t is with great sadness this month that we have to pay tribute to Peter Betteridge, The Bed Expert, who has died at the age of 71. Peter was a multi award winning independent retailer who has supported Signpost since it’s inception in 2005. As well as being an incredibly successful business man hugely respected within the industry, he gave so much to the community he lived in. He was involved in numerous projects that enriched the lives of many, from saving the local swimming pool, promoting the Christmas lights, organising Fair Week to fundraising for the local skate park. Kingsbridge has lost an amazing ambassador and it’s difficult to find anyone who has done more as his legacy will live on for generations. Whilst we mourn this larger than life character our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his wife and close family and friends.

The Magic Of Reformer Pilates... In the early 1900s Joseph Pilates created the Reformer for whole body fitness with the intention to help the body relearn how it was meant to move with strength, grace and being free from pain. Pilates is synonymous with the long, lean dancers physique and the design of the Pilates Reformer will help you achieve that as well as improve your posture and flexibility. It will strengthen those muscles that help stabilize the spine and pelvis helping to minimize back pain due to muscular imbalance. It will train the body as one and unite the brain to the movements of your body during exercise and your daily routine of living. The resistance of the reformer means you’ll get results from your workouts faster. The tension of the springs on the moving carriage adjust to different levels of difficulty. As you become stronger and more proficient with the reformer, you progress from reclined exercises to ones that put less of your body surface on the carriage. Sitting ,kneeling ,standing and working of the box create greater levers meaning you need to use more of your own strength, balance and coordination to execute the moves. You will notice greater definition in your arms, legs and abs after just a few months of regular work on the reformer. You will lose fat from your triceps, waist and thighs, and gain lean mass instead. EVERYONE CAN DO IT... Mat-based Pilates has long been the norm in the UK. With the popularity of mat-based Pilates classes in gyms, it’s easy to see why that is the typical starting point into a Pilates practice, but this can be limited. Mat Pilates classes are actually often too challenging for a beginner or people who have done little exercise because they lack the core strength to perform the exercises correctly. The use of springs, straps and the carriage in a Pilates Reformer class makes it a low

An ‘Abs-Salut’ Client Using The Reformer Machine.

impact fitness option, perfect for treating an injury or working on areas before and after an operation. Lying on the carriage keeps the range of movements on a horizontal plane, taking any pressure off weak or damaged knees and ankles. The low impact nature also means you can do it multiple times a week, and this consistency is key to seeing long-lasting health benefits. IT STRETCHES YOU AND BUILDS BEAUTIFUL LONG MUSCLES... Tight muscles are bad news. They pull on our joints and restrict our movement and are often the root cause of injuries and pain in our necks, back, knees, hips etc. Furthermore the design of the Pilates Reformer helps you to achieve long, lean, strong muscles because you are in control of every movement - from the pull or push of the carriage against the spring tension and the return or close of the springs. The movements require full concentration and thought on how the exercise is performed. Its not about how quickly and how many sets but allowing the body to work through the full range of movement and being aware of how the body feels as the exercise is performed. You will work through the maximum length of a muscle to build strength and power without bulking up.

Lisa is offering a FREE taster session to new clients at her studio in Yealmp

YOUR POSTURE WILL IMPROVE... The magic of Reformer Pilates runs so much deeper than a flat tummy. Beyond your toned abs your body will be transformed from the inside out. Working on the smaller muscles that make up the larger muscles that we are more aware of. You will notice the difference in how your body looks and moves, improving your alignment, posture, strength and flexibility. IT WILL MAKE YOU STRONG AND FLEXIBLE... Regular Reformer Pilates practice will improve your overall strength and flexibility and help you move more efficiently in daily life. As you advance in your Pilates practice, the benefits just keep building and the results are lasting. You get one body in a lifetime and Reformer Pilates enables you to get the most out of it.

Lisa In Her Yealmpton Studio

IT WILL DE-STRESS YOU... Better breathing techniques through lateral breathing will mean than you learn to breath more efficiently allowing the lungs to work to their full capacity and oxygenate working muscles in the body. This in turn allows us to learn to relax and de-stress clearing the mind.

IT WILL BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE... Joseph Pilates said that with his method of exercise ‘in 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see the difference and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body. Please get in touch for an informal chat or a free introductory session in my studio. I keep the number very small (no more than three people) as I can give you much more attention, guiding your technique and motivating you to stretch that little bit further. Personally for me, watching a client grow strong both mentally and physically is a great reward and changing someones physical form from being rounded in the shoulders, forward head positioning, poor posture are just a few milestones clients have achieved coming to see me.

