minded and believe the Museum, its artifacts and the History of Edison and Bayham are worth saving!

The joint Edison committees (EdisonFest, Dinner & Building Committees) and the Friends of Edison, a newly organized group of volunteers, are urgently looking for new members and support. The group consists of caring volunteers who have been working diligently for many years to keep Bayham’s history alive and available for our community. The volunteers are now faced with the closure of the Edison Museum and the dispersal and *disposal* of a major part of the artifacts associated with Bayham, including the Edison/Vienna connection. Many of the artifacts do-

nated by generous Bayham families will be lost! Bayham council has given the group until their next meeting on September 1st to show there is public support! Immediate commitment is needed from volunteers and supporters that are energetic, dependable, community

Interested persons are invited to join us for a coffee at the next joint information meetings at 7pm, on August 23 or Wednesday August 30, at Bayham’s Family Table Restaurant in Vienna or if unable to make a meeting, come see us at the EDISON TENT at the Straffordville Watermelon Fest on Saturday August 27th. Whether it is a day a week, a month or a year, volunteer help is greatly needed. With extra hands to lighten the load we can be successful, however, IT CAN’T BE DONE WITHOUT PUBLIC SUPPORT! Smoke-Free Beaches Elgin St. Thomas Public Health Launches Poll Elgin St. Thomas Public Health Elgin St. Thomas Public Health (ESTPH) wants to know: Would You Like Beaches To Be Smoke-Free? Results from this poll will be shared with municipal councils who have a public beach in their area. The poll will be online until Labour Day and everyone is encouraged to vote by going to the following webpage: http://fluidsurveys.com/s/beachpoll. Smoke-free beaches can protect babies and toddlers, along with birds and animals, from consuming cigarette butts, and protect beachgoers from second-hand smoke. Smokefree beaches also encourage children and youth to stay smoke-free by

showing them that, adults can enjoy themselves without smoking. Several municipalities in Ontario including Thunder Bay, Timmins, Peterborough, and Orillia already have smoke-free outdoor spaces that include beaches. Cameron Keaney, graduating student from St. Joseph’s High School, states, “Cigarette butts are the number one item found littered on the beach, as well as one of the most dangerous. I think the work being done is so important because it affects everybody, not just local residents. By involving all ages we are able to captivate the attention of a wide variety of individuals that together are taking a step toward a cleaner beach, community, and world.”

LETTERS Some dog owners can read! (In reference to a letter that appeared in our last edition) As one of very few K9 owners who can read, according to a letter in the last issue of the LEB, I would like to point out a couple of things. First, the K9 owners that were talked about likely won't get the message, since they are illiterate and can't read, according to the letter. Second, there are far more irresponsible individuals frequenting our beautiful beaches here in Port Stanley. Like the individuals who smoke on our beaches, leave garbage on our beaches, vandalize the new pier, steal life saving devices, and the list goes on and on. People who trespass on private property just so they can walk a little less distance to get to their vehicles. Reckless driving in our parking lots, and on our street, at all times of the day and night. Now granted there may not be signs everywhere explaining that the offences are not allowed, but common sense should prevail. The petty concern about dogs is just that. Petty. There are far greater issues that should be dealt with. But hey lets call all responsible dog owners, illiterate and inconsiderate, arrogant and above the rules. By the way! I own two dogs they are not off their leashes in public, they are well trained and we always pick up their droppings. This is more than some adults do with their own children, since I have seen diapers and other crap left behind on the beach, when there is always a garbage can not more than a few hundred yards apart along the beach. When everyone is responsible everyone should have equal enjoyment of the beach. Possibly the rule should be changed, or a designated area where dogs and their responsible owners may also enjoy use of the beach (since the area by boat launch has been changed to rock which is hard to manoeuvre and no longer available), or earlier morning and evening use. After all we are all taxpayers! Vern Leeson Port Stanley

Three Port Bike Tour Although it was an extremely hot day on Saturday August 20 more than 80 bicycle riders came through Port Stanley on a three-port bike tour of the region. From Port Stanley the tour took riders to Port Bruce and on to Port Burwell. Organizers had located a refreshment stand at each village on the tour. In Port Stanley Gavin Geurtjens (right) and Tanner Thoonen looked after the refreshment stand for the day. I asked the boys how many people had come

out for the bike ride. They said that 80 riders had come through Port Stanley but approximately 500 had signed up for the weekend outing. Riders had to register for the bike tour at a cost of $60 entry fee which included, road support along the route / lunch in Port Bruce / snacks & drinks at rest stops, a route map / coffee, muffins & fruit before the ride and a t-shirt with fresh 2016 design.

