Linotype, the final design of the Sinova font family attained the technical quality required for a modern sans serif typeface intended for a broad range of applications, and meeting the complex typographic requirements of digital print media. Font: Sinova Regular, 14pt, extended spacing as screen-face.
