Get Behind the Wheelhouse is a project of the Wheelhouse Committee of the Port Burwell Historical Society. The historical Fernglen Lakefreighter wheelhouse, arrived by truck from Port Maitland – in one gigantic piece – in Port Burwell on Wednesday, June 17th. The project is to Honour the 175th Anniversary of Port Burwell’s Lighthouse, 1840 – 2015. The wheelhouse entered town from the north on Plank Road, turning left onto Robinson. At the corner of Erieus and Robinson (by the former United Church) it turned right onto Submariners' Way and continued down, under the bridge, around the Ojibwa, to its restoration site below the Lighthouse, where it was unloaded. The wheelhouse will be restored

The George Barnes Memorial Wheelhouse was the navigational control room on the laker ‘Fernglen’. Constructed in 1917, the ship changed hands seven times in its seven decades on the lakes. Its two-storey steel exterior is 27’ x 24’ and its interior is tongue-and-groove fir, with a built-in chart cabinet and gyrocompass. The Free Will Baptist Church in 1865.

About 1865 it was decided that a church should be built in the thriving Community of Dexter. Dexter, a population of 75 residences boasted a post office, a broom manufacturer, two blacksmith shops, a cooperage, and hotel.

Eventually, the Providence church secured the deed of the Dexter Church, and the Providence Church was sold and the land reverted back to the Armstrong farm.

The Free Will Baptist Church (a sect at that time prosperous in Ontario) was formed. Land was donated Lot 14, Concession 1 Yarmouth and a church was built. The framework of this early church has merely been improved into the present day church in the same location. The Baptist held services for about 25 years, before the congregation dwindled. An unorganized congregation consisting of Presbyterians and Anglicans held services in the church until 1892.

The congregations (Presbyterians, Anglicans, Baptists of the Dexter Church and the Methodist from the Providence Church) all joined together as the Dexter Methodist Church, and was then a part of the Port Stanley Circuit (which had been formed in 1854) making it a four-point charge with Lake Road and Union. PORT BRUCE REPORT Cathy Crane

Catfish Derby The Aylmer Optimist Club hosted their 27th annual Catfish Derby in Port Bruce on Sunday, June 14th. The rainy morning didn't dampen the kids’ enthusiasm or stop their quest to catch a catfish. This year there were 184 children entered in the derby, which kicked off at 6 a.m. The largest catch at 18 pounds 12 ounces was hauled in by Gavin Foster. The second place catch weighed in at 16 pounds 5 ounces. Congratulations to all the winners, and a huge thank you to the Aylmer Optimists for ensuring kids of all ages had a great time!

Amy Blankenship (left) isn't too sure about the 13 pound 10 ounce fish she landed on her line. Her cousin, Jorden, doesn't mind touching the catfish, which is held by John Martinkevicius, an Aylmer Optimist Club member. Twenty seven years ago, Amy's father Chad won the first derby with a catch of 13 pounds 5 ounces.

The Elgin County 1812 Plaque Trail to be Unveiled June 28th at Two Locations Mike Baker

The 1812 Plaque at Christ Church in Port Stanley features the Col. Bostwick Story.

Elgin County Museum Curator

The Elgin County 1812 Committee will host the unveiling of a series of permanent markers on Sunday, June 28th, which record local events and people significant to the War of 1812. The nine markers, located across the county, were funded by the Federal government’s Commemoration Fund. MP Joe Preston will be present at events at two locations on the plaque trail. The first will be held in Port Glasgow, at 1 pm. Memorial Park, 8650 Furnival Road, Port Glasgow. The plaque here marks the location of the two mill stones that survived the burning of Col. Talbot’s mill in 1814. Relocated to a mill on 16 Mile Creek, the stones later propped up a barn and were then rescued and put into the Memorial Park in the 1950s. This event will also mark the installation of a plaque in McColl Cemetery marking the stop General Brock made on his way to Detroit and the resulting

naming of Brock’s Creek. At 3 pm another unveiling will take place in St. Stephen’s Church Graveyard, 33105 Fingal Line. Here the event will include the unveiling of replacement stones on the graves of Col. Mahlon Burwell and his wife. Burwell was a Militia Colonel during the war and the plaque located here records his experiences in Ohio where he was held for six months during the war. The plaque program was co-ordinated by the Elgin County Museum. The 1812 Committee members include the Backus-Page House Museum in Wallacetown and the Elgin Historical Society. Two reenactors portraying wellknown figures of the day – Elgin County settler Garrett Oakes and Wardsville founder George Ward – will be present in costume.