Lisa x WHAT MY CLIENTS SAY... “I have been coming to Lisa for the last two years. The change in my body shape is staggering. My back does not hurt anymore, I have the energy I used to have several years ago. I do not use scales anymore as I like my body the way it is. My self confidence, having taken a bashing when I hit menopause, has been restored and I lead a very active fulfilled life free from aches and pains. Reformer Pilates is now an essential part of my weekly routine and I know that it will continually challenge my body and keep me from getting stuck in a fitness rut.Thank you Lisa for bringing this magical piece of equipment to our part of the world.” For more reviews please visit the Abs-Salut Facebook page @abssalutpilates

Beauty Gorgeous Gifts and Tempting Treats by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Whether you’re looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift, or just fancy treating yourself, we have plenty of goodies to tempt you this month. Jo Malone has released a collection of five limitededition fragrances, called English Fields. Unusually, several of the scents are based around cereals and grains, such as wheat, barley and oats, giving them a warm, fresh aroma. Choose from Poppy & Barley, Primrose & Rye, Oat & Cornflower, Honey & Crocus or Green Wheat & Meadowsweet. Each 30ml cologne is priced at £47 and is available from www.jomalone.co.uk. The NHS’s My Trusty skincare range is now available to buy from supermarkets and pharmacists. The range is based around skin-loving sunflower oil. Clinical scientist Dr Mark Brewin says, “Although originally

developed to treat patients with burns and scars, My Trusty is gentle enough for the whole family to use every day. Our users have reported significant benefits on problematic skin conditions.” There are body lotions, hand creams, body butters and a face oil. Each one is lightly scented with essential oils, such as bergamot and neroli, and fragrance-free versions are also available. The best part is that prices start at just £4, and every product that’s bought helps to fund the NHS, see www. mytrustyskincare.co.uk. Natural skincare brand Odylique has ventured into makeup for the first time. Every product is packed with organic and fairly-traded natural ingredients and is palm oil-free. If you’re just venturing into natural cosmetics, lipstick is a great place to start. Odylique’s Organic Mineral Lipsticks (£18) are made with nourishing ingredients, such as jojoba oil and shea butter. Created without synthetic silicones they have a matte finish and may feel different to your usual brand, but the colours are great, and they really do soften and protect lips. Available from www.odylique.co.uk.

Time Bomb’s Peace & Quiet Coconut Cleansing Oil is a real multi-tasker. It works hard to remove makeup and excess oil, but is really gentle and very nourishing. Coconut oil has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The cleanser also includes other skinloving, natural ingredients, such as grape seed, sunflower and safflower oils. The result is smoother, softer, clean skin. On its own, the cleansing oil costs £25 from www.timebombco.com, but do check for giftset offers on QVC. At the time of writing, the oil was being offered with the Flashback Nightly Treatment and H2Omega Complexion Cocktail for £54, which is a saving of more than £20 in comparison to buying the products separately.

Home & Interiors Spring Clean with Style

By Katherine Sorrell

Sweep, brush, wash and scrub. When spring sunlight shows up the corners of your home that need attention, it’s time to pop on your pinny and get to work. And cleaning is so much more enjoyable when the tools you use are both efficient and good-looking. Get your cleaning kit in order: drawers, shelves and hooks will all help. Collection of laundry and utility items, all Garden Trading.

Tips for efficienT cleaning • For a proper fresh start, begin by tidying all the mess that has built up over the last year. Sort it out into piles of rubbish, things to give away, stuff that needs mending and everything else that needs to find a rightful home. Ta da! You have created much more space in your home and plenty of room to get cleaning. • Be prepared. Work out what jobs you are going to tackle, wear appropriate clothing and gather together all the necessary tools and products. A spacious caddy will come in very handy. • Divide tasks into five key areas: vacuuming, dusting, mopping/ scrubbing, washing and wiping, and polishing. Don’t forget specific jobs such as turning mattresses, spot-cleaning upholstery, cleaning the oven, defrosting the fridge, descaling the shower head and beating rugs. You may also get super-organised and add in those less frequent tasks such as steam-cleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept. • Your basic principles of cleaning should be to work from top to bottom and tackle dry chores before wet ones. Decide whether to do one room at a time or one task at a time throughout the whole house. Put some music on and enjoy the process – your home will be gleaming before you know it.