There were three tour options, a 160 km Tour of the Ports of Elgin, one hill, many valleys, a 100 km Tour of half the county, in half a day, and a 50 km to Port Bruce and back, a shorter cruise through East Elgin. All routes started and finished at the East Elgin Community Complex, 531 Talbot St. W. (Highway 3), Aylmer. Organizers welcomed riders and suggested that all riders could stay in Elgin County before/after the 3 Port Tour saying “there is lots to do both on and off the lake”. Organizers listed places to stay and a few local events and attractions that the rider’s family may be interested in. The primary aim of the Three Port Tour is to showcase Elgin County as a tourist and cycling destination. Any proceeds from the tour go to two local initiatives; the Forest City Velodrome and the Environmental Leadership Program.

Volunteer With The VON VON Article Linda Cryderman knows all too well the benefits of choosing to volunteer with the VON Hospice and Bereavement program across Elgin County. Since starting her role 8 years ago, she has volunteered in both St. Thomas and Aylmer supporting many people through their palliative journeys. Currently, Linda is matched with a woman named Ann and they spend time together once a week playing cards, talking or getting groceries. When asked why she chooses to volunteer for this program, knowing she will someday lose this person, Linda answered honestly, “Personally, I have received way more than I've given. I've learned to listen without judgment. I've learned what true bravery is: both in the clients who have invited me to travel their path with them, and in their family members, who also travel a difficult path. I've learned that end of life care is as important as the care given as we enter this world.” When asked what she gets out of this experience, Linda shared, “I've learned that death, although difficult and sad, is part of life. Through this experience I no longer am uncomfortable about my own mortality. I know how important it is for that hour or two a week provided by a volunteer. It allows a short but valuable respite for a caregiver. And it provides time for the person who receives palliative visits to enjoy some time to just talk or play a card game. I receive way more than I give. My life is richer for the people who have allowed me to into their lives.” The hospice program has grown tremendously in the last three years. We support well over 100 people in Elgin each year. Volunteers are a key part of the circle of care and are given ongoing support, education and ongoing meeting opportunities. We are in need of more people like Linda, who are willing to share their time and compassion. Training opportunities are available this fall for new volunteers. For more information please call the VON office at 519-637-6408.

In order to accommodate a larger amount of visitors and better access Hawk Cliff Woods trails and events, we have decided to use a small plot of the property to create a parking lot. The project will begin in late August and is intended to create as little disturbance as possible to the surrounding nature and land. If you have any questions about the project, please do not hesitate to contact Rebecca Launchbury at 519-8583442 or news@ttlt.ca

I just wanted to give you the heads up. On Saturday August 13 and Saturday August 20th Tourism did a little Pokémon Go event in downtown Port Stanley. We will be holding another event on September 3 & 4. Join us for another Pokémon Go event in downtown Port Stanley. We thought this would be a great way to capitalize on the current popularity of the game before the summer is over.

All it really involves is us dropping virtual "Pokémon Lures" at different existing "Poke stops" across the village and promoting through social media that we will be doing so. We hope that this will help attract some game players to our Tourism Kiosk and the downtown area. Our tech-savvy summer student will be organizing it for us. Hopefully it will help get people off the beach and through the doors of the businesses. Here is a link to the event on Facebook - feel free to share it: www.facebook.com/events/1682288 922096025

birds. Parts of the agricultural fields have also been seeded with Oak, Hickory, and Plum trees, which will grow into a new forest area over time. This will not only increase the overall forest area at Hawk Cliff Woods, but will almost double the amount of interior forest that many birds rely upon. A team from Kettle Creek Conservation Authority helped us to plant a white pine shelterbelt along part of the northern boundary of property, adjacent to neighbouring agricultural fields. We’ve also been busy removing Garlic Mustard, Autumn Olive, Multiflora Rose, Common Barberry, and other invasive plants from the forest. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who have helped out with these restoration activities!

HealthTalk Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Everyone has stress; we all get nervous; things can weigh on us and we may toss and turn going over details in our mind. This is normal and most of us move past it and continue with our daily lives. In some cases, these feelings become incredibly intense and can last longer than expected or recur even decades later. This is when a person may be dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a disorder that occurs in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event. This may be something that happens directly to them, or it may be an event they have witnessed such as in first responders who witness traumatic events routinely. The symptoms usually occur within the first three months but may begin years later and greatly impact a person’s relationships and ability to perform tasks such as working. There are four clusters or types of symptoms that are diagnostic of PTSD: 1. Re-experiencing (flashbacks, recurrent dreams);

Steve Bond,

trouble sleeping, feeling ‘on edge’); 4. Negative Cognition and Mood (negative feelings of oneself or the world, loss of interest in daily activities, distorted feelings of guilt or blame). The symptoms of PTSD vary from person to person. However, doctors usually make their diagnosis when someone has symptoms from all four clusters that last more than one month and cannot be explained by other conditions such as injury or substance abuse. The main treatments for PTSD are medication and/or psychotherapy. Antidepressants (Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Effexor) have been used to alleviate some of the symptoms and are generally considered first line. It usually takes two to four weeks to see the effects of these medications, which are safe with minimal side effects. Other medications are used for specific symptoms such as nightmares or severe anxiety. I recommend a careful review of medications with your doctor and/or psychiatrist with regular follow up and evaluation.

