GOLF has a term for when you’re up 2 holes with one to play and can’t lose: Dormie. Golf now also has a term for traveling golfers who can’t lose when they want to play a variety of great courses, entertain for business, and be treated to the highest-quality service in a private-club environment: It’s called Dormie Network. National Dormie Network membership grants golfers and their guests unlimited access to a growing group of award-winning courses around the country. Just as important as the golf are the luxurious facilities to be found at each club, including cottage and villa-type accommodations, gourmet culinary experiences, and conference rooms. Making it all happen is an expert concierge team that sees to every aspect of the member’s personal or business-related visit. “Golfers who travel for business or pleasure are paying multiple dues to belong to multiple courses,” explains Dormie Network President Zach Peed. “We tie that all together into a single national membership. You don’t have to be a homeowner or pay individual club dues to entertain friends, family, or clients at different clubs. Dormie Network provides guaranteed access to a high-end, pure golf experience.”

The six clubs currently in Dormie Network are: DORMIE CLUB Pinehurst, N.C. Located in Pinehurst, the “mecca of American golf,” the Dormie Club boasts a Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw-designed course ranked No. 12 in the state. Inspired by the Scottish Highlands, the course features 110-foot elevation changes, three natural lakes, and classic design touches such as a 241-yard “reverse Redan” par three. A new clubhouse and cottages will open by early 2021. ■ ARBORLINKS Nebraska City, Neb. The No. 9-ranked course in Nebraska is an Arnold Palmer Signature design that backs up its name with strategic, links-like bunkering and fescue-thick surrounds. Other amenities at this family-friendly retreat include a full-service restaurant and all-new on-site lodging. ■ BALLYHACK GOLF CLUB Roanoke, Va. Nestled along the eastern slope of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, the Lester George-designed course is rated No. 6 in Virginia for its wide fairways, old-style blow-out bunkering, and ample elevation changes. The clubhouse dining room features farm-fresh menus, while the lodging updates old-world hospitality with state-of-the-art amenities. ■

JOINING DORMIE NETWORK PROVIDES UNLIMITED ACCESS TO GREAT GOLF AND LUXURIOUS CLUBS AROUND THE COUNTRY BRIGGS RANCH GOLF CLUB San Antonio, Texas. A prime example of Tom Fazio’s trademark blend

of challenge and charm, the No. 11 course in Texas is a beauty with a little bit of shotmaking beastliness. A secluded escape from nearby San Antonio, there’s already a full-service clubhouse with restaurant, with on-site cottages and a high-end practice facility opening this spring. ■ HIDDEN CREEK GOLF CLUB Egg Harbor Township, N.J. This Coore/Crenshaw design—host to numerous USGA qualifying events—sprawls over 750 acres of old woodlands in southern New Jersey just 20 minutes from Atlantic City. The fully equipped clubhouse offers casual and fine dining, while the Lodge at Hidden Creek has eight lavishly appointed bedrooms and two “great rooms.” ■ VICTORIA NATIONAL Newburgh, Ind. Ranked among the 50 top courses in America, this Tom Fazio design makes expert use of dramatic, reclaimed coal land in southern Indiana, its holes carved through mining corridors, thick trees, and finger-like lagoons. Easily reachable from Louisville, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Nashville, the club has a clubhouse, restaurants, and on-site cottages. These six clubs are only the beginning, with Dormie

Network actively looking to add more properties in more diverse locations. Anticipating more than 10 clubs in the next few years, Peed and his team want to add a few more warm-weather locations near major markets. But no matter where the network expands, the emphasis will remain on luxurious privacy, perfect for an intimate corporate retreat or all-inclusive buddy trip certain to create a lifetime of memories. National membership dues are presently under $4,000. For that, members get unlimited golf at all Dormie Network clubs with no green fees, cart fees, food minimums, or other costs. Peed does suggest members book overnight accommodations in advance, as visits are limited by the number of beds: “We won’t be building too many rooms,” he explains, “so golfers staying in the cottages can pretty much expect to be the only ones on the course that day.” World-class golf, luxurious amenities, delicious dining, and a commitment to service. Golfer, traveler, for business or pleasure. Dormie Network. You can’t lose. For more information on national or corporate Dormie Network memberships, please contact Ashley Owen at ao@dormienetwork.com or 812.758.7439.

HIT LIST

eading Geoff Ogilvy’s description in last month’s issue of Royal Melbourne, where he grew up, reinforced that those are the best courses in the world I really want to play. In this issue, we had Adam Schupak ask a number of noted golf personalities for their so far unplayed great layouts, and their responses—from the likes of Greg Norman, Jim Nantz, and Dottie Pepper—are fascinating in their diversity. By the way, among the others on my list are Tara Iti, Sand Hills, and Chicago Golf Club, if anyone out there wants to help make that happen. Another respondent to the “best course never played” question was Gil Hanse, who gave an interesting insight into how architects think. For further understanding of how he does his job, read Gil’s “Architecture 101” column this issue. He discusses laying out the design, which begins with walking a site over and over and over, analyzing the land beneath his feet, then debating where to place each hole. I think you’ll find it especially compelling to read the two pieces side-by-side, seeing how big a factor understanding the site is in creating a truly outstanding golf course. If the courses in Pinehurst are on your personal hit list—or if you haven’t been to the Carolina sand hills in a few years—check out our feature on the area. After a decade of renovation and improvement, many of the courses in that area are better than ever, having gone “back to the future” with restorations that get them playing more the way Donald Ross and other early architects designed them. The latest of these redos was Hanse’s work on Pinehurst No. 4, which is now a wonderful complement to the classic No. 2 course and a highly recommended “must play.” Pinehurst was also the subject of a recent LINKS Golf Podcast episode, and if I do say so myself, if you’re not listening to these, you’re missing out. So far, they’ve traveled to Scotland, England, and Bandon Dunes, while tackling the golf-travel questions you were otherwise embarrassed to ask. You can find the podcast through Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or anywhere else you get your podcasts. You can also listen at linksmagazine.com/links-golf-podcast. I promise that along with making your golf travel easier, you’re sure to add a few more great courses to your bucket list.

You don’t dare use the “T” word here. Typical just isn’t part of the language. Instead of cab rides and daily car commutes, it’s a ferry ride between islands. Thirty minutes of decompression, to relax and catch your breath through the Atlantic breeze. Instead of the stress of grocery shopping, it’s the Haig Point valet service, a crew that loads your bags from the store onto the ferry and delivers them to your doorstep. And shopping means hopping into a water taxi to Harbour Town on Hilton Head, seen just above the horizon, or a 45-minute ferry ride to glorious Savannah, Georgia.

For this stalwart sentinel at one of golf’s bastions, life isn’t bad…on the hole

R

ecently I had the rare opportunity to spend some time with one of the most iconic figures in golf—the flagstick at the 18th hole of the Augusta National Golf Club. With the Masters approaching, and at a decidedly turbulent time in the life of all flagsticks, he was extremely gracious with his time and remarkably revealing with his views on a variety of issues.

GP: This is such a pleasure. Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me. F: The pleasure’s all mine—I can’t remember the last time anyone wanted to chat with me. GP: Well, let’s start by learning a bit more about you. Flagstick—that’s an Anglo-Saxon name, isn’t it? F: Well yes, but my family is actually of Eastern European descent—originally we were all Poles. GP: Oh, of course. But eventually you found your way to the UK… F: Yes, my direct ancestors were of sturdy Scottish timber, real Bravehart types. Oh the stories my great-grandfather told about his 16-hour workdays, often in the worst weather. The heavy winds eventually forced him into early retirement. 18 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

