LINK-MAG Gardening

’m sure many of us basked in the glorious spring sunshine earlier this year, but beds, borders and pots were drying up before our eyes.

We all need to do our bit to save what water we do have. The Environment Agency advises householders not to let water run to waste while waiting for the water to get hot. Collect it and use it to water your plants. Similarly, collect the running water in your shower before getting in. Use water-retaining crystals when planting up container plants and invest in a water butt which you can put under a drainpipe or other suitable gully and re-use the water in your garden. The Royal Horticultural society has come up with 10 tips to help save water this summer.

1.

Use waste water from washing-up or rinsing vegetables for watering, as normal amounts of household soaps and detergents will not harm soil or plants.

2. Let your lawns go brown. They will recover when

the rains return. Newly sown and turfed lawns will require a lot of watering to be successful, so leave sowing or turfing until the autumn. Lawn seed companies are breeding deeper rooted grasses that hopefully will stay green for longer.

6. In sunny summers install greenhouse and

3. Vegetables need moist soils to give their

7. By grouping pots, ideally in clusters of similar size,

best. Water them at key growth stages. The response to water is especially marked when sweetcorn, peas and beans begin to flower, when the edible part of lettuces begins to form and when potatoes show flower buds, which initiate plenty of tubers. Most herbs are robust and better flavoured for a little drought. Digging in organic matter in winter can enable soils to hold enough water for crops to keep going for a month with no rain.

4. Mature trees, shrubs and climbers, hedges, fruit

trees and bushes will not need watering during a drought. However, newly planted trees, shrubs and climbers are extremely vulnerable and it is difficult to ensure the water applied at the surface works its way down to the roots. Don’t leave hoses running all night - the water will either saturate the roots and possibly kill them or it will drain deeply below the root zone. Water should always be applied over the surface so it soaks the rootball and surrounding soil.

5. Fruit may remain small if not watered, but it

should be sweet and well coloured. Cane fruit and strawberries will benefit by keeping the soil moist every two weeks. In future adding mulches in winter will help improve the soil and retain more moisture.

16

conservatory shading and ventilation to limit overheating and invest in a min-max thermometer.

watering is made easier and moisture loss reduced. Mass pots for mutual shading and use the largest pots possible. As days lengthen and the sun rises, more plants, especially large-leaved ones, can be gathered in shadier areas. A saucer beneath the pot to retain run-off helps.

8. Don’t dig new ground in summer if you can avoid

it, as digging soil allows any remaining moisture to escape. Hoe off weeds as shallowly as you can, loosen soil with a fork and ‘puddle’ plants into the soil, adding a little liquid fertiliser. Adding nutrients helps plants make the best use of what moisture there is by encouraging extensive root growth.

9. Establishing new plants in borders during dry times

can be difficult. Instead, pot them into slightly bigger pots and keep well watered and fed in light shade until the autumn planting season arrives.

10. Early summer perennials, irises for example, will

survive on moisture left in the soil from winter. Give late summer perennials such as phlox one good watering in the summer as plants begin to flower, which should be enough. In the longer term, consider planting drought-resistant species in your borders such as grasses, Mediterranean type shrubs such as thymes or phlomis, or sedums and other plants with spiky or succulent leaves.

Best of the bunch - Azalea

These acid-loving shrubs, which burst with colour in late spring and early summer, are a must if you want to brighten up dull corners - and they also look fantastic as stand-alone specimens in tubs. Azaleas, which are generally smaller, daintier versions of Rhododendrons, can be either deciduous or evergreen. I love the evergreen varieties which are low and spreading, producing sheets of flowers in May. They work wonderfully in pots and many are hardy enough to cope with frost pockets, although you have to choose carefully. Good varieties include Rhododendron ‘Blue Danube’, a compact, neat evergreen azalea which bears masses of mauve flowers, is extremely hardy and ideally placed in light shade. Another pretty specimen, which is not as robust and will need a sheltered spot, is R. ‘Gumpo White’, which grows to around one metre (three feet). If you want some bigger types, try deciduous azaleas, which can flower as prolifically as their evergreen relatives but also have fantastic foliage colour in autumn. Azaleas come in a mass of colours, from blues and pinks to reds, oranges, whites and yellows. Acid soil is essential, and they are best off in a sheltered site in partial shade. If you don’t choose one of the hardier varieties you may need to put horticultural fleece over the shrubs on nights when frost is predicted, to protect the buds.