HealthTalk Steve Bond,

Sunburn: A Real Bummer to your Summer We all look forward to the summer. Going to the beach, skipping out of work early to go golfing (Note to my boss- this is hypothetical and not a warning of what I’m planning for the summer) warm nights playing soccer, heading to the cottage. Nothing feels better than the warm sun on your skin, and when the sun is out, more people spend time doing outdoor activities with family and friends. It is important to be aware, however, that sun exposure has both positive and negative effects. Positive effects of the sun include warmth (infrared radiation), light (visible light), and vitamin D3 production in the body. Sunlight also enhances people's moods and kills certain bad bacteria. Despite these advantages, overexposure to UV radiation can also have adverse health effects, including sunburn, premature ageing, skin cancers, diseases of the eye, and immune suppression. Sunburn is caused by overexposure to UV radiation. While the symptoms are usually temporary (such as red skin that is painful to the touch), skin damage is often permanent and can develop into serious long-term health effects, including skin cancer. Mild sunburn results in skin irritation and redness and can be safely treated at home. Severe sunburn requires medical attention. Com-

mon sunburn symptoms include: red, tender skin that is warm to the touch; blisters that develop hours or days later; severe reactions (also called "sun poisoning"), including fever, chills, nausea, or rash and peeling skin on sunburned areas several days after the sunburn. Prevention is the key to avoid suffering from Sunburn. Some simple steps to follow: Limit time in the midday sun (11 am- 4pm -when your shadow is shorter than you, look for shade; use the UV index to plan your daily activities.). If you do want to be out in the sun then a sunscreen and protective clothing such as a wide brimmed hat, long sleeved shirt and shoes are the best protection. It is also important to wear sunglasses that are UV rated to protect your eyes from the damaging sun. Sunscreens come in varying sun protection factors (SPF) to protect from sunburn. Use at least an SPF of 30 and look for both UVA and UVB protection. The higher the SPF number, the better. It is best to apply a sunscreen thickly, in fact a person should use a half of a 110ml bottle of sunscreen per application. Let us help to make sure that you are selecting the best sunscreen to protect you and your family from overexposure to the sun.

The Sparta Church Museum opened their newest display of historical fashions on June 3rd. The display celebrates a Parade of Fashion from 1770 to 1990. The museum doors are open Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm and all holidays through to October 12th. Student Elizabeth Brandeau is working at the museum for the summer to talk to visitors about the beautiful collection of historic fashions for women, men and children. The collection also features interesting artifacts associated with fashion such as an original Singer sewing machine, books and patterns, along with household utensils, toiletry and makeup items and collectables. And of course washing and ironing equipment. Of interest to many parents would be the display of children’s shoes from the early 1800’s through to the 1900’s.

Opening of the new Public Boat Launch

On Tuesday June 23rd two optimist members attended school in Port Stanley to present the principal of Port Stanley Public School with a cheque for $1000. The money will go towards the School Fundraising program for new playground equipment. The fund has raised $15,000 over the last two and a half years and the school is ready to put out a contract for the new equipment, which is hoped can be in place for the fall of 2015.

Construction is completed on the public boat launch in Port Stanley, and a ceremony was held on Tuesday June 15, to mark the official opening. The boat launch is located at the end of Carlow Road, and includes a double launch with driveway access and parking area immediately adjacent to the launch itself. The cost to launch your boat is $20.00 but that includes parking for a boat and trailer for the day. Central Elgin Mayor Dave Marr said, “This boat launch marks another step in the redefinition of Port Stanley harbour as a small craft and recreational harbour and improves public access to the waterfront. We are now closer to realizing the vision of Port Stanley as an active and vibrant waterfront composed of a wide range of public activities. The Municipality continues to work on other measures to fulfill that vision. The boat launch supports tourism and economic development objectives, and it promotes Port Stanley as a convenient waterway access. Central Elgin received $35,000 additional funding from the Provincial Government — Rural Economic Development Program.