Peper_S19.indd 18

GP: I’m sorry if this next question is a bit, uh, delicate. Are you male or female? F: Are you really that naïve? Think about it, my friend—the logistics. I’m male. All flagsticks are male, and happily married to their cups! GP: Right, of course. Let’s get to your job, working the 18th hole at the Augusta National Golf Club, arguably the most famous course in the world. How does that feel? F: Well, naturally it’s a great honor. I was very fortunate to have been born and raised near here. It’s a wonderful place to work. The members are all gentlemen, and the best part is that they close down the course in May—I get the whole summer off, just like a schoolteacher. GP: I’m assuming there’s some sort of hierarchy among the pins… F: Don’t call me a pin. Pins are for bowling. It’s flagstick or stick. GP: My bad, sorry. Did you have to work your way up to become the 18th hole flagstick? F: Yes, there is a strict pecking order here, as you’d imagine, and I am indeed senior stick, but it’s not a straight 1–18 thing. George Peper 5th hole, mostly because it’s isolated on a hill at the far end of the course. Also, it’s a tough hole, so by the time most players hike up there and putt out they’re in a sour mood. Most of the sticks like working Amen Corner, especially on hot days, because it’s generally shady and there’s always a nice breeze down there, but the second most prestigious hole is 16. It’s such an idyllic setting, plus you see some very entertaining shots, including the occasional hole-in-one. And of course, during Masters week you get a lot of close-ups. I worked there for several years before coming here. In fact, remember the famous Tiger pitch shot in 2005? GP: The one where the ball sat on the edge of the cup for a few seconds and then toppled in…wow, that was you? F: Yep, that was my 15 minutes of fame. It was particularly sweet because 30 years earlier my Dad was working that hole when Jack Nicklaus sank a dramatic 40-footer en route to victory in his fifth Masters. GP: Speaking of attention, thanks to the new Rules change you must be getting more of that than ever. F: Yes, and it’s the best of both worlds—more people are looking at me and fewer are touching me! It’s not perfect, mind you. Occasionally, some yahoo overhits a putt that slams me in the shins. But I’m not getting manhandled the way I was all my life. Heck, some days I’ll stand there watching several groups pass through before anyone lays a hand on me, and that’s usually an arthritic member whose grip I can barely feel. What a change after being constantly picked up and put down, passed from caddie to caddie, and occasionally dropped on the ground. Would you like that? I HATE being dropped. Now, everyone’s just looking at me—and I mean really looking at me for the first time. It’s wonderful. GP: Yeah, back in the old days, I guess it was much tougher being a flagstick. F: Ohmygod, it was so crazy. Did you know that back in 1952 the Rule was that a stick had to be removed for any shot within 20 yards of the hole, otherwise the player got a two-stroke penalty? GP: No way…even for bunker shots? F: For any shot. My grandfather worked the 13th here for years and he loved regaling us with tales of guys who holed shots from the tributary of Rae’s Creek—out of the water and into the cup—but because no one had removed grampa from the hole, the player got tagged two strokes. GP: Weird… F: Tell me about it. Then for the last 50 years until this year we had that ridiculous rule where you had to take me out for every putt or the penalty was two strokes— 20 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

Peper_S19.indd 20

what a crazy half century of baton ballet that produced, and such a waste of time! Thank heavens, it’s over. GP: I think you’re being a little self-serving there, but I must say I agree with you. Now, let’s get to your big upcoming week, the Masters. Are you excited? F: Of course, but honestly, Masters Week is a mixed blessing. Again, I love the attention but I think my 17 colleagues would agree, we get hit—and hit hard—with golf balls more often on Masters Week than any week of the year. It’s always been that way. My grandfather dreaded the approach of Ben Hogan, and my dad cringed anytime Johnny Miller stared at him with an iron in hand. GP: What has been your own worst moment? F: April 11, 2011. Luke Donald. In contention on Sunday, he hit me twice in succession, the first with a shot from the fairway that caught me flush in the midsection. I think he was actually aiming at my groin, but I managed to hip-check him back down the fairway. What does the limey slime do but hit me again, holing his pitch shot! The crowd loved it. Yours truly, not so much. I ached for days. GP: Is there a Masters hole location on your green that you look forward to every year? F: Yes, back right. For one thing, the players tend not to gun for me there, lest they overshoot the green. But the main reason is that I’m closer to the edge of the green and can eavesdrop on the gallery. GP: Really… F: Yes, I’m afraid I’m something of a busybody. That’s the only thing I miss about the days when the caddies held me at the side of green. I loved listening in on their salty critiques of the players. These days, I’m relegated to watching and listening mostly to the spectators, and sadly the Masters patrons are way too genteel for me. GP: So, who are your favorite players? F: Bryson DeChambeau and Adam Scott, for obvious reasons. I so hope one of them wins this year. You know, I’ve never been on camera at the moment the victorous putt dropped. GP: Is there anything you’re not looking forward to? F: Yes, the Champion’s caddie on Sunday night. In the past, caddies have tried to take my flag away as a souvenir. Humans just don’t understand, the flag is our hair—when it wafts in the breeze it attracts attention to us and we feel good and proud, and that’s especially true for the bright yellow Masters flag. When it’s ripped away from us, it’s like a public scalping—suddenly we’re bald, cold, an object of ridicule. At moments like that I wish I worked at Merion. SPRING 2019

Dumbarnie Links It doesn’t happen often, so when a truly world-class links course opens in Scotland we sit up and take notice by MALCOLM CAMPBELL

A

brand-new, genuinely world-class links golf course is about as rare a happening today as a smile on the face of an impecunious Scotsman. But such a links is now well on the way, just 12 miles from the cradle of the game itself in St. Andrews. Genuine linksland, the prerequisite for any true links course, is golf’s holy grail. There is very, very little of it still available for course development and without it no course can legitimately join that elite group of “true links” numbering fewer than 250 in the world’s inventory of more than 30,000 golf courses. But Dumbarnie Links, a $15 million layout on a secluded 345-acre site along Largo Bay on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, has it in abundance. California-based architect Clive Clark—a former Ryder Cup player, BBC TV golf announcer, and designer of 35 courses worldwide—has crafted this stunning layout on the sand-based terrain of the Balcarres Estate near the village of Lower Largo, famed “birthplace” of Robinson Crusoe. It’s an historic site belonging to one of the oldest Earldoms in Scotland and discussions on the development of a course have been ongoing for almost 20 years, with environmentally sensitive treatment the highest priority. Now growing in and scheduled to open in Spring 2020, Dumbarnie Links will be a pure pay-and-play, high-end, walking course with a top-class caddie program, in the mold of nearby Kingsbarns. The site unfurls on two levels along an escarpment, allowing panoramic views across the Firth of Forth to North Berwick and Muirfield. Thirteen of the holes play toward the sea. The fairways are generous and although the back tees can be stretched to well over 7,000 yards, Dumbarnie Links will feature four drivable par fours. “We want everyone, at whatever level, to enjoy this very special place and leave with happy memories,” says Clark of a course that looks certain to move quickly into the world’s Top 100. 22 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

It is Raynor’s take on the Redan hole, the original being the 15th at North Berwick in Scotland, but this Redan has about as much resemblance to that one as Bobby Jones to Bridget Jones. First, it’s a reverse Redan, meaning the angled green slopes from front left to back right rather than right to left as in the original. Second, it is far more severe, both in the pitch of the green and the depth of the flanking bunkers. How severe? Sam Snead once ping-ponged his way to a 13 here. When the U.S. Women’s Open is played here, May 30June 3, don’t be surprised if a few players decide to lay up on this little hole, pitching their tee shots to a patch of fairway below the green and hoping for a one-putt par. Canny competitors have been doing exactly that for decades in the Azalea Invitational, a prestigious amateur event the club has hosted since 1946. But the 11th hole is just the most salient moment in a journey full of interest and challenge. Raynor made the most of the undistinguished terrain with a routing that twists and turns constantly through corridors framed by enormous moss-draped oaks. Only once do two consecutive holes play in the same direction. Sweeping views across the intracoastal waterway are frequent, and there is at least one other “wow” moment, the approach to the parfour 16th, where the massive punchbowl green wraps like a neck pillow around a menacing front bunker known as the Lion’s Mouth. Indeed it is the greens that give this course both its character and teeth. Huge, billowing, and fiercely fast—routinely putting in the 12–13 range on the Stimpmeter—they are Raynor at his finest. Masters Champion Henry Picard was the head pro here, Hall of Famer Beth Daniel is a longtime member, and fellow member Russell Henley credits his experience with this course for his first PGA Tour title, the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii, played at Waialae, another Seth Raynor design—but with a much milder version of the Redan.