What to do this month • Continue to water hanging baskets and

Good enough to eat - Keep peas pest-free

Sow seeds of fast-maturing annuals, spring-flowering biennials including forgetme-nots and Brompton stocks, herbs and vegetables.

Thin hardy annuals and vegetables sown in the open ground.

Disbud border carnations for larger blooms.

Cut back aubrieta and alyssum in the rock garden immediately after flowering.

Put nets on fruit cages over soft fruit to protect them from birds.

Lift bulbs which flowered in spring as their foliage dies away. Dry the bulbs well and check for damage before storing.

Plant out arum lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica) which have been flowering in the greenhouse, or stand the pots outdoors for their summer rest.

If you didn’t put slow-release feed granules in with your container compost, apply a liquid feed on a weekly basis to flowering annuals in pots.

Plant out young dahlias when all danger of frost has passed.

Thin heavy crops of plums so that fruit size is maintained and the branches are not put under excessive strain.

If your peas are in flower now, they are at risk from pea moth, which lays its eggs on pea flowers in June and July. You won’t notice them until you open the pods to start shelling your peas and find that one or more of them have been attacked by a small white grub, which is usually still inside the pod. To avoid pea moth, make early sowings of peas which flower in May and early June, or later sowings which flower after July. Alternatively, grow mangetout, which is picked before the peas have developed. Pea and bean weevils can also be a problem earlier on in spring, nibbling notches out of young leaves, however they don’t generally cause serious harm and will not need controlling. If you have gaps in your rows of peas it may be due to mice. Start peas off in pots or sow extra seeds to fill the gaps later.

Three ways to... be imaginative with climbers 1. Use an old garden umbrella, stripped of fabric, for a

climbing frame, planting deep violet Clematis ‘Jackmanii Superba’ at its base.

small containers every day.

2. Erect tall poles every six feet (1.8m) or so along the

garden fence, attaching thick rope between them to form elegant sways. Plant rambling roses, Jasminum officinale, honeysuckle and Clematis montana at the base of poles, guiding them up and along the swags to create swathes of colour.

3. Use climbers to scramble over uninteresting shrubs in the border - clematis will happily climb conifers and other evergreens, creating colour. Use late-flowering viticellas with spring-flowering shrubs and earlyflowering alpinas and macropetalas with later-flowering ones. Sweet peas can also be used for scrambling over shrubs.

yre Council and Lancashire County Council are pleased to announce that the Knott End to Fleetwood ferry is back up and running.

Wyre Council and Lancashire County Council working with Wyre Marine Services, who had successfully operated the ferry for over 11 years, will continue to operate the service to enable residents to travel across the Wyre Estuary from today. Councillor Peter Murphy, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Economic Development commented, ‘We’re pleased that this announcement could come following such uncertainty 12 months ago. It has been down to a great deal of work from officers at Wyre Council and Lancashire County Council, Wyre Marine Services and the backing of members that the ferry can continue to provide a vital service to residents and visitors to Wyre.’ Now, the new supplier will operate the ferry under an eight year contract, offering a year round, seven day a week service, similar to the previous service. Lancashire County Council has agreed to contribute to the running of the ferry service on a 50:50 basis with Wyre Council for the first four years, after which it is hoped the ferry will be self-sustaining.