2. Avoidance (staying away from people, places or events that remind the person of the traumatic experience);

TAYLOR MADE Jim Taylor Speaks Out Port fishermen regularly fished over the international line Back in the day Lake Erie fishermen set their nets where the fish were most plentiful. I know. …duh! But the thing is Lake Erie fish have no interest in international boundaries. Canada? the United States? Oddly enough perch, pickerel, whitefish, can’t handle that concept. To them it’s all Lake Erie. And it’s home. So when Port Stanley tugs ventured out on Erie’s often, wild waters they dropped their nets where the fish were. Wherever that was. I remember the days my father would come home late, very late. Usually in the fall, which I recall was whitefish season. I can still remember what Dad called whitefish. He’d say “swim up, swim up you mortgage lifters.” Or was that herring? Both, it seems, were among the most profitable of fish. Back in the day anyway. Fall was their season and they were often most plentiful far from shore. So far in fact that the biggest schools were in American waters. I still recall Dad saying: “Saw the stacks in Ashtabula today.” Just like, as I recall, the biggest schools of perch were often over the international line in Canadian waters. And then there was the coast guard. The U.S. coast guard. I’m not sure we had one back then. Or at least one that patrolled Lake Erie. Regularly. As I recall, rather dimly I admit, I was in my teens when all this became real to me. You see, one of my father’s goals was to see that I didn’t follow in his

footsteps and become a fisherman. I never understood why but I am eternally grateful. Not that I wouldn’t have loved to fish for a living, but my career as a journalist meant I never had to work a day in my life. At least that’s how I always felt. Often when I sat in a cosy press box high over the field at the Silverdome (remember the dome) and watched the Detroit Lions play and then chatted with the players in both team’s dressing rooms after the game, I’d think, really? They’re paying me to do this? So I never regretted not following in my father’s footsteps, owning my own fishing tug and dealing with Erie’s constant nastiness. But I digress. This is about boundaries. Where was I? Oh yes …. so eventually the U.S. government, as was often their wont in international affairs, issued new regulations strictly prohibiting foreign vessels (guess who) from entering their waters without official approval. This means you fisherpersons. That was the end of cross-border fishing. Well …….. It didn’t take long to work it out. Let’s face it if Port tugs were fishing in U.S. waters, U.S. tugs were fishing in Canadian waters. As I noted, Lake Erie fish don’t recognize borders. Now I admit I was young and my Dad never gave me a detailed accounting but .... As I understood it, Dad would steer the Sharon Rose alongside a U.S. tug, just over that invisible border and chat with the U.S. skipper. Then Dad would set the nets along the international border with a Canadian flag on the buoy at one end of the nets - in Canadian waters - and the American tug’s flag on the end that extended into American waters. And, of course, vice-versa. What’s good for one .... Just like that. An international crisis solved. An unofficial treaty. A scratch my back and .... well you get the picture I’m sure. What would Donald Trump say about that “treaty” today? Say, do you think they still do that? If only it were that simple.

Trails Master Plan & 10 Year Implementation Strategy Notice of Study Commencement Kettle Creek Conservation Authority In 2014 Central Elgin completed a Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update. The results of this study identified trails as one of the most significant, popular and valued resources in Central Elgin. To move this forward, the Municipality is developing a Ten Year Trails Master Plan. In May 2017, Central Elgin retained Trail planning specialists from WSP | MMM Group from Kitchener to work with municipal staff and local partners to develop the master plan. The goal of this study is to better understand and map existing trails, and create an action plan for the future development, operation and maintenance of trails throughout the entire Municipality of Central Elgin. The plan is being developed between June and December 2016, and involves the following key steps: • Mapping existing trails and understanding trail users’ needs

PORT BURWELL REPORT Allan Spicer

The Face Of Port Burwell Is About To Change The harbour lands or coal flats are now in the hands of a company well funded and active in harbour activities in Port Dover. The former Ports of Call building is being renovated. It will soon be the home of a pharmacy. Real estate activity including downtown and across town is red hot. One knew that Port Burwell would eventually be developed. Land is being acquired at very reasonable prices.