Present to make the donation were Port Stanley Optimist President Emily Finch and Treasurer Kathleen Axford.

Port Burwell’s Lighthouse Anniversary Susan Start In 1940 when the Royal Canadian Air Force commissioned its first Canadian-built Harvard training aircraft, the beacon in Port Burwell’s Lighthouse had already been shining out into Lake Erie for an entire century. This is the oldest wooden Lighthouse on the north shore of the lake, and one of the oldest in Canada. As the highlight of its 2015 Canada Day festivities, the Municipality of Bayham will celebrate the 175th anniversary of its most famous landmark with a four-plane formation flypast by the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association on July 1st. The Harvard flypast was made possible by four generous local donors, including Dowler-Karn Fuels spontaneous gesture of two planes to round out the quartet. Four local residents have boldly taken first crack at the passenger seats on this historic occasion. One is Mary Lee Ens, wife of Bayham Mayor and Elgin Warden, Paul Ens. No doubt the passengers are thrilled and relieved that the formation’s lead pilot is Canadian Astronaut Bjarni Tryggvason!

The first Lighthouse keeper was James Peel Bellairs, the eldest son of a significant family of English gentry and the nephew of the British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel. He had come to Upper Canada on a youthful adventure and returned to England twenty years later when he inherited his family estates. For the ensuing century, the Lighthouse was tended by four generations of the Sutherland family. The homes of both the Bellairs and Sutherlands sit a block from the Lighthouse, on Erieus Street. In 1986, the Port Burwell community rallied to restore the Lighthouse, a mammoth undertaking carried out by Leroy Eicher, an Amish craftsman, working with hand tools similar to those used in its original construction. Mr. Eicher will be guest of honour on

The framed building was moved back about 25 feet from the road, raised and a full sized basement was installed, complete with a new furnace. The outside was finished with brick and stucco. A new entrance was constructed at the front and rear of the building. New oak pews were installed, French windows were installed and a new oak pulpit was donated. The platform was built and seats were erected. The estimated cost of refurbishing the building was $4500.00.

In 1925, with amalgamation of the Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and the Methodist Churches, the church became The United Church of Canada. In 1926, boundaries were again changed, placing Dexter Church in the Port Stanley Charge with Union and Sparta. Many improvements were made over the years, some being the installation of hydro in 1933, the church decorated in 1950, a new furnace and propane stove in 1954. A committee was formed to pursue the feasibility of getting a steeple. In 1956, repairs to the choir loft were made and new carpet was installed. An organ was purchased, and a new roof was installed. In 1964 storm windows were installed and a new sign was erected. In 1964, Fingal Church joined the Port Stanley, Dexter Charge. In 1967, a special meeting was held as to whether or not the church should remain open. The motion was

made in 1968 to close the church due to lack of interest. The motion was then rescinded. In 1970, window wells were installed, new sub floor and carpeting were installed, and wall panelling in sanctuary and entry was completed. In 1977 the church connected to the Lake Erie Water pipeline. A new Baldwin organ was donated in 1978. In the years 2000-2002 new basement windows were installed and carpeting in the front hall was replaced. A new front door, new brick on the front of the church and concrete steps were completed. A stained glass window over the front door was installed and a new roof was installed completing the many improvements. Without the loyal dedicated support of the members of the church led by the United Church Women, many of these improvements would not have happened. Many hours were given to preparing meals, hosting teas and bazaars to raise money for the many church improvements. In the early days of the church, concerts were a popular fundraiser. Many Easter Sunrise Services were held at the Lake Erie Water Resources Building on Easter Sunday Morning. Special services, anniversaries, Christmas Eve Services, Easter Sunday Services and Summer Services have been shared with the sister churches in the charge at that time. Many Ministers and organists/pianists have given faithful service to Dexter Church over the years. Without their dedication, Dexter Church would not have had this longevity. The closing Service of Dexter United Church will be held on Sunday June 28, 2015 at 3:00 pm. Our current pastor, Rev. Suzanne Edgar, will lead the service. Steve Peters is the guest speaker and special music will be under the direction of Bruce Smith pianist. Past ministers and members will be present for this service.