Robust, good looking and comfortable in the hand, this brush could be used for virtually anything. Scrubbing brush, £8, Finch & Crane.

Store your household essentials in one convenient place – a functional and good looking box that’s perfect for carrying round the house. Living Nostalgia French grey housekeeping tin, £24.95, Kitchen Craft. With a warm, inviting and natural scent, this polish is made by a beekeeper in the Cotswold Hills. The cream formula helps to clean and nourish wooden furniture and floors, and is great for cleaning leather, too. Cotswold beeswax polish, £12, Cottage in the Hills. Made from cotton and cellulose, these cloths are washable and re-usable, and then 100% biodegradable. Jangneus green spot dishcloth, £3, Berry Red. Cont’d on page 18

Don’t Have Mad March hair The gadgets for trimming, taming, styling and straightening In the old days, we had combs, brushes and curling tongs – and that was about it. Now there’s more tech than you can shake a GHD straightener at, all of it promising to deliver luscious locks or silky-smooth skin. So which technology is actually worth having for your hair?

4

There are two kinds of gadgets: gadgets for getting rid of hair you don’t want, and gadgets for mak-ing the hair you do want look better. In the first camp we’ve long had electric razors, epilators and little personal trimmers, but lately they’ve been joined by lasers — well, light treatment anyway. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is one of the gentlest hair removal methods around, but you can’t do it if you’re about to go somewhere sunny, and it doesn’t work on lighter hair or very dark skin. Beware of any firm claiming to offer laser treatment from home devices: laser is a more powerful IPL and it’s the preserve of salon machines costing five figures. The best known IPL system is probably Philips’ Lumea, whose products are around the £250 - £350 mark. That’s a lot of money for a gadget, but if you have the right skin tone and hair colour it means no ingrowing hairs, waxing or other unpleasantness. It’s safe everywhere, too. What about the hair you do want? The same pseudo-science that infests beauty products is in hair care too, with lots of big and clever-sounding nonsense trying to convince us that a hairdryer is more than just a hairdryer. Sometimes a hairdryer is all you need. The biggest name in high-tech hairdryer technology is Dyson, whose 26

2

unlovely (is it just us? It looks like, well, a Dyson) but very effective Supersonic costs £299. It’s very powerful, very quiet and stays cool to the touch, although we can’t help thinking we’re basically holding a hand dryer next to our heads. More modest technologies can make a big difference too. Straighteners with adjustable tempera-tures can help prevent too much frizz, especially with hair you’ve coloured, and straightening brushes such as BaByliss’s £50 2440BDU put the heat inside the hairbrush to great effect. The same firm has embraced the other big trend in haircare: straighteners that also style. The Smooth & Wave Secret isn’t cheap – at £129.99 it’s up there with the luxury brands such as GHD – and it looks like a weapon, but it’s enormously clever: hair is drawn into its ceramic chamber, held and preheated, and then it either uses Smooth Mode to straighten or Wave Mode for waves and curls. It goes up to 230 degrees for even the most untamed hair and takes just 15 seconds to warm up. That’s important: some rivals don’t like to point out that by the time their straighteners reach peak temperature, you could probably have grown a beard. It’s very important to shop around for products like the ones we’ve mentioned, as — with the exception of Dyson, which keeps a firm hold on its prices — they’re subject to constant aggressive discounting by supermarkets, beauty shops and online sellers. And it pays to be flexible when it comes to specific brands: the difference in price between Brand A with nice packaging and the slightly less cute Brand B can be staggering. 1. Philips Lumea IPL system 2. Dyson Supersonic 3. BaByliss diamond heated brush 4. BaByliss Smooth & Wave

L et’ s Ta l k . .. Healthy eating...carrot cake In March we have both Mother’s Day and we’re also getting into the Easter spirit, so this month I have created this delicious and nutritious carrot cake with a soft cheese frosting! This tastes like the real thing, but with some extra goodness! Ingredients (for the cake): • • • •

60g grated carrot 2 medium eggs 110g unsalted butter 150g self-raising wholemeal flour

• • •

180g soft cheese 55g icing sugar zest of 1 lemon

Ingredients (for the topping):

Method:

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180’c (fan). 2. Sift the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl. Melt the butter and stir it into the bowl. Add the eggs, milk, banana, cinnamon, carrot and mixed spice to the bowl and combine well. 3. Grease and line a 10 x 5 inch loaf baking tin and pour in the mix. 4. Bake in the oven for 35 minutes, then leave to cool for an hour. 5. To make the topping, with a large spoon mix together the soft cheese, icing sugar and lemon zest. Drizzle over the carrot cake. 6. The cake is best kept in an airtight container. Cajun Meatballs with Herb & Tomato Couscous

Serves 4

Ready in 45 minutes

Mince always makes a great speedy supper – here lean pork mince is spiced up with Cajun seasoning and rolled into meatballs.