USGA/JOHN MUMMERT

R

are are the moments, while playing a golf course for the first time, that you round a corner or reach the brow of a hill suddenly to come face to face with a shotmaking assignment so visually arresting that you stop dead in your tracks, speechless except perhaps for a murmured “wow.” Examples that come quickly to mind are the 16th at Cypress Point, the 7th at Pebble Beach, and the second shot to the 8th at Pebble. All of them, of course, owe 99 percent of their shock and awesomeness to the pulchritude of Mother Nature. Rarer still are such moments when brought to you entirely by the golf architect. Such a moment occurs at the 11th tee of the Country Club of Charleston. This is the work of Seth Raynor, the Princeton-educated engineer who learned at the knee of C.B. Macdonald and then followed his mentor’s blueprint, incorporating replicas of several “template” holes from the great British links to create some of America’s most highly regarded courses. The only rap on Raynor is that he lacked originality— simply copying Macdonald’s copies—but the truth is he often outdid Macdonald, pushing the envelope to dramatic effect, as at this 177-yard par three. Remarkably, it rears up in the middle of a course set on pancake-flat terrain. This is the Lowcountry, after all, and comparatively little earthmoving went on in 1925. The previous hole plays beside marshland and the last seven holes don’t rise or fall more than your back stoop. But as you step to the tee of 11 you don’t see any of those holes, all you see is the most forbidding green imaginable, its enormous false front swooping from ground level to rooftop-height like the launch ramp of a ski jump. Protecting the front-right is a bunker that’s 12 feet deep while one of similar size lurks beyond.

and essentially heathland in character. Silver birch trees defi ne many of the fairways while smatterings of gorse and a dash of heather provide seasonal splashes of color and create a very attractive setting. Throw in the quality of the design and it’s little wonder that Lindrick is widely considered to be one of England’s top 10 inland courses. Carefully placed drives are routinely rewarded here, but it is the variety of second shots to the traditionally fi rm and fast greens that is the course’s hallmark. The par fours are particularly strong, and one could single out the 2nd, 8th, and 17th as perhaps the most beguiling and cleverly designed holes, with the 7th, 12th, and 13th among the more demanding. Many commentators, however, regard the par-five 4th as the most interesting hole: A left-to-right dogleg, it requires a blind approach to a sunken green that is impressively framed by trees and has the River Ryton wrapping around the back of the putting surface. The green is stage-like in appearance, and it was here that the boundaries of the three counties once converged. Long ago this stage was used for bare-fist fighting, contestants and spectators being able to avoid arrest by stepping swiftly into a neighboring county whenever unfriendly law authorities appeared on the scene. Lindrick’s clubhouse provides a good view of the parthree closing hole. Many dramatic occasions must have been witnessed here over the years, although it’s unlikely any will have surpassed that monumental moment in 1957 when the Great Britain & Ireland team captained by Dai Rees created history—and in the process brought a big smile to the face of the seasoned campaigner.

KEVIN MURRAY

T

here are two golf clubs in England that will be forever linked with the Ryder Cup: One is The Belfry, the other is Lindrick, and they couldn’t be more different. The Belfry (or more precisely its Brabazon Course) was “purposely built” in the 1970s to host important tournaments. In human terms, it is a big strapping youth, still a little immature and brash in the opinion of critics, but heroic and dashing in the eyes of supporters. By contrast, Lindrick is the seasoned campaigner. The club was founded in 1891 and its golf course, which began with nine holes by Old Tom Morris, has evolved over the years as the game itself has evolved. Lindrick is no giant— indeed, by modern championship course standards its length (6,665 yards, par 70) is quite modest—yet there is no shortage of challenge or charm. Moreover, here is a place where subtlety reigns supreme. Before the Ryder Cup came to Lindrick in 1957, only a relatively small number of golf aficionados were aware of how fine a course it was. But by the end of a chilly, windswept week in October, no one present, and none among those closely following events, would ever need reminding. This was the last occasion when an exclusively British and Irish team would emerge victorious, and it was not until 1985 at The Belfry, against a now European Team, that the U.S. would suffer another defeat. Lindrick is located close to the borders of three ancient counties: Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, and Derbyshire, in the middle of England, occupying some 200 acres of classic English common (Lindrick Common)

Teasing a golf course out of the land begins with a lot of walking by GIL HANSE

32 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

I

n this age of GPS and satellite navigation, we seldom set out on a journey in our car not knowing our final destination or how we are going to get there. That is not the case for the golf course architect setting out to route a golf course. While the goal is always the same—to build the best course possible on that unique piece of land—the destination is not clear, nor is the path over the land that will hold the golf course easily defined or clearly marked. So many variables go into the search for the best 18 holes that a property can yield. The angle of the sun, the prevailing wind, the best topography, oddly shaped boundaries, where to locate the clubhouse, dramatic natural features, development requirements… these are only a few of the pieces of the great puzzle that we call routing a golf course, and we haven’t even started talking about golf holes, which will be saved for another chapter. Once the land is selected, my partner Jim Wagner and I start walking the property with a topographic map in hand. I would love to think that in some other life we would be Lewis and Clark creating the maps through exploration. However, even though our

field instincts are good, we would be lost without a topo map showing the contours of the land as they exist, and, if available, done at a contour interval indicating every two feet of elevation change. This level of specificity shows us enough of the small ripples and rolls that will form the character of the holes, while also highlighting the more dramatic contours that will become home to greens, tees, and bunkers. With the map in hand, we “catalog” the site, making notes of interesting features. Great green site, beautiful tree, nice stone wall, sandy ground with great vegetation—those are some of the notes scribbled on these maps. These early plans take on a wonderful patina with dirt, sunscreen, splotches from rain and sweat fighting with the red ink scribbles. With the ever-present smartphone in hand, we also take photos of these characteristics to help jog the memory when we are back at the drawing board and out of the elements. These wanders around the property can take days and 34 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

Arch101_S19.indd 34

even weeks as we seek to become as intimately familiar with the site as we can be before deciding what we think is the best arrangement of 18 holes on the property. One of the variables as to how long these treks can take is whether or not the site has a healthy snake population: It is much easier to walk a property efficiently when not constantly looking down to see where each step might take you. Finding the path is my favorite part of the process of designing a golf course: the possibilities are endless, the options are many. It is a time when we can be out on site, alone with the elements and the land, trying to unlock its potential, observe its secrets. It is quiet, no machinery, no interruptions, the canvas is spread out before us, no road map, just our intuitions, beliefs, and hopes that we can do it justice with our design. As close to Nirvana as we get before the realities, requirements, and regulations of our game, our environment, and sometimes our client find their way into our path.

Questions Ever miss a deadline? Never in my life. I always felt like I’d been watching this theater for four days and now I’m on stage and it’s my turn to perform. I always thought it could’ve been better, but I had to get it in. I can count on one hand the times I really nailed it. I wish I could’ve had a little more time.

targets. I don’t. Tiger did a good job of it. Greg Norman, he was a great target. He was so arrogant and besides that a choking dog who should’ve won eight or nine majors and pissed away some of them. Other targets? Lurkers. You spend five days in the rain at Augusta, it carries over into Monday, and you get Tommy F-ing Aaron.

How much do you still write today? I just finished a novel, which will come out in late summer. Other than that, I still toil and tweet for Golf Digest. I don’t believe in retirement.

It’s lunchtime at the Masters. Who’s sitting at your table? My media buddies: Bob Drum. Furman Bisher. Ed Pope. Blackie Sherrod. Dave Kindred. Guys like that. Jack Whitaker. Dave Marr. Jim Murray would be at the table. Frank Chirkinian. It would be upstairs in the clubhouse. I used to like the breakfast up there. Country ham, biscuits and gravy.

In what medium do you think your writing talent is best appreciated/ works best—book form, magazine, digital, tweet? Books, I hope. More often, though, I hea r about something I wrote during my Sports Illustrated life. What do you read these days? War histories, whodunits, newspapers, magazine stuff. What do you think of the state of golf journalism today? W hat golf journalism? Doug Ferguson, you mean? 36 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

His record run of Masters attended (68 in a row from 1951–2018 ) has come to an end, but Texas’s gift to golf writing is still going strong, as are his opinions on everything by ADAM SCHUPAK

Besides Tiger, what player would you pay to watch? I’d actually buy a ticket to watch Hogan, Byron, and Snead again. Who are the five smartest pro golfers you’ve observed covering the game? I never judged a pro on his intellect. But if you want to talk about humor, then Dave Marr, Jimmy Demaret, Jackie Burke, Lee Trevino, Tommy Bolt, Ed Sneed. Jack Nicklaus is

hands down the pro I most like to talk to about golf or other subjects.