In addition, they will provide the ferry to the successful operator under a mortgage arrangement whereby the vessel will become the responsibility of the operator and its ownership transfers to them in full at the end of the eight year contract period. County Councillor Keith Iddon, Lancashire County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said ‘I’m very pleased that this hard work has paid off and the ferry is now back in the water to provide journeys year-round for residents and visitors.’ Now that the ferry has passed its annual inspection and service from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the service is running right now. ocal cause ‘Over Wyre Social and Activity Club (OWSAC) were awarded £1000 from Orsted through the Walney extension community fund

This award will help keep the club going until 2020 and will cover the costs of materials, speakers, tutors and any other activities they undertake. It’s a year since some members of Pilling Lane (Preesall) WI created the club to help alleviate loneliness in the local area, it is a big issue as there are many elderly people who have lost a partner or who cannot get out and about. Initially OWSAC applied for funding from the CO-OP local community causes which were successful, and the group are grateful for all the extra support given to them. The funding enabled them to get started and hold the first meeting, which had over thirty people come to find out what it was all about, the club is open to all adults men and women and is held monthly at St Oswald’s Church Hall in Preesall. During the year membership has grown from strength to strength and is now at over 60 members. During a three month period OWSAC hold a musical afternoon, where the members love to join in and sing; they have a creative meeting with activities ranging from making cards to assembling a handheld posy take place and finally there is an afternoon where someone will come a talk about a subject or demonstrate a skill, from schooling on Gilbert and Sullivan to learning how to create one pot meals. At Christmas time there was a cracker filled party with Christmas presents for each member. The helpers all dressed up as elves and Sue Sporton (saxophonist) 20

The social netwyre provided the music. OWSAC give everyone a variety of interesting things to do and chat about, since joining many members have made friends or renewed old friendships and are now going to other clubs and groups. Initially there was no charge as the costs came from the funding from given by the Co-Op, but many of the members wanted to contribute something so it was agreed they could donate towards the cost of the tea and cakes. Group spokesperson Christine White said ‘We can’t thank Orsted enough for their generous donation and all I can say is ‘watch this space’. SKODA Karoq by Rob Auchterlonie

A

nostalgic moment the other week as the all-new Skoda Karoq had me wistfully recalling my late father-in-law’s Mk1 Escort

1100.

Not by any way, shape or form for comparison purposes obviously, both being as far apart as our friend in North Korea is from reality, but merely because Skoda have brought back to mainstream car production a colour I last saw on said Ford in the last century. 22

What I should have been comparing was the resemblance of the new Czech to the SEAT Ateca sitting alongside it on my drive. Both roll out of the same factory at Kvasiny, both use the VW Group MQB platform and while the lines and look are similar, there are things that differentiate the two. Let’s start with the engine. Ateca has the 1.4 EcoTSi engine producing 150ps and 250Nm, while the Karoq uses the latest 1.5 TSI which produces 150ps and 250Nm….

helps add to the overall refinement experience. It comes with Drive Mode Select which alters the powertrain and steering response between Eco, Normal and Sport, and in 1.5 litre guise the engine has cylinder deactivation technology which should help with the fuel bill – the combined figure is quoted at 51.4mpg with a CO2 figure of 125g/km. Most models in the range are two wheel drive, but you can have a four wheel drive system with the 2.0 diesel engine.

Err, let’s move on. Pricewise the SEAT entry point is lower, but comparing like for like (1.5 SE L DSG Karoq v 1.4 SE Technology DSG Ateca) the Skoda is a couple of hundred pounds more, so again little difference. There are four trim levels to pick from – SE, SE Technology, SE L and Edition, whereas SEAT offer

five for Ateca. So, very similar, but a few differences show up out on the road, where the Karoq offers up a slightly softer and more family friendly ride alongside comparable performance, though the engine has a slightly rougher and more audible edge to it when pressing on. Body roll is kept well under control which

