The Savannah Harbor must dredge the Savannah River to accommodate post Panamax ships. Post ships and harbor expansion will invigorate the Savannah economy. This economic boom will create an opportunity to develop Hutchinson Island. Twenty seven million cubic tons of river bottom will be dredged for the harbor expansion. Dredge can be used to create interesting topography on Hutchinson Island. The traditional Oglethorpe grid has many merits that informed the Hutchinson Island design. The fabric of the island is structured but flexible. Abundant green space in Savannah was used as inspiration to create a network of open spaces on Hutchinson Island.

FORM REASONING The two existing harbor slips are spaced one quarter mile apart. Repeating the verticals at a quarter mile width mirrors the traditional Savannah grid and creates blocks that people are willing to walk.

GRID BREAKDOWN With the quarter mile vertical framework in place, the horizontals can be located. The vertical framework that radiates from the harbor slips will be preserved as parks to protect existing wetlands. The framework is then broken down and warped.

TIDAL POOL DETAILS

The waterfront park invites users to explore and connect with the Savannah River. A series of terraces brings visitors closer and closer to the water. The terraces interact with the tide, allowing the lower boardwalk to be engulfed by high tide and allowing "tidal pools" to be filled in parts of the park. Visitors are able to connect with the ebb and flow of the river.

The University of Georgia Studies Abroad program connects students to each other, the university and, more importantly, to Italian culture. This design considers the past, present, and the future of the program and its place in Cortona. The John D. Kehoe center is a fifteenth century monastery. Historical aspects of the building were taken into consideration when connecting the campus to the building and securing the campus to the Italian vernacular.

Existing Oglethorpe Avenue has strengths and weaknesses. As a busy connection from Hawthorne and Prince Avenues, it is used heavily by cars, pedestrians, and cyclists. Fortunately, bike lanes line much of the corridor, though due to high traffic volumes it remains hostile to cyclists and pedestrians. A protected cycle-track at Prince and Oglethorpe may provide long-term success and give cyclists proper protection on the curve. Sidewalks throughout will complete the corridor.

Cyclists are pinched by parallel cars.

A cycle track with a two foot buffer provides safety to cyclists. A bike box with a painted path give cyclists a safe place to rest while waiting to cross the road.

Reducing the curb cut calms traffic and makes pedestrians feel safer. A short-term solution could simply be putting a parking curb along the road.

Milledge Avenue has its strengths and weaknesses. It Is a state highway that is used as a connection from Prince Avenue to downtown Athens. Milledge is heavily used by cars, pedestrians, and cyclists. Fortunately, it has sidewalks on both sides of the street for the full length from Prince to Broad. Because of its heavy use, it is still uncomfortable for pedestrians and cyclists. For long-term success a cycle track may add proper protection and comfort for cyclists.

Widen the curb and add a two way cycle track to protect cyclists.

The existing radius is 58'. If it is reduced to 35' it will slow traffic and make the roads safer for people, cars, and bikes. The change only moves the curb 3 '. In the short term, botts dots can be added to the road. In the long term, the curb can be moved. Create a short term, temporary, structure to reduce curb cut. The structure can be filled with gravel, flowers, or low art.

Add a sharrow to existing lanes. Pinch existing lanes to 10' to slow traffic.

The Central City Park design stems from existing conditions and future green way expansion. The park aims to be a connection to the existing Oconee Greenway and the future Milledgeville bike trail. The topography and water conditions created unique opportunities for programming and design features. Reminiscent of Georgia's own geographic regions, the park is divided into the three main geographical themes: the piedmont zone, the fall line zone, and the coastal plain zone. Newly themed zones correlate and are allowed to speak through existing site topography.

The inspiration came from a graphic design site that played with the hexagon as a design tool. The image is playful but sophisticated. The irregular hexagon form drove the design for the plaza creating more interesting spaces. Voids in the hexagon web create the planting beds and water features. Spatial form was the forefront of the design.

The existing Bruce Street public housing is aging and out of date with community needs. It needs to be replaced in the near future with a design that fosters community and inclusion. Public housing that incorporates different housing types and is woven into the existing public fabric creates healthier communities through social inclusion It is important to add different market rates to have a more diverse community. Public housing that is inclusive with the existing community fosters healthier and happier residents. By working with the Lithonia Housing Authority, Bruce Street will be able to have improved public housing that will give an identity and sense of place to the corridor.