Who was/is the most underrated player in the game? Gary Player. He won nine majors and nobody knows it. What makes you crankiest? Sloppy editors. Who was your favorite target to go after and why? Targets make themselves

Do you still support Trump? I did from the start and still do. I am not now, nor have I ever been, a socialist or globalist or especially borderless. Let’s have your quick picks. Woods or Nicklaus? Nicklaus Nelson or Snead? Byron Woods or Mickelson (as a person)? Mickelson Open or U.S. Open? U.S. Open Rory or Spieth? Spieth (I’m still a Texan) Fade or draw? Draw Blade or mallet? Blade Driving or putting? Putting Scotland or Ireland? Scotland Senior Tour or LPGA? LPGA

Are you going to the Masters this year, to make it 69 in a row? Do you have a number you want to hit? 70? 75? No, I’m finally missing the Masters. No more travel, my doctors say. So the streak ends at 68 straight. Still a world record, I do believe.

The concept is a throwback to the simple origins of golf, like the Old Course at St. Andrews that was originally played in two directions. And like courses built in the early years, Doak moved very little earth for The Loop’s construction. hat didn’t take long. Mammoth Dunes, an 18hole design by David McLay Kidd, opened at Sand Valley Golf Resort last May and was hailed by Golf Magazine as the “Best New Course of 2018.” But that’s not all. Sand Valley also debuted The Sandbox, a 17hole short course by Bill Coore, Ben Crenshaw, and Jimmy Craig. That course garnered honors for “Best New Short Course of 2018.” These two honors come just a year after the re ort’ r t our e and a ey a na ed e t e Course 2017” by Golf Magazine. “There’s no ambiguity about our best new course of the year: Sand Valley’s Mammoth Dunes in Wisconsin,” reports Golf Magazine. “No design in memory so successfully melds strategy, playability, and spectacular aesthetics. It’s tons of fun too.” The Sandbox packs plenty of fun, as well. Located 50 yards from the Clubhouse and just outside the Dunes Lodge, The Sandbox plays through a restored sand prairie that sits within the same V-shaped sand ridge that frames Mammoth Dunes. With holes ranging from 40 to 140 yards, the short course features the most unique green complexes on the property, including a biarritz, double plateau, lion’s mouth, and a redan. and a ey the re ort’ r t our e de igned by oore Crenshaw, is situated on more than 1,700 acres of tumbling, prehistoric sand dunes in Central Wisconsin. The public-play course brought the drama and playing style of a seaside links course to the heartland of America and was reason enough to make the pilgrimage to Central Wisconsin. It comes as no surprise that Sand Valley Golf Resort is

the brainstorm of the Keiser family, who brought us great de tination go at andon une on the a i and abot Links on the Atlantic. This latest resort appears destined to join those two as another to put on your bucket list. But there’s more to Sand Valley than just great golf. In addition to a new practice facility that includes a short game area the re ort offer gra tenni ourt hing and hiking and biking trails. Given the somewhat remote location, 250 miles or so northwest of Chicago, the opening of new lodging options is especially appealing. The rooms were designed, inside and out, to exceed the expectations of the traveling golfer, including views that help you reconnect with the raw beauty and serenity of the outdoors.

For those in search of the full golf experience, the Nicklaus Signature Course offers 18 holes, no two alike, but all with dazzling views of the Rockies. The course features over 700 feet of elevation change and bentgrass playing surfaces. You’ll also find a full schedule of Club socials and recreational activities for all ages—a testament to their authentic, familyfriendly orientation. Its world-renowned amenities also include a Jim McLean Golf School, Cliff Drysdale Tennis School, and Swim & Fitness Club. On-site winter activities include dog sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. ard to believe, but it’s been 20 years since Bandon Dunes Golf Resort was introduced to the golfing public. All those years ago, Mike Keiser set out to find a property on which he could build a golf course true to the spirit of Scotland’s ancient links. Two decades, numerous accolades, and five courses later, the golf resort tops the bucket list of golfers from around the world. Rugged, wind-swept, and set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, it is hard to imagine another stretch of oceanfront land that comes close to the breathtaking beauty and inspired layouts of Bandon Dunes. Having hosted five USGA championships so far, and with two more on the horizon including this year’s U.S. Amateur Four Ball, Bandon Dunes has quickly become a storied national championship venue where the world’s top amateurs come in search of making history. The 2019 U.S. Amateur Four Ball will be contested on Old Macdonald and Pacific Dunes. Next year, Bandon Dunes will join an exclusive club in hosting the 2020 United States Amateur, the oldest championship in the nation. The prestigious championship will challenge the

top amateur golfers in the world on Bandon Trails and Bandon Dunes. There may be no better place for a true bonding experience or to reward a junior golfer for the hard work they have put in, than a trip to Bandon Dunes. The Junior Bandonistas program was created to forge memories that will last a lifetime. From Mother’s Day Weekend through July 31, a parent can treat their young golfer, 22 years of age and younger, to a free round on any of Bandon Dunes’s golf courses after 10 a.m., as long as that parent is playing along with the Junior Bandonista. A great part of the allure of Bandon Dunes is its relative seclusion, but there are plenty of great options for getting there. Daily non-stop flights from Denver and San Francisco to Southwest Oregon Regional Airport (OTH) get you within a 35-minute drive to the resort. If you don’t mind a longer drive from the airport, there are multiple flight options to Eugene, Medford, and Portland, Oregon. MAYACAMA orn into a golf family in the shadow of Augusta National, where he manned the 11th scoreboard at the Masters during his high school years, it is only natural that Ted Antonopoulos has a love for the traditions of the game. That penchant plays out today as he serves as head golf professional at Mayacama Golf Club. It’s a position he has held since 2001, the year the course opened. Nestled in the hills of northern Sonoma County, Mayacama is a private golf and residential community centered around a grand clubhouse and a championship, walking-only Jack Nicklaus signature course ranked among the top 100 in America. In charge of the golf here from the very start, Antonopoulos has created a rare and remarkable golf experience for its members. “The ability to come to a new club and establish a culture centered around the traditions of the game was very attractive,” says Antonopoulos. “We are more of a golf club, than a country club. The primary focus is golf and the member experience.” That focus is played out in numerous ways at Mayacama, where the course is always in tournament condition and caddies are always at the ready. But it plays out most notably in the tournament program that Antonopoulos has created. “Our aim is to make

B

MAYACAMA PW-10 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

members feel like they are playing in the Masters or The Open when they are playing in our tournaments,” he says. From the jacket-andtie announcer on the first tee to the award ceremony at the end, tournaments are conducted in the grandest traditions of the game. At a club that boasts an extraordinary wine program, including 35 renowned vintners, Mayacama offers one of the most treasured tee prizes in golf. Some tournaments here are run like a Pro-Am, with each group drawing a vintner as their fourth. The prize for The Vintner’s Cup is a magnum of that vintner’s wine. Antonopoulos feels fortunate about many things: a great professional staff, his appointment to the PGA of America Rules Committee, and his return to Augusta this spring to work as a rules official at the Masters. He also prizes the trips to the UK he takes with members so they can play some of the great venues, as well as off-the-beaten-path gems. “I enjoy showing them the rugged, more natural conditions of links courses,” he says. The courses are a nice counterpoint to the meticulously groomed fairways at Mayacama, to which members are always delighted to return.

And, of course, some choose the scenic automobile route. “I don’t know of another club in Texas, perhaps the country, with these three unique ways to access the club; all within 10 minutes of the front door,” says Escondido Director of Golf Brandon Dixon. Whatever method of transport, the real thrills come upon arrival at the exclusive, gated Club on the lake. Opened in 2006, Escondido features an award-winning par 71 Tom Fazio Golf Course along with a gorgeous Tuscan-style clubhouse. You’ll also find four large modern guest houses on property offering four master bedrooms, each with their own en suite bath, flat screen TVs in every room, a fully stocked kitchen, common living area, covered back porch leading to a putting green, and two fire pits overlooking Pecan Creek and the scenic Club grounds. For golfers, the biggest thrills are found on the course, which plays at 7,165 yards from the back tees, but can be played from a variety of tee locations. Much of the year the course, which winds gracefully through the community, is covered with wildflowers, dozens of hardwoods, and families of deer, along with plenty of natural and spring-fed creeks. Golfers get to graze, too, at the impressively stocked comfort stations, including the halfway house which serves up their famous brisket tacos. Escondido is also home to the acclaimed Dave Pelz Short Game School. So get your boat, plane, or car ready. INDIANA UNIVERSITY COURSE Bloomington, Ind. After the school decided to build a new hospital on part of its existing golf course, Steve Smyers was brought in to create a new one on the site of a previous layout from the 1950s with additional land from the cross country facility. “The client allowed us the flexibility to utilize the site where we created a journey that traversed the different environments and unique topography in a manner to develop 18 individual, different, and unique golf holes,” Smyers told Golf Course Architecture. Sustainability was also a goal, with just under half of the site consisting of native grasses that don’t require any irrigation. The course is set to open summer 2019. 38 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

HOIANA SHORES Hoi An, Vietnam Located just south of Hoi An—a UNESCO World Heritage site—Hoiana Shores is a resort-based Robert Trent Jones II design that hugs the East Vietnam Sea and should play like a links over sandy terrain. Despite the warm, tropical climate, firm and fast conditions will be achieved by using Zeon zoysia grass. The course will also have no rough. Explains RTJ II, “On sand, in the resort setting, where water needs to be conserved, we think it makes sense not to be constrained by tree lines and rough lines. Hit it, find it, hit it again.” A soft opening is scheduled for summer 2019 with a grand opening in the fall.