There are similarities too inside but the Skoda racks up envy points with its smart eight inch piano black touchscreen that integrates all the buttons, where the Ateca has actual buttons down either side. Otherwise it’s a win for the Ateca, which has a classier look, though you might think different of course. You’ll find lots of neat Skoda touches, like the ice scraper in the fuel filler flap, the removable rechargeable torch in the boot, and pop up tables on the backs of the front seats which can be locked at 45 degrees and are thus ideal of youngsters to rest their ipads on. Karoq is a replacement for the highly popular Yeti in Skoda’s range, and should appeal to a wider range of customers, not least because it brims with up to date technology. SE L trim sampled here comes with Alcantara upholstery, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats18 inch alloys, automatic headlight control and the adjustable Varioflex rear seats for a bit more practicality. And if the 1.5 is not swift enough for you and you don’t mind waiting, there are rumours of a vRS version in the future. FOR: Manageable running costs, solid residuals AGAINST: Badge snobbery in a crowded marketplace

n Saturday 21st April Fleetwood came together in memory of those lost in WW1, at sea and in wars to join together and make some of the 10,000 upcycled poppies for Fleetwood In Bloom. Tasked by Dawn Spooner of Fleetwood Town Council, an amazing group of locals gave their time to come together and craft in remembrance. Over 100 poppies were made and embellished with a tag of remembrance dedicated to their loved ones. Angie Hesketh - craft co-ordinator volunteer at Fleetwood Museum commented ‘ I was overwhelmed at the response of Fleetwood folk, the day was amazing with families, fishermen and volunteers coming together to support our aim to decorate the Harriet Trawler in a sea of poppies to remember our loved ones. I was touched to read the comments on the poppies and would like to say a hugh thank you to all those who attended’

Remember, it is not acceptable to not pick up after your dog on the beach at any time of the year. The sea washing it away is not an excuse – what happens until the tide comes in? It also affects the water quality. Please always pick up and remember any bin will do. Check the Blackpool and Wyre council websites for further information on helping to avoid a fine.

Caring for your pet Here are Olivia’s top tips: • Check the pollen forecast each day so you know what to expect.

• Try to identify which types of pollens your •

Pets and pollen

• •

How to help protect your pets from allergies

P

ets can suffer from pollen allergies just like humans, causing irritation and misery during the summer months. But if you know what to look out for you can help to manage their symptoms and reduce any suffering.

Here are some of the signs of pollen allergy in pets: • Licking or biting their paws • Excessive scratching • Redness of the skin,

especially around the eyes and ears and in between their toes • Shaking their head • Rubbing their ears or muzzle • Tiredness or lethargy, particularly on days when the pollen count is high PDSA Vet Olivia AndersonNathan explains ‘The signs of

a pollen allergy in pets are a little different than they are with humans. If you spot any of the signs above then it’s important to visit your vet in the first instance, as some of these can be signs of other illnesses too.’ If your pet is diagnosed with an allergy to pollen. Your vet may recommend some medication to help reduce or manage their symptoms during the summer months. Never give medication or home remedies to your pet without checking with your vet first — some medicines can be dangerous in the wrong doses, or for certain species. There are also things that you can do yourself to help reduce the effects of pollen allergies. Obviously you can’t keep your dog indoors for months on end — they will still need their regular walkies! So what can you do during those months your pet is affected by allergies?

pet is most affected by and avoid areas and times where they are prevalent. Try to walk your dog at times of the day with a lower pollen count. This is usually before dawn, late afternoon and early evening, though these times will vary depending on the weather. Avoid letting your dog roll in the grass. This can leave their fur covered in pollen, causing hours or even days of misery. Wipe their paws and muzzle after every walk. Sensitive baby wipes are ideal for this, or you can use special wipes designed for pets. If your dog is particularly sensitive your vet may advise rinsing them with water, or even shampoo, after walks. Keep up with the grooming. A really good daily brushing and regular trims can help to remove pollen that might be clinging to their fur. Wash them weekly. Increasing to weekly baths can help to get rid of any lingering pollen — a specialist hypo-allergenic pet shampoo from your vet is ideal and will have anti-bacterial ingredients to help avoid skin infections Wash their bedding weekly. Also hoover their favourite places regularly, otherwise your dog will end up covered in pollen again after every sleep! A skin supplement or oil added to your pet’s food may help to improve the strength of their skin `barrier’ to pollen, and reduce symptoms of the allergy. Ask your vet about what is best for your pet, as their needs can very different from humans! Thankfully, with some advice from your vet and by taking precautions, you can help to alleviate much of the suffering your pet might be experiencing due to pollen allergies.