Dammert and Randy Just. Operating Committee member and volunteer Bob Smolders will play Herman. Veterans Ann and Grahame Notman, Valerie Donnell and Collen Marlin round out the cast. Rehearsals for the fall presentation are proceeding well. Dates are as follow: Preview Night Sept. 15, September 16, 17 23, 24 30 and Oct. 2. Tickets tend to move fast. 37 Postcards virtually filled the 50 seats for every performance. Evening performances start at 8 p.m. Sunday Matinees begin at 2 p.m. The newly renovated Periscope Playhouse is being rented out to various groups. The first tenant will be the Port Burwell Horticultural Society. New members continue to join the Periscope Playhouse. After such hard work to ready the building for its first performance this spring, volunteers were called upon again to clean up after a flood from a recent storm. Newsletter Editor Ann Notman reports that Bayham will be looking into a municipal drain issue to prevent further flooding. Marion and Jeff Rogers have stepped aside from the Operating Committee, but remain active Periscope members. In recognition of their vital contribution to the Periscope Playhouse, Marion and Jeff have been made Life Members. Their artistic experience proved to be invaluable to the fledging thespians.

Surprising Omission Our local quaintness will be compromised to a point. One school of thought suggests that you cannot eat quaintness. Others fear any form of development. I, for one, would like to be able to get my weekend copies of the Toronto Star here. Local banking, groceries and gasoline would be nice too. Living in a backwater is much less than it is cracked up to be. Development can be done with an eye to aesthetics and sight lines, with sound Council leadership and fair public participation. I was disappointed with comments at the recent public meeting on the harbour development plan. Now is the time to deal with the first challenge of development, that is parking. One concern is the capability of the planning department to deal with the complexity of serious development. Is the Municipality of Bayham capable of handling the imminent transformation of Port Burwell and Bayham as a whole? Harbour divestiture must happen soon!

Home Grown Thespians Move To Directing Tim Wells acted in the very first performance by the Periscope Playhouse a few short years ago. The stranger to the stage quickly became acclimated. This spring, he was Assistant Director to Pete Matthews in 37 Postcards. Jason Parkins, the Director of the fall play, Seniors of the Sahara, has moved away from the area. Tim has stepped up to take on the role of Director. His wife Katy Wells, also a newcomer to the stage a short while ago, is Tim’s Stage Manager. The cast of Seniors of the Sahara includes Rob Close, Kennedie Close, Alex

Utility and tax billing provide the municipality with great opportunities to disseminate information about Bayham to ratepayers. Our latest tax bills went on at some length to describe various locations around Bayham, ideal for summer activities. A glaring omission was the Submarine Ojibwa. One would hope this was not deliberate and will be corrected with the next utility bill.

No Park Property Easement The Municipality of Bayham requested an easement over Provincial Park property to manage and control access by residents and visitors to the boardwalk and west breakwall. Park management would have none of it. Their only concession was an increase of parking spaces from four to ten. Restricting access to a very important recreation spot for anglers and strollers is just not right. The board walk is an important attraction to a community wishing to rejuvenate its tourism-based economy. The Park management cites security as the issue. There was vandalism recently. The attack on the parking lot was almost inevitable, with the bad feelings in the community over parking restrictions. In the past, a few quite minor instances occurred. The Park and the Municipality and the community could easily co-operate on security, with an easement and unfettered access to the boardwalk and breakwall. The security issue is a red herring used by the Park to pursue their ultimate goal — revenue from the use of the boardwalk and breakwall. Under harbour divestiture, the easement is no longer an issue. The federal government actually owns sixty feet of real estate beyond the breakwall. Bayham Council is now dealing with the latest report on the process of harbour divestiture.

519 782-4563 Let’s do this together!

Macee Macee was one of our kittens from 2015 and is now 10 months old. She has been in a foster home since her spay because for some unknown reason, she stopped breathing during the surgery. They were able to bring her back but she has two issues that make her a special needs cat. She can't see for approximately 3 feet in front of her but she can see beyond that. This causes a few troubles for her when heading for the litter pan because once she gets within 3 feet of it, she can no longer see where it is. Her foster home has 'built' a special litter pan that she has an

Macee easier time with and has plastic under it for easier cleanup if Macee misses. Her head shakes from time to time as well. However, beyond that she is a healthy, normal kitten who loves to play. She is used to a dog and other cats in her foster home. We are looking to find her a forever, loving home. Macee is very affectionate and enjoys sitting on her foster mother's lap. If you can offer Macee a loving, indoor home and don't mind making small adjustments to your home to accommodate her eyesight issues, please let us know and we will make arrangements for you to meet her right away.