TEXAS RANGERS GOLF CLUB Arlington, Texas This municipal facility is the first to be affiliated with a Major League Baseball team, and is suitably themed with features like an “on deck” circle next to the first tee where players waiting to tee off can hit balls at targets on the range. Designed by Colligan Golf Design, the course incorporates 55 feet of elevation change, with the first tee 45 feet above the lowest part of the fairway. There is also a 23-acre practice facility. The city negotiated the partnership with the Texas Rangers, who play nearby, hoping to make the course a bucket list experience for golf and baseball fans. The course opened in late February 2019. 40 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

JACKSON PARK AND SOUTH SHORE Chicago, Ill. Tiger Woods is the lead architect in a plan to redevelop the municipal Jackson Park (18 holes) and South Shore (9 holes) courses just south of downtown Chicago. News of the redevelopment plan first broke about four years ago, then died down due to a lengthy approval and planning process. GOLF.com reported late last year that the Chicago Park District approved securing an engineering firm for the next three and a half years—a crucial step toward starting the project. There is no firm timeline, but Woods is eager to begin, telling GOLF, “I hope this course will be more than just golf and also make a positive impact on the community.”

GIL HANSE

I’m chasing Swinley Forest, the heathland course outside of London. Harry Colt referred to it as his “least bad course” and he built some great stuff so it must be really special. I’m hoping I can get there this year. I’m planning a tour of the heathland courses in the spring and it will be the first place I write to try and get on. I had a chance to play there in 1988 while on my study abroad year from Cornell, but events conspired against me. My how time flies!

Lahinch. We took a family trip in 1991 and on the back end of it we were going to play Lahinch and Ballybunion. We were five so I sat out and my mother, father, and two brothers played it. All they did was talk about how great Lahinch was and I still haven’t played it, so I feel like I need to go.

MICKEY WRIGHT LPGA Hall of Famer

The only course I wanted to play but didn’t get to was Pine Valley. I was told women were not allowed. Had no problem with that at the time, but heard it was a wonderful and difficult course. Never pursued it. And that’s about it.

GREG NORMAN

two-time Open Champion and course architect

Believe it or not, I have never played Pine Valley. As Pine Valley has never hosted a major professional event and I have never spent a significant amount of time up north, I simply have not had the opportunity to play. From what I’ve heard, read, and seen, I would love the classic design—pure golf at its finest. Natural integration of vegetation and surrounds, beautiful contouring of the fairways, impeccable bunkering, and beautiful green settings. There is also a “mystical” history to the course that I find compelling. I’m hoping to maybe get up there this year! 44 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

s the old American Express tagline suggested, membership has its privileges. For some big-name golfers, celebrities, architects, and administrators, membership in the game’s A List means access to the cathedrals of the game. As Wayne Gretzky put it, “I don’t mean to sound egotistical, but since I’ve retired I’ve played Augusta, St. Andrews, Prestwick, Pine Valley, and the list goes on. I’ve been so lucky in my life.” So fortunate, in fact, that he struggled to name the best course he’s never played. “I don’t know,” he said, before it hit him with the intensity of a cross-check into the corner: “Albany Club in The Bahamas. I’m itching to play there.” The Great One isn’t the only one with an itch he’d like to scratch, as LINKS learned when it canvassed golf’s elites for their bucket-list contenders.

BRAD FAXON

I get asked some version of this question a lot and what I always say is if I go through any top 100 list the first course I get to that I haven’t played is the one I’m dying to see. Currently on the world list it’s Royal Dornoch in Scotland. Every course I grew up playing in Rhode Island was a Donald Ross course and I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t been to the course where he grew up. In the U.S., I haven’t been to Sand Hills in Nebraska. It probably put Coore & Crenshaw on the map. It also started the whole movement of building courses in places that are impossible to get to, but the golf’s totally worth it. It’s something I really, really want to do.

PETE BEVACQUA

I’d love to take a trip out to Bandon Dunes. I’ve heard so many great things from so many people and I’ve had several invites and opportunities to go, but it just has never worked out and it’s something I look forward to doing at some point.

I went to Maidstone on Long Island once for an outing and stood at a tee all day hitting drives. I played two or three holes but I really want to play the full course. If I could pick one more, it’d be Shoreacres in Chicago. Jeff Sluman tells me it’s really good.

GARY PLAYER

nine-time major champion and course architect

In all my years traveling around the world, Barnbougle Dunes in Tasmania is one course I haven’t played. From what I’ve heard it’s absolutely spectacular. Links golf is my favorite, and no doubt Barnbougle will test all aspects of your game. Maybe I’ll make it one day.

ANNIKA SORENSTAM LPGA Hall of Famer and course architect

My course would be Royal County Down because I’m a big fan of links golf. The Irish landscape can be very beautiful with rolling hills and fantastic views. This club has hosted several championships through the years and the photos look stunning. By the sound of it, the bunkers are carefully placed, greens are relatively flat, so it should be a fair but challenging course.

Although there are a handful of courses that immediately come to mind—including Augusta, Sand Hills, and Crystal Downs—the course that I’ve had my eye on for quite some time is Myopia Hunt Club just outside of Boston. Built in 1894 by Herbert Leeds, this course remains virtually untouched over the last 100-plus years and tips out at just over 6,500 yards! or more than 100 years, a redbrick steam plant provided power to much of Pinehurst Village. It was shuttered in 1998, but reopened last year as the Pinehurst Brewing Company and now energizes the town with beer rather than hot water. For Pinehurst, it’s just one more story of rebirth, renovation, and renewal. One of the keys to the ongoing success of “America’s golf mecca,” as the area calls itself, is constant improvement. Time may seem to stand still in the quaint village, but nothing else does. Since the Village of Pinehurst was created in 1895, the area has grown and regularly reinvented itself. Perhaps the ultimate example of this is course architect Donald Ross, who lived in town from 1900 to 1948 and tinkered with his masterpiece, the No. 2 course, the entire time. And the trend continues, particularly over the last decade, with every year witnessing at least one new opening or major renovation. Blink and Pinehurst provides a new reason to visit. Or return. This most recent boom started with the opening of Dormie Club in 2010. Still the only original Coore & Crenshaw design in North Carolina, Dormie is a big, rolling course on sandy soil with lots of elevation change. Despite plans for major real estate development and impressive facilities, only the course and a small clubhouse were ever built. But the club was recently purchased by a group called Dormie Network, and LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

besides adopting its name they’ve made it the centerpiece of a national, multi-course membership club and announced plans to invest heavily, add real estate, and improve the facilities and course conditions. The club is private, but at least for now limited tee times are available through Tobacco Road Golf & Travel. Dormie Club is a very good course, another fine example of Coore & Crenshaw’s “minimalist” style, but hardly the pair’s only contribution to local golf. Their much-acclaimed renovation of Pinehurst Resort’s No. 2 for the 2014 men’s and women’s U.S. Opens kicked off a f lood of renovations and improvements in the area. Challenging the conventional wisdom of what a U.S. Open venue should be, the architects stripped out acres of thick rough and removed trees, replacing them with sandy “natural areas” and wide rolling fairways. Then, in keeping with the USGA’s (new at the time) dictum

that “brown is the new green,” the course was allowed to dry out and play fast during the two weeks of tournament play, a radical departure from the lush, emerald green venues of the past. Yet that was how things were a lways supp os e d t o b e. “ T he restoration of No. 2 realigned Pinehurst with its origin story,” says Pinehurst President Tom Pashley. “Staying authentic to Donald Ross’s vision of Pinehurst golf became a guiding principle of our master plan.” Many called the resort crazy, then began following its lead. Years after the U.S. Opens, No. 2 still plays fi rm and fast, and while it’s not as brown as during the championships, the starter strongly suggests aiming for the front edges of greens, letting balls bounce and roll on. The renovation of No. 2 convinced the owners of Mid Pines and Pine Needles—Ross courses just outside the Village—to ask Kyle Franz, who’d worked with Coore & Crenshaw, to give their layouts similar treatment.