FOR THE MEATBALLS • 450g lean minced pork • ½ red onion, peeled and finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 25g fresh white breadcrumbs • 2 tsp Cajun seasoning (see TIP) • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 tbsp freshly chopped coriander • 1 tbsp sunflower oil FOR THE COUSCOUS

• 225g couscous • ½ red onion, finely chopped • 8 sun-blush tomatoes, drained and chopped

• 3 tbsp freshly chopped coriander • 2 tbsp olive oil

34

To make the meatballs, place the pork, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, Cajun seasoning and coriander in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for a few seconds until thoroughly mixed. Alternatively, mix well with clean hands. Shape the mixture into 24 meatballs. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the meatballs for 10-15 minutes until browned and cooked through. Shake the pan frequently to turn the meatballs. Meanwhile, place the couscous in a large bowl and pour over enough boiling water to just cover the grains. Leave to soak for about 10 minutes until all the liquid has been absorbed. Separate the grains by stirring with a fork. Add the onion, tomatoes, coriander and olive oil and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Divide the hot couscous between four serving bowls. Thread the cooked meatballs onto metal skewers and serve on top of the couscous.

TIP Cajun seasoning is a spicy blend of

spices, chilli powder and herbs such as thyme and oregano. You’ll find it on the spice racks in the supermarket.

Six Things People Hate About The Lamborghini Urus by James Baggot Lamborghini has taken the wraps off its controversial Urus 4x4 – but not everyone thinks it looks bellissimo.

don’t ruin lines, it appears Lamborghini’s designers forgot it needed them and stuck them on at the last minute.

While an off-roader from a traditional sports car manufacturer is always going to raise eyebrows, it seems the internet is aghast at everything from the door handles to the new Italian car’s name.

The name Roughly translated, the name Urus refers to extinct wild relations of domestic cattle. We get the association with bulls – there’s one on the Lamborghini crest, after all – but this one seems just a little tenuous.

On the plus side, the Urus has a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 under the bonnet packing 641bhp, allowing the SUV to reach a top speed of 186mph – that’s quicker than the Bentley Bentayga. It also gets all manner of off-road tech designed to make it capable in all conditions, not just on the road. However, despite the incredible technology, a lot of people don’t like the way the Urus looks. So what exactly has got up people’s noses? The rear door handles Once you’ve spotted them, they’re hard to un-see. For some reason, Lamborghini placed the handles on the rear wheel arch and they look like ugly barnacles. With many manufacturers working hard to integrate handles into creases and curves of bodywork so they 40

The Urus moniker sounds clunky and it’s far from the sleek Lambo names of old – evocative names like Miura, Diablo and Countach. Even Gallardo has more panache than the new 4x4. The inTerior It’s hard to ignore the influence that Lamborghini parent Audi has had over the Urus’ interior. The large infotainment screen looks good, but unfortunately that’s where the design appeal stops. Lower down, the switchgear, steering settings and drive mode controllers have all been lumped together. It all looks just a little clumsy – and not particularly user-friendly. FronT sensor In order to top the latest safety tests, manufacturers have to incorporate the semi-

autonomous technology in their cars. This relies on sensors at the front of the car. Most car makers tuck them away neatly in the front of the grille, but Lamborghini seems to have chosen to make it a ‘feature’. Unfortunately, it does stick out a fair bit and makes the front end of the car look less finished than it should – we’d have liked to have seen it fit flusher with the front bumper. rear sTyling The back of the Urus hasn’t gone down well with some internet commentators – most labelling it fussy and overstyled. The quad exhaust pipes appear to be angled out, rather than pointing directly rearward – a strange styling touch that will also take some getting used to. side proFile You’d expect a Lamborghinimade SUV to incorporate a little sleekness in its design, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case with the Urus. The windscreen is very upright, while the rear three-quarters has a rather unfortunate hint of a Hyundai Veloster in it. Just don’t say that too loudly – it will upset the Italians.