The Wheelhouse Arrives In Port Burwell Continued From Page 1 artifacts in Port Burwell’s Marine Museum, and a highly visible attraction on Port Burwell’s main street between the museum and our historic Lighthouse.

How did this opportunity come about? More than 25 years ago, Ron Bradfield, Chuck Buchanan, Tony Lama and David Mason had a dream – to bring a Wheelhouse from a Great Lakes lake freighter to the grounds of Port Burwell’s Marine Museum. They

almost pulled it off when they were offered one from the decommissioned laker ‘Henry Steinbrenner’ for $5000. But fate worked against them when it caught fire from a stray spark during the ship’s demolition, and burned completely. The ‘Fernglen’ was being dismantled at the same time and its Wheelhouse had just been successfully removed from its deck. So the group looked at the ‘Fernglen’ Wheelhouse as an alternative, but the asking price of $30,000 was prohibitive. That Wheelhouse went to George Barnes & Sons, excavating contractors at Lowbanks near Port Maitland, where its lower floor was refurbished for the company’s office. Jump ahead to the fall of 2014,

North Shore Community Classified

when this family firm was making plans to replace the Wheelhouse with a new office building. Remembering the interest of four men from Port Burwell all those years ago, they contacted Ron Bradfield – and have generously offered to donate the Wheelhouse to the Port Burwell Historical Society in memory of George, who passed away in 1998.

The Wheelhouse Committee? Ron Bradfield, Chuck Buchanan, Bev Hickey, Susan Start, Barry Wade, Albert White.

What’s the plan? The Wheelhouse will sit near our historic Lighthouse, facing our historic harbour. Reminiscent of the Ashtabula’s Wheelhouse, it will be a tribute to the era of big ships in the harbour in the 20th century, as the wooden Lighthouse is to the days of sail and steam of the 19th. In February 2015, Bayham Council approved in principle the placement

of the Wheelhouse on the museum grounds; and we are working with municipal staff on those logistical details. In April we prepared the wheelhouse for transport – in one piece and moved the Wheelhouse from Lowbanks to the restoration worksite at Port Burwell’s harbourfront.

Our Budget: $25,000. Raised as of March 1, 2015: $3800. The budget includes Disassembly and Move from Port Maitland to Port Burwell – Reassembly, Painting and Interior Renovation – Site Preparation – Installation and Landscaping. Talk to a committee member about how you can donate or volunteer to help with the work of refurbishing the wheelhouse this summer. 519-8744135 | 519-874-4963 Ron Bradfield, Chuck Buchanan PortBurwellWheehouse@gmail.com

The Last Word

Tom Meet Tom. Tom is a big, black and white boy who is approximately 3 years old. Tom came to us December 18, 2015 looking quite battered by life with scratches on his nose and missing both ear tips. Despite that, Tom is affectionate, loves to be where you are and feels that giving him love is more important than doing paperwork. However, Tom has a problem. It

was recently discovered that Tom is FIV positive. FIV in cats is similar to HIV in humans. Recent studies suggest that FIV is only passed to other cats through bites that break the skin, not through sharing food dishes or grooming and they can have a good long life with appropriate nutrition. FIV positive cats can live harmoniously with non positive cats as long as they do not act aggressively toward each other so, care must be given to introducing FIV cats to non FIV cats. We are looking for a permanent foster home for Tom. His current foster home is with a small dog however, this is just a temporary situation. We think that Tom would be good with a larger dog or even another cat. Please consider giving Tom this chance, he really is a sweetheart. For more information, call Animal Aide, 519633-3788 or send an e-mail to animalaidestthomas@gmail.com.