In the ultimate show of confidence, Franz now lives off the 18th hole at Pine Needles, looking out on his work every day. Further confirmation has come from the USGA, which picked the restored Pine Needles to host the 2019 U.S. Women’s Senior Open and the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open (its fourth). resorts and course operators should remember: “Golf should be a pleasure and not a penance.” Finished with The Cradle, Hanse shifted his attention a few hundred ya rds away to Cou rse No. 4 . Designed by Ross in 1919, real estate development and renovations over the years by Robert Trent Jones, Rees Jones, and Tom Fazio had squeezed all the Ross out of it. Hanse’s charge was to bring the old Scotsman back, relying on old photos and drawings. The course, which opened late last year, now stands shoulder to shoulder with No. 2, just as big, just as impressive, but with more elevation change and scenic views. And a little less penal, since where No. 2’s crowned greens famously repel shots, the surfaces at No. 4 are meant to accept them. During the construction process, Hanse—who was living in Ross’s original home nearby—urged his crew to walk by No. 2 every day and draw inspiration. Likely the last renovation at the resort for a few years, it’s a helluva way to top things off. So what’s next? “Many people don’t realize Pinehurst Resort owns three distinct hotels,” says Pashley. “The Carolina Hotel is the flagship, the Holly Inn was the first hotel built in the Village of Pinehurst, and the Manor Inn is the smallest one, also located in the Village.” The resort is renovating the Manor Inn with groups of golfers in mind. They’re adding a new bar, food service in the lobby, and private rooms designed for groups to hang out, watch TV, and have a scoreboard for the trip. It will reopen in August 2019. Meanwhile, just a wedge shot away from the Manor Inn, Pinehurst Brewing Company Brewmaster Eric Mitchell is also thinking ahead. “I’m most excited about our future growth and the uncertainty that brings. I get bored easily, I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I think it keeps me motivated.” It must be something in the water. Or the beer.

Pinehurst Travel Tips

1

The most convenient airport for a Pinehurst golf trip is Raleigh-Durham International (RDU). If you’re staying at Pinehurst Resort, a shuttle runs during peak times from the airport to the resort ($95 each way). The drive is just over an hour from the airport to the heart of town.

THE PINEHURST, SOUTHERN PINES, ABERDEEN AREA CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU (3)

2

5

If you’re staying at Pinehurst Resort, use the free shuttles whenever possible. They run continually to and from every resort course, resort accommodation option, Pinehurst Village, and even Pinehurst Brewery.

Some of the best Pinehurst deals are in summer, when the average temperatures are higher (80s) and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Look for deals all over the web, but especially from Pinehurst Resort, Pine Needles Lodge and Mid Pines Inn, and Tobacco Road Golf & Travel, the last of which packages a number of area courses but not including Pinehurst Resort.

6

3

7

Make time to play The Cradle at Pinehurst Resort. The Gil Hanse-designed short course costs $50 for unlimited replay rounds; golfers under 18 play free with a paying adult. And note, you don’t have to be staying at Pinehurst Resort to play The Cradle or any of the property’s other courses.

4

Visit the town of Southern Pines. The food and drink options are wide-ranging and the historic town center is much more charming than the chainrestaurant-lined highway nearby would suggest.

Pine Crest Inn

A visit to the Pine Crest Inn should be mandatory for every Pinehurst trip. Get a drink at the bar then chip balls off the carpet into the fireplace across the room. The Pine Crest is an easy walk from anywhere in Pinehurst Village.

The Tufts Archives, one of the most extensive collections of golf artifacts and memorabilia in the world, are located in Pinehurst Village at the rear of the Given Memorial Library. Entry is free.

8

The bar at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club (just outside Pinehurst Village) is another must-see for any golf traveler. Warm and friendly, it oozes character, looks out onto the Donald Ross-designed golf course, and offers great burgers and a selection of local beers on tap.

9

On your way in or out of Pinehurst, consider playing Tobacco Road (a 30-minute drive toward Raleigh) or Tot Hill Farm (a 50-minute drive toward Asheboro), both Mike Strantz designs sure to produce some of the craziest and most enjoyable rounds you’ll ever play.

hen I first visited Vancouver Island in 1989, its British heritage was palpable. Accents in the provincial capital of Victoria were English proper, and high tea at the Fairmont Empress a must. On a recent trip back, another British export was very much in evidence—golf. Though the island has fewer than 800,000 residents dotted over an area roughly the size of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, it boasts more than 40 courses, testament to Canada’s love of the game. (Canada has more golfers per capita than any other nation—20 percent.) Thirteen of the courses have banded together to form the Vancouver Island Golf Trail, which stretches 155 miles along the island’s east coast where most of the population resides. Late last October, a friend and I set off to explore a few of the courses along the trail. We started at Bear Mountain Resort and Spa, 30 minutes west of downtown Victoria. It includes a Westin hotel and housing community and boasts Canada’s only 36 holes of Nicklaus Design golf—the Mountain and Valley courses. The Mountain Course, which you may recognize from two recent PGA Tour Champions events, was closed for maintenance during our visit, so we teed off on the par-71 Valley. The first two holes were cloaked in atypical fog; when it lifted on hole 3, we were treated to a pleasing layout that climbed and dipped through the woods, with near-constant views of surrounding mountains. Elevated tees on many holes provide a clear view of what lay ahead, and broad fairways will catch all but the most errant shots. Many fairways are bordered by formidable rock formations, known as glacial erratics: Boulders provide an excellent aiming point on hole 13, a downhill par four that’s guarded by a pond on the right. After lunch at the Masters Lounge, we visited the Mountain Course’s signature par-three 14th. On a clear day, the city of Victoria, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Washington’s Olympic Mountains are visible. Regrettably, the fog had moved back in, though a slice of the strait was still in view. SPRING 2019

Gorgeous gorges are part of Vancouver's natural beauty, but the scenery is also spectacular at the Mountain (right) and Valley (below) courses of the Bear Mountain Resort, just 30 miles from downtown Victoria.

Whale watching is a prime attraction as are the courses at Storey Creek and Campbell River (below).

ur home the next few nights was Crown Isle Resort in Courtenay, 120 miles up the island’s eastern coast. Heading north on Highway 19, the province’s tagline—Super Natural British Columbia— was borne out. Swaths of Western red cedar, Douglas fir, and Sitka spruce opened occasionally to the east, offering glimpses of the Strait of Georgia; snowcapped mountains popped through the clouds to the west. Our route passed through the heart of Vancouver Island’s wine country—the island’s 30 wineries focus primarily on Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Siegerrebe, and Ortega. We visited several, including Cherry Point Estate, where charismatic proprietor Xavier Bonilla extolled on the virtues of the local terroir. Clouds threatened the next morning as we teed off at Storey Creek Golf Club, but not a drop of rain fell on this round, nor any others. (A word on the weather: Many associate coastal British Columbia with rain, but that’s not the case on the island’s east side. Victoria averages about as much rain as San Francisco, and summertime is dry with temps between 75 and 80.) Storey Creek bills itself as “a course in nature,” and indeed almost every hole is carved from the woods with no view of other holes. There’s even a resident black bear, though he stayed hidden during our round. With peak summer rates under $70/CAD, Storey Creek is consistently ranked among Canada’s best golf values. Though my friend had trepidations about seasickness,

64 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

we headed to the town of Campbell River for a little whale watching with Dean Parsonage of 50 North Adventures. The waters of Discovery Passage are world-renowned for their abundance of salmon, with all five species (Chinook, Chum, Coho, Pink, and Sockeye) present. The salmon, in turn, sustain pods of local Orcas (killer whales), the largest member of the dolphin family, readily distinguished by their white “eye patch” and large dorsal fin. We motored north to Quadra Island, where a pod had been recently spotted and humpback whales are also known to patrol. No whales were in evidence that afternoon, but we did pass whirlpools of Charybdian proportions, generated by the tremendous tidal currents that whip through the passage. Campbell River boasts a recently renovated track, Campbell River Golf and Country Club. It was too late for a round, though we did experience the club’s