PROFESSIONAL

Business Focus:

March: The Eggs Factor It's a busy old time for card retailers. No sooner

have we all got over Valentine's Day, then along comes Mother's Day and Easter. Make sure you've set aside a few pounds for cards, flowers and chocolates. How's that post-Christmas diet going by the way? As you'd suspect Mother's Day was invented in the United States. However, it wasn't created by card retailers to bridge the gap between Christmas and Easter, as some people might think. It was in fact created by a grieving daughter. Ann Jarvis was that daughter and her campaign to make Mother's Day a recognised holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother - Ann Reeves Jarvis - died. But once it took off it became a multi-million-dollar industry for retailers and even Ann Jarvis complained that the whole event had become overcommercialised.

what you can do in your business for these events. Mother's Day is fairly straightforward: offers for mothers, present your mother to a member of staff and get a discount, guess how many mothers are crammed into a Vauxhall Viva, etc. Easter on the other hand can be more tricky. There is the traditional Easter Egg Hunt scenario but if your business has a website, you can give it a 21st century twist. A modern geeky term for Easter Egg is a reference to hidden extras on DVDs and blu-rays. But you can apply a similar treat for customers when it comes to your site. Treasure Hunt

How about adding little Easter Egg icons to various random pages on your website? Announce on social media how many eggs are hidden on your web pages, then get customers to email you with where exactly they saw the eggs. That way it encourages more people to not only Mummy for nothing. visit your website but also to click on The Chase just about every link and page within, searching through the contents. Easter, as we all know is a religious festival. It was created to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. You can then pick a winner at random, get them to visit Although, despite celebrations such as Christmas you to collect their prize, take lots of pics and plaster being on a fixed date, Easter has a habit of moving around the calendar a bit. There is a reason for this but them all over your website and social media. Great fun and a lot of publicity, thanks to the miracles of modern somewhat typically, it's not simple. technology. Has Your Local Bank Closed Down? Dealing with Branch Closures

An increase in the number of customers using online, telephone, and mobile banking, in conjunction with a drive to reduce costs, led to hundreds of local bank branches closing their doors in 2017. According to market research company, Statista, “In 2016, 64 percent of all individuals used the internet for online banking ...”¹ So how do you sign up for this if you’re not ‘tech-savvy,’ and are there any alternatives if you live in a remote area, have limited access to the internet, or simply don’t want to use online banking? Telephone, inTerneT, and mobile banking Bank systems and requirements vary in terms of registration, but in essence you’ll provide your personal details, decide on a password, and choose some security questions or memorable information that can be used as an added layer of security. When you register online, you’ll also be prompted to download the bank’s mobile app to your smartphone, where you can sign in using the same information as for internet banking. Banks may send part of your login information through the post for security purposes, and in some cases you may have to use a small device to log in or transfer larger sums of money. Some new bankS are 46

A few banks are expanding their networks in the UK, bucking the trend of high street branch closures. handelsbanken Established Swedish bank Handelsbanken has a network of more than 200 branches in Great Britain, with further expansion plans being reported in the press. Its business model means that branches are located away from the high street, in order to reduce their operational costs. metro bank Metro Bank branches, or ‘stores,’ are open seven days a week, 362 days a year. You can carry out all the usual banking transactions at Metro, and they have your cheque book and bank card printed in the branch on the same day that you open an account. day-To-day banking aT poST office brancheS A further development that will help if you’re missing your local bank branch is the new partnership between the banking industry and the Post Office. You can now carry out dayto-day banking transactions at your local Post Office, such as depositing and withdrawing cash, paying in cheques, and checking your balance. Although some of these services were previously available to a limited number of customers, the new arrangement allows 99% of personal high street banking customers, and 95% of small businesses, to use Post Office branches for their day-to-day

banking needs. mobile branch banking One new initiative is helping customers to access vital banking services once or twice every week. Lloyds Banking Group has partnered with security firm G4S to provide ‘banks on wheels. ’ In other words, armoured vans that travel to locations where smaller branches have been closed. They won’t be able to control your account, but could pay in, withdraw money, and obtain a balance for you if you provide the necessary written authority. Branch closures are a significant issue, particularly for older people living in rural areas of the UK, but with alternative methods such as the mobile branch banking service, access will hopefully be improved for those who need it. ¹www.statista.com/ statistics/380884/online-bankingpenetration-in-the-uk/ www.telegraph.co.uk/ business/2017/10/08/swedishchallenger-bank-handelsbankencommits-uk-wants-brexit/ www.handelsbanken. co.uk/shb/inet/IStartRb.nsf/ FrameSet?OpenView&idd ef=&navid=Handelsbanke nRB_AbouttheGroup&sa=/ shb/inet/icentrb.nsf/Default/ qF5D7D0EC8FA6784F802576 23002D9974 www.metrobankonline.co.uk/waysto-bank/ personal.rbs.co.uk/personal/waysto-bank/mobile-branch.html

Get Your Soil into Shape by Pippa Greenwood Plants and gardens need a lot of different things if they are to look their best, but one of the most fundamental needs of all is soil. And the better the soil, the better the plants will perform, and the bigger the flowers and the heavier the crops. So getting your soil into good condition and keeping it well looked after is key to great gardening. At this time of year there is still time to shape up your soil before the gardening season really begins in earnest. Frosty weather can be really useful. It may wreak havoc with some of your plants, but if you garden on a heavy clay soil it can save you a lot of work. If you roughly dig or fork over an empty bed or part of your vegetable plot, the large lumps of clay soil will be acted on by the frosts and will break down somewhat, making them more manageable in the process. Most soils can become badly compacted if you walk or stand on them when they are very wet – you literally squash the air spaces out, especially if the soil is clay or even slightly heavy loam. Try to avoid walking on the soil during or 50

just after heavy rain, but if you really can’t avoid doing so use a few boards or planks as walkways to spread the load and so reduce damage to any one area. Forking a soil, as opposed to digging it with a spade, is generally best on a heavy soil as it is less likely to cause compaction. But whether you fork or dig, the soil surface usually ends up pretty lumpy. So grab a fork and re-fork the soil again, whacking the larger lumps to break them up further. A final raking will help to produce even smaller lumps on the surface and so get closer to that ‘fine tilth’ often described in gardening books. Adding bulky organic matter such as leaf mould, well-rotted manure or garden compost will help to feed the soil in a natural way, and also to improve its texture so that it holds just the right amount of moisture for as long as possible. There is still time to fork this in now, to improve the soil in time for this year’s new plantings and vegetables. You can create a great, free source of organic matter for your soil yourself and you’ll save a lot

of time and money as well as being very ‘green’! Make a compost heap or bin, and don’t let the autumn leaves go to waste – instead turn them into leaf mould, a wonderful soil conditioner to improve the soil’s texture. Incorporating some horticultural grade grit or gravel will also help to improve the texture and performance of a heavy clay soil. It is important that you avoid builders’ gravel or grit, as this often contains salts or other materials which can seriously damage, or even kill, garden plants. If your soil contains excessive quantities of small stones, or perhaps larger lumps of flint, you really should try to get to grips with it before you start to create the garden. Doing this before planting is SO much easier than attempting it once the flowers or vegetables are in place! Some stones are good, but even a lightly stony soil can make growing decent crops of root vegetables, such as carrots or parsnips, virtually impossible – they may taste delicious but they’ll often be forked or otherwise deformed. If clearing the soil sufficiently Cont’d on page 52

really is not practicable, then you’re probably best off investing in some raised beds so that you can fill them full of a stone-free soil. Manure can seriously transform a soil, adding both texture and food for the plants to grow healthily. Make sure that you bring in good quality manure, with as few additives as possible – not too many wood shavings for instance, as these can form a high percentage of stable manure and make it far less useful. If possible, view the manure in situ; the last thing you want to do is bring in manure which is riddled with weeds, especially the really troublesome ones like nettles, docks and couch grass. In recent years there have been problems with manure contaminated by the weedkiller used to control

GA

weeds in pastureland, which can devastate plants, often killing them. Try to source manure from someone local who you know, and can trust to tell you what chemicals have been used. Manure needs to be well-rotted before being used in the garden – ideally it should have sat in a heap for about two years. Green manures are a great way to feed your soil and improve its condition at the same time. They will also help to suppress weeds and protect the soil from erosion in a windswept spot. They work especially well on parts of the garden where you do not have plants growing year round – as when you use a green manure, you sow seed, allow the plants to grow and then incorporate them into the soil, where they rot down