Velocity Lounge, which features a TopTracer™ range, similar to TopGolf. Velocity had recently opened, and there seemed to be a few bugs in the system. But the Shipwreck IPA (from Lighthouse Brewing) was pouring well, and the setting was pleasing. We passed on Velocity’s three-foot hot dog and returned to Courtenay for a delicious burrito and some brews at Gladstone Brewing. Our last round was at Crown Isle, a well-manicured resort track that loops around a dozen lakes. Approaching the par-four 9th hole, we anticipated the view of monolithic Comox glacier, which was highlighted in course literature. Alas, clouds occluded the glacier. We assuaged our disappointment with a Fat Tug IPA (from Driftwood Brewery) at the turn and soldiered on. After lunch in the Timber Room, which is replete with artifacts from Vancouver Island’s logging legacy, we returned to Victoria and the elegant Hotel Grand Pacific. Overlooking Victoria’s picturesque inner harbor, the hotel is ideally situated for a walking tour of the “Beer Mile,” which showcases eight of the island’s many brewers. We didn’t make it to all eight that evening, but managed to sample IPAs at Canoe, Swans, and Spinnakers. It’s easy to see why Vancouver Island has emerged as one of North America’s brewing hotspots. Golf Vancouver Island (888-465-3239; golfvancouverisland.ca) bundles a variety of hotel/golf/ fishing packages along the trail. 66 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

Bobby Jones:

(Breaker) Record

Overlooked among his many golf accomplishments, Jones broke more than scoring records on courses around the world

BOB JONES’S GRAND SLAM

is a record that has remained undisturbed for nearly 90 years and is perhaps the most significant longstanding record in sports history. During Jones’s 16-year competitive amateur career, plenty of attention was paid to his breaking the record on his home course, East Lake’s No. 1, a record seven times, culminating with a sparkling 63 on September 16, 1922. (He matched that score in 1930 and again in 1940.) The record stood for 67 years until Tommy Barnes returned a score of 62 on April 26, 1989. (There’s an asterisk: Barnes played from two white tees.) However, scant if any notice has been given to the fact that Jones is credited with breaking the records on more than 30 courses worldwide. Although most of these records have since been eclipsed, few players in golf

70 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

BobbyJones_S19 copy.indd 70

history can claim anywhere near that number of record-breaking scores. Skeptics might criticize any course that would allow itself to be beaten into submission. Rather than a sign of weakness, Jones thought that a truly well-designed golf course should graciously give up a record score earned by a stellar isolated performance exhibited by an expert player who deserved it. In fact, he used to tell the story of the posh club member who boasted that no amateur or pro had broken par on his golf course: Jones’s stock reply was, “Why? What’s wrong with it?” Jones explained this thinking when writing about his beloved Augusta National: “We are quite willing to have low scores made during the tournament. It is not our intention to rig the golf course so as to make it tricky. It is our feeling that there is something wrong with a SPRING 2019

golf course which will not yield a score in the 60s to a player who has played well enough to deserve it.” Jones knew what he was talking about: He broke the course record at the year-old Augusta National on March 4, 1934, with a score of 65. Almost exactly two years later, he lowered it to 64, a record that lasted 50 years. (Nick Price fi red a 63 in the 1986 Masters; Greg Norman equaled that during the 1996 Masters.) Jones’s co-designer of Augusta National, Alister MacKenzie, was in agreement that an “ideal golf course” should yield occasional record low scores. As he wrote in The Spirit of St. Andrews, “It is no criterion of a good course that the record is high. This is usually an indication of a bad course, and only too frequently means that the putting surfaces are untrue, the approach is unfair, and the greens small and blind. On the contrary, if the average score is high but the records extremely low, 64 or 65 for a course under 7,000 yards, it usually means that a fi rst-class player gets full reward for accurate play.” How did Jones go about repeatedly breaking course records? 72 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

Golf historian Stephen Lowe has debunked the myth that Jones was just a “weekend golfer” who put his clubs away for the winter, picked them up in the spring, then played himself into shape to win a U.S. Open. In “DeMarbleizing Bobby Jones,” published in the Winter 1999 issue of Georgia Historical Quarterly, Professor Lowe concluded: The historical record, particularly newspaper and Golf Journal accounts, is clear: in the period between 1915 and 1930, Jones rarely went more than a few weeks, much less than as long as six months, without playing a round of golf... Jones spent the winters of 1925 and 1926 playing golf with professionals in Florida. In 1926 he played his famous 72-hole match against Walter Hagen, the leading professional of the era. SPRING 2019

Jones did not simply visit Florida for a week to play that match; he lived there for the winter, promoting real estate, especially the Whitfield Estates Golf Club in Sarasota. He also played dozens of exhibitions and entered several open events including the Florida West Coast Opens of 1925 and 1926.… It is true that during the 1927–1929 seasons Jones played much less golf than the professionals he was beating in the U.S. Open, which would suggest that Jones had extraordinary balance, timing, body control, and physical abilities necessary to play golf; in light of that and his tournament record, it is fair to conclude that Jones was indeed a natural golf genius, probably the most naturally endowed golfer ever. There is also some truth to the notion that Jones had an uncommon upper hand in understanding how to recognize and mitigate the risks employed by course architects to formulate diabolical golf course designs. MacKenzie acknowledged Jones’s 74 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

BobbyJones_S19 copy.indd 74

keen understanding of golf architecture in The Spirit of St. Andrews: “Bob is not only a student of golf, but of golf courses as well, and while I had known him for years, I was amazed at his knowledge and clear recollection of almost all of the particularly famous golf holes in England and Scotland, as well as in America.” A not her comp onent w a s h i s k n ack for concentration while playing competitively. Jones used to say that “golf is played more between the ears than on the golf course.” He did not intend to infer “that anything like superior mentality is required but it does mean that there must be no mental Daisy picking while a shot is being played.” Jones employed a singular temperament that fivetime Open Champion J.H. Taylor called “courageous timidity,” meaning “courageous to keep trying in the face of ill luck or disappointment and timidity to appreciate and appraise the dangers of each stroke and to curb the desire to take chances beyond a reasonable hope of success.” To limit outside interference with his snap-on concentration, Jones played against a mythical character, “Old Man Par,” rather than focusing on his opponents. He figured that he would be in good shape score-wise if he just beat the tar out of Old Man Par. The record book shows he got the better end of that proposition. Perhaps the final key for Jones was the desire to understand what the architect wanted the golfer to accomplish. This required anticipating the rare, subtle nuances intentionally inserted to wreck an otherwise pristine round by a careless oversight. MacKenzie acknowledged use of potential spoilers when he wrote “every really good golf course should have some touches of subtlety that prevent the golfer doing a low score without much previous practice.” It seems Jones was quite adept at reading the clever architects’ minds and avoiding the “gotchas.”

or some, it’s about the golf. For others, it’s a lifestyle with plenty to offer off the course. At the all-seasons Talisker Club in Utah’s Deer Valley, a year-long menu of outdoor experiences that appeal to the whole family transcends the ordinary with the quality and scope of its offerings. The club’s private ski-in/ski-out Tower Club at Empire Pass gives access to some of the country’s best skiing. And when the snows melt and the fairways turn green, members of this luxurious private club head to its other primary location, Tuhaye, for golf, boating, and a slew of other adventures. The picturesque mountain town of Park City, site of the 2002 Winter Olympics and host to the annual Sundance Film Festival, is the backdrop to life at Talisker Club and home to its two primary locations, both of which are included in a single membership. That includes the Mark O’Meara-designed golf course at Tuhaye that debuted in 2005 as one of Golf Digest’s Top 10 New Courses in America. In addition to the incredible views afforded by its location at 6,900 feet above sea level, members also enjoy the distance the high altitude adds to their game. The only true private club in the area offering both a skiin/ski-out clubhouse and championship golf, Talisker Club is poised for a breakout year in 2019. The club has purchased the historic Coal & Lumber building on Main Street in Park City and is transforming the iconic building into a gathering place, restaurant, and lounge. The downstairs will be a cozy members-only space with ski storage, bar, outdoor patio, and easy access to Park City Mountain’s Town Lift. Also on deck is a Kid’s Pool Complex and Moondance Park (including a basketball/sports court that converts to an ice skating rink) at the Tuhaye location. At Empire Pass, look for expansion of the Tower Club with a full-service day spa, expanded Wildstar Kids Camp, and enhanced outdoor living with a new pool, fire pit, pavilion, and hot tubs. All this activity coincides with a growing demand for real estate at Talisker Club and a slew of new living opportunities. Single-family homes with expansive golf and National Forest views, the first new custom homesites in a decade, and an exclusive collection of condominium homes ensure there are plenty of options for enjoying four-season, family-oriented living in the Rockies.