and release all sorts of useful materials. Check out what is available by looking in the seed catalogues and get sowing later this year – there are lots to choose from, including red clover, mustard, field beans, phaecelia and field lupins. Yes, there’s potentially a fair bit of work involved, but you don’t have to do everything suggested and anything you do will make a huge difference! id anyone else feel the 2018 earthquake? That is probably the least likely thing I would ever have thought I would be able to write in Signpost! It’s up there with…. the A38 is litter free and Sherford is offering cost effective practical housing! But on Saturday 17th February as I stepped out of my garage there was a slight rumble and then nothing! For once it wasn’t my mid life crisis car either but a genuine earth tremor. It is my personal opinion that it was caused by the water table shifting. As the south of England slowly dips into the sea under the weight of January and February’s rainfall, giant air bubbles are running under Devon, Somerset and Dorset and should emerge with a giant ‘fart’ somewhere in Wales. It’s like bleeding radiators!

A

nyway, as I put down the overly strong coffee, I must thank Mr Friend of Friends Garage for getting me out of the ‘doo dah’ on Valentines Day. He had an excellent selection of half price chocolates, tins of Love Hearts and cheap Cotes du Rhone. As usual, I remembered the great event about five minutes before the shops shut on the 13th so it was either that or a bottle of 0-30 synthetic oil, which is also very reasonably priced, but does not have the allure of a single red rose. The enemy, the good lady wife, seemed pleased with my offering and treated me to dinner at The First and Last in Ermington. There she ate half her body weight in fish and chips and garlic mushrooms….and so ended another romantic evening. On the way back we followed the salt spreader and were hoping for a lorry of lemons and a tanker of tequila in the same queue but no luck.

I

t is at this point I must say goodbye to an old friend, one time drinking partner, business colleage and golfing buddy. From the moment I met Peter Betteridge ‘The Bed Expert’, I knew we would get along and it was on the golf course that we really shone. I remember a cold and rainy day at Wrangaton where Peter and I were playing in a charity event. We tee’d off and slowly but surely hacked are way to the 4th hole. He had arrived dressed in as many colours as possible and….for some reason….a bright orange Harpo Marx style wig. It was on the 4th that I found the biggest cow pat every recorded and I mean the biggest! The animal was obviously on all bran and figs… Peter thought it was great to see me ankle deep, trying to play the shot! As I rolled onto the green, Peter asked if he could borrow my putter. Where’s yours?’ I enquired. I forgot to bring it,’ he replied. So what have you been using for the last three holes?’ Nothing….I haven’t needed it up till now!’ Legend.

What Should You Feed Your New Puppy? Puppies require a special diet with extra calories and nutrients to help them develop strong muscles and bones. It’s easy to overfeed them when they’re young, as their stomachs are very small, so regular feeding throughout the day is better than giving them one or two larger meals. But what types of food should you offer your puppy, and how do you know how much to feed them?

PETS

Complete dry foods Dry food can provide complete nourishment for your puppy, but you should buy the best you can afford. Although ‘premium’ brands are more expensive, you don’t need to use as much per meal as with the cheaper brands, due to their enhanced nutritional content. If your puppy doesn’t like dry food because it’s too hard, you can soak the biscuits in warm water for a few minutes to make them easier to chew. Wet foods Tinned or pouched puppy foods are available in a wide range of flavours, but it’s advisable to choose one that your pet can easily digest,

such as chicken and rice. As with the dry food, you can also buy ‘complete’ wet foods for your puppy, which are nutritionally balanced and highly beneficial for their development. Whether you feed your puppy wet food, dry biscuits, or a combination of the two, portion size is extremely important whilst they’re developing. Always check the instructions on the packet or tin, or ask your vet for guidance – they’ll also be able to keep a regular check on your puppy’s growth. www.thekennelclub.org.uk/getting-a-dogor-puppy/general-advice-about-caringfor-your-new-puppy-or-dog/feeding-yourpuppy-or-dog/

Scherzinger chose to send Rough Copy into the final, but Osbourne, who had the casting vote, voted to send Friend through to the final. The result went to deadlock and Friend received more votes and was sent through to the final. In the final on 14 December, Friend performed a duet with Ellie Goulding and later finished in third place. Providing unique handmade bespoke kitchens to West Country and UK clients

We are proud at Yealm Kitchens to offer bespoke

kitchen design and build, tailored to individual

client needs and desires. We don’t buy in ‘off the

shelf’ kitchen products, instead each of our kitchens

are designed and handmade to order in our onsite

workshop. We work closely with our clients to design

contemporary, modern and traditional kitchens that

say something about the client and provides effective

use of space in any kitchen area.