Mr. Pro-Am For marketing executive Barry Hyde, the business of golf is his pleasure

I

t was only fitting that at the Wyndham Championship last Aug ust—which marked his 300th PGA Tour/Champions Tour pro-am—Barry Hyde’s team won. His first pro-am was with another colorful character, Ken Green, and along the way he’s won with the likes of Vijay Singh, Gene Littler, and, the latest, Hudson Swafford. Hyde, 53, is known for sartorial flare and an everpresent cigar on the course. But he likes to keep a low profile about his pro-am exploits. “I take a fair amount of ribbing,” he says. Justin Leonard, the reigning British Open champion at the time, did the math and calculated that as of May 1998, Hyde had played in more tour events that season than he had. “And I’m a PGA Tour player,” Leonard exclaimed. It’s all in a day’s work for Hyde, executive vice president of brands and properties at sports marketing agency Wasserman, and living proof that golf is the official sport of business. After graduating from Occidental College in 1988, Hyde tried a few jobs, including as an overpaid babysitter to actor Bill Murray’s two boys. He saved his money, packed his VW Rabbit, and in December 1989 drove to Florida with a dream of working in golf. When the car conked out in Jacksonville, he called an acquaintance at the PGA Tour from a gas station, walked in, applied for a job at TPC Sawgrass, and left with a uniform. “In those days, you didn’t even start in the bag room,” Hyde says. “I picked the range, separating the balatas from the stripers.” From there, he worked his way inside Tour headquarters, where he helped bring MasterCard on as a sponsor. A year later, the credit-card giant hired him to run its golf-sponsorship program, dubbing him “Chief Golf Officer.” Former MasterCard CEO Alan Heuer

used to stop him in the halls and ask to see the top of his hands—the right one tanned to a fine bronze, the left one, his glove hand, a whiter shade of pale. Of all his pro-am experiences, the MasterCard Senior British Open at Royal County Down in 2001 takes the cake. Hyde’s foursome was scheduled to play with veteran pro Howard Twitty, who proved to be a late scratch. His sub? Jack Nicklaus. Hyde is also the namesake of the Manatee Club, a golf club without real estate that’s 70 members strong with thousands on the waiting list. It began at a New York dinner party when one of the wives posed a delicious question: If your husband were an animal, what would he be? Hyde’s wife, Katie declared her husband would be a manatee because he’s big, lovable, and lies around the house a lot. Former PGA CEO Pete Bevacqua, one of the Manatee Club’s founding members, calls Hyde a modern-day Zelig. “There’s a certain magic to the guy,” he says. “Barry just connects all these people.” Take Malcolm Turner, his former intern at the Tour, who wooed Hyde away from the USGA, where he was the association’s first chief marketing officer, to Wasserman. Among those who’ve hired him for representation are David Fay, his USGA boss, and Tom Watson, his former pitchman at MasterCard. “Barry doesn’t get enough credit for being one of the most creative minds in the business,” says Jeff Price, the PGA’s chief commercial officer, who worked with Hyde at MasterCard. Case in point: Arnold Palmer was seeking sponsorship for his Bay Hill tournament and tapped Hyde to lure MasterCard away from The Colonial. Hyde arranged for Palmer to play with Heuer in a pro-am. “He can say no to me,” Hyde told Palmer, “but he’ll never say no to you.” As MasterCard would say, that was priceless, as is playing 300-plus pro-ams—on the job.

I Was There | 2005 Open Championship

Open Window I didn’t have to go far—or turn on the telly— to witness the goings-on on the Old Course

T

he 134th Open Championship was played in my backyard. At the time, my wife and I were living in a two-bedroom flat beside the 18th hole of the Old Course at St. Andrews, a vacation home we’d owned for two decades and had decided to occupy full time two years earlier. The bay window of our secondfloor living room offered a panoramic view of the first and last holes, with the Chariots of Fire beach and North Sea beyond. So that third week in July of 2005 we were able to see the start and finish of the Championship literally from the comfort of our own home, and without the aid of a television. Watching the middle 99 percent of the action would require a bit more effort but no more than a stroll out the back door. We’d considered renting the place and camping in one of the University of St. Andrews dorms for the week— the official “letting agent” for the Open had estimated that a corporate rental would bring $35,000—but in the end we couldn’t bring ourselves to do it. Why, after all, had we been living there for two years if not to enjoy the week of the Open Championship? Besides, our younger son Scott was staying with us, caddying at Kingsbarns during the summer between his freshman and sophomore years at college, and we also had a strong-minded West Highland white terrier who was not inclined to relinquish her doggy bed for the week. It turned out to be a good decision for everyone but the dog. Millie didn’t particularly like sharing her “walkies area” with 50,000 people, and she was generally unresponsive to the “Quiet Please” paddles. But Libby and I made full use of our front-row seat, often leaning out the window for a view of the 17th green and 18th tee. When on Friday Jack Nicklaus walked up his final fairway of major-championship competition, he for some reason stopped briefly just in front of our place to pose for the photographers. As a result, we have a framed photo that shows the Golden Bear in the foreground waving goodbye and

in the background Libby and me, leaning out our windows and applauding him along with everyone else. It was a bittersweet moment for both Jack and us inasmuch as 27 years earlier, as newlyweds, we’d made our first trip to St. Andrews and had seen Jack win the Open. Two major dinners took place on the Wednesday night before play began. The first, which I attended, was the annual banquet of the Association of Golf Writers, held in a large tent that had been erected directly across the two fairways from our home. The other was a bit more exclusive, a gathering of former Open Champions, held in the R&A Clubhouse. Both dinners ended at about the same time, somewhere around 10 p.m., resulting in an ominous moment. As I strolled in near-darkness back toward my home, I noticed another figure walking purposefully down the first fairway, perpendicular to my path, clad just as I was in jacket and tie. Our paths would intersect and it wasn’t until that moment that I was able to discern who my fellow stroller was—Tiger Woods. “Hey,” was all I could summon, and “hey” was likewise all he had in return, maintaining a beeline to his room at the Old Course Hotel. The next day, Tiger strode the same turf en route to an opening 66 and a lead he would never relinquish. He would produce no searingly dramatic moments, no circus shots, and his score was five strokes higher than in 2000 when he won by eight with a record total of 269. But the closest anyone came to him this time was Colin Montgomerie, five strokes back. We were able to see and hear the presentation ceremony from our window, and that experience—watching Tiger hoist the claret jug—is something I’ll never forget.

CAMARGO, Indian Hill A Seth Raynor gem, restored by Tom Doak, with all the template holes, it plays across hilly, ravine-laced terrain to enormous undulating greens. The par threes are all standouts.

THE GOLF CLUB, New Albany One of Pete Dye’s earliest designs (1967), replete with hundreds of railroad ties, it has been virtually unchanged since it opened, remaining an allmale enclave with just 150 members. SCIOTO, Columbus The place where Nicklaus learned the game, this traditional Donald Ross design is one of only four courses to have hosted the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, PGA Championship, and Ryder Cup.

THE SCARLET, Upper Arlington The home course of Ohio State University, designed by Alister MacKenzie and updated by Nicklaus, is widely regarded as the best collegiate test in the nation. 82 LINKS MAGAZINE.COM

INVERNESS, Toledo Celebrating its centennial this year, Inverness has a venerable history that includes six major championships. The perilous last five holes are justly known as Murderers’ Row.

DOUBLE EAGLE, Galena Immaculate conditioning is the keynote of this Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish design set on a rolling treeclad site dotted with several ravines and ponds. CANTERBURY, Beachwood A parkland course from the Golden Age, this design by Herbert Strong is full of movement and variety. It hosted two U.S. Opens as well as the 1973 PGA won by Nicklaus. KIRTLAND, Willoughby A C.H. Alison classic marked by his notorious deep bunkers, its front nine lies on high terrain while the inward half wanders beside a river. A cable car transports golfers back up for the final hole.

MORAINE, Dayton This lovingly restored 1930 Alex Campbell design with links-like features—few trees, rediscovered bunkers, greens tied to tees— plays fast and firm over hilly inland terrain.
